Photos from the ABC TV Upfronts

ABC had its upfront presentation for advertisers yesterday, in which they announced the new fall lineup. They’re going for seven new dramas and four comedies, and some series have been cancelled, including “According to Jim” and “George Lopez”:

ABC backed up the truck and unloaded 11 new series — seven dramas and four comedies — plus an unscripted series from Oprah Winfrey, which is like a cherry on top of the female-centric schedule.

The network brought back “Notes From the Underbelly,” one of its best, most underrated comedies, and “October Road,” a younger-skewing soap that took off late in the season. Canceled series include “Knights of Prosperity,” “George Lopez,” “What About Brian,” “According to Jim,” “In Case of Emergency,” “The Nine,” “Six Degrees” and “Day Break” — not a surprise in the bunch, though it’s a shame that “Knights” never took off.

ABC had long ago made news with its “Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off, “Private Practice,” which will anchor Wednesday nights. “Grey’s” took the mantle from “Desperate Housewives” as the go-to soap on the channel, so a spin-off makes sense in the kind of way that duplicating success as quickly as possible to save your job only can. And making good on its threat to turn a TV commercial into a series, the network picked up “Cavemen,” featuring the Geico characters who are oppressed by society because they are, well, cavemen.

Some of the series sound good, sexy Peter Krause from “Six Feet Under” will star in “Dirty Sexy Money” with James Sutherland. He will play “an idealistic lawyer tied to a corrupt family.”

Others are ill-advised, like a new play-along live action bingo show. When ABC tried to stage a live bingo game for the crowd at the upfronts, they were said to be bored. Maybe they should take a hint and can that show before it starts. There’s also a dumb-sounding show called “caveman,” which was enjoyable when Brendan Fraiser did it, but I doubt they can pull it off.

Has anyone seen the Calista Flockhart series “Brothers and Sisters” with Rachel Griffiths and Sally Field? Is it decent?

Here are pictures of the arrivals, including Kristin Chenoweth, Amy Brenneman, Calista Flockhart, Patricia Wettig, Sally Field, Matthew Fox, America Ferrera, Rebecca Gayheart, Teri Hatcher, Angie Harmon, James Tupper, Anne Heche, Felicity Huffman, Lucy Liu, Eva Longoria, Jerry O’Connell, Eric Mabius, Naveen Andrews, Bonnie Somerville, Laura Prepon, Sara Ramirez, Rebecca Romijn, Nicolette Sheridan, Kate Walsh, James Spader, Emille De Ravin, William Shatner, and Christina Applegate.

Laura Prepon looks great with blonde hair. I almost didn’t recognize her. Everyone is dressed surprisingly well. It’s like the TV stars know how to work the red carpet while the movie stars take too many odd fashion risks. The notable exception is Nicolette Sheridan, who wore a white lingerie top with leather pants and a fat black belt.
