Vintage scandal: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Madonna had an affair in the late ’80s

wenn7012

I remember being a kid and hearing about John F. Kennedy Jr. in NYC. I remember vague stories, gossip about his glamorous New York life as a bachelor. I remember hearing about his relationship with Daryl Hannah and I remember rumors about John-John and Sarah Jessica Parker back in the day too. My mom had a subscription to People Magazine, and back in those days, it was all about Princess Diana, JFK Jr. and, like, Dynasty. Anyway, I’m trying to put this in context in my own mind – there’s a new tabloidy kind of book about John-John called The Good Son: JFK Jr. and the Mother He Loved. It’s all about John and Jackie’s relationship, obviously, but it’s also about the women John dated in his New York Years and how Jackie rarely approved. Apparently, John had a thing with Madonna in the late ‘80s. Sure. I’ll buy that. Some highlights via NYDN:

Bob Littell recalled the day six-foot-tall Sports Illustrated cover model Ashley Richardson showed up at their 86th Street apartment looking for John, wearing nothing but a mink coat and Prada booties. On another occasion during this period between serious girlfriends, John failed to hang up the phone properly when he was in bed with one girl, giving an earful of noisy sex to another. The girl on the phone remained on the line long enough to scream at John, but forgave him the very next day. John was “sleeping with every hot chick on the planet,” Billy Noonan said.

John liked to call his best friend and leave a taunting message. “Check out the cover of People (or Vogue or Vanity Fair),” John would say. “I banged her last night. Just thought you might like to know.” Later, Noonan would get all the juicy particulars from John over the phone. “The possibilities were limitless,” he said, “and John played them out.”

The temptation to draw parallels between the Sexiest Man Alive and his womanizing dad was irresistible. Ever since the revelations about JFK’s affairs began to emerge in the late 1970s — with Marilyn Monroe, Judith Campbell Exner, and others — Jackie and John just looked the other way. “Obviously,” Gore Vidal said, “it’s not the kind of thing a boy brings up to his mother. They just pretended none of it ever really happened. All the Kennedys are very good at that.” One unwelcome reminder of JFK’s torrid affair with Marilyn — the affair that most troubled Jackie — arrived on her doorstep in the form of another blond bombshell by the name of Madonna.

The Material Girl and JFK Jr. met briefly at a party following one of her concerts at Madison Square Garden in 1985. Three years later, after the breakup of her stormy marriage to Sean Penn, she went after John. Beyond the obvious — stories of her sexual escapades abounded — Madonna was convinced that destiny was taking a hand in bringing together the undisputed heiress to Monroe’s platinum persona with the son of JFK. She told friends she believed that her affair with JFK Jr. would be nothing less than “cosmic.” Like his mother, John was perfectly capable of being starstruck. “You could see it in his eyes that first time they met,” said dancer Erika Belle, one of Madonna’s closest friends at the time. “John was totally in awe.”

In a clumsy effort to avoid detection, the couple rendezvoused at the health club where they both worked out and shared the same trainer, venturing outside together only for a quick morning jog through Central Park. She quickly came up with her own handles for John; Madonna called him either “Johnny,” or just “Kennedy.” It wasn’t long before John took Madonna to meet his mother.

At 1040, Madonna stepped off the elevator and signed the guestbook “Mrs. Sean Penn” (technically, she still was). Not surprisingly, Jackie was anything but thrilled with this particular liaison. There were many things about Madonna that rubbed Jackie the wrong way, not the least of which was her habit of thumbing her nose at Roman Catholic rituals. Madonna’s use of crucifixes and other Catholic images was deemed sacrilegious by the Vatican, and across the globe she was being condemned as a heretic. Nor did it help when Jackie picked up a copy of Life only to see Madonna dolled up as Marilyn on the cover. “I imagine it was all hitting a bit close to home,” Vidal said. …

One day while he was staying with Billy Noonan in Hyannis Port, John phoned New York to check his messages. On the other end, a woman with a familiar voice was calling from Rome. “Kennedy,” she began, “I’m drunk and when I see you next I’m going to take your …” The rest was decidedly X-rated, and after John played it for Noonan, his friend asked to hear it again. Unable to quite place the voice, Noonan begged John to tell him who it was. “Madonna,” John answered matter-of-factly. Noonan was speechless. “You are banging Madonna?” Noonan asked. “How do I not know this until now?” So what was it like sleeping with Madonna? “Let me tell you,” Kennedy replied, “she’s a sexual dynamo.”

The only place the superstar couple could let their guard down was in Hyannis Port, where they bundled up in sweaters and jackets and jogged on the beach. Inside the compound, they curled up by the fire, sipping daiquiris from Waterford crystal glasses marked “Caroline” and “John-John” — souvenirs from the family’s first trip to Ireland after the assassination.

[From The NYDN]

There are more details in there, like the fact that Madonna was still technically married to Sean Penn and he was still very possessive of her. When John tried to introduce himself to Sean, Sean was super-pissed because he knew all about their affair. John also had a steady girlfriend at the time too, plus he was seeing other women. There’s a possibility that John might have been sleeping with Madonna around the same time he had a fling (that lasted a few months) with Sarah Jessica Parker.

Here’s why I question the extent of this alleged affair though: I think Madonna would have talked about it more. She would have dropped some info about John to Vanity Fair years ago or she would have mentioned it in some documentary. But hey, maybe I should give her more credit for being able to keep a secret?

I thought this was common knowledge?

    • Aussie girl says:

I too thought this was a know thing.

    • curleque says:

      Everyone knew it.

    • bella says:

      it was!!!

      • Gina says:

Vintage?! Anybody who knows anything Kennedy knows mama Jackie didn’t approve of him with his celebrity girls, Daryl and Madonna. The only thing vintage about this story is Madonna herself.

      • pookah says:

Yup, it was well known at the time – and seemed to be equally well known that it wasn’t serious.

My fav JFK Jr. story is the one where he’s on the same plane as Jennifer Aniston aka Rachel Green and people on the plane are laughing at her as she keeps getting up and walking to wherever his seat was, trying to get him to notice her and make a move – except John-John was like, ‘ew,’ and ‘nah.’

      • Gina says:

That’s funny! I never heard that one. I remember on Seinfeld when Elaine worked out at the same gym as the never seen on screen John did. It was hilarious at the time, because Elaine had a shot at him but through a series a Seinfeldisms, he ended up with “the Virgin.” Elaine referred to him as John John during the entire episode. Life was different then, right?

      • Bored suburbanhousewife says:

@Gina– I too immediately thought of that episode! And “the virgin” was Jane Leeves.

    • Mia V. says:

There are pictures of them jogging.

    • LAK says:

      me too.

ditto his affair with SJP. i think that lasted a year.

Fun fact: In SATC seasons 1-2, there were frequent references to JFK jr which were edited out or changed after he died.

Also, BIG’s real name is a reference to JFK Jr.

    • Artemis says:

Yep it is. Old bios revealed this a long time ago. Each and everyone of them. And back in the day it was in the gossip mags too.

Also, I wonder what her sexual energy really was because with Beatty she wasn’t wild at all apparently.

And her old flings just reveal how sad her dating life is currently. She had the best men back in the day. Even the non-famous were gorgeous charismatic men and the passion was obvious. Now she’s pretending that her partners aren’t complete losers who mooch of her fame. That she doesn’t pick them so she can control them. Ugh. Oldschool Madonna > current Madonna. Things that destroyed badass Madonna: Kaballah > Guy > aging.

      • Yeah says:

I’m sure my pick of guys will be different at the age of 50 than it is now. It’s not all that unusual.

      • Artemis says:

Instead of growing as a person, she’s going backwards. It’s been obvious since she turned 50. The plastic surgery, her music styles, her social media antics and her boyfriends all reflect her insecurity. Oldschool Madonna would dismiss this Madonna.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Same with JLO, she looks great but as far as boyfriends, sigh.

  2. Jegede says:

Actually Madonna was very discreet on her relationship with JFK Jr.

She does not talk about it

She and John also remained friends over the years, writing each other and he was always trying to get her to pose for his magazine, George up till his death.

  3. Jaderu says:

Wait. This wasn’t a secret. I remember the fling being reported and hearing something about details including them using peanut butter in bed. Being over 40 has it’s vintage gossip advantages.

  4. Azurea says:

    Old news.

  5. Christin says:

Interesting how things seem to expand after one person isn’t around to confirm or deny things.

Years ago, it was rumored that Madge and John had a brief fling. And supposedly he didn’t seem quite as (ahem) worldly as she was. Now all this, in great detail? Sounds like another person cashing in during the 15th anniversary year of his passing.

  6. FingerBinger says:

Madonna’s brother talked about this on Howard Stern and wrote about it in his book.

  7. PunkyMomma says:

This is very old news. And sad. He was gorgeous. RIP John John.

    • bella says:

i don’t think there ever was or has been since a more gorgeous man…

      • noway says:

Seriously, he was one of the early sexiest men alive in People and he to me is the most sexy and handsome of the lot. Wish we could have seen him later for what he might have done with his life too. RIP

      • Chrissy says:

My favourite Sexiest Man Alive eva!!!!

      • Etheldreda says:

Cosign. The phrase ‘Greek god’ is overused but it really applied to him.

He got the best of both his parents: his father’s height and build, and his mother’s dark colouring and striking eatures. And I bet he would have aged beautifully….. sob….

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, he was painfully handsome. In a good way.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

I agree, no one comes close to the gorgeous and handsome JFK Jr.
I still have his Sexiest Man Alive cover in a scrap book. I think I framed it at one point.

      • Courtney says:

        +1

    • BooBooLaRue says:

      Cosign.

      • Lucky says:

I couldn’t agree more! I had his Sexiest Man people cover hung up in my cubicle at work in ’88. God, he was gorgeous

  8. noway says:

It was definitely out there at the time. I suppose some assumed it was just idle gossip and they were friends as no one really talked too much about the sex. Still I think most people thought sex was involved as it was Madonna. Also as far as Sean, well they had a very tumultuous marriage, and he supposedly hit her and of course he did hit a bunch of paps. I think it took them a while for the separation and divorce as I recall, a year or more I believe. So I wouldn’t call it an affair. The eighties before the instant internet news it is hard to remember timelines.

  9. Gina says:

Geez Brad Pitt, George Clooney, these are our pretty boys. John John has the title all to himself, even in Heaven. He was beautiful.

    • Green Eyes says:

And he will never grow old, either.

      Sexiest man alive for eternity.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

No one will ever come near JFK Jr,in handsomeness .

Clooney will always be a wannabe in comparison, I’ve never saw what the big desl was about George, but JFK Jr. Was like looking at a dream. Wow.

      • Alexa says:

I know this will be hard to believe, but my former husband was even more handsome than JFK, Jr. (He passed away suddenly last year, but even on what turned out to be his last day alive – the nurses were remarking to each other and myself about how handsome he was.) When I’d tell my friends who hadn’t yet met him about him, I’d always say that he was “very handsome . . . like JFK, Jr. handsome!”

      • Gina says:

Oh Alexa how wonderful your marriage must have been. You’re one lucky gal to have landed someone so handsome and I’m quite sure he’s chuckling somewhere at your pride of him and hoping you keep smiling, which….I am sure you are!

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Oh Alexa thats such sad news to hear you lost your husband.
So sad. My heart goes out to you.

      • PunkyMomma says:

        My condolences, Alexa. ❤️

  10. Jess says:

What a gorgeous man, damn. I wonder where he would be now, in his personal life and career, such a shame.

I hate the term “banging”, it seems so vulgar and disrespectful, lol.

    • Christin says:

I spent most of the 1980s buying People just for JFK Jr photos. He was incredibly handsome and seemed to have a pleasant personality, which is a rare combination.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Oh my gawwd YES! That’s when PEOPLE was so good. JFK JR photos and articles. sigh.

  11. Christin says:

Jackie not only disapproved of most girlfriends, but she allegedly balked at his pursuit of acting. John seemed very interested in acting while in college, but supposedly Jackie did not approve.

If John had followed his own dreams, we’d have him on film to enjoy. Even if he couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag, it would be wonderful.

    • Jaderu says:

His screen debut in “A Matter of Degrees”
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT48cI2Sofc

      • Christin says:

I wish we had 20 years of movies of him. Well, I guess we have Clooney.

That last part is sarcasm. George is not on John’s level. Not even close.

    • Gina says:

I could talk about him all day. The glory of John John. He said in an interview that one does not become an adult until their parents have passed. How sad and ironic. He was the fairest of them all, a perfect combination of mother and father. What a waste…..should never have gotten on that plane with a broken leg. Sigh, teardrop….

      • Kristin says:

I always thought the most beautiful quote from John was “people keep telling me that I can be a great man, but I’d rather just be a good one.” Seriously brings tears to my eyes.

    • holly hobby says:

She also didn’t approve of him learning how to fly. He didn’t take it up until after her death. Imagine if she lived longer, he may still be amongst us today.

He was a beautiful man. Better looking than any celebrity out there.

      • PunkyMomma says:

@HollyHobby – at the time of John’s death, I could not help but think that it was a bit of a blessing that Jackie was dead, because for all the horrific, and I do mean horrific tragedies of her life, she managed to carry on for her children. I don’t think she would have survived John’s death. So I agree with your point – had she lived, he may have too.

      • Gina says:

@All of the above: How strong Caroline has to be to have loved her father, mother, brother, uncles and cousins and to have lost them all so tragically, or in Jackie’s case, too early. She must be a pillar of strength.

  12. mollie says:

How did this old news get dredged up again?
Interesting, is somebody passing this off as “new”? Everybody read about, talked about it, saw the jogging photos, this was no secret.

    • Gina says:

It was brought up as vintage probably because girls in their twenties barely know who John Kennedy Jr. was and that’s sad. There’s only about 60 some comments on him and three of them are mine. I remember the day the plane went missing and everybody knew the end of the story long before they knew it crashed. Damn Kennedy curse.

  13. TheCountess says:

I remember hearing about this in the media when it was happening. They weren’t openly hooking up but it wasn’t a secret either. And of course, Jacqueline’s disapproval for John’s behavior at the time was common knowledge.

  14. Sarah says:

I was a kid in the 80s, he’s one of the first guys to make my heart flutter. I always followed any news of him.

  15. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

All I have to say is “Good Lord.”.

That man is so FINE. It is totally unreal just how good looking he is. I’m sad he’s dead, because I know that if he was alive, I’d be reading the NY paper just to get a look at him. God. It’s so sad that he’s the only good looking Kennedy, out of the younger generations. I haven’t seen a fine one yet, since John-Boy.

    • Jegede says:

The Kennedy-Shriver boys are also gorgeous.

Especially Tim (who was close to John) and Anthony

They just aren’t in the limelight as much

    • holly hobby says:

Current Kennedy spawn that look good: Patrick Schwarzeneger (sorry I know I misspelled that), Caroline’s son and Robert Kennedy’s older son (TSwift bait).

They all have the dark looks without the toothy grin. However John John will always be the #1 Kennedy.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Yes some goodlooking offspring in that Kennedy bunch.
That family has amazing bone structure, hair and teeth when it comes together right, its glorious.

  16. Katenotkatie says:

90s baby in the house 🙋 My mom has always loved the Kennedys and she was especially enamored of JFK Jr.- I was very young when he died but I still remember it because of how upset my mom was. I feel like my awareness of him has less to do with his playboy ways than the sort of mythic quality surrounding him and his entire family, so it’s fun to read about all this old gossip!

  17. Penelope says:

Yeah, this is old news. John certainly got around and hey, why not.

  18. Honeybee Blues says:

I’m going to go out on a limb here and bet that I’m the only one here who actually Knew John. I worked for his aunt and uncle, Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver (’94 -’98), and I had many interactions with him. The bragging about “banging her last night, ” is abject bovine excrement. He simply wasn’t like that. And here’s your big lesson for the day: when one refers to him as John-John to imply a familial intimacy, one is lying. The President was giving a radio address when John was about 2, and John was playing in the Oval Office at the time. JFK said, “John, please be quiet.” A couple of minutes later, John made some noise again, and JFK said, “John, John!” Loudly. He merely repeated his name. The press picked up on that and assumed John-John was his family name. It categorically was not, and I found out that on day one of my 4-year tenure: “He and the family hate that name, so don’t ever use it.” That he would be drinking from anything with “John-John” on it is ludicrous. Over the years I’ve had people tell me that they were friends with “John-John” and I merely smile, not calling them out on it, but knowing that they aren’t being honest. He always introduced himself as John Kennedy, or just John. He truly lived his life trying to be himself and normal. Not a pretentious bone in his body. He refused to take limos and hated being fussed over. I miss him terribly. We were not friends, I only met him a few times, spoke on the phone a lot, but typically just “how are?” “fine” kind of stuff, but he was always graciously appreciative of my time. And EVERYONE knew about Madonna at the time. It was hardly a secret.

    • Jaderu says:

What a wonderful insight Honeybee. From what I’ve always read (even before he died) from colleagues, friends, and people that met him, he was always polite, considerate and a loyal friend. The kiss and tell doesn’t sound like him at all.

    • Jegede says:

Two of President Kennedy ‘s friends close Paul ‘Red’ Fey and Ben Bradlee wrote in their 1960’s memoirs that JFK did indeed call him John John in their presence

These guys were not anti-Kennedy nor looking for a payout so no reason to lie about it
There was no mileage in announcing the nicknames JFK gave his children e.g Caroline was Buttons

I do believe you that he he did not like people calling him that.

But saying the name was a myth created by the press is not factual.
In fact I’m more inclined that Jackie rewrote history (along with her JFK’s favourite tune was Camelot narrative), to deny the President ever called him that, because she herself did not like the name

      • Honeybee Blues says:

His own family told me that. Ted Sorenson also covered it in one of his books, the title of which is escaping me. I’m not arguing, just saying I was told the press story, and there has been much written about that radio address.

    • Santolina says:

Thanks for recounting your experiences with JFK, Jr., Honeybee. I had a journalist friend who spoke highly of him, as well. She said he was always gracious and considerate of everyone, regardless of their status. This careless, playboy image does not fit with anything I’ve ever heard or read about him, even during that era.

    • Diana says:

Yeah I was gonna say it’s BS. He never went by the name of John-John. And that story about John and Madonna that’s been gossip for years now. Nothing new. Lord knows if its even true. Did you get to meet a lot of the Kennedy/Shriver clan?

      • Honeybee Blues says:

Diana, I met pretty much all of them. Jackie died a few months into my tenure, so I never got the chance to meet her or Caroline, who’s terribly private. But I met most of the rest of them.

  19. Lilix40 says:

Hey Kaiser, this Vintage Gossip thing could be a permanent feature here, eh? Would be interesting 🙂

  20. Someonestolemyname says:

I didn’t know him. But I did see him in person several times in NYC out and out in NYC and at a few parties or just around the city , when I lived there. He was absolutely Gorgeous and very polite to people.
No one will ever come close to JFK Jr’s magic and beauty. Gorgeous man.

    • Christin says:

A few years ago, I ran across a video of him pausing while tourists took photographs on a NYC street. The tourists did not notice him until he passed by. The looks on their faces and his politeness were memorable.

    • Jayna says:

Nobody will ever look better in a suit than John F. Kennedy, Jr.

  21. lily says:

    Madonna was no Marilyn.

  22. PHAKSI says:

I thought this was common knowledge

  23. silly you says:

This was no secret, and hardly a scandal.

  24. BengalCat2000 says:

When he died my BFF and I were in total denial. It was surreal because one just KNEW he would do something amazing with his life. He personified “hope” and seemed accessible to everyone. I loved Carolyn Bessette. Her style, her smile, everything. To this day I feel sad about it. Damn.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Same here. Me and my sis loved JFK Jr. We kept thinking he’ll probably make it to shore with Carolyn and Lauren on a raft made from something from the plane or something. I just refused to believe it was the end for JFK JR , his wife and sister nlaw. Sigh…
Days later Watched the lead up to the funeral services in utter disbelief….

One thing it did, was make me wonder if there really was a curse…no matter how far fetched it seemed. I just couldnt accept it at the time that it was just a mistske of bad piloting,,,but now its obvious. It still makes me sad.

That’s one reason I get so upset, when the press tries to compare Clooney with his contract gf and rushed wife, to JFK Jr. There will never be someone like JFK Jr. He truly was the real deal.
Miss him to this day. Sigh

  25. mellie says:

Pictures of him still make me sigh…RIP John Kennedy.

  26. Dommy Dearest says:

Madonna looks like the equivalent to what Paris is known for now. Don’t stick it in unless you want herpes.

  27. Jayna says:

His affair with Madonna has always been mentioned over the years.

  28. Someonestolemyname says:

Many were hoping John’s next move was Politics. I would have loved to see him run for some NY office.

  29. Haolebunny says:

Thank you for this comment thread. From peanut butter to that gorgeous man, it was a great read!

  30. AmandaPanda says:

I would have let him objectify me no matter how many other women he was seeing. Sigh.

The fact I’ve married a man who looks strikingly like him (except my husband has very blue eyes) is clearly the universe repaying me back for the fact I never got a chance. (HUMBLEBRAG!)

  31. Judy says:

I got a glimpse of him and Darryl one morning walking down eight street in the village, between 5th and 6th. My little heart fluttered, it was surreal. My mom worked at 100 Center street and we loitered around the corner, waiting to see him leave the DA’s offices. Fun times. It was tragic when he died 🙁 the end of an era.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Oh my, I saw him with Darryll Hannah too in NYC, they seemed so sweet together. Darryll had a sort of flower child innocent beauty about her, even though she was a big movie star at that point.

  32. yadicakes says:

Always thought this guy had some strong charisma and was spewing sexiness. A mans man….

  33. Mel says:

Funny, but I never understood his appeal. Even my mother thought he was absolutely gorgeous, but he always left me cold. Yes, I could see he had classically beautiful features, but so do many others. (You should see two of my former boyfriends.) My heart just never even thought of skipping a beat at the sight of him.

I DID find him quite likeable as a person, though.
