Channing Tatum only earned $150 ‘on a good night’ as a stripper

CT THR

Yeah, Channing Tatum is totally going to get an Oscar nomination this year. It is The Year of Charming Potato. I’m not saying he’s going to win an Oscar (he might, though), but he’s definitely going to make the short list. He’s playing his Oscar campaign pretty well too. I remember when Channing used to give crazy interviews, in that he would take a journalist home to Alabama and make the journalist get stupid-drunk while they, like, went skinny-dipping. Channing is playing it cooler for his Oscar campaign, but perhaps that’s the result of the increasingly prestigious coverage he’s been getting. The NYT was shocked that a high school jock has done so well. And now The Hollywood Reporter is a little bit shocked that Channing is one of the last great movie stars. You can read the full THR piece here, and here are some highlights:

His 17-month-old daughter, Everly: “I don’t know if I’m going to spank my child or not.”

Whether he and Jenna will have more kids: “I don’t think very, very soon but it really depends if Jenna’s show [Lifetime’s Witches of East End] gets picked up for a third season. Then we would probably wait.” (Lifetime said Tuesday that it will not renew the show.) The two are pondering a move to Ojai, Calif., and selling their home in the Hollywood Hills. If Jenna agrees to relocate, “I would be immensely happy. I just love the country.”

He’s struggling with work-life balance: “There’s not enough hours in the day. I can’t schedule my life and give my daughter all the time that I want to give her and also my wife and all the creative stuff. You can’t really physically be fully present — mentally, spiritually. And that’s my struggle: putting things in perspective [and] being there for everything.”

Anger & fear: “I was having a lot of anger in me. ‘I hate this industry,’ or whatever. Because it was frustrating. When things aren’t easy, you go, ‘Oh, I don’t need this.’ And I think [Jenna] made me realize that that was really just me being afraid.” Afraid of what? “Of not getting what you want. When you feel someone else is in control of your life, of your destiny or your future, that can be very scary.”

The Magic Mike sequel is about a (real) stripper convention: “I have no idea why it’s called a convention. The ‘convention’ was not strippers peddling stripper technology or anything like that. It was just a big show with 50 to 70 strippers and 2,000 to 3,000 women. It was crazy. They attacked me every night.” One time, while giving a woman a lap dance, “The lady goes, ‘Oh my God! Look at you! You remind me of my nephew!’ — and then grabs me. It hit me like a hand grenade. It was like tick, tick, tick, boom: She’s grabbing my butt and saying, ‘You remind me of my nephew.’ ”

How much did he make as a stripper? “Not as much as you think. On a good night, 150 bucks. On a bad night, 70 bucks — even 50 at times.”

His drug-user past: “I wouldn’t say I was losing myself in drugs because I wasn’t doing anything habitually. Just experimenting. Experimenting, I would say. Never the big ones — crack or heroin. I never OD’d or anything. Never.” What about cocaine? “Maybe a couple times, but that was later. Drinking was probably the biggest [thing]. I didn’t look at drinking as a problem. It wasn’t at that point, and I still don’t think it’s a problem. But at that time in my life, it was, ‘Let’s go out and have a great time.’ ”

He takes back what he said about being a “functioning alcoholic”: “It was something said that wasn’t meant to be factual. It was said in context with the glutton side of myself. I’m constantly a flip-and-flop of extremes. I take care of it, to an extent — and then I kind of knock it all down and destroy the sand castle. All I meant was that I do things in extreme.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I lol’d at the stripper convention quotes and the idea that strippers would meet to peddle stripper technology. God, why isn’t that a real thing?! Anyway, THR piece is really long and it’s mostly about Foxcatcher and Channing’s Rise to Power. I learned some stuff about Foxcatcher – I didn’t know Channing had passed on his role years ago because he thought the script was boring, and director Bennett Miller was considering Heath Ledger for the role. I also learned that Steve Carell respects the Potato. As we all do! All hail Charming Potato!

He sounds like he is losing it!

  2. Mia V. says:

Well, that’s way more than I would pay to see any of his movies.

    Hello Mr. Tater
    My morning is better now.

G-strings…Not from the future…For the future

    • Size Does Matter says:

Temperature just rose at least 25 degrees in the room. The tater is soooo hot.

I can’t imagine what the other poor strippers were making if he was practically broke.

  4. pretty says:

he’s handsome. just by looks, he’s more interesting to look at than, say, matt bomer.

  5. smee says:

That is one tiny little pea coat.

  6. Jess says:

I was late the Channing party and only recently starting liking him. I’m in Alabama and errrybody loves him since he’s from here, he reminds me of an ex boyfriend who was quite the douche so I resisted for a long time but he finally got to me! I watched Magic Mike on a trip with my girlfriends and I couldn’t believe how the dude dances, lawdamercy.

    • Ange says:

I only just got on board after recently watching the Jump Street movies, he’s just soooo funny in them. I never thought he was handsome or sexy but I do love a guy who can laugh at himself.

  7. Shijel says:

    He sounds sad.

  8. maybeiamcrazy says:

Ugh! Why is spanking still a thing?

  9. Loopy says:

He is a nice guy, but I really need to see this movie before a make a judgement, always thought his acting was quite pr0nesque.

  10. KC says:

It’s probably just me but I LOVE that he’s wearing his wedding ring.

  11. Aussie girl says:

I like the pic of him on the cover. But mr potato has never done much for me acting wise. But that’s not saying his not a good looking spud😁

  12. Talie says:

There used to be a really shady website that would pop up on Oh No They Didn’t every once in awhile of all these pics this guy took of Channing around the time he stripped. They shed an interesting light on who he was then. Good for him for claiming his past, but I have a feeling it went deeper and the drinking covers some of the past up.

    • jinni says:

Do you have the link to the shady site? What do you mean by something deeper going on in his stripper past to explain the drinking?

  13. Jess says:

On another note, years ago a friend of mine was strapped for cash and rent was due so she decided to go strip, crazy I know, but we drove to Nashville and she found a place that let her start right then, she walked out 10 hours later with over 1k, and no dignity so she never did it again, but I couldn’t believe the amount of money she made! Very lucrative business, I’m surprised Channing didn’t make as much.

Raises hand, kind of ashamed lol
I “dated” a male stripper years ago. He was very hot, very dumb and it worked out perfectly after I had just gotten out of a long relationship and didn’t want anything serious.
Male strippers don’t make as much as females, nowhere near.
The girls give $$ but they are there mostly to drink and have a good time with their girlfriends. Some guys did get more. It was actually funny watching Magic Mike because the shows they put on were pretty accurate.

      • Jess says:

Lol, get it girl! Sometimes we just need hot and mind numbingly dumb to have some fun right? I can see male strippers not making as much, I think women know a lot of male strippers are gay so the fantasy isn’t as real for us, and we’re usually smarter with our money in those type places, aaaand it’s just downright funny to watch guys swinging their dongs around trying to be sexy. Back in my wilder days I preferred female strip clubs, lol.

    • Merritt says:

It is a very unreliable form of income. Most places will make the dancers pay for various things like security and “performance space” because the dancers are not employees, they are considered private contractors. The clubs make a lot of money, but the dancers often don’t. If you are at a place with a lot of high earners like celebs or sports stars that go to the clubs, then it can be lucrative, but otherwise not so much. There was an episode of True Life where a woman stripped for extra cash because she had to support her teenage siblings and her own child and she was only getting $200-300 for a night.

  14. Sayrah says:

He wasn’t as hot as he is now. And yes, I still have magic mike saved on my DVR at the point where he does the it’s raining men dance. Mmmm

  15. kri says:

LMAO at “stripper technology”..These shoes light up and MAKE CHANGE for the customer!! This thong is self-cleaning!! Oh, god. I don’t know what to think of him. I do want to see Foxcatcher, tho.

  16. Lis says:

Personally I don’t think he’s hot at all. His popularity baffles me.
