Jennifer Lawrence: ‘I will never get Twitter. The internet has scorned me’

Jennifer Lawrence and her boys, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, are doing the rounds for Mockingjay: Part I in London. Jennifer still has strep throat, and so does Josh. Both of them admitted during this BBC interview that they’re on very strong antibiotics to get them through the press tour. JLaw said she had two drips yesterday, and “I passed out in the hallway.” That sounds terrifying. I guess studios will pump their stars full of anything to get them through promotion. JLaw also pays lip service to her ulcer on the Catching Fire tour — remember how she told Letterman how exhausted she was? I hope Lionsgate knows what they’re doing.

Jennifer was animated during this group interview with the BBC. She kept interrupting Liam, so I guess she felt okay enough. Jennifer has already talked about how she has no desire to become more accessible on social media, but she never fully elaborated. BBC got an explanation out of Jen:

On social media: “I will never get Twitter. I’m not very good on phone or technology. I cannot really keep up with emails so the idea of Twitter is so unthinkable to me. I don’t really understand what it is. It’s like this weird enigma that people talk about. It’s fine, I respect that, but no, I’ll never get a Twitter. If you ever see a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter that says it’s me, it most certainly is not.”

She rehearsed this answer: “I had that one locked and loaded,” she said with a laugh. “I really like laser focused [on that answer] … it’s because the internet has scorned me so much that I feel like it’s that girl in high school that I’m like, ‘Oh, you want to talk about her? Yeah I’ll do that!’ Take my hoops off, I’m ready to go.”

[From BBC One]

Can you blame Jennifer for feeling this way? Even if the stolen photos had never happened, the internet is still a beast. People are rough on Jen and either strongly admire or vehemently dislike her. She’s been very aware of the backlash to her “aw, shucks” persona for years, so I don’t blame her for not wanting to engage online. I’m a JLaw fan, but I’m glad she’s not tweeting about farts on Twitter. Have you seen the responses that celebrities receive whenever they tweet something, anything? The replies are a strange mixture of sexually explicit requests and people shouting, “MOM!” Crazy.

A few more pieces of JLaw news:

* At the London premiere, Donald Sutherland raved about JLaw to MTV News. The man now known as President Snow (to an entire generation) said, “You don’t get a chance to work with a genius all that often and that’s what she is.

* Director Francis Lawrence spoke with the Radio times about how nervous Jennifer was to sing “The Hanging Tree” for this movie: “She’d probably tell you it was her least favourite day. She was horrified to sing, she cried a little bit before she had to sing. But she did it and she did it all day — and she hated me for making her do it all day — and it’s great. She’s so sensitive about the singing.” Awww, JLaw.

* Here are some photos of Jennifer’s appearance with Liam on Germany’s Wetten, dass..? on Saturday. The hosts had JLaw cut a cake and serve it to audience members despite the strep throat.

    She’s so rill!

Why is she always sick? Does she lick the pay phone at a bus station before every promo tour?

    • Loopy says:

Lol was wondering the same thing, she always seems to be ill during promo and awards season, i guess they work her to the bone. All those flights, interacting with a million people a day and very little sleep.

    • Kiddo says:

I think it’s the three hour run from paps and dehydration. Or the rose wallpaper and deficiency of fish head dietary nutrients.

    • PHD gossip says:

LOL! Its all part of her drama queen shtick. Remember her diarrhea?

    • Lau says:

That’s my guess. I think all that filming and promoting leaves no room for any kind of relaxing. It’s all very stressful and besides, I mean, just imagine – all eyes are on her, everywhere in the world right now because of such an anticipated movie. I think that must be very… I don’t know, if it was me, I’d probably feel suffocated. You can never let your guard down, can’t let your legs dangle (I don’t know if that’s the right expression, I’m a foreigner). But I tend to believe that would make me sick, too.

      • Charlie says:

Does any other actor get sick so often?

      • Lau says:

Does any other actor work, promote as much and as extended as she does currently? I mean, I guess it IS this year’s most anticipated movie. It’s just my take, and I only tried to put myself in her current position.

      • Alex says:

As for being sick she caught strep throat from Josh. So it’s less about being run down this time and more about being in close quarters with her sick costar. He was so sick he missed the first two days of press. This one was bad luck. Before she was stretch WAY too thin between movie promotion, filming and oscar campaigns. And some people have crap immune systems. I have a friend who gets sick super easily even though she tries to be healthy. So for her it could be a combination of too much and a bad immune system.
But yea Josh is to blame for this one. Haha

      • Abbott says:

I get what you’re saying. But I know more about this lady’s bowel movements and medical history than I do my own.

    • Erinn says:

🙁 I get sick a lot. But I also work in a disgusting office. I imagine she ends up shaking a lot of hands, hugging a lot of fans, and is always on the go during press tours, so her immune system take a beating.

That being said – anyone have any good cold ‘remedies’? I took some Buckley’s capsules last night, and had the worst night’s sleep I’ve had in a long time. Tossed and turned all night – no cough and my nose wasn’t too stuffy, but I need to catch up on sleep.

      • Bella bella says:

Rescue Remedy, garlic pills, zinc, ginger tea, licorice tea.

      • Milena says:

Spicy soup (Korean kimchi jigae is my favorite, but literally any kind will do – Vietnamese soups are also amazing). It clears out your sinuses, and the hot liquid soothes a sore throat. That plus Tylenol and OJ is my usual go-to. Then again, I solve all my problems with food.

My old voice teacher also recommended the herbal supplement echinacea to me, which she used to recover quickly if she got sick during the run of a show. Never tried that one myself, though.

      • Venuslotus says:

Erinn, organic apple cider vinegar (with mother) usually works for me..it’s amazing for all sorts of things (including a UTI !)..and also ginger tea steeped with a cinnamon stick, is always something that makes me feel better, a little booze in it is magical if you have the shivers. I hope you feel better.

      • Venuslotus says:

Bella, sorry, I didn’t see your ginger tea suggestion.

      • Erinn says:

Alrighty – I will be making a tea run tonight. And I may have to go bug my father in law for his spicy hamburger soup recipe – I’ve actually had to train myself to like it because it was just so spicy. I think I have some zinc tablets at home, if I remember correctly as well. I’ve heard apple cider vinegar does wonders for so many things – I might have to try that. Regarding the booze part – my great grandmother was Scottish, and everyone in the family tends to swear by taking a small shot of drambuie when sick.

I’m ready to try pretty much anything at this point – I need to be on the phones at work to take support calls on our sites… and my voice keeps cutting out, and sounds so muffled on top of that because my nose is so stuffed.

      • India Andrews says:

@ Venuslotus my mom used to make hot black tea and put in a lot of brandy or whisky. I slept like a baby.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      Probably her junk food diet.

  2. Talie says:

Liam is so left out of the whole Josh & Jen show — small talk isn’t his thing, I guess.

    • Artemis says:

Because the dude doesn’t have charisma. Just like his brother, they are in franchises and they’re the least popular in their group. It’s weird because Liam is more Moviestar material looks wise (although lately he’s been looking like breadpudding with eyes) than Josh but Josh is more interesting. The only ‘cool’ thing about Liam was Miley.

      • Abbott says:

        “breadpudding with eyes” heh.

      • Talie says:

Yeah, they really are both bores. Looks got them in the door in a big way and we know Miley did it for Liam. He attached himself to her quickly. I kind of thought he would try with Jennifer too, now that they are both single.

      • Charlie says:

        Or maybe he’s shy?
I’d probably get terrified next to someone like Jennifer and wouldn’t have said a word.

      • Lex says:

Not defending Liam but I imagine he is used to Jennifer steam rollering over anyone she is around so maybe he just doesn’t bother anymore?

      • Isadora says:

Ok, I might be alone but I think he looks better lately. Maybe I’m immensly fond of breadpudding? 😉 He has more beard and I think it makes him look more mature and manly.

  3. Kro says:

    Can you blame her?

  4. Josefa says:

I normally defend social media, but I totally understand her. People in twitter and tumblr are everything but civil. That’s why I actually side with Anne Hathaway on her whole “poor bullied girl” schtick. The stuff people said about her on the bigger, less filtered platforms was unbelievably nasty.

  5. Franny Days says:

Yikes why would they make her pass out cake with strep!? Germy! I get strep throat at least once a year, so I feel for the girl.

  6. Jen says:

I understand why she may not participate, but any young person her age who says they “don’t understand how Twitter works” is just super dumb.

    • CM says:

That’s a little harsh, no?! I mean, presumably she means she doesn’t know how it works because she hasn’t used it. It’s like me and Buzzfeed or Pinterest or something – I don’t use them, and therefore references to them baffle me. Mind you, that could just be because I’m ancient.

      • Erinn says:

I browse buzzfeed, and usually just creep other peoples’ pinterest accounts for recipes and DIY shiz. I have used twitter a few times. For the longest time – I had no idea how it worked, and was horrified by it. It just isn’t interesting to me. I’m 24 and work in web dev/design, and I still just don’t ‘get it’ as in ‘how does this interest anyone enough to tweet constantly’.

      • whatsmyname? says:

        Agree with @CM & @Erinn.
I don’t use twitter and never have (and I’m younger then her) and I don’t know how to use it. Not knowing how something you’re not using works isn’t stupid.

      • laughing girl says:

        +1000

    • Alyce says:

I’m 27 and don’t use Twitter and don’t really get how it works. For example, it took me months to understand hashtags (that they could help sort content. I’m with J Law 100% on that one.

    • Venuslotus says:

She doesn’t know how to use it because she doesn’t care to..same as me. Does not make her dumb.

    • Allie says:

Not really. I just got a twitter for work and I had my friend give me a crash course in it. And I’m no idiot I have no desire to use twitter. If I didn’t have to run the social media accounts for my job I still wouldn’t know how to use it.
I get what Jen is saying. Social media can be rough for people NOT in the spotlight let alone someone like her. She barely reads her emails so it seems in line with what she’s been saying for years.

      • ElleV says:

You’ve summarized my feelings about social media completely! On it for work, but it just feels like a massive self-congratulatory waste of time.

    • Janet says:

I’ve had a Twitter account for a year now and I have no idea how to use it. I’ll stick to Facebook. There’s not much you can say in 140 characters anyway.

  7. RobinS says:

I am so over this woman. I can’t wait until she just goes away for awhile.

  8. DavidBowie says:

SIT DOWN Donald Sutherland! A real genius?!?! I like JLaw but I think she’s overrated. Is she a good actress? Yes. Is she a genius like Meryl and Cate? NO.

    • Kitten says:

This. She’s a very good actress, but not a great actress.
I like her, but her acting ability really is overrated.

      • Jecko says:

For a 24-year old, her acting abilities are pretty special: ‘genius’ might be overstating things, but when Marion Cotillard describes her as a ‘prodigy’ she’s not far off the mark.

      • Nick says:

She’s nothing special Jecko. It doesn’t matter what Donald or Marion say.

      • Zoos says:

It’s a bit soon to talk about genius. However, I can’t think of another actress who has achieved so much so young, and she’s pretty phenomenal in the HG films. She also works hard and holds it together – fair play.

      • Jecko says:

Nick, you’re right – what would Marion Cotillard know about acting? She must have been fooled by J-Law’s PR team, like everyone else in the film industry.

      • Korra says:

Guys Winter’s Bone is a fantastic film. She was great in it along with her cast members and fully deserving of an Oscar nom. In my opinion she deserved to win for that film. It was that good.

But the girl has been in basically the same stuff for quite a while and she hasn’t grown much. A large part of why people like her is because she is a likeable actress. Her image has been tantamount to the success she has seen, quite possibly why she’s so likeable in Hollywood too. Who am I kidding, that’s a large part of the reason too. And I’m annoyed that we can’t seem to talk about how people’s reaction to her image continues to perpetuate the erasing of older women’s roles. Continues to uphold a certain standard of beauty, intelligence, and personality. Because then “You are a hater who doesn’t think she’s talented and have you heard about her opinions on dieting?!” ????? It’s ridiculously limiting.

I have such an issue with greatest actress ever thing too. I personally feel like we make such a big to do about it with women. Men rarely get put into such a box. No one thinks Michael Fassbender is the greatest actor to have ever lived. Or Benedict Cumberbatch. Or Eddie Redmayne. They are good actors giving good performances. But with women it’s so much more limiting. There are several actresses in her age range that are just as talented as her and just as good. Mia Wasikowska (Meryl streep mentioned her in her GG speech if you’re so focused on pedigree), Saoirse Ronan (who if we’re talking prodigies was actually one), Emma Stone, Anna Kendrick, Carey Mulligan, Margot Robbie, etc, etc, etc. If you don’t think they exist, you choose not to see them.

This list doesn’t even include the number of actresses who are women of color who never get the same shot at fame or get to exercise their abilities in a diverse array of roles. (Again if we’re still talking prodigies Quevenzhane Wallis is the most recent.)

      • Jecko says:

Korra, you make a fair point, although I don’t buy the idea that Lawrence is being cast in the same roles or hasn’t given some genuinely stand-out performances since Winter’s Bone. (Compare the radically different characters she plays in the HG movies as opposed to American Hustle, and the range and technical quality of her work in those roles.) There are many tremendous young female actors around at the moment: to your names, I’d add Brie Larson and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. J-Law is far from being the only exceptional talent in Hollywood at the moment – she’s had more opportunity to show off her talent than some of the others, but their time will come. However, your point about male actors cuts both ways: young female stars like her who deliver top-drawer lead performances are regularly and repeatedly accused of being mediocre, over-hyped or over-rated, which rarely if ever happens to male counterparts. And yes, Lawrence probably gets extra attention because of her looks – but the real problem is that male actors still get far more opportunities than their female counterparts (compare say Channing Tatum’s current career trajectory to Carey Mulligan), and don’t get subject to the same levels of denigration and bitchy commentary.

      • Korra says:

Absolutely. Female actresses face a barage of criticism, but she’s been left largely untouched. Yes the sex crime was disgusting but look how she fares compared to so many others. That whole thing became to be about JLaw and not the fact that so many women are now worried about their careers.

I also disagree that she has. I think her turn in SLP was decent but her run in American Hustle mediocre. Her nomination for Winter’s Bone was well deserved and that momentum, along with Hunger Games and her likeable personality carried into being nominated for both SLP and American Hustle.

Exactly not deserving of the prodigy status that she gets. Good, not great. I think she gives good performances. Some hit or miss and that’s not a bad thing. That doesn’t take away from the fact that she’s a good actress. I don’t think that she’s so talented that she can play a 33 year old single mother of 3. I just don’t. Can’t blame her because there are so few roles out there for women anyways. Hopefully she makes good on her wish to return to indies because that’s where I feel like she can really flex her skills and take a lot more risks and have more diverse roles. Maybe she can produce them.

I can’t get over the fact that people don’t start caring about how female actresses are being treated until their favorite one, their best friend gets criticized even a little. The one who fits all beauty ideals to a tee and represents a modicum of personality. Building her up to be so great and be the best among her age group when her age group hasn’t even been given a fair chance is just as dumb as trashing her for something stupid. She is overwhelmingly well liked. So well liked that even her offensive quotes aren’t scrutinized like other people. That is rare for an actress.

I honestly can’t blame her. She has to play the game to have a sustainable career. Men have many more options and therefore don’t have to worry about the things she does.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Agree. She’s overrated, she’s a good actress, but I honestly don’t get the hype with this woman.

    • Jecko says:

Korra, I agree that Lawrence’s personality means she escapes some of the denigration that other female actresses attract – but I don’t think that means that it’s only fair that she should be dragged down like everyone else, or that she gets away in general with behaving badly. Frankly, I think some of the allegedly offensive comments she has made are fairly minor passing slips, and people are willing to give her a break because she goes off-script, is self-depreciating and comes across as relatively human. Projecting personality is part of the Hollywood game – and she excels at that part of her career. Yes, it may be unfair that her profile overshadows others, and I suspect if I was Brie Larson or Shailene Woodley I’d be thoroughly sick of hearing all about J-Law this or J-Law that – but I’m not sure that’s her fault, and the media overkill will doubtless die down when the HG films end.

We’ll have to agree to disagree about American Hustle – I know some people thought her performance was overkill, but I thought it was an exceptional, with impressively nuanced character development happening alongside the flamboyance. Her scene in the dining room with Jack Huston was particularly good, I thought. Her work in SLP was very charismatic, but much more conventional – I agree that her standout performances in WB and the first HG film were what really landed her the Oscar.

      • Korra says:

I didn’t say it was her fault nor do I think she deserves a barrage of hate. My criticism is and always has been about the media storm around her.

And yeah we will. I just don’t think she was so good in them to be deserving of an Oscar Nom for those films. She was too young.

  9. A. Key says:

Oh get over yourself. No matter what they tell you, the world doesn’t actually revolve around you, Jenny.

    • Jecko says:

What on earth has she said that makes you believe she thinks the world revolves around her? J-Law is massively popular – like it or not, her interviews bring in the clicks like no one else at present, and if people ask her about social media why shouldn’t she answer?

  10. Lexie says:

Well, great she won’t join twitter because it would be a real disaster..She’s already said so many dumb and problematic things that her account would be one big mess. Unless it would be 100% controlled by her PR team. They always can make up some new goofy, relatable stories about pizza and dorritos we haven’t already heard.
Also, a real genius?! Donald, I know you have to say nice things about a star of your movie, she’s not so bad actress, maybe she’s not even so insufferable as she seems but God,it’s just too much!

  11. Tippy says:

Some people are just more prone to illness but for a 23 year old to suffer from ulcers is probably a direct result of stress.

She needs to find ways to deal with the stress or it will eventually overwhelm her and shorten her career.

    • Alex2 says:

She definitely needs to slow down her schedule. Being off for the entire summer was a good move for her. But she needs to learn to say no sometimes. Like when DOR wants you to film during your only break in a year…say no next time.
But she won’t be carrying two franchises after this year so that helps. And unless she signs onto another x-men her schedule after the first half of 2015 will be light in comparison

  12. Pattie says:

I’m not so sure that J-Law really divides opinion. She’s widely admired. There is a minority that are sick of her omnipresence and come on sites like this to vent and go on about the odd dubious thing she’s said in passing. But so far she’s proved remarkably adept at dodging backlash.

    • maria says:

I agree with you, Pattie. Besides, it seems to be the same people always complaining about her. I’m not trying to be mean, but what is the age group here? I have feeling this behaviour is coming from grown women. I don’t visit Celebitchy often, but when I do, the comments are always the same. Jennifer seems like a funny, sweet, and sharp girl. I’ve seen enough interviews with her to understand she’s quick-witted. Last year’s interview with Jon Stewart was one her best interviews. It seems if you’re young, talented, successful and pretty women will turn on you and pick on every minute detail to justify their dislike of you. Did she kill your puppy? Steal your boyfriend? Seriously, get a life. By the way, I get sick and stay sick all winter. I have a stressful job and very little time for anything else. I’m sick with a chest cold right now, in fact. It’s not unheard of.

      • Alex2 says:

Yep spot on. This is what some actresses say when they talk about how they can’t win the game. Men never get this type of scorn for innocuous comments. But we regularly take an It Girl and tear her down to pieces. Luckily I think Jen knows the game and doesn’t seem to care too much. I just think it’s sad because she is young and she does stuff that my friends and I do often (we are the same age). She gets ridiculous hate from a small minority for…what I don’t know.

  13. lucy2 says:

I can’t blame her for avoiding social media. I’m surprised so many celebrities do it, I would think the constant barrage of negativity would be really depressing.

  14. Veronica says:

If celebs were smart, they’d follow her lead. The Internet isn’t just a free for all, it’s unforgiving. Make a poorly worded comment or get drunk enough to be a dumbass online, and there’s a permanent record for it. That’s not even getting into the misogyny, racism, homophobia out there. (Just look at what Zoe Quinn and Anita S. went through, are still going through!) I’m not a celeb, and I stay off most social networks like Twitter. Past a certain age, you should just grow out of that drama to a large extent.

  15. Frodo lives says:

Some celebrities don’t have much of a choice when it comes to the entertainment business. In order to keep your name, your image out there you have to have a social media account. A lot of newbies book jobs because of social media, which is unfortunate since you talent should speak for itself. I think it’s smart for her not to have a social media account because the hate some women entertainers receive can be unbearable at times.

  16. JJ says:

I don’t get her appeal, she seem like a very ordinary girl with a low brow sense of humor. Ever since she got her very undeserved Oscar for SLP, and now her stupid PR showmance with Goop’s leftover. It just completely baffles me why she is such a big star.

  17. Bat says:

Her rape scream thing was a bit offensive, but she’s all right. She’s as close to “the most” likeable as you’re ever going to get. Her problem is that she’s overexposed. Acting-wise, she’s reliable.

  18. Barbiegirl says:

I really like her, but I have to admit it is pretty rude to constantly interrupt people and being always about “me, me, me”… I understand she is the star but She could also be a bit more gracious/polite…

this reminds me of the rude eye rolling at the SAG during the ensemble award…

  19. RPG says:

“Donald Sutherland raved about JLaw to MTV News.”

Death, taxes, bears shitting in the woods, actors raving over their costars. Moving on.
