Dave Chappelle: ‘There’s a high possibility that I bought reefer from Idris Elba’

dave1

I miss Dave Chappelle. Since he flew the coop in 2005, Chappelle has been keeping a low profile. But in the past few years, he has started rejoining the comedy world, doing stand-up tours and giving some interviews. Then, this summer, he did a 10-night gig at Radio City Music Hall which sold out in a matter of hours. That alone was probably enough to get him this GQ “Man of the Year” cover – he’s being honored along with Shailene Woodley, Steve Carell and Chris Pratt. GQ actually released their cover story days ago, but I only had the time to read the full piece yesterday, and I thought I would share. It’s not the funniest thing I’ve ever read (although I did laugh out loud several times), but it’s fascinating. Dave is an interesting, brilliant man and what’s surprising is that he just seems… fine. No drama. He’s not looking to pick a fight with anyone. He’s not crazy. It’s actually a fantastic, thoughtful read – go here to read the full piece. Some highlights:

He used to live close to D’Angelo: “I haven’t talked to him personally in a while, but the last time I called him, he had a long outgoing message on his machine. It was like a Malcolm X speech. And the last part was so intense. He was like, ‘The price of freedom is death!’ Beeeep! I didn’t even leave that dude a message. I just hung up the phone. Like, just listening to D’Angelo’s answering machine puts you on the no-fly list, it’s so militant.”

One item on his bucket list: “For one year, I want to do this thing where I guest-star on as many television shows as I possibly can. I love television. The fact that television ultimately made me famous was very gratifying for me. Chris Tucker did it in movies, and Chris Rock did it from his stand-up, which was very impressive. But you know, the thing that people most will remember me for is Chappelle’s Show. If I were to never do anything else, that show would be a culmination of what was a very long and tedious process of me learning how to be in the television business….I’d be a zombie in The Walking Dead. A corpse on CSI. I’d be the first black guy to f–k Olivia Pope on Scandal….”

He bought weed from Idris Elba back in the day: “So he used to work at Carolines. During that era of my life, there’s a high possibility that I bought reefer from Idris. Fast-forward to when I was doing Chappelle’s Show. Idris would come to the set sometimes. Not the set where we’d be filming sketches, but the set when we did the live portion of the show and we showed the audience sketches. It used to be a real hot ticket in New York. There’s a lot of women who used to work on the show…all very professional, with the single exception when Idris would come around. It doesn’t matter how big a star would be on the show, when he came around, women would just lose their g-ddamn minds.”

Women & the media: “I also think that women in show business—and this is a sweeping generalization—they have a very different existence than men. Paparazzi chase ’em a little harder. The critics, I think, are a little meaner. I mean, look at Britney Spears, like, having a kid. She’s a new mom, and I don’t know if you have kids or not, but it’s a very sensitive time in a woman’s life when they’re a new mom. And the way the media was criticizing her mothering, I was like, That sh-t is ice-cold. ‘Cause even if you’re super-strong, that sh-t will f–k with you.

Fatherhood: “I have this thing where I meet people whose kids are, like, superhuman perfect: “She speaks three languages now, blah blah.” That used to make me feel sh-tty. Like, “Aw man, I really have to crack the whip and do this and that.” But then I watch their kid for a while and then watch mine. And my kids look actually happy. And I learned early on that perfectionism and parenthood is a toxic combination for everybody involved. In other words, so many things can flourish naturally. All you gotta do is make sure the soil’s right. But I view myself more like a guide than a ruler. Their mother’s the ruler.

On Tyler Perry: “He’s a pretty prolific dude. What he was able to accomplish is very, very impressive. There’s no way you could look at it and not be impressed. And what I like about what he did initially with those Madea movies is that it was an after-church crowd. Like, he was the first guy I saw in mainstream media that was speaking directly to that audience. I like that about him….”

Tyler Perry versus Spike Lee: “I can’t see how my life is harder because Tyler Perry exists. You know? I mean, I can certainly debate the artistic merits of his movies or the lack thereof, but to me that’s almost an irrelevant conversation, because I’m more impressed with what he was able to achieve. And I think that if I were Spike Lee, maybe I’d have certain issues. But I’m not mad at Tyler Perry. I’m happy there was a Spike; I’m happy there was a Tyler. I’m not gonna say, “Oh, I love Tyler Perry movies.” But that’s kind of not the point. There are people who do love those movies, so why shouldn’t somebody be making sh-t for them? Spike’s not gonna make that movie for them.”

[From GQ]

There’s also a lengthy conversation about Kanye and you can tell that Dave is a big fan and Kanye is big fan of Dave’s too. Dave is asked about Kanye saying celebrity treatment is the new civil rights movement and Dave sort of defends him, but in a very thoughtful way. I lol’d at the D’Angelo part and the Idris part. But really, I love his thoughts about everything!

    Thanks for posting this!
I think I have seen every episode of The Chappelle show at least 5 times.
    I love him.

    • doofus says:

      • Ag says:

HAHAHAHA! love that sketch. so, so on-point. timeless.

i love the chappelle show too, my DVDs (yes!) of it look totally “worn out and depleted.” (my son called pics of chappelle “mama” when he was really little, which was hilarious.) and this interview is great. i love what he had to say about parenthood.

      • mimif says:

Ha, that’s awesome about your kid. My dvd’s are worn out too. Paul Mooney and Eddie Murphy’s brother and the Prince sketches, holy shit I’m lol’ing over here just thinking about it.

      • Ag says:

me too, haha. rick james is gold. and prince being so little and so hardcore, haha. (my mom once physically ran into prince while turning a street corner, neither one of them was really looking where they were walking, i guess. she was appropriately impressed, but also shocked how short he was. my mom is 5’6″, and he was way shorter than she is.) man, now i want to go home and watch some chappelle show.

      • Hawkeye says:

My DVDs are also “worn out and depleted!” One of the best things about that show is when you meet someone else who quotes the show. “His legs were like linguine!” “What am I gonna do about my legs?!”

    • Someonestolemyname1 says:

Dave is one of the funniest comedians ever. He cracks me up. LMAO. 🙂

    • Moneypenny says:

      Game: blouses.

    • Moneypenny says:

And honestly, there isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t wish I had a home stenographer.

  2. Kiddo says:

    Brilliant and hilarious.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I liked what he said about everything, especially kids.

We missed you, Kiddo. Mimif and I drank some mimosas and tried to summon your spirit yesterday. Did it work? xxoo

  3. Sixer says:

Oh my goodness! I really like him! He has no name at all here in the UK, so I’ll keep an eye out in future.

    • g0tch4 says:

Oh you’re missing out! A lot of his Chappelle Show funniest clips are on youtube. I rewatched a bunch the other day and they’re all still so funny. Charlie Murphy! What did the five fingers say to the face? SLAP! Too funny.

    • mimif says:

Sixer, if I could, I would gift you the box set of his tragically short lived show. The dude is the funniest thing out there. Ever.

      • QQ says:

        EVER EVER EVER

all his stand up specials I have em and Laugh like a lunatic all alone at work!

the man is just brilliant, adorable, funny and QUICK!

      • Sixer says:

Seriously: I’ve only ever heard of him on this site. Although I’m not a huge watcher of comedy, I generally at least am aware of the names. I love everything he has to say here, though, so I will look out for him.

    • Isabelle says:

Watch the hbo special that’s on youtube. One of funniest & most intelligent comedians..

  4. Lb says:

Dave Chappelle always gives a thoughtful, intelligent interview. Love him.

    • mom2two says:

Yes he does. He’s a very intelligent man. Chappelle Show was an awesome show. Even my Dad would laugh until he cried at some of the bits on that show.

  5. Cel says:

The man is a genius. I saw him live in Seattle last year and I was surprised at how buff he was. That man’s upper body was absolutely ripped. But his stand up was absolutely on point. He wasn’t arrogant but you know you are listening to a master.

    • mimif says:

I would give my left tata to see him live, especially in Seattle. #jeal

ETA: yeah you’re right, dude looks ripped. He was much more wispy back in the day. Looks good on him!

      • kls2686 says:

He came to Seattle last month! It was a really good show at the Neptune (U District), he was super cool and still funny as ever. And YES, he was SWOLE and it was weird. I’m just so used to skinny pothead Dave from his show, so to see him really as a grown MAN, was almost unsettling haha! Really made me miss him and his comedy. He needs a new TV show!!

      • mimif says:

Yeah, that’s it, he totally looks like Russel Wilson or some shit now. I miss the Neptune, so rad you got to see him there!

  6. susiecue says:

Oh Dave, how we have missed you! What a great interview.

  7. Pix says:

I’m so glad Dave’s back, I hope he stays!

  8. Kali says:

An intelligent man is great. An eloquent man is great. When a man is both intelligent AND eloquent? D@mn. I need to rewatch Chappelle’s show!!

Shonda, if, by some fluke you happen to be lurking, please get him on “Scandal” and have him be a man worthy of Olivia Pope. Both Fitz and Jake are creeps. #sorrynotsorry

  9. Jess says:

I’m really impressed with everything he said, he sounds so level headed. I was blown away by his comments about Britney, think maybe he identifies with her mental issues and very public breakdown, also loved his thoughts on parenthood. I miss him and hope we get to see more!

  10. Tifygodess24 says:

The first DVD I ever bought was Half Baked and he was hilarious. Even better in the Chapelle show. I was sad when he disappeared for quite a while so I love when he does interviews or we hear about his shows. I love that GQ did this cover.

  11. Falkor says:

Chappelle is my own personal Jesus. Here is my miracle child posing hard and getting side-eyed by one of my Chappelle cardboard stands in the background because when else will I have occasion to post it?

    p.s.- prrrr!

    • JustChristy says:

I’m not sure which is more fierce- your miracle child, or Chappelle. This is a tough one. Can kitty whisper, “thanks, ribs!” That could clinch it.

      • Falkor says:

Oh you know that fat tramp is all ’bout the ribs, but she hasn’t quite got English down yet. She’s the patron saint of the itis, though, for sure.

    • mimif says:

Ha! So glad I clicked. 😀

  12. Aminta says:

He seems like a genuinely awesome guy with great character. Great read!

  13. Leigh_S says:

I like Chappelle the man more than the performer 🙂
His interviews on the Actor’s studio and with Maya Angelou are funny, intelligent, thoughtful and heartbreaking.

  14. INeedANap says:

I love his commentary about women in Hollywood, and about his children. You can tell he’s very involved. I wonder if they’re old enough to get his humor?

  15. Grace says:

    Yaaaaay! I love you Dave!!!!

  16. mimif says:

Can we get a HONK for more DC?

  17. JustChristy says:

When I was a kid, I had a neighbor who had known Prince back in high school. This guy was pretty tall, not too big or too small, someone who you’d think would be better than fair at basketball. And he said Prince could handily whip his ass. At the time, I did not appreciate Prince, and was basically kind of “yeah, right” about the whole thing.

Until, Charlie Murphy. Sorry, Mr. Steve. Sorry, Prince.

  18. apsutter says:

Love his comparisons of Spike Lee and Tyler Perry. Incredibly well put…both intelligently and diplomatically stated. Saw him last summer during the Oddball Tour and he was pretty funny, plus the crowd was really on his side which was great.

    • mimif says:

Right, no shade (or if any shade it was so very subtle) and just very complimentary and appreciative of everyone involved. Chappelle is the consummate pro.

  19. MissTrial says:

Almost choked on my Oreos just reading the lede

  20. Ella says:

I was physically sick after reading the post and some of the comments on the Eminem thread but Dave made it all better. Women-hating d-kheads take note.
