Kate Hudson on her body: ‘Everybody wants some sort of secret & there just isn’t’

Goldie Hawn's Inaugural "Love In For Kids" Benefit
I have to hand it to Kate Hudson, she’s realistic and honest about the fact that she works out daily and watches what she eats to lose weight. Kate isn’t one of those celebrities claiming that “running around after the kids” keeps the pounds off. Kate has consistently admitted how hard she works to look great, and she said that after she had her second baby she literally worked out for six hours a day to lose weight. In a new interview with US Weekly, Kate said that you don’t have to work out for two hours daily to lose weight but that you have to do something every day. She also said that there’s no secret or trick to it.

Kate Hudson… admitted to Us Weekly at her mom Goldie Hawn’s charity event Love In For Kids on Nov. 21 that she works her “ass off” to stay in shape and there’s simply no other secret to looking good.

After dishing that she loves a “real serious double double burger, fries, and Coke,” the Fabletics designer, 35, admitted that she has to work hard in the gym to maintain her perfect physique.

You [have to] work your ass off, that’s the only way. [And] you have to eat right,” Hudson told Us. “Everybody wants some sort of secret and there just isn’t, it’s just you have to work out.”

The mom of two, who has been practicing Pilates for 15 years, said the key is to be consistent with your workouts.

“I wouldn’t say [I work out] a lot, just consistently…People think for some reason you have to work out for two and a half hours…but, it can be little. It can be 20 minutes, it could be 40 minutes, but you have to [get it in],” she said. “You can’t do like two weeks and go like do two days and then take a week off and then do three days and then go, ‘Why aren’t I [seeing results?] I don’t get it.’ You know, you just got to do it — sad, like anything else in life!”

[From US Magazine]

I recently lost weight with MyFitnessPal and I don’t tell people about it unless they ask. No one wants to hear that I weigh and measure everything I eat and enter it all into an app. People invariably say that it sounds like too much work. (Once you do it it becomes second nature.) I also try to work out more and while I’m in no way close to Kate Hudson’s level of fitness, I agree that you have to be consistent about it. To me it’s more about diet than exercise though, because even when I exercise my butt off I can ruin it by eating too much. That’s why I’m not really buying that Kate Hudson eats a double burger, fries and a coke for a treat. Maybe she does that once a month.

Also, genes play into this. Look at her mom! I know it’s more the work she puts into it, and she’ll tell you about it. Good for her.

Small portions, working out and smoking. The end.

    • Addison DeWitt says:

Thank you! I always think about her smoking habit when she talks about weight loss /fitness. It’s like how Jackie Kennedy said she kept thin by micromanaging her diet. Nope. 3 packs of smokes a day was more like it.

    • Jaques Strap says:

It’s math. 150 lb semi active female needs 1500 calories/day to maintain. It takes 3000 calories to make 1lb of fat, figure it out. I chocolate milk has 380 calories, a chocolate cookie 200 calories, a BK whopper combo has 900 calories, it does not take long to reach 1500 calories. You can count carbs, atkins, yoga what ever, it is math. BTW, I am 50 years old 184, I eat like a bird and my fat friends laugh at my lunch, we had a company pool party last summer, they stopped laughing….

  2. BendyWindy says:

She is so beautiful. And she’s right. I’ve been lollygagging on getting fit, but I just need to do the work.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That’s the thing – we all know exactly what it takes to be fit . We just wish the answer was something else.

  4. CuriousCole says:

I’m not a big fan of Kate’s, but I admire her honesty here. Some people think there’s a massive secret to weight-loss that the universe is withholding from them. It’s down to mundane routines like being active and eating reasonably, which do become second nature, as CB noted.

  5. GingerCrunch says:

They really are the cutest mom/daughter duo!

  6. RobN says:

Is she acting anymore? I feel like all she does these days is do interviews with women’s magazines.

  7. Kiddo says:

    So…she doesn’t act anymore?

  8. Lydia M. says:

Sometimes I look at these celebs and I have serious body envy. It’s a fact that they look amazingly great, like Kate does here. But I don’t think I could be happy on such a restrictive lifestyle. I would be grumpy and a nightmare to be around.

In the end I settled for a 30 minutes a day workout routine and a moderately healthy diet (i eat healthy most of the time but i dont deprive myself of eating anything i want, but in moderation).

I’m not covering Sports Illustrated anytime soon but I think i am decent shape. And i am healthy too. For me that seems better for your state of mind than fighting Mother Nature against the natural process that comes with aging and hormonal changes. But I guess that’s a very personal opinion and different people have different priorities in life.

    • Jaques Strap says:

Staying fit, looking your best and taking pride in your appearance has great rewards, most people are fat because they don’t care anymore.

  9. AuroraO says:

I keep trying to lose weight with the my fitness pal app but I always end up cheating. Always.

  10. shizwhat says:

She’s right and you know what else? I believe her when she says she indulges with a burger and fries and I don’t think its once a month. I’d believe she indulges once a week at least. If you do the work CONSISTENTLY for weeks, months, years… you really can indulge with no detriment.

I’m about two years younger than her and I have two kids and I maintain 123lbs on my 5’6 frame just by eating clean and working out for an hour a day at least 5x per week. I dont measure or weight my food or anything like that. I dont count calories. I can see how those things are helpful if you really arent sure about portion sizes but after awhile that kind of thing shouldnt be necessary. My two biggest rules for food is to make choices that pack the most nutrition and eat in a balanced way. Plan your meals to some degree so you aren’t too heavy on bread one day or too heavy on vegetables etc.

There really is no secret, no trick, no method, no approach. Just be sensible and for the love of God dont forget to indulge. If you dont indulge you wont be able to maintain the CONSISTENCY that is the key to everything. When Friday nights hit I break out the chips, alcohol and cookies and hit it hard… and sometimes that extends right through to Sunday haha!

    • Kitten says:

..posted pretty much the same thing right below you 😉

    • Louminary says:

I am the exact same! I love food, just love it, and have absolutely no willpower when it comes to dieting. Simply isn’t an option for me.
My diet is ok – definitely room for improvement! But I adore pastry, potato chips, pizza, butter, bread, all that unhealthy stuff!
But for the last 5 years or so I have been running regularly and playing soccer twice a week. The more I run the more I can run so Im up to about 4-5x a week, 9-10k at a time. I have some friends who get a little cheesed off that I have a trim figure when I eat pretty poorly sometimes. I remind them that damn it, I work really bloody hard to be able to eat this way!!
They also find it weird that I can discipline myself to run 10k 5 times a week but no discipline when it comes to a large bag of Miss Vickies chili and sour cream! That’s just the way Im made I guess!

    • Jenna says:

Yup, I believe she probably does indulge regularly. I’m sure she’s somewhat disciplined about her indulgences but at some point a lot of that stuff does just become habit. I went from being a chubby teen to a fairly thin adult and really at this point staying active and eating well is pretty much second nature to me. It takes a lot of discipline initially but eventually it becomes habit and then you wonder how you ever ate or didn’t exercise the way you used to. I can totally demolish a bag of kettle chips and when the urge really strikes me, I will, but 90% of the time I really prefer to be doing things like taking a hike or going running and eating a lot of vegetables and other healthy stuff. I don’t enjoy feeling overly full anymore and I don’t like the way I feel if I “indulge” too often. My body is actually pretty good at telling me when it’s time for the junk food to stop or when it’s time to go work off some energy with a run. I get people asking me how I stay “so thin” and really, there is no magic fix, you just have to do the work and stay consistent. I don’t even have good genetics like Kate’s on my side and I still manage to make it work!

    • Bridget says:

I disagree with you a bit there. Kate is pretty dang fit and toned as well as a mother of 2 and well over 30. While I don’t doubt that she has an ‘occasional’ indulgence, every week is pushing it. But keep in mind that she’s keeping Hollywood thin, not normal people thin.

      • shizwhat says:

She looks pretty normal thin to me. Indulging once a week won’t ruin any hard work consistently done.

      • Jenna says:

Really depends on the magnitude of her indulgence. If it’s just having a burger and fries once a week in lieu of the usual grilled chicken salad for dinner, then yes, I can believe she does it weekly. I do doubt that her indulgences/cheats/whatever extend through the weekend (or over multiple meals) very often though, or that she’s eating multiple burgers or super sized orders of fries.

      • Bridget says:

I have to point out that you guys are the ones that decided that Kate must be indulging weekly. I’m kind of confused why you’re so set on a point that is solely your own speculation. She is very thin and has visibly defined abs (why do you think she’s selling workout clothes?). Once you start working to maintain lower and lower percentages of body fat an individual gets fewer and fewer indulgences – once every few weeks or so, if not only once a month. There’s a difference between normal person thin and Hollywood fit. That double cheeseburger indulgence with fries and a coke? Lets say that’s an extra 500 calories added to the normal daily intake. Do it weekly, 52 weeks a year, and that’s a weight gain of 7-8 poundsover the course of just one year (with one pound being approximately 3500 calories).

    • Emma13 says:

Yes! I follow weight watchers through the week (for the most part) and workout for about 20 minutes 3 times a week. When friday hits I stop by 711 and start my weekend off with a candy bar and continue on into sunday with whatever I like. I feel pretty comfortable at 130 on a 5’5 frame, but it’s slowly working it’s way down as I amp up my workouts.

  11. Bridget says:

As the saying goes, “abs are made in the kitchen”

And there’s no “secret” to losing weight aside from a good healthy diet and getting in plenty of exercise. Anyone that tells you otherwise is just trying to sell you something.

    • JB says:

“Abs are made in the kitchen” and “you can’t outrun your fork” are my favorites. I do pretty well with 20-30 minutes of good exercise a day (on top of tracking steps and just making sure I move more overall) and eating as clean as I can. I pop a cola and a bag of chips on the weekend and all is well. (I just can’t pop ten colas and 20 bags of chips. That’s the trick.)

      • Jaques Strap says:

Great comment! I like pizza, but if I really want it, I will imagine it attached to my waist, because that is where it will end up, keeps me from eating it. Stay fit!

  12. Kitten says:

    I believe her.

After a long Saturday night of craft beer-drinking, my BF and I got chicken fingers and pizza from Pizza Hut and ate it in bed-it was AMAZING.

This was after a couple weeks of working really hard at the gym and eating healthy. Last Sunday we got burgers and fries and beers at our local dive bar. I usually indulge on the weekends and play it safe during the week. It’s completely possible to do this and maintain a healthy weight but the key is consistency, exactly like Kate said.

    • Bridget says:

Its only when you want to get that totally shredded, really low body fat that you have to really cut down on the cheat days. Someone posted an infographic on that subject on Facebook yhe other day and it made me sad just reading it. And I”m the idiot that will run at 4am to get my marathon training in

      • Kitten says:

Oh yeah absolutely agree. You also have to cut out alcohol entirely, which I’m sorry but NO.

You’re right though, if you REALLY want to change your body you have to get strict-no processed foods, no cheat days, no alcohol, no fun.

  13. Renee says:

Her body is sick. She just needs to dress better…

  14. Lisa says:

If you work out consistently, your metabolism should allow you to indulge. One decadent meal should not lead to a 5-lb weight gain overnight. People are so scared of food these days.

  15. Fiona says:

Genetics play a bigger part than people realize but it has to be paired with hard work or else you be be kind of thin, but you won’t be healthy or toned. Kate obviously works hard.

I couldn’t do my fitness pal, but I’m 20 and naturally thin. It was a little too much pressure for me. I would have a cup of coffee and my peanut butter toast and it would tell me I had 800 calories left for the whole day. Then I’d walk around and think about that number all day long. Maybe when I’m at a different stage in my life, I’ll find it more helpful. For now, I eat as healthy as a college student can and go to the gym 4 days a week.

  16. Jackson says:

What I really want to know about is her face. Her skin looks amazing and sure, while eating right and lots of water helps, she is doing something that I would love to try. I definitely think she does botox, but what else?? I already know how to lose weight – tell me how to make my skin look like yours, Kate!

  17. paola says:

She’s always been quite slender and fit. I think for her at this point is more about mainting than working out to lose weight. I believe she eats junk food because she is naturally thin already. I appreciate her honesty. It’s quite refreshing actually and if you’ve been working your ass off why lie about it? I’m very proud of my achievements at the gym and I bet she is too.

  18. BooBooLaRue says:

The thing is, this is their job! They have time to take care of themselves and get primped and plumped, and pumped. While you my friend are going to the store, taking care of the kids, running after the promotion, taking care of the hubby/partner/wife/elderly parent/and you. Sorry but I loathe this talentless twit of an actress.

    • Fiona says:

Oh come on. I see your point if she lost a drastic amount of weight in a very short period of time, obviously the rich have an advantage. But I know a lot of women who work full time, married with kids, who find 30 minutes to go to the gym or jog around the neighborhood. She’s not saying anything crazy here. She’s saying be consistent and eat well. That’s not something the average woman can’t do.

  19. jammypants says:

She is right. There is nothing simple about staying in shape. If you do these things everyday and moderately, it becomes part of your routine and life. I workout for 30 minutes everyday and I eat very healthy (carbs is the biggest culprit so go for complex carbs). It should be part of your everyday like showering and going to work, etc.

  20. MelissaManifesto says:

I think there is a difference between skinny and toned-skinny, most people want the latter, but contrary to popular beliefs, one does not need to starve to be skinny if you were already to begin with. It all starts with genes, followed by whatever lifestyle and diet you can afford to choose. For instance, Beyonce will never be Kate’s size, yet they are both incredibly fit.

Also one thing that is rarely mentioned when it comes to fitness and beauty is how terribly expensive and time consuming it can be. Healthy food costs much more than junk food, there are very little that you can get for $5, except maybe cereal bars/to-go oatmeal/yogurt as opposed to at least three sandwiches in McDonald’s dollar menu or a couple bags of Doritos.

Hopefully women will learn how to be happy with their bodies and if they do want to enhance it, they can do so at their own pace instead of feeling pressured.

  21. roxy750 says:

As if you choose not to work out and let your body be what it wants, especially after having a kid is such a bad, frowned upon loser thing to do. The only way to get recognition, status, respect and popularity with all the “importnt” people of the world is how your body looks. And it must be perfect, or else you are NOTHING. Sickening. Women need to stop perpetuating this sh&t!

    • Fiona says:

Obviously it’s a choice and we do have an idealized standard of beauty but fitness has a place in our lives and I think she was pretty fair in discussing what she does for her body. She wasn’t pretentious or shaming anyone, what she says is true. If you’re going to work out, consistency is important to seeing results. She said nothing about perfection or being a certain size.

    • Jaques Strap says:

Nothing wrong with trying to look your best to impress, if that is not possible, what is to be done? Should we lower the standard? Excuses are easy, striving to be the best is the winner’s way out! Look in the mirror people, if you are not happy do something about it, put down the twinkies and make some moves!

  22. TW says:

Her posture is stunning. Does Pilates do that, I wonder?

  23. Mary Jo says:

It is not a secret but there is a recipe: good genes, hard work and dieting. And it helps if you have the money and time for beauty treatments.

  24. JenniferJustice says:

I’m glad she’s honest. It’s refreshing to hear somebody say I succeed because I work hard. People don’t want to hear about discipline and sacrifice. They want to think it’s from surgery or drugs that help you starve yourself. If you burn more than you take in, you’ll lose weight. If your burn as much as you take in, you’ll maintain. Genes help and I will say Kate got Goldie’s genes, but she does what it takes to keep her svelte figure. Walk! That’s all you have to do. Walk and don’t eat so much #as I give away the other 1/2 of my sandwhich# 🙁

  25. I think she has one of the most beautiful figures in Hollywood

  26. Naddie says:

If i could make this woman a question, I would ask if there will be a sequel for The skeleton key. Don’t care about her body at all.

  27. bebe says:

this succubus drained all the talent out of Matt Bellamy
