Marianne Faithfull: Kate Moss stole my style, they’re no longer friends

It seems strange to me that 60s rock icon Marianne Faithfull would take crap from anyone, much less a coked-up supermodel who barely weighs 100 pounds. Faithfull admits that she “doesn’t give a s–t” about it really, but Marianne still cared enough to mouth off about Kate Moss basically copying everything about her, from the clothes to the rock star boyfriend, to the drugs. Oh, the drugs. You’d think the drugs alone would have been enough to keep the Faithfull-Moss friendship alive, but it didn’t.

Faithfull spoke to The Times, and The Daily Mirror has the quotes. Faithfull said of Moss, “she’s not really my friend, I thought she was, but she’s very clever.” I have a lot of words to describe Kate Moss, but “clever” isn’t one of them. The Daily Mirror has more:

Marianne Faithfull has launched an extraordinary attack on former friend Kate Moss, calling the supermodel a ‘vampire’ who stole her style. The 62-year-old singer says that, although she and Kate were once close, they are no longer on speaking terms.

‘She’s not really my friend. I thought she was, but she’s very clever,’ she said.

Marianne, who famously had a relationship with Mick Jagger in the late 1960s, even accuses the 35-year-old of emulating her choice of men, comparing the Rolling Stone to Kate’s new boyfriend Jamie Hince.

‘Now I see pictures of her with a boy who looks like Mick Jagger, and her looking like me. So there was a reason. It’s one of her gigs to do me,’ she told The Times.

Kate and Marianne, apparently drawn to each other by a shared love of fashion and rock stars, were once a regular night-time fixture in Central London and even holidayed together in the Bahamas. At the time the iconic star said that she and Kate, who is almost thirty years her junior, were kindred spirits.

‘She’s very complex – she’s very like me. She’s a Capricorn. I think she’s great,’ she has said. However the pair’s friendship ‘suddenly soured’ some time later, according to Marianne.

‘You know, it’s OK. I don’t give a s***. But I was quite offended at the time. We were very fond of each other. And then it suddenly soured,’ she added.

‘She’s very clever, but she isn’t at all educated. We don’t have any [common] references. Except music.”

The singer, who is returning to music after taking a long break following treatment for breast cancer, was famously found naked, covered in just a fur rug, during a police drugs raid on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards’s Sussex mansion in the Sixties.

From The Daily Mirror

What’s particularly funny about this story is that for the past few years, Kate Moss and Sienna Miller have allegedly been feuding over the same issue. Moss thought Sienna was stealing her style and her “look”. For the record, Marianne was the original. Kate Moss copied some of Marianne’s look and lifestyle choices, and blended them with other influences. Sienna then copied both Marianne and Kate.

I wonder why Kate and Marianne’s relationship soured? I don’t care if she did go to rehab, I still think Kate’s doing the nose candy. And it probably negatively affects all of her relationships. Especially the one with her daughter.

Marianne can be colossal windbag, but if it’s an arguement with Kate Moss I’ll support her all the way.

But on what planet does Johnny Depp, Jefferson Hack, Pete Doherty or the latest one look anything remotely like Mick Jagger, then or now?

  2. Mairead says:

Damn – I miss the edit function.

I meant to add – unless Marianne is refering to Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream, but that’s very tenuous.

  3. cee says:

she was with daniel craig, too.

  4. gg says:

Oh please. What model doesn’t dress in sloppy hippie chic, do coke and have a rock star boyfriend?

Not very many I can think of. And if not actually doing all that, they sure look like it.

  5. barneslr says:

gg-you said basically what I was going to say. Doing drugs and dating rock stars is not territory exclusive to Marianne Faithful…who BTW hasn’t been relevent in what…25 years or so?

I’m no fan of Kate Moss (far, far from it, actually), but really, can’t Faithful come up with some other way to drum up some publicity? This is just stupid.

    What the?

  7. Ash says:

This woman is talking nonsense. Who cares if anyone is copying her. She sure is stretching for this one. She sounds very childish.

  8. Frenchie says:

There is only a couple of ways to go in live. I would usually prefer Marianne over Kate (I owe her a first orgasm) but what does she want : trademark her supposed lifestyle ??

  9. Ophelia says:

I love Marianne’s music. Personally, I don’t think someone has to be constantly releasing things to be ‘relevant’; that’s why they are classics. Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and John Lennon have been dead for a long time but I still think they are incredibly culturally relevant.

@Frenchie- You owe Marianne Faithfull your first orgasm? Now I’m curious!

  10. Frenchie says:

was the “soundtrack” of my first one !

  11. Ophelia says:

Oh! Ok, that sounds pretty awesome! 😛

  12. Frenchie says:

Ok, more : my boyfriend at the time put the “broken english” on. I didn’t like the music, it kind of bugged me but at some stage I was in sync with the rythm and then I came. I never listened to the album again because I wasn’t going to by it because of that. It’s the experience of one time, I guess it couldn’t be renewed.

  13. Ophelia says:

That makes sense, but Broken English is brilliant! Try it after a while, and you might like it again. I’ve had cds like that. I couldn’t listen to Pink Floyd fo forever because of the reminder. Now I totally love it.

  14. FF says:

Erm, I’m pretty sure Kate’s been quoted as wanting to emulate Faithfull, so she’s got a point.

And I agree with her (Faithfull), Kate’s an extremely canny ‘vampire’ with it. It’s no accident she’s where she is.

ps – I don’t there’s anyone Kate hasn’t been with. Especially anyone in a band.

  15. yasmin says:

Oh please. Get off your high horse ms faithfull. Everybody steals everyone’s style, nobody is original these days. Ayway, is she the only one who is allowed to go for rock stars, do drugs and like fashion? Pleeeeaaaaseee. I don’t even know who this biatch is.

Marianne needs to go see her shrink again. Kate cannot help if she looks like her which I dont think she does lol She may do all the drugs that MF did but thats about it and MF never m,ade the money that Kate has. Kate has screwed up a lot but I dont think she wants Mick roflmao..no wants to date anyone who looks like him. Drugs make you paranoid Marianne lol lay off the drugs. Kate is looking pretty haggard these days but not as bad as Marrianne

  17. lindsay says:

not trying to brag at all, but i have a husband who gets me everything i want so i always have the newest and cutest perfumes, cosmetics, clothes, shoes ect and ive had quite a few “friends” try to copy me and let me tell you, that s**t is ANNOYING so i understand where marianne is coming from. also, marianne faithfull was the epitome of a sexy swingin 60s chick and is a fashion ICON-(check out old pics of her with her thigh-high boots and miniskirts) its obvious that kate HAS emulated marianne but she is not, and will never be, in the same league. marianne was hanging out with THE ROLLING STONES! kate is nothing but an emaciated cokehead model. (who has never been particularly attractive)
