Rita Ora on the music industry: ‘It has always been harder for females’

Rita Ora

Rita Ora performed at several Jingle Balls last month. Rita’s currently promoting her new gig as a judge on The Voice UK. She’s made a big fuss about an American takeover, but she’s still concentrating on the UK. She has a new interview with The Mirror, which claims Rita has amassed a $15 million fortune. I found that unbelievable at first because Rita’s only had a handful of hit singles. But she does have a fashion line, and she’s a face of Rimmel. Rita talks about some vapid stuff here, but she also discusses how hard it is to be female in the music industry:

On hotness: “I’m not going to deny it. If someone is hot, I’m going to say they’re hot, male or female, but it doesn’t mean I am going to go somewhere. It is just paying them a compliment.”

On flirting: “I don’t know what flirting is really. Sometimes in women friendliness comes across as flirting. That is not what it is. We get accused of flirting when we’re friendly or if we laugh at a joke, and it may not be as funny as other people think. I just have fun. I am 24, I have fun and I enjoy it.”

On women in music: “Without pulling the whole female card, I think it has always been harder for females in all aspects. Whenever we have an opinion it always seems to be taken out of proportion. As a woman in this industry it has always been a bit about proving yourself, so I’m proud to be on a panel with such successful men.”

Why some people fear feminism: “I think people take the word feminist really seriously and I think people are scared to use that word. In this industry, all the heads of labels are men. But every artist has to prove themselves, regardless of their sex. I have always been very vocal about the women sticking together. That’s my opinion.”

[From The Mirror]

I think Rita has a point about it being harder for females, and those difficulties extend far beyond the music and entertainment industries. The media does treat male and female artists differently. Dudes receive far more chances for bad behavior before being written off as a mess. At the same time, I think Rita is subtly referring to a very bitter Calvin Harris smashing her upcoming album to pieces. Sexism aside, it’s not smart for anyone to tie their success to a lover because relationships do go bad. Women already have a hard enough time succeeding without adding the whims of tantrum-throwing ex-boyfriends to the mix.

She’s beautiful, and she can sing. I like her.

    • SpookySpooks says:

She looks like a blonde Jennifer Lopez in the first picture.

    • Jodie says:

I like her too. She really grew on me. I used to not like her for no particular reason, until I looked up some of her acoustic performances. I really love her voice and she has good energy. Her songs aren’t groundbreaking, but I like them better than most pop songs on the radio now.

  2. Loopy says:

Can a couple of contracts and virtually no hits to speak of really amass that much in this day and age. I have heard her music in the background and it is awful, and its just her camps spin that she is big in the UK.

    • Charlie says:

I think she had hits. I’m not sure about the UK, but she’s fairly popular in Croatia. More popular than people like Ariana or Demi Lovato.

      • Loopy says:

That just sounds alot for someone who has been around for a short time, and made more headlines because of who she dates than her music. Rihanna after all her hits and endorsements is said to ‘only’ be worth $90 million.

    • Louise177 says:

Rita does have a few hits #1 hits in the UK. It’s easy to find that info on the internet. A lot of people are big in certain countries but unknown in other places. It happens all of the time.

    • shunty says:

Loopy, I can’t find a reply link to your comment. I believe she has that money and honestly even thought she had more. And I also know she was never even poor to begin with. She never struggled.
Meanwhile rihanna is worth close to $50million. It was close to $90million and she squandered it all and had to file for bankruptcy. Remember the accountant story from 2013? It was detailed a bit. Whether Rita has $15mil or not I hope she’s investing well so she doesn’t file for bankruptcy in addition to Roc Nation making her work her butt off

      • Loopy says:

Rihanna’s financial manager is the one that squandered all her money and this was years ago, after she had a couple of hits from her third album. And she sued the company and she never actually filed for bankruptcy(link?). The reports in recent times i think are just reaching mainstream media now. Now she is worth alot more, probably more than $90 M. One thing that makes you money in this digital age is if you have the popularity of being a touring artist, she sells out stadiums. I doubt Rita Ora can do that anytime soon not even an arena at this stage.

      • shunty says:

You can Google ‘rihanna bankruptcy’ or ‘rihanna financial troubles’. Its no secret. Never was. I just dunno how to post links on my mobile. Notice how in those stories they kept alleging $11mil loss out the $ 90 mil she supposedly had while calling it bankruptcy? It’d because she actually was. There’s a reason she’s putting out stuff after stuff. Her albums don’t really sell and her singles sell more but also singles cost less. That’s one of the reasons I believe she can’t pull a Beyoncé with her new album because it won’t really be successful and there are reports that she’s also waiting for a movie she did the soundtrack for to come out in march which means double promotion. Jay needs to let this girl rest but that’s by the by. And the post last year had her (ex) accountant response to claims he squandered her money, something about ‘if you spend your money, you’ll end up with the things you buy and not the money’. Notice how that case is no longer in court? Rihanna is rich and big enough to go after someone who squandered her money if the person really did. I know all this cos I’m a fan and it piqued my interest enough back then. So yeah, it was covered a but in this site when she appeared on a certain mag cover. She indeed was bankrupt

      • qwerty says:

She “was left ‘effectively bankrupt’ at the end of 2009 ” http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2561519/Rihanna-settles-10-million-accountant-gave-bad-advice.html

It’s juts a quote. That is not the same as being bankrupt in a legal sense. She didn’t file for bankruptcy, and it was in 2009. She’s made a s**tton of money since then.

    • Charlie says:

I know she’s compared to Rihanna a lot, and in my opinion she’s a better singer, and seems much nicer too. I think Rihanna is more popular just because she mad eit in America.

It reminds me of Robbie Williams, who’s probably the biggest pop singer around, yet he also never really cracked America.

      • SpookySpooks says:

I also think she’s superior to Rihanna in every way. She also doesn’t seem like a huge asshole like Rihanna.

Ellie Goulding is also big in the UK but not in the US, and she’s cool too.

      • shunty says:

She actually is a better singer than rihanna but riri has better producers and chooses better songs from what the roc nation writers pen down and we live her for it. But groundbreaking singers they are not. Try Beyoncé on that one.

    • QQ says:

I’ve heard her say in a radio interview that initially she did a little tv and then was really frugal and also does a LOT or Real Estate investment and that she just has a good head for business… which… Good for her and All, I’m still not here for her and her distressed Tendrils and terrible clothes

    • Jodie says:

She had 4 #1 singles in the UK, so it’s not just her camp’s spin that she’s big there.

  3. Sixer says:

She must be a bit desperate to do The Voice, which has been a disaster in the UK. The BBC spent a fortune on a 4 or 5 year investment in it, so they’re dragging it out to the bitter end, but it’s mostly mocked to be honest.

    • Charlie says:

Is it bad? I haven’t watched the UK version, but I might becasue I love Ricky Wilson.

    • Sixer says:

I don’t honestly know. I’m not one for reality TV or talent shows. But I know the viewing figures are poor and it’s failed to produce a hit by any of the winners – I’m afraid I only know this from reports in the papers though.

I like Ricky, too. Proper Yorkshire!

      • Bridget says:

So like the equivalent of doing the US version of The X Factor? (Which is of course now dearly departed)

    • Otaku fairy says:

Even though I like The Voice (us version) and the way it’s set up, the one thing that sucks about it is that after 7 seasons, they’ve failed to produce a star here. I don’t know why that is- they’ve had some talented singers over the years. Cassadee Pope- who I still don’t think was one of the best singers the voice has had, but she was one of the winners- seemed to have some minor success, but she’s no Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, or One Direction. All the stars seem to come from American Idol and X factor. Also, the people I want to win never win.

  4. HH says:

Something about her rubs me the wrong way not sure what it is because I’ve never seen an interview with her. Maybe it’s her OTT fashion.

  5. Murphy says:

It seems to me like all their sucess depends on who they bang…how do they know who to bang first?

  6. Mimz says:

Its sad to see this in every Rita ora post “she has no hits” “shes famous for who she slept around with” and on that note, no one likes to remember how Rihanna, Beyonce, and many other celebrities banked on their (often strategic) relationships at some point and became (even bigger) superstars.

Rita is no different. just because shes not super famous in the US doesnt mean that shes not successful. America is one (big) country but the rest of the world has its own superstars, and people like her are making a LOT of money in europe and other corners of the world. I also happen to think she has a good voice, and i think shes a hustler.

At least people are not saying again “who is she?”, so i guess we’re slowly improving?

    • Nikki says:

When have Rihanna or Beyoncé ever used their relationship to get ahead?

Rihanna’s only know relationships are with Chris B., Drake, and Matt Kemp. The latter two didn’t happened until after ’09 and her relationship with Chris started around ’07-’08, by then already having a #2 hit on Billboard Hot 100 (I.e. Pon De Replay) and #1 hit with SOS. She was known, not as huge as she is now but she had well known hits, and they were a genuine couple.

Now Beyonce’s ONLY public relationship has been with Jay-Z, and for most of it they kept it very low key. The two were so private that people didn’t even know they got married until days and days after (this was no Clooney stuff).

Neither used relationships to boost their fame, not to mention they had their own hits prior or during the relationship. I get what you’re saying about Rita but Bey and Ri are bad examples. Britney and JT, that Gomez girl with JB or Taylor Swift are prime examples of singers who used relationships for publicity.

      • Mimz says:

Yes I know I’m big fan of both of them but we’ve all seen how Rihanna banked on the aftermath of that unfortunate, horrid attack. Her label and herself used this as a marketing tool to upgrade her to superstardom. It’s unfortunate and it’s sad but there are many articles around stating this, she was getting big but that really boosted her career. Beyoncé is a self-made artist yes but her high-profile relationship – to this day – even through “secrecy” makes a lot of money, even if her strategy was better than most. Because yes, i am a huge fan of bey but she has an insane marketing machine.
But anyway I know you got what I was saying, just wanted to explain my POV. Many artists, singers and actors alike use relationships to boost their careers. Rita dated (among others) a DJ. Actors and actresses marry directors or have affairs with their agents. it’s a dirty dirty world.

  7. Veronica says:

I hate her fashion sense, but she seems to have a good head on her shoulders. High five on the part about how men interpret flirting. Sometimes, I’m just smiling at you to be polite, not as an invitation to sit your ass down and talk to me.

I do, however, agree with her about the challenges out there for female artists. Something that tends to really stick out to me is how female pop stars tend to fill “niches” rather than be individual presences in music. Rihanna is the bad girl who gives no f*cks. Taylor is the sweet, classy, all American girl. Miley is the crazy party girl. Keisha was the trashy, hot mess. It goes back to my theory on media portrayals, where white men are the only ones allowed to truly be people.
