Anne Hathaway’s Oscar-hosting advice: ‘Do the opposite of what I did’

wenn22043191

Here are some photos of Anne Hathaway going into Jimmy Kimmel’s studio a few days ago. She appeared on his show on Monday night. I couldn’t even force myself to watch the video, so go here if you want to see. Apparently, she told a long-winded story about gagging over some “chardonnog.” Blah. Annie’s making the rounds because she’s promoting Song One, a film she stars in and produced. She actually coproduced it with her jewelry-designing husband Adam Shulman. In addition to doing Kimmel, she also gave an interesting interview to the New York Times. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

On coproducing with Adam: “We felt pretty good at the end of it. It was humbling, because I thought I knew a lot more about making movies than I did.”

Advice for Neil Patrick Harris for hosting the Oscars: “Do the opposite of what I did, and you’ll be fine.”

When asked what went wrong when she co-hosted the Oscars: “I think it’s so obvious that it doesn’t even need to be identified. He’ll be great. He’s a natural host.”

The end product of all of the Hathahate after she won her Oscar: “Self-acceptance. If you’re not someone who has a natural and effortless love for yourself, it’s hard to let go of your desire to please other people, and that’s really not an ingredient for a happy life.”

What was behind all the vitriol? “Oh, I think you can’t answer that and be a self-respecting person.”

If her email was hacked, what would it say about her? “That I’m a very private person. I don’t reveal much in email. I’ve just had to be aware, for a very long time, that it is not an airtight form of communication.”

Is she surprised about the lack of email security? “No. I think it’s good that we don’t sit around expecting the worst to happen.”

Her New Year’s resolutions: “I have one, but I don’t want to mention it because it’s scaring me. And it has nothing to do with pregnancy. But it’s not because of a problem. It’s just because why not: I’m going to really prioritize my health this year and not drink, at least not in January. I want to take a month off.

Whether she’s still a smoker: “I’ve quit. I got hooked for a few years. I had a four-year break, and then actually when I was producing “Song One,” I started smoking again. It’s easy to romanticize it when you haven’t done it in a while, but it’s actually pretty disgusting.

Her thoughts on vaping: “I don’t judge the vape. I know some people who used to be three-pack-a-day smokers, and I’d much prefer them having the vape. I don’t want to give them any excuse not to vape.”

[From The New York Times]

If you have the time, I’d suggest going to the read the full NYT piece, and if you do, come back here and tell me if you think Annie came across as somewhat chilly. Maybe something was lost in transcribing the quotes, but it seemed like Annie went cold a few times, like she was aiming for self-deprecating about hosting the Oscars but then it just turned dark and uncomfortable when the NYT interviewer wasn’t like, “Oh no, you were fine!” Or “People really didn’t hate you that much, it was all in your head!” To be fair to old-school Annie, I never blamed her for the Oscar hosting debacle. James Franco got high and forgot to prepare and Annie tried to be a professional and save the night. As for the smoking stuff… I don’t judge the vape either. It bugs me when people complain about the vape.

PS… Her hair is looking particularly cute these days.

When asked what went wrong when she co-hosted the Oscars: “I think it’s so obvious that it doesn’t even need to be identified…”, right, James?

    • Kitten says:

Ha ha..totally what she was saying right there.

    • Mmhmm says:

Lol. I actually really really like Anne. I’ve always liked many of her movies, and she’s never really annoyed me as an actress. Sure the Hathahate and oscar stuff got on my nerves, but I honestly don’t know how I would have acted under all of the scrutiny and spotlight. I think she’s just fine now :). And I loved her in interstellar!

    • lucy2 says:

Yeah, he was awful and dragged the whole thing down, and she, feeling like she had to make up for him being half asleep up there, began to come across as over eager. I think the blame on that one is squarely on Franco.

  2. Esmom says:

I think she looks great in this photo, she’s managing to grow out her hair most gracefully. As for her comments, I though she was funny with the Oscar hosting line of questioning and I can see why she was all over the board with her tone and mood…the line of questioning took a pretty dark turn, imo. It would be really hard to speculate with an interviewer why people hate/d her so much, wouldn’t it? I didn’t read the whole thing but I think she did a decent job with the interview.

    • Kitten says:

      She’s really pretty right?

My boyfriend thinks she’s really….not pretty.

      I don’t get it.

Then again, J Law is his Number One and she’s nothing beautiful to me. Pretty for sure, but not beautiful.

Also, I agree with your assessment of the interview. I don’t know…I guess I’m biased because I admire her acting, but I never understood all the hate she gets. Sure, her Oscar campaigning was annoying, but not anymore annoying that other celebs IMO.

      • Splinter says:

I belong to the “not too pretty” camp. For me it’s the eyes – they’re tilted down. But she has good makeup and can look good.

      • Charlie says:

I’m with you, Kitten. I find Anne much much prettier than JLaw.
I also LOVE her. Even her campaign couldn’t kill my love.

“If you’re not someone who has a natural and effortless love for yourself, it’s hard to let go of your desire to please other people” – also, I can relate to this so much.

    • Mmhmm says:

Agreed. Plus stuff could seem different tones in writing than when said in person…especially once you consider editing.

    • Shambles says:

Agreed @EsoMom. I would probably come off pretty distant and cold too if someone basically said to me, “So, why do people hate you so much?” Yes, she was a little grating at times. But she’s perfectly allowed to rise above it and have moments when she’s witty, likeable and cool. She doesn’t always have to be “annoying Anne” and I find it kind of rude and distasteful of the interviewer to make that the main focus of their time together.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I find her very pretty, though i like her hair this length or longer. I didn’t like the Les Mis length. I thought she handled herself well. I was really tired of her for awhile, but I feel really bad that things got as ugly as they did. It must have hurt her very much, and I can see how she would be very, very tired of talking about it. I think everyone ( especially interviewers) should move on.

  3. Kiddo says:

Hmm, I actually thought she handled it (the NYT article questions) well.

*inside my head: Wait, did I just say that?*

  4. Tateru says:

At least she’s not going into the Hathahate questions with any detail. She was making it worse last year.
ETA Here’s my “Say something nice about Anne” I would like to have her lips.

  5. MissBB says:

    Really like her hair!

  6. Ginger says:

At least she’s not spewing BS or thoughtless comments like some folks have been doing lately (side eye JA) As for the hosting gig, I thought she was great and Franco brought her down. I think she was probably very careful and calculated about her interview here because she wants the focus to be on her project which is actually very smart. Maybe she’s learned since the Oscar over saturation? I really do like her hair grown out to that bob length. It’s very flattering. As for vaping, I’m an ex smoker as well and sometimes I miss the habit but she’s right it is disgusting. And even though vapor cigs still contain Nicotine they aren’t smelly. I guess if you are going to continue the habit it’s a little bit less gross. But isn’t it even more expensive than regular smokes? I saw the price of a pack recently and was glad I don’t smoke anymore.

  7. Sarah says:

I had to look up “vape.” No clue. A positive – her hair looks great.

  8. Farah says:

Anne was never the problem. It was all Franco. She actually tried to be profession and do a good job.

  9. Shannon1972 says:

I like her. I can’t help it…I never got the Hathahate.

I think she navigated the minefield of those questions quite well. They seemed deliberately designed to get a rise out of her, and I don’t blame her if she went a bit cold. Really, who could muse gracefully on why people hate them?

  10. Rhiley says:

The Dryuary thing is pretty popular to do so I hope she isn’t too intimidated by it. I was a pretty good beer and wine drinker there for a while there. A couple of bottles of wine and a few beers a week were pretty standard for me. But then around August I decided I was kind of tired of it and thought I will not buy alcohol for one week. I just kind of kept going with it and now I haven’t bought, or drank, alcohol at all since then. Now with the holidays, and my friends knowing me, I got loads of wine and fancy beer for Christmas gifts. But I have kept to ginger ale and put all the bottles in a cabinet. They are there but I haven’t been tempted, and I am just going to keep at it. I kind of love waking up without a dull headache on Saturdays.

    • Esmom says:

The same thing happened to me. I’d occasionally give booze up for a month and a few years ago I planned to go the same thing and now it’s three and a half years later — except for one celebratory margarita last summer at a party that I decided to drink when the host handed it to me, and which gave me an instant hangover.

I just seem to have lost my desire for it. And I lost some weight too, I came to realize that I ate more when I drank regularly and now I eat smaller portions and don’t get the calories from beer or wine.

  11. scout says:

It must feel bad when you screw up something when people expected fabulous and funny hosting, specially from a Oscar winning actress. I can understand the guilt she must be feeling even now. That means she has a conscience, unlike most Hollywood stars!!
Hair style, yeah, I dig that too, beautiful shade of color as well.

  12. Anne says:

Frumpy mom hair. And those wrinkles are shocking for someone her age.

    • Anony says:

What! She’s not that wrinkly! SHe looks normal to me and i’m in the same age range. I think people are too used to the over-botoxed look they don’t know normal anymore…

  13. Mia4S says:

    Very honest and well handled.

While James Franco replied “I’ve done an eight-part, neo-realist, 3-D documentary in iambic pentameter which explains why my hosting choices were consistent with the philosophies of Aristotle and will save the rain forest.

And then someone hopefully punched him.

    • Kiddo says:

THE FRANCO is living, breathing, thoughtful poetry and a driver of world events. THE END.

      • Mia4S says:

So true! How dare I not fully capitalize his name. I shall write an opera in Greek (which I do not speak) in penance! 😉

  14. HoustonGrl says:

She’s right about the self-love bit. There is a healthy amount of collegiality and respect that needs to exist at home and in the work place, but you definitely can’t live to please.

    • Kiddo says:

My only quibble is with the ‘effortless’ part, it smells like Antebellum Allure Spirit.

  15. Jayna says:

I didn’t think she was bad on the Oscars. Franco, on the other hand, was a too-cool, flat, high host, who didn’t seem to even try. She tried to make up for it, but could only do so much.

I like Anne and glad to see she’s growing her hair out. She was so striking with a lot of her dark hair against her porcelain skin. The short got old.

    • OhDear says:

Same here. She may have overcompensated for Franco a bit, but she was being professional and was trying to make an effort to salvage the thing.

  16. mo says:

I’d blame Franco but i didn’t like her too. She looked so eager to be liked and annoying oh wait, that’s exactly who she is.

    • Esmom says:

I don’t know. I’m not a fan of hers but that show was a debacle and I can’t imagine the panic/rage she was going through. He really threw her under the bus and I can’t imagine many people handling it much better.

    • perplexed says:

I think she had to make up for his performance, and may have overcompensated.

If she had hosted with Hugh Jackman, she probably would have come across fine.

  17. lucy2 says:

She’s been picked on for 2 years now, and is asked, to her face, why people hated her so much – is it surprising if she comes off a little cold in the interview!?

    • Tiffany says:

Yes. You would think that she was drunk and ran over a bunch of puppies with the vitriol that she receives. She was just overeager. That’s it.

    • Emily C. says:

Seriously. Do people ever bring up Franco’s abysmal performance there to him? No, they don’t even bring up that he got a professor fired for criticizing him or that he tried to seduce a 17-year old girl.

Anne’s crimes? She comes across as annoying and over-eager sometimes. And she’s been criticized relentlessly for that for at least 2 years. Meanwhile people can’t scramble hard enough to bow down to Franco, and to other men who have done far worse.

  18. INeedANap says:

I think it was correct of her to “go chilly” when she got asked those bombs. There is no way to respond to those questions without sounding like a narcissist, so she simply — politely — refused. Good for her. Better this than forcing them to not ask her.

  19. kri says:

Her hair looks great and it was really all Franco’s fault. Otherwise, I’m meh on her.

  20. I Choose Me says:

I don’t take issues with her answers here. She sounds measured, which is not a bad thing.

Also I’m loving her hair this length and her legs look really great.

  21. Carolina says:

    what happened at the Oscars?

  22. tarheel says:

Anne actually did a decent job. Not Ellen or Conan, but she was fine. Franco was the dud.
