Tom Hardy drops out of ‘Suicide Squad’, might be replaced by Jake Gyllenhaal?

Remember last summer when we had, like, new photos of Tom Hardy every day? I miss that time. Anyway, Tom Hardy is one of Hollywood’s go-to guys these days. Pretty much any role that requires a white guy, aged 25-45, Tom Hardy is mentioned for the part. That’s not really a problem, because every film is better with some Hardy. But Tom does seem to have a minor problem: I don’t always think he has the best taste in scripts. I understand why he signs on to so many diverse roles, but he’s at a place in his career where he could afford to be a bit more choosey. One of the films I was not looking forward to (at all) was Suicide Squad, yet another comic-book movie. Tom had signed on to play Rick Flagg, the leader of a rag-tag group of villains. His casting was confirmed last month. And now… no more.

Tom Hardy has dropped out of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros.’ all-star comic book movie being directed by David Ayer. Not losing a beat, the studio has made overtures to Jake Gyllenhaal, who has generated heat for his performance in Nightcrawer, to replace Hardy .

Based on DC Entertainment’s villains-forced-to-be-heroes characters, the cast boasts a nefarious lineup that includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, along with Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne. Hardy was to have played Rick Flagg, the leader of the group that consists of Batman villains Deadshot (Smith), Joker (Leto) and Harley Quinn (Robbie), plus Boomerang (Courtney) and Enchantress (Delevingne).

Hardy’s exit is due to scheduling, according to sources. The actor is currently shooting The Revenant, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s frontier drama that also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, and that shoot is now looking to go longer than initially planned.

Hardy is also starring in Mad Max: Fury Road for Warners, which opens May 15, smack in the middle of Suicide filming. Suicide is due to begin shooting mid-April in Toronto, but Hardy will have press commitments for Fury Road that will take him around the world.

Gyllenhaal has an offer to replace Hardy but it’s unclear whether or not the actor will take it on. Gyllenhaal, who worked with Ayer on the acclaimed police thriller End of Watch, is currently on Broadway for his play Constellations. The play runs until mid-March. It’s unknown whether that gives the actor enough prep time or down time for a prolonged shoot. Suicide has an Aug. 5, 2016, release date.

Now that I see the explanation, I think it probably was just a scheduling conflict and not Hardy rethinking his future projects and realizing he probably shouldn’t do another comic-book type film. And to the casting director who honestly thinks that Jake Gyllenhaal is a suitable replacement for Tom Hardy: HAHAHAHA. No disrespect to those of you who enjoy the Gyllenhaal, but no. Tom Hardy is sex on a stick. Jake Gyllenhaal is vanilla pudding. Tom Hardy could get you pregnant just by looking at you. Jake Gyllenhaal would ask to borrow your hair product.

    Nightcrawer?

    😉

I want Tom Hardy to get me pregnant just by looking at me.

Well. After he looks at me, things can take their natural course and THAT probably would be where/how the conception occurs, but yes. Tom Hardy. Le sigh…

    • Lol, I read the first part of your comment and was all—“If THAT’S what you want, Frida_K…I’ll happily get pregnant the natural way, lol”

Now let me go hide in a corner from O’Kitten. If she finds out I’ve been eyeballing her Bloke, then she might not share the good “stuff” with me later on…..

tbh, regardless of whether you fancy jake g or not which is of course down to taste, he’s a far superior actor than hardy. I never understand what how attractive/sexy an actor is, has to do with how good he is at doing his job or watchable on screen *smh*

btw, I had high hopes for this movie until will smith joined the cast. that’s one actor who really is poison to everything he’s in, I never ever watched one of his films and liked it.

    • LB says:

Jake is definitely the better actor.

For some reason though I don’t know if I see him doing a movie like this. I know he desperately wanted to be in Spiderman during the Toby years but his career veered another way. On the other hand, I feel like everyone wants to do a comic book movie lately since those are the ones that get the largest audience now. Plus it’s an ensemble.

      • It is what it is says:

        +1 LB.

Also I find Jake way hotter than steroidy Hardy. Jake has the cutest self deprecating grin!

  3. Crocuta says:

Gyllenhaal is the better actor, tho. Which should count for something …

I find neither of them attractive.

Edit: Ell was faster than me, hehe 🙂

    • Sophie says:

Sorry, but Gyllenhaal isn’t the better actor. Tom definitely is! he’s much more versatile. I love the man; a true artist he is.

  4. Valois says:

Would Jake really aim for a blockbuster again? i always thought he repositioned himself after that horrible Prince of Persia.

    • ell says:

he already worked with SS’ director in “end of watch”. also it would be quite different because he would be one of many in an ensemble, as opposed to carry the whole thing like in prince of persia (which was awful btw).

    • anon says:

But he was great in the Prince of Persia movie. I have no problem seeing him doing comics because of that movie. Thought, the movie itself was meh!
Jake might not want to do comics , though.

      • ell says:

yes, there was nothing wrong with his acting in pop, he’s always good. but the film was appalling.

i’m ambivalent about this film, on one side it would be nice on the other I think he could hold on and get a better role with marvel… this role he’s been offered now isn’t really all that interesting. I’m sure he would want to do comics, as long as it’s a good role.

  5. EC says:

To me, Jake is The Sex. I think both of them elevate this cast, but I agree Tom H doesn’t need more action/comic book movies. Unless he wants them, in which case God bless.

  6. Lilacflowers says:

The Bloke! The Bloke! It’s a Bloke Friday! Comet Sophies for everyone! Colin will deliver yours momentarily.

  7. NewWester says:

“Jake Gyllenhaal would ask to borrow your hair product ” Burn!!! Lol

  8. A.Key says:

Sorry, I think JG is loads better looking than Hardy. Then again I’ve never been into Hardy, hated him since his girly turn as Heathcliff.

  9. kri says:

I love the Hardy boy. So hot. Not to mention talented beyond. It would have been interesting to see him in SSquad, but then again I would watch him eating oatmeal. Don’t see JG in this role, but then again there is that Joker factor.

  10. Nk868 says:

The pictures chosen for contrast deserve a round of applause. Tom hardy is on my forever dong list. Can we get more pics of him with that puppy again? Sigh

  11. 'P'enny says:

Thank the world for Tom Hardy dropping out of the comic book sphere, enough of our really good Brit actors being souped into these films. Stay away me lovely. Mind you isn’t Mad Max a comic book? or was it just Tina Turner that turned the films into one? #confused

  12. lizzie says:

i would feel very very ripped off if i got pregnant by tom hardy and he had only looked at me. what a sad day that would be.

  13. Amy Tennant says:

I’ve come around to the Bloke. He’s not my usual type, but he’s won me over. I love his lips!

  14. InvaderTak says:

Well in out. No Bloke no watch.

  15. Ginger says:

( “No disrespect to those of you who enjoy the Gyllenhaal, but no. Tom Hardy is sex on a stick. Jake Gyllenhaal is vanilla pudding. Tom Hardy could get you pregnant just by looking at you. Jake Gyllenhaal would ask to borrow your hair product.”) THIS! I’m dying. Thanks for the laugh!!

  16. Josefa says:

I guess I’m really alone here. I’m actually really loving the superhero craze as a big fan of comic books, and Tom Hardy does nothing to me. He doesn’t destroy the movies he’s in, but he doesn’t elevate them either. And I don’t get why ya’ll find him so insanely handsome – I think he’s just an average looking guy with a nice body.

Jake is too pretty for my taste, but he’s definitely the better actor out of the 2 and I have yet to see him not deliver in a movie.

    • anon says:

Same here. I can see his appeal, but he does nothing for me. Not my cup of tea.
I far prefer Jake. After all, they are actors , they should be able to play whatever it is they need. It has nothing to do with what Jake and Tom are like in real life. It actually makes it more interesting.

    • Clair says:

Well darling, i think we have a different taste in men. Tom IS special as f#ck as a human being and as an actor. Until now he always did elevate the movie he was in, according all the great, raving reviews!

  17. Amanda says:

Good looking man, even when he scrunched up his face like in the cover photo.

  18. Isabelle says:

Can understand why he dropped out. Jake has been giving great performances lately, so he’s a good replacement. He should have been nominated for Nightcrawler, that was one of the biggest academy thumb in the eye this year.

  19. amberj says:

Lainey’s got a blind about Tom cheating on Charlotte…again.
