Levi Johnston confirms: split with Bristol Palin happened ‘a while ago’

It seems like Star Magazine actually had a good scoop yesterday. They reported that Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston had officially broken up, and that Bristol wouldn’t allow Levi to spend any time with their baby Tripp.

Wednesday evening, Levi confirmed the break-up news himself, as he stood outside of his family’s home. Levi claimed that the decision to split was “mutual” and that they decided it “a while ago”. Uh, the baby was just born at the end of December. How long “a while” ago did they decide to split? Like two seconds after giving birth? People has more:

Levi Johnston doesn’t want you to believe everything you read.

Standing outside his family home in Wasilla, Alaska, Wednesday, the 19-year-old confirmed that the end of his engagement to Bristol Palin was mutual and decided “a while ago.” But, he also told the Associated Press that the rumors on the Internet of why and how were inaccurate.

Meanwhile, Palin, the 18-year-old daughter of Gov. Sarah Palin, issued a statement through her mother’s political action committee, saying, “Unfortunately, my family has seen many people say and do many things to ‘cash in’ on the Palin name. Sometimes that greed clouds good judgment and the truth.”

The teenagers’ infant son, Tripp, was born Dec. 27.

Representatives for Gov. Palin have not returned calls for comment.

From People Magazine

Like yesterday’s report from Star, this “confirmation” by Levi is still only coming from him and his family. It would be really interesting to hear what Bristol had to say about it.

Last night on Coutdown, Keith Olbermann made some “Bristol is an unwed mother” jokes that I thought were a little cruel. Yes, Bristol’s mother is a hypocrite, and the Republican Party used Bristol and Levi to further their own agenda. The joke’s on the adults, not on these dumb kids Bristol and Levi and their baby Tripp.

I always figured they had broken up long before anyone even knew Bristol was pregnant – they never really seemed all that comfortable together when they were trotted out for the cameras like the happy couple.

  2. bros says:

she confirmed it with greta sustren last night-just saw a clip this morning. its not just the levi camp. what a trashy picture on alaska’s political system. shame on sarah for making the governorship of a state look like the maury show with all this baby momma drama gossip mag crap and her pregnant unwed teen.

  3. Lem says:

wait: what did Bristol’s statement say?
    what did Levi say?
what was Keith Olbermann’s statement about Bristol in a rear window or rear view? I didn’t get it

  4. bros says:

nevermind-i wasnt watching the tv when it played this morning-that must have been an old interview.

  5. Sarah says:

“Yes, Bristol’s mother is a hypocrite”

How is Sarah Palin a hypocrite regarding this? She was not the one who got pregnant out of wedlock. Yeah, her daughter did, but how many parents have been dismayed when their kids don’t go along with their parents’ beliefs or whatever? I don’t think that makes the parent a hypocrite. They still believe what they believe, even if their children don’t go along with it. I am not a big Palin fan, but when someone’s kid screws up despite what their parent tried to teach them, it doesn’t make the parent a hypocrite. It’s painful for the parents, but they still love their children and will support them after the mistake has been made.

Keith Olbermann is such a jerk; but this is a media community and society that will crucify Miley Cyrus, a 16-year-old kid, for mistakes and dumb things she says. Being famous, no matter age, means you’re open for all who want to take a shot.

  6. Ling says:

Until now, I had NO IDEA that baby Tripp and I shared a birthday!!!!!!!!!!

(I apologize for all the exclamation points… rest assured, they are accurate, given the mega-decibel *gasp* NOOOOOO! I let loose upon reading that little factoid.)

  7. Kaiser says:

Lem: so far, only the Johnston family is actually talking about the break-up. That’s why I said it would be interesting to hear Bristol’s side, rather than some vague denial-ish things.

And the Olbermann jokes were just the standard stuff: “Oh, she’s an unwed mother, what does that say about the GOP, blah, blah.” I changed the channel.

  8. pixiegirl says:

I actually feel bad for Bristol. She seems like a fairly nice person who made a mistake. It happens. Her mom, on the other hand….

  9. geronimo says:

So was this entire story that they were engaged and planning on getting married nothing but PR spin from Palin’s camp while the election was going on?

  10. Wow says:

Now can they all just go away? Nothing to see there.

  11. boomchakaboom says:

The thing about politics is that if you have skeletons in the closet, they are gonna get pulled out in a very public way (see John Edwards, Gary Condit, and a dirty laundry list of many more). It would be a good idea to take a close and honest look at you and your entire family, skeletons & all, and be sure everyone is up to the overwhelming backlash that will always occur before deciding to launch them all into the public arena for the lions to devour. That’s just common sense and decency. It’s not everyone else’s “fault” if your entire family suffers the consequences of your decision to put them all into the national spotlight.

  12. Baholicious says:

Kids can’t help who their parents are.

Teenage pregnancy is practically a North American institution. Unfortunately for Bristol Palin (and baby Trig), her mother’s ambition overrode her obligation and common sense as a parent. She had two kids who really needed her to be ‘there’ you know? And she really wasn’t because she put her ‘wants’ first. That makes her a bad mother in my view.

  13. Kolby says:

Sarah – I thought I read somewhere, back when we were all just learning about Sarah Palin, that she was pregnant when she married her husband. Anyone else hear about that?

  14. sandy says:

keith olbermann is a crazy, news anchor wanna be.
doesn’t he realize he is putting down his beloved Barack Obama (who’s mother was unwed and pregnant at 16)when he rags on bristol?
And enough of people who are NOT parents themselves judging how other people parent and their kids.
until you raise a child yourself, STFU!

  15. Tia says:

Keith Olbermann is AWESOME Sarah, are you crazy?????? trust me he has a million more fans than pathetic, animal shooting, backwards, ice age thinking Sarah “dumbass” Palin.. get with 2009 already !! Less educated people liked Sarah Palin, that is what is so funny about it all… makes sense.. LOL

  16. nanster says:

Kolby – yes, Sarah Palin was pregnant with her son, Track, when she married Todd Palin.

Geronimo – I think you’re right about the whole engagement/marriage thing being a sham for the good of the campaign.

  17. Lem says:

Best I can figure he was quoting:
Over two decades ago, long-time NY-area sportscaster Sal Marchiano
closed his final SportsCenter by saying “Happiness is Seeing Bristol in
    Your Rear View Mirror”.
Missed the earlier stuff. I only saw the last minute before Rachel Maddow.
he seemed to be saying the teens must be glad Palin lost her bid and they won’t be forced to marry.

I absolutely cannot find Bristol’s statement to the AP. All I can find is “devastated” and the quote you have above. That’s not a statement. People really over-use devastated!

  18. sandy says:

keith o. is a crazy, news anchor wanna be.
doesn’t he realize he is putting down his beloved president (who’s mother was unwed and pregnant at 16) when he rags on bristol?
and enough of people who are not parents themselves judging how other people parent and their kids.
until you raise a child yourself, stfu.

  19. sandy says:

ooops, sorry kaiser, i was in moderation so long -thought i was in the spam folder
tia, having fans doesn’t make you a qualified person to judge how other people raise their children. get with 2009 and think for yourself. don’t think whatever keith o. tells you is fact.
wow, the schools are really showing their failure when i read the comments of the next generation- what a shame

  20. Bodhi says:

Geronimo~ It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if it was all a big sham

  21. cc says:

You mean these two teenagers weren’t going to spend the rest of their lives together??? Shocking!!! (roll of the eyes)…big deal as long as the child is raised with love who cares if these tweens break up?

And Sarah, you’re RIGHT ON…decisions of a 17 year old teenager does not mean the parents were hypocrites, just naive to think that teens aren’t having sex.

And Sarah Palin actually WED Todd and is STILL married to him so I don’t think it’s a valid comparison between her and her daughter.

  22. mel says:

Are we surprised that Bristol and her beau are no longer together? No, and she shouldnt be forced to marry if she doesnt love the guy. I happy that she recognized he was not the one. She’s got alittle more brains, maybe her momma can learn something from her teenage daughter.

  23. Sarah says:

Tia, LOL, I really can’t stand Keith Olbermann, but I know some people love him. Everything that comes out of his mouth makes me cringe.

I don’t know anything about Sarah Palin’s situation when she got married; I was only referring to the fact that she can’t be called a hypocrite for something her daughter did.
And really, even if she was pregnant when she got married, she can still be an advocate for abstinence in her adult years. She just needs to be upfront about her own situation.

I don’t know why I’m defending SP since I don’t really like her, but she is such an easy target for the media that I get tired of reading criticism about her. Especially if it seems unwarranted.

  24. Jane says:

A lot of us manage to not get pregnant as a teen. I have no sympathy for her.

  25. boxer says:

open message to levi: levi, if you need a place to live, look me up. you’re 10 kinds of hot.

  26. Chiara says:

This would not be an issue if Sarah Palin had simply remained quiet instead of becoming the self-appointed voice of, “family morality and values.”

  27. lele says:

Hi “sarah”, the reason why Palin is a hypocrite regarding this situation is because she has worked tirelessly to get keep sex education out of Alaska’s schools. She has also worked tirelessly to make certain that teen mother’s do not receive financial assistance or medical assistance from the Alaskan government. So she has taken away the education to prevent teen pregnancy AND has taken away the government’s safety net to prevent a cycle of poverty/abuse/dropping out of school etc. for teen parents.

Instead of letting Bristol flounder like she would any other unwed mother in Alaska, she paraded how wonderful a baby and engagement was…

  28. Emma G says:

Sarah, she is a hypocrite for parading her daughter on TV and misleading the public into believing her daughter was engaged. She uses the media until she doesn’t like what they say, then rants about the media twisting things around, being “sexist”, printing “lies” and taking advantage of “the Palin name.” Sarah Palin is TWICE as bad as ANY media source at misleading the public.

(I don’t count Fox “News” because they are not in any way a news source. If I did, they would be the worst by a mile!)

  29. bittercup says:

Maybe Bristol will change her name four times, have two failed marriages and drag Trip to foreign countries and send him back to the USA when her love life becomes to all-consuming to raise a child! Then her baby can be President- just like Malibu Barack!

  30. nicaw says:

I think the biggest mistake was saying they were going to get married in the first place. My guess is that wasn’t their intention but when the RNC came a callin’ they had to pretty the picture.

I think it became too much. It started out with two kids, getting busy and getting pregnant. Add her mother the Governor, then her mother the Presidential VP candidate, then her mother the butt of jokes (often rightfully so), the RNC’s lack of vetting, and the clothes scandal, it was too much. Not to mention Levi’s mother being arrested (no one has mentioned that). The only way they would have been able to make it work is if they really truly loved each other and could move away from Alaska.

  31. eternalcanadian says:

i always knew bristol and levi wouldn’t get married. however for bristol to keep the baby away from levi is wrong. levi should be allowed to be involved in his son’s life so bristol needs to grow up a bit more and stop acting like some petulant teenager that got dumped by her hockey player boyfriend and realize there’s a baby involved and she’ll have to maintain a somewhat cordial relationship with levi for the rest of her life. talk about a lesson learned, yeah?

  32. B . Stew says:

I find this whole thing ironic and hysterical. Folks telling everyone “leave them alone about their daughter” NO WAY!

As a Gay citizen of this country, the Republican Party has been IN MY BEDROOM for over 20 years telling me about their “morals!” LOL! They deserve this!

BTW=If this had been Obama’s daughter??? GAME OVER! The Repulicans would have never let up!!!!! LOL!

Just remember, when a group sends out hate in the form of “morals,”(be that they are personal/religious/or social) be careful because… WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND! LOL!

  33. Michele says:

I feel bad for poor Bristol. She was taken advantage of and used as a pawn during her pregnancy to further her mother’s agenda (which I am still indescribably thankful she lost). Not too long ago Bristol herself was quoted as saying she supports sex education programs as opposed to abstinence-only programs- if only her mother could wise up as much.

  34. Bri says:

Sarah, just from reading your comments, I have concluded that you’re an idiot.

Just wanted to point that out to you. Good day.

  35. Mizz Thang says:

Sandy is incorrect: Obama’s mother was 18 when O was born–an adult, just like Sarah.

  36. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

That was such a sham during the campaign with all the marriage talk. I highly doubt they were EVER going to get married. I doubted it then, too.

Who cares, I just want this whole trashy family to go away already.

  37. Sarah says:

Thanks Bri, your opinion is really important to me! haha.

  38. Toonces says:

    Levi:
Get a paternity test before you pay a dime in child support. Those Palin girls get around, if you know what I mean.

  39. Junglecat says:

To “bittercup” if only it were that simple.

You see, President Barack Hussein Obama was born with a superior intellect, which was nutured by his intellectually curious mother. I seriously doubt any child produced by the intellectually deficient and incurious Palin clan will ever be comparable to President Barack Hussein Obama.

Hope you have a lovely afternoon.

BRISTOL PALIN LOOKS LIKE AN UGLY ASHLEY TIZDALE WITH HER MESSED UP NOSE

  41. boomchakaboom says:

Hey bittercup; if Bristol and/or her mom do as good a job raising Tripp as Obamas mother figures did, then hell yeah, the kid could definitely be in the running for President of the USA. No problem there. He may even win, which again, no problem.

  42. becca says:

To the poster awhile back: I read something that gave me the impression Sarah and her husband essentially had a shotgun wedding around the time their eldest (Track) was born.

You know what I think? I think Bristol and Levi split up shortly after the election. The statement that they plan to marry was completely for the GOP’s benefit.

Levi’s an a**, but I feel bad for him because he was used as a pawn in the GOP machine and the ambitions of that snake of a woman poor Bristol calls her mother.

This whole class thing that’s brought up with these families is really sad. A person can come from a typical “white-trash” background, but they don’t have to give into that image. A teen from Alaska can be just as smart as a kid with two Harvard grads as parents. It’s all about willpower.

  43. bittercup says:

Junglecat: y afternoon was lovely, thanks!

But you know the Debtor-in-Chef was mommy curious about- and it was in between the legs of the men who led her by the nose.

Dream on. Clinton, Obama…the list of democrat presidents raised by floozies is just getting longer…

Geeze bittercup! There was absolutely no need to take your name to heart!

Why the hate on Obama’s mom?
It’s as ugly and ridiculous as all the hate comments directed at Bristol who’s not responsible gor her mother’s actions. In fact it may be worse. Try to avoid speaking ill of the deceased especially when they did do well to raise a responsible child.

  46. Leo P says:

“BTW=If this had been Obama’s daughter??? GAME OVER! The Repulicans would have never let up!!!!! LOL!”

    Damn straight!

  47. Red Rooster says:

    44. Daisy — America has always been known for quantity over quality. Your numbers prove that and the fact that you think they’re true. You probably judge movies on box office receipts, too. Or else, you just work for Fox.

  48. the original kate says:

i think their “engagement” was over as soon as palin & mc cain lost the race.

  49. Jill says:

bittercup– Obama is the “debtor-in-chief” for the insane deficit our last president ran up. Thanks Republicans!

  50. the devil says:

Keith Olberman was taking a shot at the dimwit palin, not the daughter when he kept refering to her as “an unwed mother”.

    why?

because sarah palin is a hypocrite — it’s not ok for everyone else, but it’s perfectly fine for HER family.

    and on that note:

today the dimwit palin GLADLY asked for EARMARKS (one of her campaign promises was to get rid of those “evil earmarks”).

the dimwit palin is a JOKE.

  51. Autumm Leaves says:

Oh to the posters rallying to Bristol’s defense and downing Olberman, I could give a fig about her “feelings” and that of the Republicans. They preach morality, yet are some of the most ignorant, bass ackwards thinking people I’ve ever met. They’ve been preaching about the 70% oow black kids out there, yet when BRISTOL GETS PREGNANT, we mustn’t talk about her in a negative way. Tuck hat. Seriuosly STFU. If this was Sasha Obama, we would never, ever hear the end of it.

In closing, Bristol is still a baby momma from ignorant hick parents. She’s a baby momma and she’s from a family of T R A S H.

  52. L.S. says:

Keith Olberman rules! He’s not afraid to tell it like it is. He was just calling Sarah Palin and her brood out for being hypocrites. Sarah Palin preaches about conservative values, and yet both she and her teenage daughter were having sex before marriage. Puh-lease. If Sarah Palin wanted to protect her daughter she should never have embroiled her in this mess.

  53. daisy424 says:

@Red Rooster, Not this American!! Your comment/opinion is a broad stereotype and narrow minded in my view. Dangerous slope you’re on, careful you don’t fall.

I have however seen that some Non-Americans have a preconceived notion that you ‘know’ us individually. The truth is; you don’t and you shouldn’t presume to.

No I don’t work for Fox, #’s must be irksome in a personal way with you to have struck a nerve.

Could it be that you really Keith O, the BB?

btw, your screen name LMAO!. Ironically that’s what some Americans in this part of the country call our male dogs erections.

  55. kittkatt says:

so much vitriol! i thought that Bristol’s comment to the media about abstinence being an unrealistic goal was extremely adult of her. It’s always sad when a young girl is denied the option of birth control and is then trapped in motherhood at such a young age.
that said, her mother seems absolutely horrible.

  56. Lem says:

who’s denied birth control. they sell condoms everywhere.

  57. daisy424 says:

@Lem, Years ago, my sons “informed us”
it was rocket at night, rooster in the morning! It stuck with me for some reason….

Your comment was great, thanks for the laugh!!

  58. Judy says:

Sorry folks but I doubt if Sara told her kid to go get knocked up. Sara was pg when she got married . If they wanted these kids to get married so badly then they should have had them marry before the baby was born.
They are kids, and kids having kids and getting married usually does not work. Now she is just an unwed mother and not a divorce in 2 years.
They need to finish school and go to college. At least her mother and father can afford to help raise the baby while she gets an education.
Better that they broke up now before getting married.
