Benedict Cumberbatch is not moving from London to LA: ‘Sophie is here’

wenn22160809

Back in December, when we were going full on Celebatchy, a UK paper claimed that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter had been house-hunting in LA, and they were looking to buy a rather grand eight-bedroom mansion (presumably for all of their amazing Cumberbabies). It sounded like BS, especially since Bendy is scheduled on back-to-back projects, all of which require him to be in England (probably). It’s not that I couldn’t see Benedict moving to LA, or having a home in LA, at some point in the future. It’s just that this one report seemed pretty weird. Well, at the BAFTAs, Bendy totally rejected the rumor that he’s moving to LA any time soon, telling The Independent:

“My friends are here, my family are here, Sophie is here; it doesn’t make sense to uproot my whole life… I can travel for work, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else full-time.”

[From Hollywood.com]

I think Sophie would probably move with Bendy if that’s what he really wanted, but it’s clear that he doesn’t want that, so… yeah. They’re staying in England. That’s their homebase. And it will probably keep him (relatively) sane too.

Oh, and Vanity Fair has been releasing videos of all of the stars in their The Hollywood Issue. VF keeps loading them onto YouTube, so you can see all of the videos here. Here’s one where Cumby says his first celebrity crush was Carrie Fisher/Princess Leia.

    Astoundingly long.
    Neck. She has one.

    • She always reminds me of Consuelo Vanderbilt, who was considered a great beauty.

      • hermi says:

I have seen her “live” without make up and if that’s a great beauty I’m the Queen of Sheba. She looked like a stick-thin, drowned rat who had just sucked on a lemon.

      • Maggie says:

        @ Hermi
In all honesty how can you actually write something like that about a fellow human, let alone someone of the same gender as yourself?

      • moodgirl says:

She is not attractive but it’s her nasty, filthy attitude that really brings her down.

      • Mosby says:

I think she’s beautiful from the photos I’ve seen, but still: Hermi, I really enjoy you. 🙂 lol

  2. alice says:

“My friends are here, my family are here, and oh, yeah, her too.”

    • MtnRunner says:

My thoughts exactly. At least she made the podium in his list of priorities. And he called her by name.

Hollywood has enough odd couples; let’s rejoice that London gets to keep this pair.

      • **sighs** says:

So weird. It’s not like she has a job that’s keeping her in London. At least he actually remembered her in the list though!

      • MtnRunner says:

Sighs, only London, Paris and New York for The Comet. She has high standards, y’know.

    • Granger says:

Yeah, that was weird. You’d think your pregnant fiance would get top billing in your list of reasons for living somewhere.

  3. kri says:

I cannot get over how twin-like they are. It’s uncanny. Sigh. I would never leave London for LA either.

    • Green Eyes says:

I wouldn’t leave *Boston* for LA and I am up to my Green Eyes in snow!

      • Lilacflowers says:

I’m stuck on a train going the wrong way and I wouldn’t leave either. Even Boris Johnson is staying in Boston. None of us can get out.

      • MtnRunner says:

I had be to dragged away kicking and screaming for Colorado. COLORADO!! Who doesn’t love THAT state?

Oddly, I miss the epic Nor’easters now that I live in the high desert. And Annas. And Flour. And Sligos. And The Gardner. And Wingaersheek.

        Bugger. Now I’m depressed.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Can we send Baker to LA?

      • Sixer says:

Keep Boris! He is standing in my brother’s constituency at the next election!

      • alice says:

MtnRunner My daughter lived in Leadville for 14 years. I visited there some. It took the third time before I adjusted to the height and didn’t get nauseous. You anywhere near there?

      • MtnRunner says:

alice, I’m about two hours away. I’ve only been there for the 100 miler that brings out all the crazy ultrarunners. I try and get out into the Sawatch range as often as I can. The views from the top of those 14ers are spectacular.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Sixer, we’ll keep Boris if you take Charlie.

      • Janet says:

I have in-laws in Worcester MA. They are digging out from under 7 feet of snow. More to come this weekend.

  4. Mia4S says:

There’s really no need for him to move to LA. He got an Oscar nomination and a franchise without even renting there (similar to Fassbender and Keira Knightly). LA is where you go to start up the career or try to jump start a stalled career. Stay in London Benny! Less hangers on, less TMZ, marginally less cocaine.

  5. scout says:

Live wherever you want Y’all Cumberbatches, just tell me when do I hear the wedding bells? That’s all I want to know.

  6. mazzie says:

I’m sure LA has its charms but I’d stay in London as well. (Look, I like coats, ok?)

  7. kwigh says:

HE already owns a house here in Venice–if I recall correctly that he uses when he is here. Don’t make a lot of movies here anymore so there is no need to live here unless you want too. It’s going to be 88F here today. In February.

  8. anon says:

God, I hope they split as soon as possible, she is just so unpleasant (ruins every picture she is in with him). She is nobody and she seriously doesn’t deserve any attention she is getting.

  9. Chris says:

Think Weinstein and Ben realised that he won’t win the oscar – so there’s no future work for Ben to do in Hollywood – so there’s no need for him to have a house in Hollywood. The deal is off and how to explain? So they say – ok, I like to stay in London, my friends are there … my family … and so on. That’s the way it goes …

    • Green Eyes says:

This is what I was thinking in response to his quote. Like, he’s a total nobody in LA and will forever be total nobody there so make it sound good that the reason he won’t (read: can’t) live there is because of his family/friends/andohyeahher. You just know if Hollywood were knocking on his door he would already have an address in LA by now!

    • Felice says:

That’s a little harsh. He still has a Hollywood career. He has Doctor Strange and maybe Star Wars one day.

    • j says:

LOL it was never real to begin with, just a rumor started by a tabloid and used for free advertising of a house that isn’t selling. who the hell moves from the place where all they filming for like the next few years is?

    • Maggie says:

Just check out the “Artists and Entertainers” Top 20 in this link:

      http://www.mediaquant.net/

Benedict is #1 above Swift, Rhianna and Clooney. It is not definitive by any means but with his list of projects he certainly has a very bright future in Hollywood or elsewhere. Being an Oscar nominee is prestigious and can always be added to his name even if he will, in all likelihood, not win.

And J is quite right that house rumour was just tabloid click fodder with no basis in reality. His projects for the next two years will definitely keep him in the UK; Sherlock, Hamlet and Dr Strange.

  10. Lilacflowers says:

Sophie is here, there, and everywhere

  11. H says:

Is anyone else over BC? Tired of hearing about him, as he always to be saying: “me, me, me.” Kanye and Benedict should hang.

    • InvaderTak says:

I’ll second that. I didn’t mind wall to wall coverage until he went from lizard king to whatever this is. He’s turned in to a jerk and I’m tired of it being all SH’s fault. It’s not.

      • MtnRunner says:

Or perhaps his true colors finally came through with the Oscar campaign and watching his personal life spin out of control?

      • anon says:

because every one is so pleasant when they have troubles in their life

      • MtnRunner says:

Yes, anon. Benny’s douche behavior is all Sophie’s fault since he’s the mature, functional one in the relationship. Let’s not assume he shares any blame for his present troubles. It’s so much simpler to just hate the woman who got him into this mess.

How someone acts when things aren’t going their way is the true test of their character. Anyone can be sweet and charming when everything is right in their world. I think we’re finally seeing just how immature, self-absorbed and shallow Ben is. It just took a series of big disappointments to bring it to light.

      • anon says:

No, I didn’t mean it like that. It is their fault, not only his, but since she is not the famous one, she falls out of the blaming.

      • MtnRunner says:

Sorry, I assumed you were speaking as one of the gaggle of posters here who primarily blame Sophie for his troubles and assume the absolute worst of her — even though they know almost nothing about her — unlike Ben, who has buttloads of print interviews and videos of him speaking in his own words from which a characterization that can be made. Sophie’s hardly said two hoots in comparison, but assumptions as to her motives and character. I agree that they both are at fault and have issues that have led to their current predicament.

      • kai says:

@MtnRunner: I didn’t read the last few threads on BC because of what you describe. I totally agree with you. It’s gotten better, though, I think, because people really are just getting bored. I can’t believe the Oscars still haven’t taken place.

      • Green Eyes says:

I’m not a big Sophie fan but I agree that she does get an unfair amount of criticism in regards to her relationship with Bendy – especially since we never get her side of the story. And I do sometimes pity her for having Bendy as a Significant Other. I mean, I could never stand for all his selfishness, whiny-ness and childishness. Though I do have to say that water has probably found its own level with this one.

      • Annie says:

I can see how constant coverage of any celeb could be annoying but certainly would not put him at the level of West, and he’s not impossible to avoid.

As far as him and Hunter go, they’re both responsible but they do get reduced to caricatures, with the villain depending on the poster’s opinion.

Basically, any characterization you draw from media is hollow, and people tend to forget to balance it out anyway, they either focus on positive and ignore negative or only focus on negative and ignore positive. Either method will present a skewered picture of a person you’re missing parts of to begin with.

@MtnRunner–can’t say I agree with your “true colors” at all. Cumberbatch’s had far worse down points in his career than this, and quite frankly, Mr Foot-in-Mouth isn’t compatible of getting through interviews let alone putting a somewhat elaborate act on for years.

      • MtnRunner says:

Kai, I pretty much ignore his posts by late afternoon (GMT +7) ’cause that’s when the discussions we’re describing are in full swing.

Green Eyes, yep and I suspect that your last sentence is probably spot on. Water seeks it’s own level.

Annie, what I mean is I’ve seen hints of his immaturity and narcissism in the past, but the last 6 months, it’s been front and center in my opinion. Everyone has their own filter through which they observe so I don’t expect agreement necessarily.

      • j says:

no offense, but tbh sustained stress causes a lot of behavior he’s been showing, including more drinking.

not to say he can’t be self-centered because he totally can, but no way is it totally caused only by things not going perfectly? not trying to be rude here but he’s got obvious textbook symptoms of stress overload, and that can make even a saint a total asshole if it’s not gotten under control or to manageable levels consistently

      • Annie says:

Oh yes, definitely, the filter thing is right with what I was saying, so we agree there at least 🙂

I do think J’s probably onto something up there. The fatigue, increased drinking, pronounced mood swings and dramatic aging he’s shown, along with increased nervous tics, are indicative of prolonged stress, and it can make you awful.

But I speak from experience. I’m normally a patient, not overly emotional person but was under an intense workload, and I became a short-tempered, cry-at-the-drop-of-a-hat person. It’s very strange when I think back on it now, and it was doubly weird because I’d been in a situation like that before but didn’t get as stressed about it.

As whatever is causing the most stress is removed, he should improve but it won’t be overnight.

    • Kat says:

I don’t think BC is perfect for a second, but she doesn’t need to open her mouth to display some pretty unpleasant characteristics.
Non fans have pointed out how snobby she seems and until Sunday, she’s been looking smug and self satisfied and very much in charge, whilst he’s been looking like he wants to die.
The way she looked at him on Sunday night in that audience was so full of hatred, I can’t even begin to say. You don’t look at someone you love like that.
She’s bratty, childish and spoilt, and thinks nothing of being a cow if something pisses her off, no matter the circumstances. The walking off in front of cameras at the ESAs, the nasty look to bc while she should’ve been respecting the director..the actual real director…not a pretend one..who’s on stage speaking about his much loved deceased colleagues.

      • future says:

You know, that was just how she behaves in front of the cameras (she is shy and delicate), behind the closed doors she obviously shits rainbows. Maybe she was distracted by the mention of the director since according to CNaD, she just blackmailed one. Maybe BC refused to pay her whatever she demanded. Shy, delicate and all around good person indeed.

      • Claire. says:

Ladies let’s stop believing anything on cdan. It makes us look bad. We’re mature, intelligent women discussing what’s obvious to anyone who doesn’t think BC farts rainbows, and who can call a spade a spade. Let’s not look like we’re at the salon

      • future says:

If you are willing to believe she is pregnant (with so many fallacies in being in expecting state – you have pictures of her belly coming and going and jet again reappearing among other mistakes she has made) why would you discredit another (quite questionable imo) source of information? Have you any idea how stupid believing this pregnancy exists looks like?

      • Maggie says:

“”””””””Have you any idea how stupid believing this pregnancy exists looks like?”””””””””

Using common sense, Occam’s Razor, Benedict’s own words, his representative’s words, his friend’s words and my own eyes, do you realise how stupid not believing this pregnancy makes you look?

      • Felice says:

Lol Benedict’s own words. He said he quit smoking too.

      • anon says:

lol Occam’s Razor?! Oh, Maggie, Maggie.

      • anonit says:

You may have described both of them. Who knows, they might be perfect for eachother. Other than that, I think he likes the idea of her having HIS child. Or maybe to make mum happy.

    • Anne tommy says:

But would Kim and Sophie hit it off?

      • moodgirl says:

No. They both think their royal, the room couldn’t hold the attitude.

      • Felice says:

Kim would wonder why no one styled hair and then forget who she is 10 minutes later.

Kim has been to a few events where BC was present but I doubt she knows who he is.

      • moodgirl says:

Sophie would be screaming for lip gloss before screaming at Benedict.

  12. Miran says:

I wouldn’t pick LA over London either.

  13. lindy79 says:

London > LA if you ask me.
He doesnt mention wanting to raise his kids in England or keep the family close or anything. I, I, MY FRIENDS, MY FAMILY, MY CAREER, MY LIFE, I WOULDNT WANT, ME, MYSELF, I, MEEEEEEE!
Jesus man, learn to use plural pronouns for fucks sake!
    Odd. Odd. Odd.

    • MtnRunner says:

PR hasn’t gotten that memo, Lindy. Keep shouting it here on the interwebs and they surely will eventually and you’ll get those plural pronouns!

      • lindy79 says:

Its actually funnier and sadder in equal amounts now knowing shes pregnant, than it was when it was just an engagement. Hes now forgetting its about him, her and the baby.

        *face palm*

    • Claire. says:

But the weird thing is he has said in the past he wants to raise kids in London. But he omits going into specifics now. It’s like he can’t bring himself to gush over what he has in the past and when he does gush over something he sounds like someone killed his dog. That’s a constant.

  14. NavelLinty says:

Have to say, she doesn’t look that into him. And by “not that into him” I mean “couldn’t give a f**k”

  15. tsmiv2 says:

I wonder were they got the quote. He’s said the exact same thing about moving before baby mama came on the scene. It might be the same quote and the writer just added her name.

    • Felice says:

Yeah it sounds super familiar and they just put her name in. Kinda backfires since it gives the impression they don’t live together.

      • moodgirl says:

Impression? That is how I read it, he doesn’t live with her and I don’t believe he ever has. If he did he would have either used a we, our or left her out entirely because her being with him would be a given. The fact that he includes her as a separate entity – friends, family “and Sophie” live in London speaks volumes.

      • Felice says:

Even if they are together, that just gives the impression he would make her stay with the babies in London while he’s DiCaprio-ing up in LA.

  16. oops says:

Yah. He’s not faultless. I hope he’s not really as douchey as he’s been looking. But yes. It’s a disappointment. Sophie might be perfectly wonderful. But something seems off about her. And while there’s some demographic stuff that makes sense, there are too many other weird things in his choice of her. And all the hiding her? And shotgun reveal? Way to set the love of your life up for worst. Rocky. Public life debut. Ever, brah. Should’ve kept all that under wraps until they were married parents of a newborn. He deserves success but somebody/something has got to get his mind right. But otherwise, I have a weird feeling they’ll be alright. That’s the least you can hope for someone.

  17. Bea says:

Just saw his picture with Hiddleston at BAFTA afterparty and my god he seems like a fun dude to hang out with.. (Sarcasm) It seems like he has grown to genuinely dislike Hiddleston post-War Horse, maybe because it’s becoming more and more obvious that TH has more range than him and is actually competition for him. Seriously I don’t think I can handle any more socially awkward “spectrum” geniuses.

    • 'P'enny says:

It’s more of a look that a friend gives another friend, who is still single and having too much fun and the other is now I’m all serious and grown-up. But, the look could be, Hiddles is showing him how much he has to bend down to reach his height! or Ben needs the toilet and he is stopping him getting past. Or, Ben is breaking his non-drinking or going out for a fag rule and he is stopping him, as friends do. Or, he is telling Ben, you’re not coming past till you’ve promised me that you’ll invite me to the stag-do, if you’re going to go through with silly rushed marriage.

      • Bea says:

LOL all seem plausible but I like the stag-do scenario best. Hiddles seems like the kind of guy who would invite himself to places 😀

      • MtnRunner says:

I’m liking all of those ideas P’enny. It would be fun to post that picture up and ask fans to caption it. Hiddles looking like he’s having the time of his life and Ben, well not so much, but trying to be a good sport. It was a Grey Goose party, after all.

    • InvaderTak says:

I saw those too. It was kinda awkward to say the least. TH looked like his usual over enthused self and BC was well, awkward. I think their “friendship” was a lot fan/media driven though. They worked together, theyre not picking out curtains.

      • 'P'enny says:

Benny doesn’t need Hiddles to pick out curtains now, Sophie has great taste in curtain material however she keeps using the fabric for dresses!

      • MtnRunner says:

That was an awkward picture of those two. I can’t help but wonder if Ben’s jealous of Tom. Hiddles is about to ride the wave that Ben was riding in 2013 and Ben’s needing to shrink into the background to save face. You know they’re not ignorant of that fact that they’re compared a lot online.

      • Lazy says:

Nah, BC wants to back up from what I can tell & he’s got more than enough work coming up. The picture looked to me like they were having a moment but Cumberbatch got caught offguard by whatever the photographer facing them said.

      • et alors says:

@Lazy, it looked to me like they were coming out of a hug but the buttons on their jackets got entangled as Ben’s hand position seems to indicate that he’s trying to undo something. Tom’s laughing because it’s awkward, and Ben is focusing on his task.

As to their friendship, I don’t think they’re “best man at my wedding” friends, but neither are they only work friends. They’ve both referred to each other as best/dear friends, and there are plenty of anecdotes about them bringing up their friendship. For instance, someone who met Ben at a convention last year said he was flipping through a book of drawings that she was having him sign. When he came across a drawing of Tom as Loki, he asked her if Tom had seen it. When she said no, Ben told her Tom was a friend of his and he would get Tom to autograph the drawing for her if she left it along with her address. Pretty cute.

      • Kat says:

“Ben told her Tom was a friend of his and he would get Tom to autograph the drawing for her if she left it along with her address. Pretty cute.”
        ————————————

Aaannd she never saw it again. Not so cute.

      • et alors says:

@Kat, it’s still a cute story of Ben being nice. He probably did give it to Tom or someone on Tom’s team, but Tom had been working almost nonstop since Coriolanus. She may still get it back as fans have been saying they’ve been receiving items that they sent in last year for autographs.

      • Kat says:

I appreciate your optimism, but I think it’s a case of him trying to look cool and chummy to a fan and not bothering to follow through. I’d lay money that hiddleston has never laid eyes on that picture. It’s probably wedging open the door at his agency.

      • j says:

that’s a little ott, i think, kat. he’s seen plenty of artwork of other actors and never offered to do that before. but if bc had it sent to tom’s agency rt away, which i could see, it goes in under order received and i think he’s a year behind.

      • Kat says:

No, it’s not OTT. He got carried away with the good guy thing in front of a fan and got her hopes up. If he didn’t intend to do it he should never have said he would.
I guarantee she will never see that pic again. And why would he send it to toms agency? ?.she could’ve done that herself. Surely the point of him saying he’d take it is because toms a friend and he could give it to him direct?

      • InvaderTak says:

@et alors: Ha. that’s exactly what it looks like happened. Awkward. #awardsseasonproblems They also appear to have a very similar hair color in those pics. Also awkward.

      • Josa says:

That fan has artworks of other actors that she was showing Ben, Ben only picked out Tom’s one and offer to give to Tom. That indicates he thinks he’ll be seeing Tom. If he only just picked it out and sent to his agency, then why not just suggests the fan to send it herself. My take, he has the intention, probably thought he’ll see Tom in person at some point. IIRC, that was Feb/Mar last year? Tom was out of the country until June. By June, Ben had to go to Boston to work himself, and may have forgotten about the artwork already.

      • hermi says:

Actually, before SH, they used to hang out. Last year, BC went to see TH in Coriolanus and then took him out to dinner for his (TH) birthday. I know because some fans run after them from the theatre to the restaurant. I had tickets for the night before. 🙂

      • et alors says:

@InvaderTak, I think they were pretty close to making the expression “joined at the hip” literal. As to the hair color, they probably shared the same bottle of dye. 😉

@Josa, if I recall correctly, this may have been only a couple days before Ben went to see Coriolanus, but I don’t think he personally delivered the drawing to Tom. More than likely, he handed it to an assistant at the event, who in turn sent it to Tom’s team.

      • J says:

@ Kat, sorry, it kinda is imo. like your whole scenario is kinda silly since he doesnt run around offering do this all the time. It’s just more logical he intended to give it to tom

if they ended up not being in the same country at the same time b/c of scheduling, the smart move would be giving it to an agency so you don’t lose or forget about it. or giving it to one of his own people to send to tom for the same reason

      • Kat says:

What difference does it make if he only did it once? I’m not saying he runs around offering to do it for everyone, but that doesn’t make it any less irresponsible to take someone’s original artwork and do God knows what with it.
It really wouldn’t be the smart thing to do to hand to his agency. Like I said, the point of him taking it is to get it to Tom personally. Even if they’re not going to see each other, I’m assuming he knows toms home address, so send it there. It’s quite simple and if he’s not prepared to make that effort then he shouldn’t have offered to take it at all.

      • Maggie says:

        @ Kat
Just asking, but do you actually know that the fan didn’t get the artwork back?

I could be totally wrong but in the back of my mind I might have read somewhere that she did get it back.

Whatever, it was a nice gesture and not something he does on a regular basis.

      • Kat says:

No, she didn’t get it back. I follow her on Twitter.

It’s not a nice gesture if he didn’t follow through with what he promised. It’s an empty, hollow gesture.
I also don’t know what the relevance of him not offering to do it often is? Don’t offer to do it at all if you can’t deliver.

      • Maggie says:

OK so she didn’t get it back but that could be because of a number of reasons, not necessarily because Benedict forgot or didn’t intend to pass it on.

Too many assumptions here for my liking.

      • lindy79 says:

That’s a shame. To have an original piece or artwork go missing must be devastating. Has she tried contacting both their agencies. It will take months to hear back if at all but worth a shot? Might get a bit of clarity on what happened

      • Kat says:

Oh of course, maggie. Far too many assumptions for your liking. ..Not the fact that someone is daring to say something critical or negative about the apple of your eye.
If he’d made the effort to get it back to her. It could’ve happened.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Or discomfort because he really wanted a franchise but couldn’t get one, Tom probably helped him with Marvel, and now he owes him.

      • CK says:

That is one of the funnier things I’ve read today.

      • ANON says:

I think I read an interview with Tom a while ago where he said one of his friends had put him down a bit for doing marvel. He said something about how they had never attempted anything like that themselves. I don’t know why but I always thought it was BC. It was obviously another actor and I can imagine him being patronising about that kind of thing…until doing it himself.

      • j says:

nope, way more likely to be someone from Tom’s theater peers, comic movies are looked down on in a lot of those circles. cumberbatch did a lot of pay the bill projects himself like his folks, always has been a work is work type actor

      • KT says:

Sounds more like a pre-Thor friend. Cumberbatch and Hiddleston met a year after he signed with Marvel.

    • NavelLinty says:

Are you talking about the one where Tommy looks like he’s humping Ben’s leg?

      I always had a suspicion about him…

  18. Bea says:

Sophie looks like Wanda. Same owl face. Freud would have a field day.

  19. an old prude says:

Its interesting that Sophie came after family and friends in his statement ………. …………..

  20. Claire. says:

Other things one may notice he didn’t say:

“Sophie and I have our home here.”

“I’m raising my family here (like I always wanted to.)”

Notice the order he listed them as well. Family. Friends. Octosourpuss.

If what tsmiv says it’s true and PR is just putting out an amended statement, boy is Karon giving Octopus the finger with it. She clearly doesn’t care lol!

    • Chris says:

      http://cumberbuddy.tumblr.com/post/110456535084/benedict-cumberbatch-and-sophie-hunter-arriving-at
have you ever seen this video? It explaines so much! He’s dominant, he’s leading and he gaze up to her in a very intense way and she dont reply. It seems like it’s all a big show.

      • Margret says:

Sooooo sick of her pursed lips puss. She could be Londons Kim Kardashian, infamous for nothing. Yikes!

      • Maggie says:

I just watched that short video and I have no clue what you think you are seeing. It looks like a perfectly normal interaction between two people who are entering a very public space where their every move is going to be filmed. They actually look quite relaxed, friendly and caring.

I think too many people are letting their prejudices colour their perceptions.

      • moodgirl says:

        IMDB.

      • Kat says:

        Maggie,

Are you serious? Really? ‘Perfectly normal’ are not words to describe this ongoing mess. And the ‘relaxed, friendly and caring’? You’ve GOT to be kidding me there.
I’ve never seen him act so badly. One of his biggest downfalls is his inability to act normally around her or say anything convincing or natural. His constant looking at her ear was laughable along with the overdone ‘are you ok’s every six seconds.
He could barely look at the woman since oct to now. If his feelings and actions were natural, he wouldn’t be changing his behaviour now the way he is. It’s glaringly obvious. He’s acting.
And she could barely bring herself to make eye contact with him. The bafta red carpet was riddled with hostility and pretence.

By the way, how did you perceive the absolutely vile look she gave him in the audience? That friendly and caring was it?

Again, there’s massive irony to imdbers discussing being coloured by prejudice, but it literally blows my mind that anyone could convince themselves this is normal.

      • Felice says:

I wonder why no one on IMDB is talking about the video where he’s leaving the BAFTAs and he signs a few autographs and then she glares at him and then storms away while the people are booing at him.

      • Claire. says:

        Link to video please!!!
People who consistently glare to get their point across are control freaks and bullies

      • Felice says:

I exaggerated. You can see her glancing and walking in. The video is far from pleasant in general fyi

        watch?v=rYL9zzuaqAU

      • j says:

he signed for fans the longest this year according to the news, after he was done interviewing

but damn I’m shocked, those people are rude as hell??? i realize there’s a lot of auto hunters though, like most of that front row is guys with board-back pics. dead giveaway

      • Oops! says:

Mm. Felice, I’m usually on your page. But I looked at that short clip a couple of times. The camera work is such a mess one can barely see anything but him talking at the crowd and her glancing back at him but continuing to walk. They all sounded like autograph hunters anyway. What kind of middle aged man is standing out in the middle of a London winter night waiting for a Cumberboyfriend autograph? Nah.

  21. viki says:

So does anyone here think they are getting married this weekend??
Apparently a couple of SH friends from NY is headed to London, one of them with a toddler who was getting fitted a Valentino gown and another friend headed to the Isle of Wight where BC & SH visited last November supposedly looking for wedding venue??

    • future says:

O, for ***** sake. Of course there is something going on but without public registry it is not the BC/SH wedding.

    • Kat says:

I’d like to say I hope not. But apparently he wants to rid himself of all of his dignity and have a Valentino themed Valentine’s Day shotgun wedding with top hats, tails and flower girls in couture just in time for his final Oscar week.
Oh and don’t forget the ‘girl about town’ in the mail who wrote about the engagement before it was announced…a ‘source’ also told her he’d marry on v day. So confirms he/she are keeping the mail informed about their private life. In much the same way as SHOWBIZSPY was told about his plans for an Oscars season gf back in April and the pregnancy in December. Wow, cumberbatch, where’d’ you go? Or perhaps you were always a famewhorey douche. Have an Oscar for being so fabulous at pretending you’re weren’t.

      • ANON says:

The ‘secret girlfriend leaks’ were obviously coming from her. I don’t think anyone else would describe her career as ‘serious’.

      • Kat says:

She wasn’t a secret gf in April. She was living aboard and he was all over the place working. The groundwork for introducing someone as his award season gf was being prepared. Same as posting pg story a month before she appeared with her belly dress on a red carpet.

    • viki says:

See that’s the thing, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some sort of ceremony going on this weekend complete with photo op for publicity sake. So there’s really no need for public registry if it isn’t legal and is just for show. Who knows, they might even claim its a photoshoot for Vogue?! But of course the media will make it out to be like they got married for reals, they’ve even started claiming her to be his wife.

      • Maggie says:

So you think they are going to pretend to get married?

Good grief this is all getting out of hand isn’t it? Sophie is having their baby, they are engaged so no doubt they will get married at some time. Is it really any of our business when it happens. The speculation and fantasy narratives are ridiculous.

      • Kat says:

Wow. An imdber talking about speculation and fantasy narratives.. The irony stings..
And seeing as he’s purposely MADE this shotgun engagement and pregnancy with a woman he’s barely been seeing for a few months into tabloid fodder himself, then I guess it is everyone’s business.

      • moodgirl says:

It’s hysterical how Maggie complains about speculation and fantasies when her post is filled with fantasy and speculation. I hear IMDB calling.

      • Felice says:

I honestly can’t wait to see the inevitable bloodbath on IMDB after the news of the split breaks (could be this year could be 2020 but it will happen)

    • Oops! says:

As an inspired commenter on tumblr asked: Did somebody say Wight wedding? Shotgun!

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAZQaYKZMTI

  22. ANON says:

In the pictures he looks like he’s really making a point of ‘looking lovingly at her’. From him it looks like an intentional pose rather than the cameras just happening to catch a nice moment between them.
She looks awkward though and doesn’t really meet his eyes.

  23. Sunflower says:

ugh. Another baity tweet, this time courtesy of Amanda Abbington. I honestly hope they do marry this weekend just so I can stop following this mess.

    • InvaderTak says:

I took the bait. And yeah that wasn’t so much baity to me but trolling. The followup is bound to throw some people into a frenzy too. Lots going on this Saturday but she and MF will be at home together. Anyone know who the three dudes are? Dogs? They have a daughter and a son don’t they?

      • Maggie says:

        Talk about paranoia!

Amanda calls everyone Dude and she followed it up explaining that she is spending Saturday with Martin and her two children.

People are reading so much into nothing at all.

      • InvaderTak says:

@Maggie: I was speculating on what people will be speculating about those tweets. I don’t do twitter and I was just wondering who she was referring to since I’m not familiar with her twitter chatter.. In the US anyway dudes usually refers to guys which is what my last question was about. So, not paranoid just wondering. The fandom conspiracy theorists are fairly entertaining to watch actually.

      • future says:

        @Maggie
I just don’t understand why are you coming back to BC’s comment section. You must have realized that your opinion is hugely different than the majority here? And jet you are back again and again. Why don’t you stay with the ones you share the same opinion on the topic because here you are not showing in a good mental light.

      • An says:

That jibe at her mental state was really unnecessary, future. She has the right to her opinion just like you.

      • Maggie says:

Oh I am so sorry Future. I didn’t realise that everyone had to agree on gossip blogs. I thought the point was to discuss the pros and cons of a situation and get the facts correct, not just blindly agree with everyone.

Of course I realise my opinions differ that is why I am commenting for heavens sake. If I agreed with the nonsense on here I wouldn’t need to say anything.

I am not “showing in a good mental light”, oh the irony of that statement.

      • Kat says:

        Maggie.

You don’t have opinions..you snap at the heels of everyone who dares to question him. It’s not healthy and it’s not welcome on a non creepy/crazed house of worship.

      • Kaylie says:

Going to be quite frank for a minute here and say there’s healthy fan behavior versus the unhealthy blind adoration just like there is criticism versus unhealthy relentless negativity. Examples of all are present on this post.

      • moodgirl says:

Maggie is a fan of Benedict and feels he can do no wrong even when the wrong is obvious. We are fans of Benedict but we are not stupid. Maggie is a IMDBer and is here to be contrary. That’s all.

    • hermi says:

Seriously, how tacky is it to get married on V day and just before the Oscars to the woman you got pregnant months ago while dating occasionally, and all when you’ve always claimed you wanted to keep it private????
And with all sorts of people dropping hints and just so you can talk about you you you you at the Oscars, instead of celebrating films and performances?
I can already imagine the captions: I don’t care I didn’t win the Oscar, I have the woman I married next to me, she’s the only prize I need… GAG….
Eddie Redmayne, who’s actually winning prizes, got married without much fanfare and his wife is not parading around like she’s some sort of second-hand royalty.
What a disappointment you have been, Mr C.
It’s true that people change in time, but I would never have imagined this level of self absorption and bad taste. We live and learn.
Ps by the way, BC said something like “if you like me, you have to like her”. Well, tbh, I think it’s a lot easier to simply start disliking you. We are the company we keep.

      • Kat says:

        Agree hermi.

      • Claire. says:

So I just went to the faculty office’s site: you need to read banns a week in advance so even a Coe wedding couldn’t be gotten around. They also would need to marry in their own parish. Special licences seem to be esp for getting around that. No mention of what’s required to get around banns.

My guess is if anything is going down it’s an engagement party, though how these two could throw a party when they can’t stand one another is a mystery to me.

      • Hexentanz says:

Very well said Hermi, I agree

      • Oops! says:

I know a lot of people think that there’s no way BC would get an exception, but I think his intense internet fandom would get him an exception to the public intention requirement. To the extent that any leaks in the registrar would be hunted down and terminated in the worst way. Everyone keeps comparing him to Stephen Fry. Fry is well liked and a celebrity but not “foaming at the mouth fangirl/fanboy” style. Fry’s announcement was a nice bit of entertainment news. Cumberbatch’s intention might make an entertainment journalist’s entire career. Fry’s a good comedian. Cumberbatch is “an actor for his generation,” the “new, ‘old Hollywood,'” the “internet’s [freaking] boyfriend.”

People compare him to Clooney. No doubt. Clooney’s A list and everyone was surprised he decided to marry. But his core base of swooning fans are all aging now. They wanted to see the pics, but they weren’t doing some sort of countdown to the royal wedding. There is way too much steam surrounding this for BC. Media is living off of his engagement and pregnancy. They barely have to do anything but mention Ben & Sophie. *Click* Look at Celebitchy, ffs.

I’m not pretending to be better than anyone else. I’m fascinated and all different shades of feels too.

I would not be surprised at all if BC got away with a secret wedding. Of course, he and Lady Sophie of the Wannabes will bait us all the way. But it’s going to be a “surprise announcement.” Only thing I wouldn’t put money on is if we get any pics.

      • Kat says:

        @oops

BC doesn’t get to escape the law because he has a lot of fans on Tumblr.

      • moodgirl says:

“I need an exemption from the law because people look at my pictures on the internet.”

    • Claire. says:

Why is everything automatically baiting? Maybe there’s a bunch of other stuff happening and she was referring to that. I just don’t get how every thing is secret code to drop hints. Maybe she wasn’t referring to a wedding at all. Would be shocked if a colleague refused to go to his wedding just to hang out at home and have his partner announce that

    • Ingrid says:

Ugh… It’s clear they want to 1. Throw people off or 2. They are getting married and making sure it leaks. Too many baity tweets from every friend to be anything else.

For a church wedding, they wouldn’t need a notice. Banns to be read x3 or church can make an exception on some grounds (preggers I assume is one of them LOL. ) or they can do the legal paperwork in US. Much easier.

Why they are rushing, is another question. PR-wise it looks soooo bad. It would be better to wait and marry after the baby as in “we wanted to” , not “we had to”. Idiots.

      • Kat says:

What about any of this suggests they want to ‘throw people off’? I’d say the opposite is happening.
If they wanted privacy they could have it. Like every other famous person who’s married quietly. But this whole debacle has been about attention seeking, games and baiting the media… The engagement and pg confirmed that they are timing these things for optimum publicity and making sure people are aware of what they’re doing.
As for timing? Shotgun and Oscars. Simple.

      • Claire. says:

The stylist’s tweet has been debunked as being for something else in Chelsea, a photo shoot. Would be more inclined to see the brat in Valentino as being more indicative but still, I think all of this is based on a ton of assumptions, and am not convinced it’s “baiting”. Think about it if they got married and AA was referring publicly that she would rather spend the sat at home than at a colleague’s wedding it’s a nasty thing to say. She doesn’t strike me as the type, it makes no sense to insult BC like that publicly but wth do I know…

      • Kaylie says:

I took a look at her Twitter out of curiosity and laughed. She meant holiday happenings. There are tons of things going on in London. That’s why she follows up with that line about it sounding smug, as that can be a lonely day for many people.

@Claire, not shocked that people are jumping to attribute things to BC, especially if there’s a way to make it negative. Conspiracy stuff can turn into a rabbit hole fast.

  24. Pabena6 says:

Anybody else see Princess Anne, especially in that first pic?

  25. Alice says:

BC is on Nightline tonight. There’s an instagram pic of him with Rachel, the reporter, and you’d think they were engaged, or at least in love. Looks more natural than what we saw Sunday.

    • Felice says:

Well duh it’s Rachel Smith, Miss USA 2007 and 4th Runner Up Miss Universe. Tom Hiddleston is flirty with her too.

      • Oops! says:

        Omg, no kidding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfEOiGZmgxQ

He looks like he wants to eat her. She is gorgeous. (Some girls have all the luck.)

The photos of her & BC don’t look too flirty to me, but he doesn’t look uncomfortable. Just a little sad. Maybe he was a little wistful for the days when he could have given it a shot.

  26. Blenam says:

I’m one of the minority who find BC extremely likeable but unattractive, so not meaning to shade her but, he’ll, she looks like epic amounts of trouble…those pursed lips and close set eyes…*shudder*

  27. MyLittlePony says:

Had a look at the video posted above, and WOW! Sophie’s transformation from the ordinary looking woman at the tennis match in Paris into this (!) is nothing short of stunning. How do things like this happen?! That open back Margiela dress is a killer, she is months pregnant yet pulls it off like no one. Yes, they look awkward together, and obviously they have had too much in one year, and on top of everything it seems that Cumby’s Oscar campaign has pretty much blown up in his face, but she does look absolutely fantastic in that dress.

    • Alice says:

She looked better at the FO. She looks rather older and hard now. Maybe it’s the perpetually clenched jaw and pursed lips giving that effect.

  28. Kat says:

“Someone is going to come Into the world as our child. It’s very private for me”

This one goes straight to the top of the WTAF list. There’s a fair chance his head will explode soon.
Also, let’s drop the ‘it’s so private’ schtick, shall we? You made a sideshow of it for the press at a time when your media attention was very high. At least admit to that and stop trying to act like you’re still above it.

    • haberdasher says:

What *didn’t* he mention in the video compared to others? Hmmm. Or perhaps the omission was just an edit for the sake of time.

    • Oops! says:

Where did he say that about “someone” coming into the world as their child?

      • Alice says:

On Nightline, which, judging by the clothes, was taped the same day as Ellen, right after the GG.

    • 'P'enny says:

good grief! Bendy stop sounding like a stuck-up public school prince. Can’t you just say, “we are having a baby”

and, he’s lost the private the argument well and truly.

    • Lindy79 says:

Tonight, the role of our child will be played by……….someone

I truly wonder does he know how weird he sounds and if hes aware that you can be happy but also private. The press are not out of line in congratulating him, or asking is he excited to be a dad so he needs to seriously knock the offended and pissy attitude as if they’re invading his privacy. There are MUCH better ways to answer, show your happiness and still not give anything away.

I REALLY hope he learns this soon or Marvel will give him a total bitchslap

      • Kat says:

        Lindy,

But I’d forgive and understand that need for privacy if he’d been remotely private about it himself, but he’s laid out for the awards season. He could’ve kept this situation private, at least until the Oscars are done.
But he kept dropping hints about a pregnancy and then she appears at PIFF wearing her belly dress and doing her best “I’M PREGNANT EVERYBODY!!!”
He also hasn’t shut up about it. All these weird words and soundbites. I’m beginning to think he’s not all there.

      • Lindy79 says:

Personally, I think it’s that he wants it both ways. He wants to be the private serious ac-tor but he also wants to be Hollywood A List and on the front of magazines etc.

There are a LOT of actors out there who just do the work, promote and then disappear. He hasn’t been doing that for the last few years and he’s gotten a taste for it. Sure he spent 6 months of 2014 just doing promo work, fashion shows, cons and various PR events that had zero to do with acting. If he was a private guy who was all about the work, that wouldn’t have happened. He wants the press attention, to do interviews, go on talk shows but on his terms and frankly needs to grow up and accept that it doesn’t work that way.
I think he’s also pissed that his non-campaign campaign has been called out (when he referenced Lainey on that talk show).

Either way, I’ve never seen someone on such a professional and personal high, act like such a tit.

      • Oops! says:

Gawd! You said it so perfectly and succintly! I just couldn’t with the “true fans” thing. I still think this is a shotgun arrangement. But if he’s happy, he can show it without spilling all the deets. What happened to Mr. I’m-so-great-at-keeping-secrets-my-momma-can’t-even-tell? WTF is wrong with him? Where are these friends who are supposed to keep him stable? Have they been in the monkey house so long that they can’t smell the sh!t either?

I’m torn. Do I ignore every article/interview from now on so that I can still enjoy his acting? Or do I let his massive, incompetent ego and PR machine completely raze any affection or admiration I could feel for him & his talent?

      • KT says:

I agree with you on his delivery, Lindy79, needs work.

The whole PR circus is an interestingly complex subject. A lot of them believe press/exposure is “necessary” if you want your choice of roles and any measure of influence over studios. I used to think otherwise, but so much has changed over the last five years, I’m no longer sure.

What he can’t do going forward—I realize this is pre-race drop out, so we may still see improvement yet— is complain about expected, non-harmful invasions of privacy. He still can draw the line at certain subjects politely, as that does not go out the window just because he’s not been private about other things.

      • Oops! says:

“There are a LOT of actors out there who just do the work, promote and then disappear.” Two words: Lee Pace.

Slow claps for everything you’ve said, Lindy. He is so over his fandom. And it’s been up in a lather for quite some time now but he was complicit. Not just because he’s handsome & talented, but because he full speed ahead engaged with it. The media makes fun of Cumberbitches for “seeing him as an internet boyfriend.” But who was he? Joaquin Phoenix’s character in Her? He courted this attention hard. And turned the ham up all the way to high with all the romantic sighing about family and children. Now he looks like wants to set the roof on fire if anyone even breathes the words “Sophie” or “baby.”

      • Felice says:

The really loony fans won’t leave even when he really marries. They think that they are one big happy family. He will never shake them off unless he directly outs them for being loony.

      • an says:

“Now he looks like wants to set the roof on fire if anyone even breathes the words “Sophie” or “baby.””

That’s owing to a combo of problems in his personal life and a paranoid mistrust of press. I don’t know quite how to put it without sounding harsh, but fans are almost never a significant personal influence on a celeb’s life, and if they are, it means something is wrong with the celeb mentally.

      • Oops! says:

Yes, Felice! I tried posting similar sentiments… but maybe I posted ALL THE SENTIMENTS! And that was just too much. But ITA with you. His “true fans” don’t question him but they are still all up in his business.

An, I get you. But I don’t know that I agree. Some celebs don’t figure out a balance and the popularity goes to their head but also makes them feel trapped & resentful. I should’ve seen it coming. Some of his comments in interviews… Especially the ones about the camera phones. He legit gets snapped or tweeted in his “off time” quite a bit. But it got to the point where I could imagine him literally harassing a stranger who was truly texting someone. And then thinking his suspicions were confirmed because that person wouldn’t let him (also a stranger) go through their phone.

He wants it all & this got out of hand. Partially his fault; partially just the nature of the fandom. I think (differing opinions aside and whatnot) we’re a group of people who are exceptionally intelligent and analytical. Sometimes too much. Most sheep just buy tickets and stuff. Harmless. But thinkers? Watch out.

      • Felice says:

Honestly, it seems that the big picture is that he’s really not snapped or tweeted that much. London’s a big city and he goes out every day and no one tweets him every day. It’s only when he’s at a show or any event really. People see the Kardashians every day but that’s because they have photags on retainer.

      • Oops! says:

Yet another good point, Felice. Maybe that’s just another example of his myopia. Because he certainly seems to think that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YvAYIJSSZY

      • an says:

@Oops!: I’m going to go a little deeper with it and say beyond personal problems, he has an issue with the press, and the press is driven in part by fans although they are their own are not an issue.

Ugh, I hope that makes sense!

      • Mosby says:

        Yes to this whole subthread.

    • **sighs** says:

I don’t understand where he gets this weird word salad with regards to this whole situation. I realize he sometimes is strangely antique in his language, but this is so beyond that. It’s like he’s a complete non-entity in the situation. It’s not even part of his plane of being.

      • KT says:

Based on my experience, he’s been sounding a lot more scripted than usual during this campaign. I know, sounds strange, why would his wording be so odd if it’s scripted and all, yet he’s got a lot of the typical signs, like repetitive wording by order with reinforced themes and pauses before answering certain questions.

TL, DR is that they are hiding something and he apparently can’t be trusted to not give it away.

      • gg says:

KT: any ideas on what they are hiding? (Still trying to get over the “somebody who’s going to come into the world as our child” working. Apparently leaving Sophie’s womb as an 8-year-old, skipping babyhood completely???)

      • Claire. says:

Yes I’d like to know what you think they’re hiding!

gg and Claire, I honestly don’t know. I’d say along the lines of something you absolutely could not tolerate being out in the press or discussing with strangers for career reasons, personal reasons or both.

That does eliminate out baby out of wedlock and liability gossip you could never prove enough for a paper to safely touch, such as Hunter being an escort.

Ladies, tumblr skeptics are convinced the wedding is happening for reasons I’m still not getting. Meanwhile what say you?

I don’t follow all of this too much, so could someone who is a regular on here please explain to me what the issue is? Up thread, someone said something about the predicament that he is in, and other posts have given me the impression that he is in some sort of trouble, or something?

I am not being snarky, just wanting to understand what the controversy is? I have no idea about the woman, but she seems a decent match physically. BC isn’t a drop dead gorgeous guy, he is more of unique and intriguing guy. His looks catch your attention, but it takes you a while to figure out if that is because you like the look or not. His voice and his skill keep you interested.

I thought he was great in Imitation game, and in another year, that could have been an easy winner, but after seeing Michael Keaton in Birdman, I just can’t imagine another actor topping that performance this year, and I honestly didn’t really like the movie very much. Cooper, Redmayne and Carrell also had great performances, even if some of the films were just so so. BC is a truly talented actor. I just think that he needs to keep his eye on the long game, and not the short game. He is still fairly young and winning now won’t necessarily help his career. He needs to take on interesting projects, avoid the temptation to always be in the leading role and take on supporting roles that surprise and demonstrate other facets to his talent.
