Cold Case, Without a Trace facing cancellation

The CBS network makes its bread and butter off crime procedurals like CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, Criminal Minds, NCIS and Numb3rs. This season the network has added two more: The Mentalist and Eleventh Hour.

Variety is reporting that LL Cool J will star in a spin-off of NCIS based in LA.

However, two of the network’s stable of crime shows are facing cancellation, according to Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly.

CBS has alerted execs at Without a Trace and Cold Case that the long-running procedurals are prime candidates for cancellation come May. “They no longer have the type of ratings that justify the massive overhead,” points out an Eye source, who adds that the Trace and Case bean counters are looking for ways to trim costs and avoid getting the ax.

[From Entertainment Weekly, print edition, March 20, 2009 issue]

Ausiello cites multiple sources claiming producers are asking cast members to take pay cuts or forfeit annual raises.

Without a Trace stars Anthony LaPaglia, Poppy Montgomery and Eric Close as members of a New-York based FBI unit dedicated to finding missing persons.

Cold Case features Kathryn Morris and Danny Pino as part of a cold case unit based in Philadelphia.

Even if the actors do accept lower salaries, the shows may still get cut. Cold Case and Without a Trace, like a lot of the cookie-cutter crime dramas, have solid viewer numbers, but not among the much-desired 18-49 demographic.

Without a Trace began in 2002, airing Thursdays after mega-hit CSI, but has since moved time slots several times. Now airing at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, its ratings have slipped out of the top 20.

Cold Case debuted in 2003. For the week of March 2, 2009, it came in thirteenth place, with 12.62 million viewers.

Reps for CBS and Warner Bros. declined to comment. Uber-mogul Jerry Bruckheimer produces both Cold Case and Without a Trace, along with all of the CSIs and the new show Eleventh Hour.

The problem with these shows is they all blend together. The writers can’t seem to come up with original crimes for the teams to solve, so they try to spice things up by focusing on the characters’ private lives, but that too becomes redundant. There are only so many crises a law-enforcement officer can endure, so the characters end up getting shot and hospitalized, pregnant, addicted to painkillers, or having secret affairs with co-workers — or all of the above.

Another possible solution to raise ratings would be to pull a “Law & Order,” i.e. change up the cast, especially those actors who refuse lower salaries. This can be risky as well, but if it works on CSI, with Laurence Fishburne replacing William Petersen, then Anthony LaPaglia’s Agent Jack Malone may be forced into retirement to make room for Hugo Weaving and Kathryn Morris’s Detective Lily Rush may be killed off in favor of Carrie-Ann Moss.

I like cold case, but it one of those shows that gets bumped for football or other random crap. Will miss it, but will likely see it again on tnt or tbs. Love those stations!

  2. Kimberly says:

yea idk , i just got into “without a trace” but I wouldn’t miss it .

Just like manda said the reruns or continued production of these shows may end up on other stations .

  3. Ryo says:

For some reason I only catch those shows on like TNT late at night. I just forget that they’re primetime shows.

  4. amanda says:

i may actually start to watch without a trace again if they got rid of anthony lapaglia.. that actor singlehandedly ruined the show for me

  5. Kimble says:

I find Cold Case hard to watch since Kathryn got her fish lips – they are way too distracting and she had such a cute face before.

Why do actresses do that to themselves?

  6. ViV says:

I like Cold Case and I hope it doesn’t get canceled.

  7. Jenna says:

Aw but I like those two shows. Bump CSI:New York if anything.

  8. Hieronymus Grex says:

Bump any of the six CSI programs for that matter, just pick one.

I’d like to point out that Without a Trace, while not getting the ratings it may have gotten in the past, still wins it’s time slot in total viewers every single week over SVU. Despite being moved yet again and given very little promotion-love from the network. People are failing to take into account that viewership in the 10 pm slot is falling across the board, as evidenced by Fox’s move to do away with scripted programming at the 10 pm slot next season. Without a Trace still DOES make the weekly Top 20 when new episodes air (the last three weeks were reruns) and even made the Top 10 at least once this season. The idea of replacing Anthony LaPaglia on the show is not going to fly. Without a Trace is much less of an “ensemble” show than CSI is. Jack Malone is and always has been the main character, the show revolves around him. CSI did not revolve around Grissom. And it should revolve around Malone, Anthony LaPaglia is an amazing actor as evidenced by his numerous accolades and awards (Tony Award, Emmy Award, and Golden Globe, to name a few).

Aw for pete’s sake, really? Both shows are well written and acted. They would leave holes in the schedule for sure. As opposed to CSI Miami which I stupidly watched one night – every five minutes I was thinking, what am I doing? This has got to be the biggest load of crap on TV. It’s an hour I’ll never get back. And yet this turd of a programme outrates most others, it’s a wonder there’s anything good left on network TV.

  11. Jane says:

Cold Case? 🙁 No, I have been watching since the beginning. I guess people don’t want to watch well thought out shows.

  12. Cas says:

    Cold Case is brilliant! 🙁

  13. RAN says:

Me too Kimble! I absolutely LOVED Cold Case and watched it from the beginning. But… I also found it hard to watch after she had her face redone – it’s almost sickening to watch and I can’t concentrate on the show because I’m constantly staring at her face. It’s weird, but that’s why I stopped watching it. Just can’t get into it anymore.

Come On! If you have to bump any show get rid of CSI Miami, the acting is boring and H as he is called has to be the most wooden actor bar none. Without a trace and Cold case files really makes a difference by showing real missing people. Please save these two shows!!
