Cate Blanchett shut down a dumb question with an f-bomb: righteous or rude?

Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett’s still doing the rounds for Cinderella. She visited with Australian journalist Jonathan Hyla on The Project. The interview took an unorthodox turn. Many media outlets are focusing upon Cate dropping an f-bomb when Hyla asks a weird question about leashing the movie’s cat (I haven’t watched the film yet). She did drop an f-bomb, no lie.

If you take Cate’s response out of context, the f-bomb makes her look a little rude and possibly unprofessional. But the whole interview was offbeat. Hyla and Cate bantered about potato vodka, beer, and sex for over four minutes. They were vibing off each other well. Then Hyla asked asked the cat question, which was a little dumb (but not as dumb as a pumpkin turning into a coach). Cate wrinkled her nose in faux-distaste and shut down the interview in a joking manner:

Hyla: “Serious question: How were you able to get that cat to do what you wanted to do on a leash? Because I try and put my girlfriend’s cat on a leash and it just never works for me.”

Blanchett: “That’s your question? That’s your f***ing question?”

[From The Project]

This was quite possibly the classiest f-bomb in history. Hyla didn’t act insulted, and both of them knew Cate was joking around. They were having a grand time, and the soundbite age divvied up the interview for scrutiny. The Project released a statement on their website, saying they contributed to the miscommunication (time constraints prevented them airing the whole interview at once). They understood why the media seized upon the f-bomb: “We were delighted to learn that Hyla and Cate Blanchett share the same wicked sense of humour. It is one of the funniest interviews we have ever done.

Here’s the full interview, which Hyla posted to his Twitter page. It’s cute.

I have an orange/purple top exactly the same color as her dress and it’s one of my favorite tops, love both items

I think they’re making a bigger deal than what it is, if you see the entire thing you can tell it was all in fun

  2. paola says:

I thought it was hilarious! She is such a sport! And the reporter was laughing too. I didn’t see anything rude.

    • Jac says:

I agree – she didn’t seem serious about it, it looks like it was all in good fun.

    • GoNatural says:

Agree – the guy was an idiot, trying to be funny when he’s not and Cate called him out. Period. Hardly newsworthy.

  3. Kristen says:

    She. Is. GORGEOUS.

  4. inthekitchen says:

For some reason she bugs the crap out of me.

…or should I say the F**K out of me?!

    • Kara says:

      She’s trying too hard.

      • SnarkySnarkers says:

Totally agree! Theres something very “Goopy” about her to me for some reason too.

    • Kiddo says:

I used to like her a lot, and then she got overexposed and annoyed me, but now that she’s been off the interview circuit for a while, I’m fine with it. I saw her Blue Jasmine film when it aired on TV for free, and I just didn’t find the performance as earth-shatteringly revelatory as other people did. I felt it was a fairly standard neurotic-self-absorbed-female-Woody-Allen-movie-trope-role. I think she’s a very good actress, but the general love for her, at least here, exceeds my personal appreciation of her.

      • Alison says:

Hello … thank you so much for saying this. I couldn’t agree more. Her ‘magic’ has definitely worn off on me. Especially after her performance in ‘Kingdom of The Crystal Skull’. I don’t understand why she gets a hall pass on all her hammy performances. Her performance in Blue Jasmine was out of sync with the whole ensemble cast. It was like she was acting in a totally different film.

    • Nev says:

      WORD.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Can’t take her, either. But I didn’t think there was anything wrong with the interview. Just her Woody Allen loving smug self.

      • O-)(-O says:

The way she conducted her Oscar campaign during the Woody Allen controversy was very off putting. She came across crude and greedy. And at least to me she was never as talented as people make her out to be. She is one of those try hard actresses who never quite get there. I think her popularity has a lot to do with her catering to the mainstream, she wants to be the new Meryl Streep.

  5. SuePerb says:

    OMG, that was so funny

  6. Kimmy says:

I love her so much. Everyone knows Cate has a potty mouth.

  7. dottylassy says:

Definitely rude. People are giving her free pass so easily.

    • KellyBee says:

I agree with the free pass because is this was Eva Mendes there would have been 100 comments talk about how rude and class less she is.

I mean she made a comment about how SHE perfers solf pants and dresses/skirts to jeans and was jump on for it.

      • Beth says:

I didn’t find it rude, but I do agree with this comment. Someone like Eva Mendes would have been assailed for saying this. That are certainly favorites on this site that can get away with most things, while others who get scrutinized for merely sneezing.

    • lucy2 says:

I didn’t find it rude at all. Watching the video, you can see they’re just joking around.

    • Sarah says:

Haha it’s an Australian thing. We don’t get worked up over a few swear words

    • Kylie says:

I don’t think you get Aussie humour. There was nothing rude in that interview. The seemed like two mates taking the piss out of each other. That’ just what we do.

  8. Belle Epoch says:

I swear far too much but try to use “freaking” or even “friggin” in public. They are almost as satisfying but without the shock and awe response. If she had said “that’s your freaking question?” this would not be news. She knew what she was saying!

    • Jag says:

I also say “frickin’,” and “frick and frack!” in lieu of the f-bomb when I’m trying to be good. A meme going around says that “friggin'” is actually calling the goddess Frig to come smite enemies, so that one works as well. lol

  9. TOKEN says:

    I just love cate!!!

  10. Nessa says:

    I f*cking love her!

  11. Reece says:

I was waiting to see the whole interview. Silly click baiters making a mountain out of a mole hill. Not you CBers. The other ones.
    Anyway, it was funny.
I want that purple and coral dress!

  12. Rhiley says:

I watched it and it seemed sort of staged to me, or at least I didn’t think it was rude. It almost seemed like a British “Between Two Ferns,” kind of segment. I dunno. I was hoping it would be more “righteous” than it actually is.

  13. Micki says:

    That’s such a non-story.

  14. lola says:

honestly dropping the f-bomb is really not as big a deal back home in Australia as it seems to be in the US.

  15. allons-y alonso says:

Making mountains out of molehills. The Project isn’t that great a show anyways….

  16. Lucy says:

Oh, look, Cate has an actual sense of humor. And in other news, water is wet.

  17. Pinky Rose says:

Lol at the media making a fuss of this. They were clearly having a good, fun time together in all the interview. She was actually game for all his questions, joking around. Maybe this dry sense of humor isn’t for everyone, but hey she has been always like this. I don’t know why they are making her to be some serious actress who doesn’t goof around when since her first interview back in 1997 she was the same way (and obviously knows when it’s appropriate time to it).

  18. AmericanInOz says:

I agree with Lola, dropping the f bomb here is no big deal. I’m also willing to bet that the journalist and Cate know each other from other projects and are quite possibly friends/friendly. The population is much smaller than in America and if you work in a particular industry you usually see the same reporters, PR, marketing etc people OVER and OVER again.

Even if you try to avoid them.

  19. Jazz says:

    It’s Australian humour!
