Kylie Jenner accused of blackface in photos, she asks people to ‘calm down’

Kylie Jenner scores an amazing amount of magazine photoshoots for a 17-year-old girl. The latest entry in Kylie’s portfolio created quite a stir. This picture is actually one that Kylie deleted, but her hairdresser posted it too. Kylie’s caption was, “What I wish I looked like all the time.” Her hairdresser thought it was hilarious that “peeps be getting turnt up on this skin sitch.” The controversy is that the shoot looks like Kylie did blackface.

Kylie went to church with her family yesterday, and Tyga was there too. Before church, she checked in on Twitter to explain the photos.

That last tweet is interesting, considering how the Kardashian women go to great lengths to modify their original bods. Kylie’s defense is that she was not wearing makeup to make her skin look darker, and it was all a visual lighting trick. But look at the top photo again. Her scalp isn’t as dark as the rest of her skin, so there was definitely some makeup involved in this transformation.

One more thing. Zendaya Coleman “liked” Kylie’s original (now-deleted) photo, and people asked her about it on Twitter. Zendaya rethought the shoot and then tweeted, “My baaaaadddd.” She added, “At first, I saw more of an avatar look but thank y’all for keepin me on point …. we all gotta stay aware of what image we project #lessons.

Even though Kylie deleted the photo that showed her scalp, she did post another picture on Instagram asking everyone to “calm down.

Here are some photos of Kylie out for lunch and shopping at Fred Segal last week.

“I’m happy with the way God created me” lolz forever

  2. NewWester says:

What better way for people to remember her name than to have some controversy. It will make the sales of her future p0rn video more successful . Also Demon Mother and her Coven go to church?!!!!!

    • Serenity says:

Yeah, we need to figure out how Lucifer’s Homegirl made it through the church doors without getting struck by lightening!

    • smcollins says:

Lol. My thoughts exactly. And here I thought they only worshipped the “religion” of money, fame, and excess. Who knew?

    • burnsie says:

Did you see what some of them were wearing to church? Damn. Things sure have changed since I was a kid. Back in my day, we had to dress up for church.

    • GiGi says:

Isn’t there some kind of Kontroversy about this church – like, they own it or something like that? I think there is. I remember them being in trouble for dontating large sums to this church that they have some kind of financial stake in & it being some kind of grifter tax shelter situation.

    • TeaAndSympathy says:

I believe they attended Easter service at the Kris Jenner-Kardashian Church of Present Day Narcissists, Famewhores and Moneygrubbers.

  3. kdlaf says:

It might be naive of me to say but Im really starting to think the Kardashian empire is dwindling. Yeah Kendall and Kylie have the huge followings but the Kardashians are boring at this point and even they are beginning to age out of their demographic. As for this pic, I didnt really see it any more or less offensive than other plasticly looking pictures Kylie posts. Im actually worried for little north =( i wonder when her first trip to the “dermatologist” will be…

    • Sugar says:

Their new $100 million contract with E says otherwise, though.

      • Kdlaf says:

What choice does E! have though? KUWTK is all E! has. And yeah they are still out there obviously but I just dont really see them being relevant in the next 4 years or so. As i said, call me naive #kanyeshrug

      • Bridget says:

To me it says that E! needs the K ardashians and doesn’t have anything else to put on the air. I wonder how well E! is doing. It’s a channel devoted to celebrity and entertainment coverage, but it’s being done better on the internet. Their reality shows (aside from Kardashians and the WWE show) are terrible, and their entertainment news is awful. Fashion Police is dying.

      • TheOnlyDee says:

Every time I’m at the gym, KUWTK or one of its spinoffs is the only thing that is ever on E! Besides that, The Soup, E! News, the Royals show they pimped hard and the now defunct Fashion Police, I could not name any other shows on that network. It should really be called K! at this point.

      • V4Real says:

Actually their ratings have been dropping so they might be going out while they’re still kind of on top. I bet the two younger siblings will try to get a spinoff once KUWTK ends. The others will become irrelevant like Paris Hilton.

      • Felice says:

The Soup needs to end. It’s gone on too long and it’s not funny anymore.

  4. Maya says:

If some people have issues with this and call it racism – then they are the ones with the problem.

I cannot believe we live in a world where we are afraid of saying or doing something because someone will get offended.

    • Tpaz says:

I totally agree. There was a time when Kevin Aucoin did this for many of his books and he was praised.

This is a silly thing for anyone to get offended about. She looks more extraterrestrial than anything.

      • Blackcat says:

        Ditto. I
see a woman with a computer enhanced whacked out color face, not blackface or racism. For once, I have to agree with a Kardashian ( I know check the back of my neck) everybody “calm down.”

    • sally says:

this is NOT blackface. i think she looks gorgeous. Its black…and purple and blue and silver makeup and lighting.

      • dragonlady sakura says:

Being African-American, I’ve witnessed some really racist crap, but I didn’t find this to be blackface. I automatically thought it was futuristic and alien. People can read what they want into anything.

      • Dani says:

A lot of my FB friends said the same thing as dragonlady. One girl who I’m actually very friendly with from high school still, and she’s African American, said that she’s offended that people would even consider this blackface when the first thing you notice is the avatar vibe she gives off.

    • Crumpet says:

Yup. See my post in the Vijay thread for proof of that.

    • Michelle says:

@Maya, I agree with you that calling this black face is farfetched, but I think people getting worked up about it is legit. The number one most important issue that I have with the Kardashians and that I think a lot of people find fault with as well is that they’re obsessed with black culture, date the same guys as women like Amber Rose and Blac Chyna but somehow think that they’re above and better than these women. The Kardashian women want to be with black men, but they don’t respect being black. Whether someone loves or hates this family, they need to be called out for their bullshit.

      • Asiyah says:

        My thoughts exactly.

      • snowflake says:

I disagree with that. I’ve watched their show a lot, and they welcomed AA men just as much as anyone. If anything they think they’re better than everybody, not just minorities.

      • jwoolman says:

The Kardashians are obsessed with wealth, with the possible exception of Kourtney who seems to quietly pursue real business opportunities that don’t rely on porny shoots. They (except for Kourtney) don’t have the education and natural classiness to be attractive to the old rich, so they go after the new rich. It’s just accidental that new rich also tends to coincide with rappers/related types of entertainers and professional athletes, who in the U.S. are disproportionately black.

    • Jane says:

You really have issues with black folks. I wonder why. ( reply to maya).

    • SnowGlow says:

Basically. People trip over themselves to try and out SJW each other.

  5. tifzlan says:

The trashbag band of Kardashian devils have really been ramping up their antics ever since Kimberly married Kanye and had his half-black child. I feel like they think that because Kanye is black, that makes them “black by association” too so they can pull all of this stupid crap and no one will notice. But hey, ask them to comment on black issues and it’s all “racism is a thing of the past.”

It’s infuriating because black people have been accused of “copying” Kylie Jenner’s “look” – when she had dreads, it was cool and in style but Zendaya smelled like patchouli oil and weed. OH and Beyonce apparently “stole” her lip look when this trick has been plumping the hell out of hers with fillers and other substances. But black women are the ones copying her, right?

“Happy with the way God made me” my natural butt.

  6. Serenity says:

I’m astounded at how these ladies always and forever manage to stay in the spotlight. And people say they have no talent! How about their uncanny ability to snatch media attention and generate controversy any which way?? (That’s a talent too, dammit!)

  7. The Other Maria says:

She’s not comfortable in her skin, the layers of makeup and lip injections are proof of that, especially since she denies any work.

Kim, Khloe, and Kylie tan their skin, plump their lips, and let’s not even discuss their asses of doom (at least the first two)–they’re celebrated for acquiring features that black women are labeled whores and jezebels for 😒

    The criticism is legit.

I’m not familiar with all the tricks of photography, that she felt compelled to delete and then defend it, that shows says something.

I’m not sure if this constitutes black face, as a latina, it’s not my place to say otherwise. I will say this tho: when WoC voice concern and the person inciting said ire dismisses it, THAT is infuriating and very dismissive.

The skin sitch comment makes me side eye her.

She benefits from her white privilege while being applauded for the augmented features on her body that black women are condemned for….

Her choice to be obtuse to these issues all while dating a black man too, ugh, the entire family annoys me.

    /sorry for the long rant

    • Renee says:

      Thank you Maria!!!

That is why I CANNOT with this family…and the coverage they get. They benefit through their associations with black people by using them as foils to elevate themselves…I need to stop now, I don’t want my blood pressure to go up.

    • Michelle says:

@The other Maria – this is my favorite comment ever regarding this entire family. I really hate that people continue to applaud Kylie for buying herself a brand new face and body before her own was even done developing. With every new set of pictures from her latest pap strolls, her body seems to be continuing to miraculously become more curvy by the day as well. A week ago she had no butt whatsoever, now every new picture shows a bigger and bigger one. Same with her breasts. What is boils down to is that these actually women engage in some extremely racist behavior. They think being with black men is cool but they don’t respect black women and have made no attempt to hide the fact that they think they’re better than their current partners’ exes. I don’t understand how any of these women have fans, they’re all terrible.

      • Tifygodess24 says:

@michelle the problem is none of these women Will ever admit that they have had work done because they want everyone to believe they were just born this “perfect”. Anyone who dares to call them out is nothing more than a jealous h*ter in their book of course. Haha. And while it’s ridiculously obvious to anyone with a half a brain they have modified everything about themselves there are still large amounts of people who will continue to defend them and say they are all natural. Kylie is no different than the rest of them . She is doing all this work now so she can claim puberty was the reason for her change. But last I knew puberty didn’t make you look like a bratz doll with the empty head included.

    • AlmondJoy says:

“when WoC voice concern and the person inciting said ire dismisses it, THAT is infuriating and very dismissive.”

“She benefits from her white privilege while being applauded for the augmented features on her body that black women are condemned for….”

The Other Maria: Your comments are SO on point. I can’t think you enough for saying all of this.

    • Shambles says:

Beautifully and thoughtfully spoken, Maria. *applause* Kylie displays an egregious sense of entitlement, from material possessions to other cultures.

    • Asiyah says:

“I’m not sure if this constitutes black face, as a latina, it’s not my place to say otherwise. I will say this tho: when WoC voice concern and the person inciting said ire dismisses it, THAT is infuriating and very dismissive.”

      THERE IT IS! #AGREED

  8. Vampi says:

Happy the way God created you KyLIEzzle?? Hahaha and LULZ!!! Tell that to your lips and butt. And your sisters’ everything. Fake family is fake. And gross. So Tyga went to “church” with the fam, huh? Gross factor increases. Our Lady of Sorrows Church of the Almighty Dollar. Gah.

  9. Darkladi says:

I am NOT seeing blackface here. I’m seeing weird narcissistic photo shoot from an insecure little girl with too much time & money on her hands.

    • joy says:

She’s purple. Like a pixie or something. People are looking for things to get mad about.

      • OriginalTessa says:

Purple and gold with lightened eyes. She lightened her eyes, so what does that mean? Is she being racist towards blue eyed people? I don’t understand all this fuss. Black face is black face. This is clearly makeup for a cool photo effect.

      • erica says:

Since her idol Kim has a plastic surgery-created alien face all the time, I think that’s what Vylie was emulating here…alienface, not blackface. Actually, as a person with blue eyes I think the fake contacts are the most offensive part of the picture.

And the story says this is a shoot for a magazine. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this was just a personal shoot for Viley’s own personal instagraming/fame-hoing usage. She’s like an overgrown little girl who plays dress up all day and has her own personal team (paid Ktrash employees) for makeup and wardrobe. She truly does live on another planet.

    • I Choose Me says:

That’s what I’m seeing as well. Much ado about nothing.

  10. GiGi says:

Yeah – I’m pretty sensitive to racial issues of every shade… but this is NOT black face. At all. For awhile in the 90s – in the dawn of photoshop – fashion photogs were always playing with these kinds of effects, sometimes in an almost-Warholesque way, sometimes just like this – changing lighting, colors, etc. This shoot has that same feel. A rendering more than a photograph.

I think this family is ridiculous, but let’s save the outrage for when they’re actually horrible. We won’t have to wait long.

    • Erinn says:

She looks more purple/blue kind of alien like, if that makes sense? Everything is more of a galaxy color … so I’m going to save my outrage on this one.

  11. jujoki says:

Omg this family!!!! sometimes I can’t with them, seriously.
For a 17yo it makes me feel sad, she’s clearly copying Kim, and we can see PMK’s shadow trying to create a new and younger version of her golden girl. How on earth a mother would allow this?
    ARGH. I JUST CAN’T.

  12. Bridget says:

Those nails are terrible in that photo shoot. It looks like she found a bag of Lee Press-Ons

  13. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

When all else fails, haul out your fake religion as a defense. Ugh, these people.

  14. Dawn says:

Sure cause everyone wants a little seventeen year old to tell them when they need to calm down. I don’t care what pictures she took she is still an immature little entitle brat who has less education than a flea.

  15. MrsBPitt says:

These people are all over the celeb websites!!! They are nobodies, do nothings, and yet, every celeb website I go to, they are every other story! And, its never going to end…first Kim and her golden shower got famous, then Khloe and Kourtney and Mama Kriss…now the younger Jenner girls, pretty soon it will be the next generation of North West and her cousins….STOP THE INSANITY!!!!!! I think that I am banning any and all stories about the Kardashian/Jenner/West clan…From now on, I’m skipping their stories….unless, it’s somethng juicy, then I’ll click on it, or if they are wearing something totally inappropirate, then I’ll click on it, or…oh, nevermind, I’m addicted…My name is MrsBPitt, and I am a Kardashianaholic! (hangs head in shame)…

    • Bob Loblaw says:

I feel your pain, I keep trying to kick the Celebitchy habit, but I find myself clicking and giggling. At least my boycott of E! Is going strong.

  16. Jayna says:

I don’t think the photos are outrageous and definitely have the Avitar vibe to them.

But Kylle in most of her outfits these past few months is reminding me of the teenager who turned hooker looking, like a plastic stripper doll. the one that married that older bit actor who is in his 50s. Kyle, minus the massive boob job, is looking like her. The heavy makeup and clothes and plastic look and the blown-up lips is a shame at the age of 17. She has become just another narcissistic, superficial Kardashian. She might as well change her name from Jenner to Kardashian.

  17. lower-case deb says:

i’m more ‘offended’ by the fake nails, tbh. what on earth are those?
it makes my fingers surprisingly itchy as i look at them.

  18. Miss M says:

I had high hopes the Jwnner girls would have a better future/outcome. All these women (rob doesn’t count in their world) came from 3 (?) different fathers and their behaviora (lack of self steem and desperation for fame) are the same. The only common denominator is the mother…

  19. Lucy says:

Zendaya has more class in her pinkie than all the K family together (and I’m not precisely talking about fashion choices). That’s all I got.

    • aang says:

She could have said “what blackface, she looks like an alien” But it seems like she kind of painted herself into a corner and must now be in line with the internet police who roll around looking for the slightest misstep that they can turn into a controversy.

  20. Laura says:

Looks nothing like her to me, but hey.

I think it’s massively over sensitive to be talking about blackface BUT this divvy doesn’t help herself does she?

What hasn’t been mentioned here was that there was a comment on Instagram after she posted these pics to the effect of “when black women have blonde hair no one accuses them of wanting to be white” and she liked it.

  21. jenn12 says:

That was a good point about her part still being white. I didn’t notice that and thought it was supposed to be an alien look. Who the hell is her stylist, writing like that? Please don’t tell me it’s an adult. And by the way, Ks/Js, whether you date or marry African-Americans, you still need to be a hell of a lot more sensitive than you are. You don’t get some kind of implied pass.

  22. Crumpet says:

Everyone calm down? That is what my 17 year old says when he knows he has screwed up big time.

  23. Mzizkrizten says:

It does not look like blackface to me. At all. She looks like an alien. So call the alien protection people, she is obviously discriminating and making fun of alien races.

    • lower-case deb says:

the Vogons are triple checking the claims documents as we speak, i’m sure.

  24. Dirty Martini says:

Its not black face in the context that it was accused. It’s playing around with makeup and lighting. This continuous internet obsession with policing the world and calling people out on the smallest of misperceived missteps really must stop. It’s nuts.

I have never really been a Team Kardashian on anything….but on this, yeah, leave the kid alone. Nothing there but a stylized picture.

  25. kri says:

When I saw this, I thought she looked silvery grey. Like an alien. Tbh, it doesn’t look like blackface. She has what I call “active stupid face” as do all the Kardashian harpies. It is her comment about calming down that got me. Aside from the little kids in this family, the rest of them are venal, thoughtless, greedy, and stupid. If they put even a smidge of effort into educating themselves that they do into hair and makeup, they would be so much better off. The sad thing is, they care for nothing except their looks/money/fame.

  26. FingerBinger says:

Kylie is starting to look like Lindsay Lohan. Btw I can’t stand these people but that was not blackface. Just more faux outrage on social media.

  27. Ari says:

Definitely not blackface and I was so pee’d off that I had to defend a kardashian spawn yesterday on facebook about this lol

  28. Talie says:

I find it more fascinating that Zendaya has now been painted into a corner by social media police because she spoke out previously.

  29. Sally J. Freedman says:

I actually think she looks like Fergie here. ..

  30. Zigggy says:

I think the pics are kinda cool. Everybody is so dang sensitive.

  31. word says:

Did she need to show up for that photoshoot? They could have done it all with CGI.

Why did they do that to her hands? Are they supposed to look like Alien hands?

    • Hotpockets says:

I was waiting to see if anyone mentioned the HANDS. They are huge and monster like, that freaks me out more than anything in these pictures.

    • Zigggy says:

Ohmygod- the HANDS! I didn’t even notice!

  32. Livealot says:

I think she looks white and gold

  33. ashley says:

her scalp probably looks lighter than her skin bc it is – fake tan y’all

  34. SnowGlow says:

The second picture with her face half covered she kinda looks like Lorde.

  35. k says:

This is like #TheDress all over again. I don’t see that skin colour as anything other than purple, but I can’t knock the people who truly do see it as black skin. The fact that so many people are seeing it that way means that the Kardashians/Jenners should have just apologized and taken it down. It’s not worth the offense, even if they did not intend to be racist. Black women go through enough as it is.

  36. Iheartgossip says:

Another fake story brought to you by their Pimp of a Mother. Fake. Fake. Fake. PMK put their ‘fans’ up to all the ‘fake outrage’ to garner more attention for Baby Cakes Ho-dee-ho

  37. Katarina says:

So silly. People are overacting. She looks blue not black lol.

  38. Jag says:

I don’t like her as a person, but those pictures are really cool, in my opinion. I’ll probably take some flack for saying that, but the effect of it is really neat! I don’t see her trying to do black face – which she probably did for the controversy – but instead an alien sparkly look. Maybe I just grew up with too much original Star Trek and all the really gorgeous, differently-skinned alien ladies. 🙂

  39. mootwo says:

I don’t see blackface. The coloring/sheen is nice and futuristic. however, the contouring that pared down her nose and her puffed up lips is what takes away from gorgeousness of the photo because those fake parts are what stands out.

  40. Trillion says:

It’s entirely possible that the K Klan were the ones who incited the “blackface” complaints in the first place, just to bait some klicks.

    • me says:

I wouldn’t put it past them. They are betting on Kylie to be the next Kim. They need people to keep talking about her until she turns 18 and really becomes Kim.

  41. jwoolman says:

Zendaya’s first reaction was correct- it’s an alien avatar type of effect, all lighting and photog tricks. Of all the things wrong with the Kardashians, probably that kind of racism isn’t one of them. Richism, maybe….

I think Kylie’s outfit in the other pics looks nice on her. That’s my random act of kindness for the day.

  42. Bob Loblaw says:

This is just like that stupid dress because she looks black not blue to me. She looks so obviously black in that first photo that I’m suprised she posted it and that other people can’t see how insensitive it is for her to choose that particular skin tone. She is much more obviously blue in the second cropped shot. Clearly I need an eye exam.

  43. serena says:

Those lips… I can’t even looks at them..
She just looks like an alien fish.

  44. Veronica says:

Hmmm, I can see where the styling might have raised some hackles, but I do think it may be result of the black light on her lightly tanned skin tone. Not the wisest styling decision, though.

More to the point is a shame at how much work she’s had done by seventeen. SEVENTEEN. At that point, your features haven’t even settled yet!

  45. Anna says:

I think the “white scalp evidence” is really reaching. There are clearly white/highlighted spots on the rest of her face. Stuff like this is why I got off Twitter. I thought it would be a really interesting way to keep up with the world but holy crap do people nitpick.
