Kim Sears’ Jenny Packham wedding gown: lovely, perfect or unflattering?

wenn22377445

Last week, I did a preview of Andy Murray and Kim Sears’ wedding, and here are the photos from the Saturday service. As I theorized, Andy and Kim did not “sell” their wedding photos to a magazine because they happily posed for photos after their wedding service, outside of Dunblane Cathedral in Scotland. Andy wore a kilt and he showed off his too-short haircut. I wonder if Kim was pissed at him for getting his haircut so close to their wedding.

As for Kim’s wedding gown… there’s some good news and some bad news. Good news: Kim is a lovely woman and she looked SO happy on her wedding day. A joyful, happy bride elevates a questionable gown. And now for the bad news: this was not the best gown. It’s Jenny Packham. The skirt was too poufy, the beaded sleeves were a hot mess, the bust is too “heavy” (too much fabric, too much ruching) and I don’t understand the idea behind the “cutout” backless thing for a wedding gown. You know what? I bet everyone asked Kim if she was already knocked up, because that’s the effect of this dress. It makes this whole thing look like a shotgun wedding.

Something else I don’t understand: Kim is known for having great hair. Like, she ALWAYS looks blowout-perfect, in a way that Duchess Kate could only dream of. Why then did Kim decide to wear her perfect hair half-back, with an excessive headpiece and droopy veil? Know your best assets, girl!

Anyway, congrats to Kim and Andy. They both looked so happy, I almost feel like a bad person for bitching about the gown. (Almost.)

  1. LAK says:

I love a wedding parade and they both looked so happy. And a man in a kilt is always welcome…. 😉

    My 2 snarky things were

    1. the grooms’ ties….seriously?!

    2. That wedding dress was designed with a taller person in mind because it simultaneously made her look super short (hadn’t realised how short she is) considering she was wearing Jimmy Choo 4inch heels, made her look bigger and altogether matronly which is a shame. It’s a case of a person working against their own body proportions and I hope this wasn’t custom because if it is, shame on the designer for not adapting it to fit Kim’s proportions.

    • burnsie says:

I agree the dress makes her look short, but I don’t think she’s short full stop. Google says she’s 5’8

      • p says:

Well… google says Kate is 5’9″ too! LOL! not!

      • Charlie says:

Well, he’s 1,9 m tall, so she looks short next to him, but she looks shorter than 1,73.

They have been together since the were 17, I think. It’s really sweet that they are still together.

      • LAK says:

According to his own twitter he is 187.5 cm which puts him at approx 6ft 2in. Considering she’s in 4inch heels, she should stand almost as tall as him IF her bare foot height is 5ft 8in (173cm).

    • bluhare says:

I totally agree, LAK. I saw those wedding photos and wondered what the hell she was thinking. She’s usually pretty well turned out too.

But I do agree about men in kilts. If I had to get married again, I’d ask Mr. bluhare to wear one. LOL, who am I kidding? The odds of getting Mr. bluhare in a kilt are about the same as me getting into a size 2.

    • Tracy says:

Loved the groom’s tie. The dress looked just too heavy and like it was pulling down. Meh.

  2. Olenna says:

Congrats to the newlyweds! They do look so happy. But, the gown and hair…Kaiser, you’ve said it all. Her stylist must have been off duty that day.

    • Kiddo says:

I have no idea who these people are, but they do look genuinely happy and not playing to cameras.

      • Solanaceae (Nighty) says:

        He’s a tennis player champion… apparently

      • Sixer says:

Ha, Kiddo. More than half of the people written about here I know only because they are written about here!

      • Kiddo says:

Okay, this explains why I don’t know.

      • Franca says:

He’s one of the best tennis players on the circuit.

      • Kiddo says:

@Sixer, yep, that happens a lot to me, too.

      • bluhare says:

LOL you guys! I don’t know who half the people written about either. I did know who Andy Murray is, though. You can’t be British and not know who he is!

      • Olenna says:

He won Wimbledon a couple of years ago. I only know of her because the DM loves to showcase her blow-outs and handbags at the games. I’ve read she has her own career, though, as an artist.

      • Lisa says:

She paints portraits of people’s pets, or at least she did. I don’t know if she’s doing much of that these days; last I saw she wasn’t taking new commissions. Her work seems good enough in a technical sense, but it’s definitely not my taste. She’s at KimSears (dot) com

      • Lady D says:

What Sixer said. At least 2-3 times a week there is someone I don’t have a clue about on this site.

  3. spring says:

It looks like three different dress designs in one dress. Its a shame JP dose the most beautiful dresses(normally). But she dose look very happy thats the main thing (right).

    • Question everything says:

Would you dare to tell your neighbour that her hair looked ugly at her wedding and that her gown wasn’t a hit either?
It is HER day. Trashing it is awful.

  4. Zandy says:

I think the most important thing is that the bride loved her dress, which she did so i am going for lovely and perfect! Some great pics at Daily Mail show how the little town of Dunblane all came together and celebrated with Andy and Kim! The whole town was decorated for their wedding! Lovely. Congrats to them 🎉💕💍

    • Franca says:

I think that’s weird to be honest. They’re not royals or anything, why is the whole town there? Maybe it’s a British thing, but we don’t do that sort of thing here.

      • Lara says:

I’m not sure if you know the history of Dunblane but there was a horrendous school shooting there many years ago – at Andy’s school actually and he was there on the day. The way I see it this is their chance to be remembered for something joyful instead of something horrible (no snark intended at all in this post to you!)

      • Blanca says:

I used to work in Dunblane and he is an absolute hero there! Everyone loves him. It’s a lovely little town.

    • Sofia says:

It was just beautiful the way Dunblane came together to support Kim and Andy. It’s a small town touched by incredible tragedy and they demonstrated what a great community they are.
Kim and Andy look just lovely and so happy. Gorgeous!

      • Senaber says:

I had to google Dunblane because I had no idea about that horrific massacre. Now I can’t even snark. I’m really happy for them and happy for Dunblane’s celebration as well. I hope he always makes them proud.

      • Sixer says:

Murray was actually present during the massacre. Here he is, talking about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJb_NvHlzEI.

All three Murrays, but particularly Judy, spend time in Dunblane, encouraging sports. Andy paid for a lot of facilities for the school. They get a lot of love back from the town, and deservedly so.

    • Josephine says:

I agree. I don’t care for the dress, but every bride should have the dress they want, and they feel good in. Our collective opinions of the dress just don’t matter.

  5. Vava says:

I love his kilt. They look very happy and that’s the important thing.

JP blew it with this design.

  6. Mop top says:

Well, she does look happy, so that’s good. But that dress is just awful, and her hair! It looks like she just got through working out and threw a headband in to go run some errands. And she’s usually so put together; I just don’t know what went wrong.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Am I supposed to know who these people are?

I love a real Scottish man in a kilt (as opposed to this wacko my friend married who just decided he wanted to wear a kilt.)

    • **sighs** says:

      He’s the tennis guy.

      That’s all I know.

    • Franca says:

He’s a huge sportstar. I mean HUGE. I’m really surprised people haven’t heard of him.

      • Charlie says:

I’m shocked people don’t know him! I mean , I would get if people didn’t know, I don’t know, Čilić or Berdych, but Đoković, Nadal, Fereder and Murray? Everyone know them.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, don’t go by me. I don’t know many sports figures. Sorry. And thank you both for telling me.

Is she anyone other than his girlfriend? That came out wrong. I mean, she’s so pretty, she might be a model or actor or something? Or she could be a brain surgeon, GNAT, so just shut up…

      • Franca says:

GNAT, I’m sorry if that came out rude, I didn’t mean it.

I think she’s an artist of some sort, but I’m not really familiar with her. She is very pretty, yes.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

No, no, not rude at all. I just meant I don’t know any sports figures, so don’t think nobody knows who he is just because I don’t. If you understood that – I got lost in the woods of my words. Lol

    • bluhare says:

He was the first British tennis player to win the Men’s at Wimbledon in over 70 years I think it was. The first time he played in the final he lost to Federer and cried. He had the hopes of Britain on his shoulders. There were screens outside and people were sitting on the Murray Mound. I remember talking to Amanda here about it at the time. She was there.

He played the finals again the next year and won. It was huge in Britain.

    • MtnRunnerSourD'oh says:

It’s six degrees of Celebitchy. I don’t watch tennis and only know who Andy is because he was mentioned on the Hiddles post about bringing JA to Wimbledon back in 2013.

I’ve always liked a Scot in a kilt. That tie needs to go tho’. She’s pretty, but probably would have done better with a less poufy dress.

  8. Fasterpussycat says:

He is the celebrated son of that town. It’s a small place which suffered a horrific tragedy in (I think) the ’90s when a lunatic broke into a school and shot 16 small children dead. Andy Murray has meant that Dunblane is known in the minds of the British public for more than that massacre and the people there love him, so I can see why they came.

    • LAK says:

That massacre is why we had a complete overhaul of the gun control laws in this country. Best result and lesson from the massacre.

      • Lucky Charm says:

At least you had the intelligence to do that. We’ve had several mass shootings and still nothing has changed. I was sure that after the Sandy Hook school massacre the U.S. would finally pass gun control legislation, but our “gun rights activists” refuse to. I’m glad that Dunblane has something happy to celebrate. I’m sure the whole town was thrilled. Weddings are a wonderful celebration!

  9. Dawn says:

Her dress is fine and they look happy so congrats to them!

    • Crumpet says:

I agree that her dress is fine. Fashions are different the world over. Not everyone needs to be a Hollywood clone.

    • Sofacat says:

Couldn’t agree with you more! They look so completely happy. Bitching about her dress is just silly.

      • Question everything says:

        @ Sofacat

I so agree with you. Bitching about any bride’s dress is nasty.
Most people here wouldn’t dare to tell their neighbours that their wedding dress looked ugly. But here people just trash the wedding of this couple who are clearly in love and got married for all the right reasons …

They aren’t the Kardashians. Murray and Sears never sold their life to a reality tv show.

  10. bettyrose says:

No idea who they are but they look very happy. As for the dress, that’s what wedding dresses used to look like. If you grew up in the 80s (which this bride clearly did not) everyone from John Hughes to Disney to Princess Di taught you that wedding dresses are big poofy ordeals.

  11. Tig says:

I second the comment posted above- the bride clearly loved it, and that’s what counts. I love a big flared skirt, so that was a plus for me. Agreed all the work on the shoulders was a bit overkill.

    • Livvers says:

I think it was great for a Scottish wedding–high-waisted, flowy, with sleeves, and filigree-esque detailing. That said, I think the objections to the obtrusiveness of the decoration is apt, and I think it would have been much more elegant done in embroidery and seed pearls–or Scottish freshwater pearls!

  12. kri says:

Well….too much fabric, for sure. But look how happy!! That is sweet. And I love, love, love a man in a kilt. Mazel, kids.

  13. dr mantis toboggan says:

That’s a terrible dress. Always love a man in a kilt

  14. dimsumum says:

From the waist up it looked like Alexis Carrington Colby wedding gown. Quite 80’s.

For many of us, weddings, including dress, program, people participating in the wedding (You must have your cousin as a bridesmaid! Your Aunt, my sister, would never forgive me!) are often done for other people’s benefit. It’s nice they both looked so joyful on their wedding day – may their marriage be as happy.

  15. TennisFan says:

Andy Murray’s hair looked great! I think Kim finally got her wish & Andy got a hair cut for the wedding!

  16. lisa2 says:

I like his wedding attire more than her’s.. love that tie too.. just wish it was a darker blue.. but it is hard to do something different in men’s fashion. That tie is a nice touch.

congrats to the obviously happy couple.

  17. Lia says:

They both look great. Her gown is lovely….. no boobs hanging out, or a slit in the skirt up to her crotch, or so tight one could see every pimple on her arse…. A bride who puts on a beautiful gown and marries the man she loves is perfectly lovely, no matter whether anybody else likes the gown or not. Some will love her dress, others will not. I’m sure she couldn’t care less what any of us think 🙂

  18. perplexed says:

The dress looks like something a British lady would wear, I think. I could be wrong.

It doesn’t look bad to me, but then I figure as long as the dress isn’t exceedingly tacky for this kind of day, it’s all good. Most white wedding dresses look the same to me on slim people (that’s not a slam on slim people — I just wouldn’t ever be able to tell this lady is pregnant. She doesn’t have a stomach. I would have assumed she simply didn’t want to wear a dress as tight as Kim Kardashian might).

  19. MrsBPitt says:

THIS MAN STOLE JADEN SMITH’S STYLE!!!!!!! lol

  20. Isabelle says:

Beautiful dress & like the sleeve trend. DO agree with other posters, its made for a taller person. You would think she could have got it altered much better?

    • boredblond says:

I like the sleeve beading, but think long fitted sleeves would’ve been better..the length is odd..I have no idea who they are, but think they look lovely and genuine.

  21. The Original Mia says:

I would have liked the dress more without those sleeves. Otherwise, it’s very pretty.

  22. anne_000 says:

I read something about a photographer who was taking photos of them at their rehearsal who fell and later died. Not such a good omen to their marriage.

  23. Boringlittletit says:

I do not like the dress at all but her hair looks lovely, I’m not sure what you’re on about. That ‘droopy’ veil is a modern style which I much prefer to the full head veils.

For me, everything from the head up is beautiful. Everything from the head down…well, as long as she loved it, hey?

  24. Betti says:

Photo’s are fab and they so happy and in love – all the best to both of you for your future.

Note to the Cumberbatches – THIS is how you do a celebrity wedding and how a couple in love should behave.

  25. racer says:

I love a wedding dress that’s not trendy or shows too much skin. They look happy!

  26. lisa says:

i love that she looks so happy and that there are sleeves

  27. jane says:

Wow, very unflattering dress. Congrats to them.

  28. Cali says:

Perhaps her belt was worn upside down? It may have helped the bustline worn the other way. As for Andy’s mum’s hat, did anyone else notice it resembled an unrolled rubber?

  29. KBeth says:

I don’t love the dress, very bland. She is super cute.

  30. Adele Dazeem says:

Well, I’ll say one positive thing about Kim’s wedding dress – at least it’s NOT strapless. I’m all for a bit of sleeve in a wedding dress and personally hate the strapless wedding dress look. But I’m afraid that’s the only positive thing I can say about Kim’s dress. To me, it just missed the mark.

Mind you, have you seen her bridesmaids outfits? If you think her wedding dress is not the best, her bridesmaids dresses were hideous. Awful cut, colour and incredibly out-dated. But that’s just my opinion and I’m sure Kim doesn’t give a hoot about what we think and nor should she.

Congratulations to them and I hope they have a long & happy marriage.

  31. lila fowler says:

    RIP his career.

  32. Question everything says:

I don’t like this article’s snarky bitchy touch.

    1. It is Kim Sears’ and Andy Murray’s wedding. The only thing that matters is that THEY like it. Our opinion doesn’t matter.

    2. This is not some famous-for-being-famous Kardashian wedding. I think it is totally fair to comment and criticise the Kardashian’s clothes because they decided to turn their life into a TV reality show. But Sears and Murray don’t sell their life to TV. So please treat them accordingly.

Would you tell your neighbour that her hair looked ugly at her wedding and that her gown wasn’t a hit either?
