Sony Hack: Tom Hiddleston loosely attached to play Robert the Bruce?

FFN_BAFTA_Arrivals_CHP_020815_51649145

I tend to think Tom Hiddleston is going to hit full “Cumberbatch” later this year, when he shows his range in three films that will all be released within a three-month period. Those films? Crimson Peak, High Rise and I Saw the Light. I tend to think ISTL will be of particular interest for potential awards-bait, depending on the reviews and whether Hiddles is seen as doing a particularly stellar job. What’s my point? That Hiddles is going to find himself in demand, even more so than he is already. Right now, I would say Hiddles is on the cusp – we’ll see how this year’s awards season goes, but it’s very likely that Hollywood will be taking greater notice of Tom in the months to come.

In the meantime, Tom is apparently attached (loosely attached?) to a sequel to Mel Gibson’s Braveheart. It doesn’t seem like Gibson has much to do with this film, currently called Lion Rampant. But according to the Sony Hack documents (now on Wikileaks), Tom is attached to play the lead, Robert the Bruce, in the “unofficial sequel to Braveheart.”

Thor actor Tom Hiddleston looks set to star in the highly-anticipated sequel to Mel Gibson’s 1995 classic Braveheart. According to emails exposed by WikiLeaks, the 34-year-old will take on the role of Scotland’s warrior king Robert the Bruce in the upcoming film, entitled Lion Rampant. Directed by David Mackenzie, the movie will be shot in Scotland and will also potentiality feature Jack O’Connell and Emma Stone.

Lion Rampant – described as the ‘unofficial sequel to Braveheart’ – is reportedly being made by Working Title, the British company behind blockbusters such as Four Weddings And A Funeral. Details of the highly-anticipated film were revealed when an email exchange between former head of Sony Entertainment Amy Pascal and Rich Klubeck, a senior partner in a leading American talent agency, were published. In the messages, he states that he is ‘pleased to share’ details of the Lion Rampant project. He also is said to specifically mention Hiddleston by name in connection with the role of Robert the Bruce.

In a subsequent email exchange between Ms Pascal and Eric Fellner – a Working Title producer, even more details about the film were revealed.

‘It is the story that follows on in history from Braveheart,’ he explained in one message. ‘It is an epic tale of action and romance.’

Mr Fellner then appeared to confirm Hiddleston and O’Connell’s roles in the film, however, hinted that Stone was not yet fully on board with the project. Nevertheless, he seemed determined to persuade the actress to sign up to the project: ‘We are out to get Emma Stone.’

If Lion Rampant does go ahead, the film will tell the tale of Robert the Bruce, who fought a series of wars with the English before leading his country to victory in the Wars Of Scottish Independence. Neither Hiddleston’s agent nor his manager were available for comment.

[From The Daily Mail]

The vibe I get is that this is more like “I want a pony” dream-casting for a project that hasn’t even been greenlighted. I checked IMDB – there’s no page or mention of Lion Rampant, and Emma Stone, Tommy Hiddleston and Jack O’Connell are not in any way officially connected to this film. And yes, it doesn’t seem like something Hiddleston should do – I know Braveheart was an Oscar-winning film and everything, but no one wants or needs a sequel.

  1. Snazzy says:

The story of Robert the Bruce is very compelling – I think it would make an excellent stand alone film ( no need to follow Braveheart). As for Hiddles as Bruce? Why not …

    • Sarah says:

I agree. The Bruce is an intriguing character and if done right, this could be and excellent movie.

  2. aims says:

The man knows how to wear the hell out of a tux. I’m happy the good things are happening for Tom, but on a purely selfish reason I want him to remain my secret.

  3. Izzy says:

Honestly, curiosity got the best of me and I looked through the Wikileaks files at some of the Sony emails… and most of them read like “I want a pony” or “I want a unicorn” emails. Really, no wonder they’re all turned around over there. But if it’s not even on IMdb, then I’d say Tom Hiddleston isn’t even signed on officially yet, or the movie doesn’t have financing, or both.

    • Crocuta says:

I checked too and it’s said they doubt he’d take the role anyway, because he seemed to them as somebody who’d play a part like this for real, not for laughs (which is their plan, it seems).

      • et alors says:

@Crocuta, that email was referring to the Sacha Baron Cohen movie, Grimsby.

      • Crocuta says:

@et alors: Huh. You are correct. I don’t know why I thought Sacha is in this film and that that mail was about RtB. Well, the good news is they’re not going to make a joke out of it (Hiddles or no Hiddles).

  4. Damn says:

Since when is Emma Stone such a highly regarded actress?
Her acting isn’t that good and starring in a historic movie doesn’t fit her persona. Can she do accents?

  5. Chaucer says:

I had no idea how badly I wanted this to happen. But as a Scot, I will riot if Emma Stone has any part of this. She can take her lisp elsewhere!

    • Crocuta says:

Question because you’re a Scot: Would it be a problem for people in Scotland that the main character isn’t played by a Scottish actor? (I know Hiddleston’s father is a Scot, but that still only makes him half-Scot.) I am just wondering because of that I Saw The Light uproar, could it happen here too?

      • A. Key says:

Mel Gibson played William Wallace, come on.

      • Chaucer says:

I can only answer your question based off my family, as I was born in Scotland and moved to the states as a small child. IMO, I don’t care. My grandfather would be unhappy for sure, but I can’t speak for those currently living in Scotland. I can’t imagine it would be spectacularly received.

If I got to cast a Scottish actor, I would opt for Iain Glen. Otherwise, hiddles or fassy would be my pick.

      • MtnRunner says:

Tom’s dad is Scottish and he is good at impressions. I have no doubt he’ll nail the accent.

  6. A. Key says:

I want a film about Robert the Bruce!!!!

But maybe not with Hiddleston playing him.

    • icerose says:

Having seen him in Coriolanus there is no doubt he can manage the passion and the physicality and the accent should be a walk in the park. Sadly I really doubt it will happen but it would be great if it did.
I just wonder how picky he is being re offers.
My impression is he is gong for as much diversity as possible to show of his range and avoid type casting.
Hoping all these films show up at Toronto but they still might appear at Cannes in directors week.

      • MtnRunner says:

I’d be happy seeing Tom in a kilt and giving us his best brogue. I don’t care who he’s playing.

    • seesittellsit says:

Why not? Hiddles is half-Scottish on his father’s side and he LOOKS it.

      • A.Key says:

I just can’t picture it. I’m seeing a younger-version-of-Russell-Crowe type for the part, not Hiddleston.

  7. Browniecakes says:

More Tom please. Or get me a Tom Hiddleston type.

    • A. Key says:

      Google JJ Feild

      • Ava says:

Sorry IMAO JJ is a no….he just doesn’t have “it” don’t see it all all.

      • Freshmeat says:

Oh, I like JJ in AMC’s TURN, He’s the reason I started watching. The shows good on its own though.

      • A. Key says:

Of course I’m watching Turn 😉

But whether you love JJ or not, you can’t deny the obvious physical resemblance between the two, which is why I mentioned him.

      • Freshmeat says:

I get it. Tom’s the reason I got into JJ. A while ago was watching Centurion and I was like is that TH? Looked it up and discovered JJ. I’m easy..Lol!

      • alwaysbefrank6499@yahoo.com says:

        I loved him in Austenland.

  8. someone says:

Am I the only one who finds Tom Hiddleston sexier with his long Loki hair? Not that he’s in any way bad without it…

  9. Lilacflowers says:

Going “full Cumberbatch” and showing range contradict one another. That said, if Tom is in awards contention next winter, I hope he conducts himself as he has done through recent theater awards season – quietly, graciously, and with dignity.

As for Robert the Bruce, he’s done the medieval warrior prince bit and might want to try something else. On the other hand – Tom in a kilt! But those emails are old and I don’t think this is happening. Lately, Tom has been announcing his own projects and rumors have tended to be false

    • icerose says:

Showing diversity yes but certainly not in the context of going full Cumberbatch. The Hollow Crown was Shakespeare and limited by a TV budget.I think this film would have had more action orientation and a wider audience -but we will probably never know
I really think he is way beyond Cumby mode -they have very different personalities, intelligence and responses. He may play the bouncing puppy but never the entitled grouch.

@Mia4S I agree -everyone was predicting great things on Assange and it was pretty much panned and with all his money and PR machine Wienstein could not get him and OSCAR.
Having said that Hiddles achieved more with his portrayal of Loki than Benny did with Khan.

      • MtnRunner says:

I really can’t see him shilling his private life for an Oscar nor do I expect the grumpy or tipsy red carpet behavior either. They are different personalities.

    • TotallyBiased says:

++ some really large number with lots of zeroes!
So much agreement with both of you, lilacflowers and icerose. The diversity is certainly displays different decisions than BC made, and I have high hopes for a classy if occasionally puppy-ish awards season should he be up for honours (I have hopes but no expectations.)
And yes, Loki was so much more than Khan, but we must allow that Tom had several movies and much better writing/directing in his favour 😉
Unfortunately, until/if Tom is involved in another blockbuster, he will be Loki when referenced even after he succeeds at winning awards!

      • icerose says:

Yes but he took the role of Loki and ran with it through three films and and pretty much saved Thor 2

      • P'enny says:

I think JJ Abrams is a better writer and director than any of the guys involved in Marvel. [including Ken Branagh, in the writing dept :-p] Plus, Khan was a character that has been developed and well thought around in previous Star Trek adaptations and books.

I don’t think Khan or Loki are in anyway comparable and i don’t want another fan-war where it’s not necessary.

      • icerose says:

@penny I have no real opinions on who were the best writers or directors as I do not watch Star Wars -but it terms of career building I think Tom brought something to the role which kick started his career in a big way and has stayed with him in a way not many villains have managed recently.

      • Josa says:

JJ Abram as a better writer/director is a matter of opinion. IMO, he isn’t. I for one thought Star Trek II is very boring, so much so that it killed my appetite for the franchise. Doubtful I will go see another ST in the future. IMO, Abrams’ best works were still his earlier TV series. Alias and Felicity were top notch, Lost was great for at least 3 seasons.

      • TotallyBiased says:

@Josa–exactly! STID is *still* a bad taste in the back of my mental mouth!
Having said that–I can’t wait to see SW 7

    • Josa says:

Full Cumberbatch? Why not aim higher for a Full Fassender 😉 Oscar nominated, diverse roles, high brow projects and blockbusters, many many projects this year and the years to come, always in demand.

      • icerose says:

Fassy is a great role model in terms of work and a better role mode in terms of career moves .I think think full Cumbybunch refers to his Oscar campaign

      • Josa says:

All the more for Full Fassender and his Oscar campaign. I know he shrilled for Shame and didn’t get nominated. But he didn’t lift a finger and got nominated for 12YAS, that’s something to aim for.

      • MtnRunner says:

Full Fassy would get my approval. And if it also means a bit of nudity, two thumbs up.

    • Lilacflowers says:

“Full Cumberbatch” was brought up in the context of range and I have very strong opinions on that issue.

  10. Mia4S says:

Considering Amy’s been kicked to the curb I wouldn’t take any of these so called projects as anything but pipe dreams. The emails are old news in Hollywood terms.

But if you want a great laugh check out their wish list for “Pa” in Little House of the Prairie. Christian Bale was on it! Bale is Pa! I need this movie to happen, LOL!

Oh and majorly bad luck to start talking about a break out year for your boy before it happens. Remember all the stories post-Trek that Cumberbatch was supposed to hit with 5th Estate (yikes) and he had to wait? One of those movies bombs, gets bumped, or sucks and suddenly it’s “who? Oh yeah, Loki”.

  11. TotallyBiased says:

So I found this United Talent ‘proposal’ fascinating. The “Lion Rampant” script (with a different scriptwriter credited) has been kicking around Mackenzie’s Sigma Films for at least four years. UTA reps Mackenzie in the US, and here you have this project with him as scripter AND director. Mackenzie has a great relationship with O’Connell, pretty much gave him his start with Sigma, so that name makes sense.
But Hiddleston? I’d be surprised if they had even spoken with his management at that point.
Surprised they didn’t go with Ewan McGregor or Benedict Cumberbatch, as UTA reps both of them in the US. But then again, nobody replies to emails about Tom asking “who’s that?” (Poor BC)

Finally, the idea that this is a sequel is definitely Hollywood Hyperbole. It’s like saying a movie about Henry V/Agincourt is a sequel to William the Conqueror/Battle of Hastings!

    • P'enny says:

      eerm

ok, my British history is a bit sketchy but William Wallace and Robert the Bruce were alive in the same time period, and Robert the Bruce carried on the fight against Edward the !st.

Henry V and William the Conqueror were definitely a century or two more apart.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Hey, thanks for the info. I read up a bit and see your point–still think it is inaccurate to call it a sequel simply because of historical timing (and some would argue that WIlliam is used to justify Henry.) But there is certainly a point to be made that WW and The Bruce were contemporaries.

    • et alors says:

TotallyBiased, I agree with you that using the term “sequel” is incorrect. It’s not Braveheart 2; it’s a movie that follows, historically, the events presented in Braveheart. I don’t recall anything in the few emails related to this project that refers to it as a sequel. I think it was just the Daily Fail latching on to the Braveheart mention and putting their own spin on it.

    • Waitwhat says:

Totally agree that “sequel” is the wrong term @TotallyBiased – my own thoughts were that was like saying The King’s Speech was a sequel to W.E. RtB fought Edward I briefly, but moreso Edward II (history major here), and also fought with the English at points, too (depending on who could help him become king of Scotland at any given time). It would actually be an even more interesting and complex character if written correctly. Interesting about the UTA link. It does have Working Title behind it now, and Tom started following them on Twitter last fall, right around the time these emails were written. Was also mentioned in a Collider interview with David Mackenzie last August.

  12. Freshmeat says:

If we were wishing for what type of project he should do next, I wish for a screwball comedy. I mean Steve n’ Wendy on a road trip.

  13. et alors says:

Off-topic but Hiddleston-related: There’s a new Jaguar commercial featuring Tom and Nicholas Hoult tweeted by Jaguar MENA yesterday with seemingly little fanfare.

    https://twitter.com/JaguarMENA/status/594853941873020928

    • P'enny says:

this one seems under the radar, i am not a fan of it to be honest.

    • TotallyBiased says:

I’m wondering if it was tailored for the audience? Our man Hiddles is a bit OTT. I snickered. I love it anyway (OF COURSE!) Plus TWH stroking big black fanged beastie cats! What’s not to love? 🙂

      • Waitwhat says:

Jaguar USA has hinted they might release one too; maybe it will be longer like the other ones (this one’s only 30 seconds).

    • Lilacflowers says:

Meow! Is he feeding Ben Kingsley’s bowtie from the first one to the cat? He’s wearing the same suit as he did in the first one.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Always glad to see Tom, but…. This one left me with a big “Meh….”

      • Lilacflowers says:

It just seemed patched together. It was more about cars than pushing the story.

But did he feed Ben Kingsley to the cat?

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I think he does! But yeah, it does feel very thrown together. Not enough in this to be really interesting. What a waste!

    • et alors says:

I don’t hate it, but the Art of Villainy was a lot better. That ad was tongue-in-cheek but sexy, whereas this is maybe too rushed and obvious?

    • icerose says:

well at least they cannot pull it because of his driving but it comes up very dark and has very little actual Tom.

  14. Josa says:

There are actually quite a bit of tweets and instagrams from The Night Manager set last week. One is by AMC’s Kristin Jones on her instagram. Other stuffs can be found on the #nightmanager tag on Twitter. https://instagram.com/p/2AqToITWiv/?taken-by=kikibeach

    • P'enny says:

i wish BBC would tweet more as promised, or istratweet or what they call it. Night Manager is looking really interesting.

    • Waitwhat says:

Here’s one from today by someone in Marrakech: http://instagram.com/p/2WRCj6oX7e/

    • Lilacflowers says:

BBC seems distracted by Doctor Who and Luther filming. Not that I’m complaining about all the pictures of Idris on Instagram but they did promise TNM pictures and there have been very few.

  15. Abby_J says:

I’m just here to say that I’ve missed the Tommy threads, and he is gorgeous.

I bet this doesn’t happen, but I am all for Hiddles in a kilt, all day, any day.

  16. Sopha says:

The wikileaks pages are full of potential movies where they throw around star names that they want to cast or have had meetings with. I am not sure why this one got picked up as news and others didn’t. As far as I can tell Amy Pascal routinely developed dream lists of stars for movies that were not fully developed.

  17. Josa says:

Tom’s picture in GQ UK June issue. Wonder if I can post this link here:
    http://ww1.sinaimg.cn/large/6e14d388jw1erv4pqp3f8j21s72aj4en.jpg

    • MtnRunner says:

Torrilla posted a page from it today.

In other news, US Magazine is casually shipping Tom and Elizabeth Olsen. The insider info sounds like something cooked up by someone from TOBY.

      • TotallyBiased says:

@MtnRunner MTE! That said, at least they seem to be emphasizing said ‘hook-ups’ waited until after EO’s engagement was ended. Friendship only during the IStL filming. Still reminds me of the Chastain noise before CP filming, complete with digging up a rather old picture of them together!

      • Caylie says:

They didn’t get that exclusive from nowhere. It’s a little too perfect PR for ISTL and it’s being left to hang. Oscar pushes start months before, usually once you’ve got a distributor.

      • MtnRunner says:

Speaking of the Chastain rumor, ladies here blamed Luke for putting that rumor out there for PR. They also noted that Chastain’s people were quick to squelch it and Tom/Luke were silent on the matter… making Luke look even more culpable.

This has an eerie similarity to Cumby’s secret gf rumors that started in April last year as he was setting the stage for the Oscar campaign. I sure hope this isn’t Luke/Tom’s way of getting buzz going on ISTL. While I have no issues with him and Lizzy if they step out as a couple, I couldn’t help but side-eye them considering how well-timed it is for Oscar campaigning. For that reason, I’ll believe it when there’s confirmation or at least PDA to give it weight.

      • TotallyBiased says:

I actually wonder if it is more AoU/E.Olsen pr. IF it is pr at all, Tom doesn’t have anything to promote RIGHT NOW. And AoU is not meeting expectations in its first five days of US box office. Need a distraction from the BW/Offenders issues?

      • MtnRunner says:

        TB – I guess anything’s possible.

I’m curious if we’ll get a post on this tomorrow. This is just the kind of rumor to get the D’flies chattering.

      • Josa says:

@TotallyBiased. I agree, it’s more likely AoU PR. 2 Weeks ago, Star Magazine was writing story about Renner and Olsen, that they “hooked up”. Totally unbelievable if you ask me, Renner is a jerk and Olsen seems a wiser girl than to fall for jerk like Renner. Then 3 days later, gossipcop wrote that story is totally false. Maybe TPTB thinks they need more believable pair, hence Loki and Scarlet Witch, since they just did a movie together. Even the wording is similar, they hooked up. lol.

      • TotallyBiased says:

@Josa–I see what you mean! Someone posted a link to the EO/Renner ‘hook-up’ article, and it reads eerily the same. Made me wonder if this leak was supposed to just wipe the other one from people’s memory!

    • Lilacflowers says:

@Josa, thank you. That is quite lovely.
@MtnRunner, yes, because if you text somebody, especially a co-worker, regularly, then you’re in a heavy romantic relationship.
@TotallyBiased, because “hook-ups” are something a magazine should rush to publish.

If they’re together, may they be happy. If they’re not, just more of the ridiculous ways people refuse to believe men and women can be friends.

      • TotallyBiased says:

@Lilacflowers–you do have a point re texting friendship. He’s supposed to be such a great guy to work with–males and females who work with him become friends–and she mentions in some interview somewhere that he warned her how her life would change with AoU. So I can see him sending her lots of supportive texts during this press tour, especially! And yes, so many people would never recognize the possibility of a platonic friendship out of that.

As for my comment, i think you misunderstood–I was just glad that they seemed to be carefully structuring their language to NOT imply any cheating.
