Marion Cotillard in lime green Gaultier at Cannes amfAR gala: stunning or tragic?

The Cannes amfAR gala is probably the most glamourous event at the Cannes Film Festival every single year. This year’s gala was well-attended, but it seemed especially model-heavy. There weren’t very many proper actors, but at least Marion Cotillard was there to anchor the whole evening in this rather inspired look. Marion usually wears Dior for her biggest nights, so I was surprised to see her in this bright lime green gown from Jean Paul Gaultier. I LOVE IT. I love it on her specifically. Marion can be sort of airy-fairy in her style and her personality, usually choosing fanciful, at time bizarre ensembles for herself. It’s wonderful to see her looking like a proper “movie star”. She looks glamorous and perfect. Love this.

Gigi Hadid in Tom Ford. This is a white version of the gown Julianne Moore wore to the BAFTAs in February. Julianne’s version had a better fit, and Julianne’s boobs weren’t falling out like Gigi’s. Still, pretty girl and it’s a big deal for her to wear Tom Ford for such a major event. Ten bucks says that Leonardo DiCaprio has been trying to get Gigi on his yacht all week.

Dita Von Teese in Ulyana Sergeenko. I hate this on Dita. Imagine Dita is she had gone for something exquisitely glam, like Cotillard. This is a fashion fail for Dita.

Chanel Iman in Zuhair Murad Couture. Is it wrong to love this? Because I flat-out love it.

Sarah Ferguson in a conservative red gown. This is the gala-version of wearing a black pantsuit to work.

Georgina Chapman in Marchesa. Such a mess. She can’t even design clothes for herself.

Karolina Kurkova in Alexis Mabille Couture. Like Chanel Iman’s gown, I love this for what it is: big and dramatic and interesting.

Zoe Kravitz in Vionnet. SOOOO boring.

Another couple of Doutzens on stage.*
I like the cut of Marion Cotillard’s dress, but the mid century modern color is not my favorite on clothes.

    * see prior page for definition.

I could swear that the Gigi Hadid dress is on backwards.

  2. Lucy2 says:

I like Marion’s a lot. She looks gorgeous as always.
That Tom Ford gown is too revealing.
I dislike Karolina’s. Not a fan of dresses that look like a satin sheet tied together and about to fall off.

  3. Sisi says:

there are a lot of ugly shoes in this post

  4. perplexed says:

I generally think Zoe Kravitz is kind of boring looking, but with that hairstyle I could finally see the resemblance to her mom Lisa Bonet.

    • phlyfiremama says:

My sentiments exactly! Holy moly has Zoe been killing it lately~she is gorgeous.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Chanel and Karolina are both wearing dresses I love – feminine and romantic. Everybody else looks fine, except Dita and Fergie’s face is just frightening.

    • Snazzy says:

I think there is something wrong with me – I really like Chapman’s gown.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

I know….I can’t stand her annoying, desperate and fake personality and yet….oh my Gawd, she’s actually designed something beautiful and wearable this time! My head is going to explode from cognitive disorientation!

      • lisa2 says:

I’m in the same group.. because I love that dress.. It is very romantic to me. Very beautiful. I Love that color and the flowers..

        I would wear this.

    • bella says:

i absolutely LOVE karolina’s dress, too!
and i’ve got to give fergie credit…she is showcasing a lovely, trim and healthy figure!
      good for her.

      marion???
      a goddess.
every time i see her, even in the offbeat fashions, she is perfection.
she is so magnifient, she makes everything look gorgeous.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

You are so much nicer than I am. I feel mean for saying that about Fergie.

      • bella says:

        oh GNAT!
i complimeted fergie’s figure without realizing you had commented on her face!
so…not throwing you shade on that…
        you’re not mean.
we come here to be catty, right?
        😽

    • Loulou says:

      Chanel looks AMAZING. Killing it.

  6. Greek chic says:

I don’t like Marion’s dress…I don’t like satin and I think this shade of green is terrible.

Gigi… Nice boobs but her dress is too revealing and tacky.
Chanel Iman’s dress is too princessy for my taste.
    Karolina kurkova’s dress is pretty.
Georgina Chapman’s is not great but not terrible either. The worst is Dita’s.

I am not impressed with any of the dresses. Ζoe’s is the cutest. Boring but at least not fug.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

I seriously can’t believe Dita’s wearing something that isn’t quite working! I love her closet so badly and she’s one of the most consistently well-dressed people in Hollywood! This is truly a sad and unexpected moment in my life. And what is with this Gigi Hadid person? She has a weird scrunchy little face that I don’t imagine photographs very easily, and big boobs. How is she a serious model?

  7. SamiHami says:

Marion looks like a clown, with that bright shiny green and that ridiculous bright red lipstick that does not flatter her at all. Wow. What a huge fashion fail.

    • Ellecommelejour says:

      Thank you!

    • Embee says:

Agreed! She looks like the actress from Mad Men … Elizabeth somebody? Moss! And that’s not an upgrade for Cotillard.

    • bella says:

      really?
      i see the exact opposite.
marion for me is always perfection.
      she can do no wrong…
      she’s stunning!

is she truly not liked in france?
      tell me more…

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

She looks great. She can do understated glam with great panache. On a blonde, the red lips would look heinous. But with her coloring, it unexpectedly works.

  8. Jayna says:

Love love love the Gaultier on Marion.

Chanel Iman is mindblowing in that gown. It is breathtakingly stunning on her and one of the absolute highlights of the week.

  9. LizLemonGotMarried says:

    Confession:
I love Georgina Chapman’s dress. I typically despise Marchesa with the heat of a thousand suns, but something about the way the flowers seem like they’re falling, and the construction seems really easy and flowy to wear.
What I’m saying is that this is a nice caftan, and I would wear it every day.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I just shocked myself but I agree about Marchesa. I hate this brand with a passion because most of the dresses look like preschool children were playing designers with scissors, fringes, fake flowers and glue and all the celebrities pretend to like it just to suck up to Weinstein, but that one is very inoffensive. The colors are nice, the flowers are not over the top, it flows nicely together and it’s very spring-like. Plus Georgina is a very beautiful woman and her styling is pretty. I’d rather not imagine her with her ogre of a husband but my brain hates me and I just did. Eww.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

+1 Don’t worry, there’s a Celebitchy group forming to help us all deal with these feelings.

It IS a legitimately decent to nice dress.

    • Snazzy says:

OMG I made a comment about this to GNAT above.
For some reason I really like this gown

    • sills says:

LOL, didn’t see your comment and said the same, I’m surprisingly charmed by it.

  10. tracking says:

I know we’ve seen a million slight variations on the Murad dress, but it fits like a dream and the colors are spectacular with Chanel’s complexion. Love it. Though it’s nice to see her wearing something that actually fits well, I don’t love that color on Marion. Dita looks like a quirky lampshade, good lord.

  11. TheOtherMaria says:

Iman, Zoe, and Marion for the wins.

  12. sills says:

Love Marion’s look from the neck down. That hair and make-up just isn’t working.

Gigi–I hate when it feels like someone is forcing their boobs in my face. This is Cannes, not the Cap d’Agde, honey.

Also feel there’s a lot of knee-jerk anti-Marchesa around here. Flowy, flowery, and fussy may not be your thing, but if it is, this is a reasonably good representation of it. I’d sashay around the pool eating bon-bons in this.

  13. serena says:

How old is Gigi Hadid again? Her dress is kinda tacky, and it makes her look like she has no waist at all. Also, I hope she stays the hell away from Pervert Di Caprio (what a gross man).

  14. judyjudyjudy says:

I love Dita’s look. The designer is Russian and this may be a cultural reference. Looks a bit like a faberge egg to me…which are gorgeous works of art the Tsars collected.

Plus, we all know Dita has am amazing figure, so what is wrong with being different and interesting ?

    • Embee says:

I agree – I think she looks interesting and beautiful. The dress is a work of art and only an artist like Dita could carry it off.

    • Anare says:

I also love Dita Von Teese’s whole look. It is really an unusual dress. I love the color and the print and her styling is perfect. Love it!

  15. Ellecommelejour says:

Huuuuum Marion looks awful ( as most of the time IMO ) . It always makes me laugh how everybody loves and admires her out of France. Back home she is far from being anything special.

  16. We Are All Made of Stars says:

You know that old cliche about how redheads should never wear red? I guess it isn’t really a cliche after all, at least not in this case. She does look slim though.
