Melissa McCarthy in snakeskin at ‘Spy’ premiere: amazing or too covered up?

wenn22533751

Here are some photos from yesterday’s London premiere of Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham and Jude Law (a sentence I never thought I’d write). I honestly love everything about the concept for this film and I love everything about these photos. I feel like Melissa is living the dream for “normal” women. Melissa is not Angelina Jolie, she’s not Charlize Theron and by every imposed “studio rule,” Melissa should not have been hired to play the lead in an action-comedy starring two good-looking British actors famous for being heartthrobs. But here she is! And not only that, the entire film was built around her. And her costars (Jude and Jason especially) absolutely adored working with her. It’s giving me the feels. I love this.

As for Melissa’s style… I think she looks good, although I hate that the default for a plus-sized woman is to be covered from head-to-toe. She’s been doing empire-waist nouveau-caftans and breezy, oversized looks, but this covered-up maxi dress feels a bit too conservative for the big London premiere. If she wanted to go with sleeves, more power to her, but she could have showed off some cleavage or something. But like Melissa has said, she has issues shopping for clothes in her size. She’s lost weight too!

Don’t even ask what Jude Law is wearing. I don’t get it either, but God help me, I would still hit it. He looks smarmy, cheesy and BEAUTIFUL. Jason is looking good too. Bonus Miranda Hart!

Gah I just love her! When I saw her on Gilmore Girls like 14 years ago for the first time I could just tell she had huge potential. I’m so glad she is getting her due credit.

    • Jess says:

Totally! I loved Sookie from the first moment I saw her on Gilmore Girls!! And this movie looks great. I can’t wait to see it and my boyfriend is excited too!

      • springingforward says:

She looks fantastic. I love the keyhole neck and python print. Her hair, complexion and make up look great, also.
Her movie has astronomic numbers with the critics and audiences loving it….I can’t wait to see it and I am so happy that she scored another great movie…

    • Elisa the I. says:

+1. She has such beautiful eyes. Very attractive!

  2. jennifer says:

Miranda! I was hoping to see her!

    • Sullivan says:

I love Miranda. Seeing these two funny ladies together makes me smile.

    • Daisy says:

Miranda looks stunning in that jumpsuit. She must have superhuman powers: I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else pull off a jumpsuit quite that well.

    • Franca says:

Melissa, Miranda and Alison Jenney are in this. Girl crush heaven.

    • Amy says:

Was already sold, and didn’t realize Miranda was in it too!! Can’t wait! (but whoever is styling Melissa needs to be fired! These clothes do not do her justice. Maybe it’s her way of making a big splash when she starts wearing her new line??)

  3. Kitten says:

I don’t know how I feel about Jude. I still think he’s really sexy but the hairline is so distracting.
I’m not sure what he should do about it though…maybe a different haircut or shave it all off?

Melissa’s dress is ok. I’ve seen her in much worse. I think I’d like it more if it was sleeveless–just so much fabric.

    • Kiddo says:

Did he ride his bike to the premiere? Why are his pants rolled up?

      • mimif says:

Um, Newsflash. He’s wearing velvet so obviously he rode his unicycle to the premiere.

      • Kiddo says:

I guess socks with velvet would cause a ghastly amount of friction and static electricity?*

        * I know we had the unicycle discussion somewhere, but you dug up a joke I don’t recall the context of. Your Oz-Brain is like a steel trap.

      • mimif says:

Ha no, I was just being campy. His velvet (please tell me it’s not velour) coat looked slightly Ringleader-ish to me, hence riding the unicycle to the circus premiere. My brain is like steel wool.

      • Kiddo says:

You included some links to photos of a unicycle, or maybe I did…I forget what it was about, but I do know it was absurd.

        My brain is a colander.

      • mimif says:

        The colander to my vermicelli.

    • serena says:

Mn I think Jude looks hot af, but shaved jude.. not so much, he’d still be handsome but I like his hair even if they’re gradually disappearing lol. (didn’t he have an hair trasplant some years ago?? or was it a wig?)

    • Absolutely says:

He has officially turned into Phil Collins.

He should just shave it off and go full shiny bald.

  4. Greek chic says:

Different tastes i guess. I saw the trailer of this film and it looks so dump. In fact I was wondering how Jude Law, Jason Statham and Melissa agreed to appear in this movie.

Melissa is cute but I don’t like her style. I think with her outfit choices always ends up looking heavier that she is. Here she is too covered up and her dress is busy. Not a flattering look.

    • Jessica says:

Yeah, the few times she’s worn something form fitting she’s looked a good 50lbs lighter. Baggy clothes don’t do you any favours if you’re overweight. That doesn’t mean start wearing lycra, but properly fitted clothing does wonders.

    • QQ says:

I agree with everything you said, I was like: Oh look another movie of Melissa playing fat girl jokes on herself so that’s why I’m Engh on seeing it

and Bless her heart I Love her but NO on that dress It looks hideous, Little House on the Prairie meets Python

      • Greek chic says:

Her character is clumsy and ridiculous. Its annoying and embarassing, not funny. In hollywood films when a woman is super pretty and skinny she’s the sex object and usually married to an old man and when she is overweight she is the silly one.

This movie looks like it deserves a golden raspberry award.

      • Sooloo says:

My thoughts exactly. Her role in every film I’ve seen, or seen the trailers to, seems to be funny, fat, bumbling. Nothing wrong with that in itself but when it seems to be the only thing she’s allowed to do on-screen simply because it’s assumed she can’t toss in other adjectives (sexy, smoldering, sensitive) just because of her size, it makes me wonder why she keeps doing these same roles over and over. I’d love to see her doing something like playing a normal wife role (not someone with an idiot, incompetent husband) or a school teacher, a CEO, a doctor/lawyer, or just the girl next door but without all the falling and fumbling that’s so typically attributed to the overweight (Paul Blart, anyone?).

This is absolutely the reason I’m DREADING that all-women “Ghostbusters” reboot, specifically because of Leslie Jones. Everything I’ve seen/heard her in so far has been nothing but her playing the overweight, oversexed, bug-eyed, loud, finger-snapping, neck-rolling, teeth-sucking, over-the-top angry black woman who’ll tell you off in a heartbeat and follow it up with “mm-hmmmmmm!” and “Oh no you dih-ent!”

    • Chris says:

I agree. This movie looks crap. I think she’s beautiful, funny and talented but she keeps playing these over the top ridiculous characters that are more annoying then funny. I would maybe be interested if she and Rose Byrne swapped characters just to see her play a different character.

I do love me some Miranda too! I think she’s really charming and likable!

    • Mia4S says:

I don’t know what to tell you, the reviews are fantastic! Not just good -great. She’s likely got a big hit on her hands.

      • QQ says:

I know it has But it just makes me so annoyed that this is what she is doing, Fat Girl Slapstick type humor Like, she is better than the stuff she is bringing

    • Chinoiserie says:

I usually do not like these kind of films but this one has actually gotten very good reviews and looks funny.

  5. PunkyMomma says:

Sock less Jude! Always at the ready, aren’t you handsome?

  6. Kiddo says:

Like her, hate the dress. And Detective-Doctor-Mimif-Oz will be turned on by the rolled up pants, with NO SOCKS on Law. SEXAY-SEXAY.

  7. Rachel says:

Wow. She looks amazing! The dress is fab. Her makeup is stunning. And I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen a center part work on anyone. She looks radiant. And so young.

As for being covered up, I imagine there’s still a little nip in the air there. Maybe covering up was not so much about covering up because of her dress size, but because she didn’t want to be chilly and uncomfortable. I know when I see pictures of actresses at premiers when I know damn well it’s cold, and they’re running around in sleeveless dresses that barely cover their assets, all I can think about is how cold they must be. I hate being cold.

  8. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I actually kind of like the outfit. And is it just me, or has she been weirdly glowy for this whole promo? Like she seems ten times more beautiful, because she’s so happy…..like she’s honestly putting off Angelina Jolie glowy vibes to me. Her skin looks amazing.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I noticed that too. She looks especially pretty lately, so fresh and much younger. Also – great hair and make-up. That dress is nothing special but her face looks gorgeous.

    • Sos101 says:

ITA and that first pic is pretty hot. They all look great and genuinely happy.

    • Dani says:

I agree. She looks seriously awesome. Just her makeup and hair combo is killing it.

  9. Yeses says:

As much as I love Melissa, I feel her characters are all the same, funny, abrasive, blunt, self deprecating pokes at her size/looks, lots of pratfalls and physical comedy….it’s becoming quite repetitive.

    • Livvers says:

I was encouraged by the trailer, however briefly, in that at the start of the film her character appears to be eminently capable, just not a super-spy field agent. This would be in keeping with her other role in a Paul Feig movie (Bridesmaids), where she was, although a comedic character, also very capable and successful. So I have hope that the comedy in this film plays as a fish-out-of-water story, like Miss Congeniality.

      • Lucy2 says:

I think I’ve read a bit from her saying the role was different than her last few. Glad it’s getting good reviews!

  10. sienna says:

It’s interesting to me how small Melissa looks beside Jude Law. I have a couple of friends who have met him an both said he was tiny in build. Like teenage boy tiny. She is definitely fuller figured but she doesn’t dwarf him.

I think if we were to see Melissa in real life we would not think she is overly big. It is just beside the rest of Hollywood’s 00-sized actresses she appears large rather than full. Anyway, I love her acting and am looking forward to this movie, I think its a cute concept.

    • Tifygodess says:

Actually that’s a good point. I went back and looked at the photos again and you are right she does look smaller than she normally does standing next to him. I know she lost weight and all but I have to agree that I bet in person she’s much smaller than she “appears”. We normally just see pictures of her standing alone and it’s hard to reference her size that way.

  11. Samtha says:

Jason Statham is the best part of the Spy trailer. I love how open he is to poking fun at himself and the typical characters he plays. Is it too much to hope they actually–gasp!–let Melissa have a love interest in this one?

She looks so pretty at the premiere. The hair and makeup are wonderful. I actually like the dress and think it’s pretty and flattering.

  12. Luca76 says:

The movie is at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. She’s definitely living the dream.

  13. TXEggplant says:

MM looks like she had something done. Her face has the look of someone who had gastric bypass or maybe a band. She’s lost a lot of weight quickly. The glowing is either her eating healthier or just better products. I’d guess a combo of both. She looks good.

Jude Law mmmmmm! He does look smarmy and HOT! His outfit … I don’t even care because he makes it work! Speaking of, he’s had some fillers, and tightened up his body some. Yummy!

    • Samtha says:

She’s been slowly taking weight off for almost a year now.

    • deehunny says:

Reallly? Looking at those pics I thought for sure it looks like Jude has had recent work done. GOod work but still work

  14. soxfan says:

Melissa looks lovely. Not crazy about the dress, but she is glowing, as others have pointed out. IMO, Jude Law was at his finest in “The Holiday”. While physically attractive, he also scored major points for the way that he acted as a dad with his onscreen children. Those scenes always make me cry, as a matter of fact!

  15. neelyo says:

I liked her in ‘Samantha Who?’ and have been happy for her success without the desire to see any of her movies for the reasons many of the posters above have listed. That said, I want to see this and I love that first photo. She’s not a size two, the guys don’t have all of their hair (like me) and who cares? They all look hot and happy.

  16. Jag says:

She looks good but the print is too busy for my taste. The guys look good.

I am surprised – and I know I’ll be blasted for this – that some news outlets are calling her “slim” now. She’s not. She’s still obese. But it’s good if she lost weight if she wanted to. But let’s not try to convince people that obese is “slim” because it’s not. (Full disclosure, I’m currently morbidly obese due to medical issues, but I have been slim in the past when I had good doctors.)

    • FLORC says:

      Jag
I saw those too. She’s slimmed down for her, but is still not slim. Maybe outlets creating good will/sucking up?
      And hope your health improves!

  17. FingerBinger says:

I like Melissa’s dress. I don’t like the cinch or the tie under the cleavage.

  18. FLORC says:

She looks like Cass Elliot for styling.
And Jude? Yea. He manages to look sleazy, but still appealing. Not sure how. It’s very conflicting feelings he brings about.

  19. mememe says:

    Melissa who?

ALL I see is Jude Law. Damn. Yum

  20. JaxT says:

Saw Spy last week (already out in Australia), it was a really funny movie, everyone in it was great. I really really enjoyed it. Jason Statham was amazing in it, I really want to see him do more comedy.

  21. FurballFriend says:

Speaking as a woman who could stand to lose a good 50 pounds, Melissa probably feels comfortable and less anxious wearing something loose rather than form-fitting. She has mentioned on more than one occasion having trouble finding clothes she feels good in. Maybe this dress is something she feels comfortable and confident wearing. I don’t think the dress is that terrible, although I think a solid color or perhaps a different print would be a better choice.

    • FLORC says:

Maybe off the rack she has trouble. Those interviews as she’s become more of a top lister she only speaks of that in retail settings. Meanwhile she has designers banging down her door to dress her. Great designers that know how to work with her shape. She’s looked amazing before. This just seems sloppy, but not from a lack of available clothes.

      • Granger says:

Genuine question, here: Does she really have designers banging down her door to dress her? Who are they? They can’t be any of the famous men who dress skinny actors, because I can’t imagine any of them wanting to work with a heavy woman.

      • FLORC says:

Search her name in the archives here and go back to award season right after Bridesmaids. That was the turn around.
She was becoming a big star riding high with Bridesmaids and complained about sizes. That was all that was needed.
Also, the Project Runway guy who dresses the Mad Men red head worked with her. Sorry. Links aren’t going through to post and my mind is blanking on names, but the info is easily found and al on this site.

  22. Chinoiserie says:

The dress looks wonderful in my opinion. Maybe she could have worn something more daring for premiere but it is not like she needs to.

  23. LA Juice says:

this is the best look I have seen on her. she looks great!

  24. Mzizkrizten says:

I love the dress. It looks comfy. I also love that she ISNT relying on her cleavage to look good. A woman of any size can look pretty and sexy without putting her tits on display.

  25. Easypeasy123 says:

I really like the dress. It’s looks comfortable and a bit funky

  26. qtpi says:

I love her. That is all.

  27. krtmom says:

I think she looks pretty good!

  28. ahhhh says:

I saw this movie with my mother, father and younger brother and we were all laughing hysterically. If there are fat jokes in there, none of them are making fun of fat people, they’re judging the people making them. Melissa McCarthy will actually say things like “really??” If they happen. It was slapstick, it was silly, it was great. And we can now call Melissa McCarthy an action film star haha and the always wonderful Rose Byrne was so funny too

  29. Cupcake says:

    Chummy!!!!!

  30. Blackbetty says:

    Love Melissa McCarthy

  31. Chem says:

OMG the first photo is my dream. I’m so jealous.

  32. Denise says:

She looks very pretty. Radiant. The dress looks good in some shots.

  33. Lucy2 says:

She looks great! I don’t mind the dress at all.

  34. danielle says:

I think she looks gorgeous! I loved seeing her there looking so powerful with two hot guys making googly eyes at her!!

  35. Katie says:

I don’t like the dress but I don’t think it’s fair to say she’s too covered up. She looks beautiful and happy and if she feels like being modest and covered, that’s okay. I’d rather see someone dressed in a modesty and classy manner far more than seeing someone with their bits hanging out everywhere.
