Jake Gyllenhaal is too serious, Oscar-y to talk about his physical transformation

jake1

Some people have strong feelings about Jake Gyllenhaal. I’m not one of them. I used to like him, genuinely, but over the years I’ve just stopped caring for the most part. Some people felt that Jake was totally robbed of an Oscar nomination for Nightcrawler, so maybe his new Oscar-bait film Southpaw will get him one. I’ve seen the trailer and it looks like it’s not going to be my jam. I’m not into boxing movies in general, but I’m just not buying Jake specifically in this role. What bugs me a little bit is that Jake is trying to remake himself into a super-serious, humorless, super-Oscary dude. And I think people would be more likely to root for him if he didn’t come across like a guy who takes himself too seriously, you know? This Details interview actually opens with Jake asking “Do you actually want to know how many sit-ups I did? Are you easing me into the question?” Like the bulk of this interview and a million other interviews he will do won’t be exactly about his physical transformation.

His physical transformation is part of his internal transformation into a character: “I believe that. I really do. But I think we all see what we want to see. If you want to see a guy who has gotten into shape, then that’s what you see. But if you want to see what I feel, I think you have to look a little deeper…People have a lot of other sh-t they have to do that’s more interesting and more important, so I don’t blame them for being like, ‘Oh, wait, how many sit-ups did you have to do?’ Or, ‘Oh, wow, what did you eat to lose that much weight?’ But you’re missing the point. Nightcrawler was ironically about the trouble with that question. It was about why people only look at how much weight you lost, as opposed to what’s at the heart of what you’re doing.”

Doing darker films: “People say, ‘You made all these changes in your life, and all your movies seem so different now. I really like the movies you’re making now.’ Which implies that they didn’t . . .”

His 20s: “I was trying to figure out a lot of stuff… We’re all told we’re going to get to a place where those things will come together, where we’ll somehow be whole or happy or whatever it is. So I went searching….There’s a period of time in your life, in your twenties, when you’re listening to a lot of other people’s opinions. You’re not sure about what you believe in, and you’re moving in a direction that you feel like looks right to other people. And then you think, Wait, what do I feel? What do I want? What moves me? It’s not always so pure and clear. It’s not like I have my agent on one shoulder and my pure artist on the other.”

Taking real hits on Southpaw: “I got hit pretty hard in the face. All the producers ran [over]. I don’t think out of real worry for me, but just the fact that we were only two weeks into shooting. There is something jarring about being hit in the face. I don’t know how to explain it. It wakes me up. Your initial instinct is to lean out. It’s the instinct to lean in that took me five months. Hitting someone—I don’t have as much of a problem with that. But I don’t like to get hit.”

His journey: “What else is there but the journey of trying to be a good person, or a good man? In this incarnation, that seems to be my goal. It’s a complicated thing, because I think the idea of good doesn’t subtract complexities, doesn’t subtract darkness.”

[From Details]

So Oscar. Much serious. I understand what he’s saying in almost every quote and I even agree with him, but the way he speaks about his transformations and his journeys and all of that… he just seems like such a morose dude who takes himself way too seriously. Like, he’s still trying to prove that he’s this intense and amazing dramatic actor, to the point where he’s just boring people to death. I don’t know – maybe a Jake-loonie will feel differently about this interview.

He was robbed of a nomination last year but the trailer for Southpaw doesn’t make me want to see it.

    • Beth No. 2 says:

Agree. The limited reviews for Southpaw are lacklustre so far (57% on Metacritic, 60% on Rotten Tomatoes), and a July release date doesn’t exactly scream Oscar territory. He has another shot with “Demolition” directed by Jean Marc Vallee, but I am not feeling both films so far.

    • Abbott says:

Exactly. Even with Rachel McAdams and Kurt Sutter.

    • bns says:

I wanna see it. I love boxing movies and Sons of Anarchy.

  2. Bee says:

He’s not going to get any Oscars for Southpaw IMO

  3. Abbott says:

I am still in the initial stages of becoming a Gyllenh-olic and I fear these interviews may stop my complete transformation before I’ve begun to enjoy the process. Sigh.

He should just ride on the goodwill he got from Nightcrawler and charm the sh*t out of the award voters. Leave the Jon Snow introspective talk to Michael Fassbender.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      This

    • Kitten says:

      Don’t let it stop you!
      Embrace the Gyllenholism.
Let in envelope you in it’s sweet smile and cerulean eyes.

      • I Choose Me says:

        Are you Jake Loonie Kitten?

I for one am a longtime member of the Jakaholics since his Bubble Boy, Donnie Darko days. I forgave him for that Swifty mess and for Prince of Persia that movie which I totally didn’t see at all. Boxing movies aren’t my thing either but I’ll see it for him.

      • Kitten says:

        Donnie Darko!! ♥ ♥

I love him so, so much. Boxing movies and boxing in general is disgusting to me, but I’ll see it because the Jakey love is THAT strong for me.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

I’ve loved him since Donnie Darko, but after reading a few of his recent interviews, I started the reverse journey of considering giving up my Gyllenholic card. What happened with a good old, always happy and bubbly Jake, whose interviews were always enjoyable to read or listen to? He used to be Hiddleston-level of enthusiastic but less cringe-worthy and now he’s suddenly all Christian Bale. But I will always love his acting.

      • Kirb says:

He obviously made a shift, from saying what is pleasant to everyone, to now what he wants to say for himself. He moved slowly from being vague about his frustration with studios (a “guided” career path culminating in that Persia flop), to outright dissing it all was just for the money in Esquire UK this year. That’s huge.

It’s not nice and happy for old fans, but it seems to me for him to keep swimming with the sharks, he’s figuring out his way…and Not every interview is the same. If someone like 50 cent is around, he gets light: Vibe magazine 2-part interview. (But ofc Details is more Celebitchy’s demographics so…)

      • Kirb says:

“What happened with a good old, always happy and bubbly Jake…”

There could be something behind the scenes, he won’t disclose that changed him drastically. Hitflix quoted Ayer, Jake was sick of everything when taking on End of Watch. That movie from improv to low-budget was back to his indie roots. Villeneuve told David Poland, Jake’s experience with the studios was “not nice”, without knowing “all the details”. Jake’s tried to have more control over his career: find directors who can share creative control with actors, want the same projects.

I’m guessing, the “happy and bubbly” was his naive acceptance of getting to be part of the game. As a young man. When it backfired he had to save himself. (Villeneuve said Jake needed to find his love for acting again – it was LOST somehow.) Then add that 30s is often an actor’s prime where only the best ocassionally get good lead roles in their 40s, he got serious. Think of it as his version of Gosling taking a break from acting to direct.

    • K. says:

Fassbender is one of the few actors who doesn’t take himself seriously… Gyllenhal is more in a Bale-phase.

    • Kirb says:

Folks, he’s very funny on the Mystery Show podcast talking about celebrity heights. His height. There are bootlegs on tumblr of his Little Shop of Horrors performance, in the Rick Moranis role. Adorably funny.

He may want an Oscar like every actor, but he’s been talking this way ever since he got more into his work circa Enemy. The tougher a role is, the more he justifies staying the course.

  4. danielle says:

And a few years ago, he was trying to be action hero guy. I think he’s a good actor, but he sounds like he needs to get out of his own head a bit. Pick up a hobby or something.

    • Mia4S says:

Action hero guy? Heck he was trying to be Batman at one point and was the second choice after Christian Bale. I still can’t tell if he truly moved on from that whole blockbuster idea as he says or if he is still a bit resentful. He seems to have swung way in the other direction to almost overcompensate.

  5. BangersandMash says:

Yeah, Jake is on that serious tip nowadays.

I guess he really wants that oscar, and I suppose it’s part of his journey to being a good man.

  6. Damn says:

He never did it for me and he always has taken himself too seriously.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

No, he hasn’t. His seriousness is pretty recent actually. For the majority of his career, he used to be that guy who was always goofing around on sets, pranking his castmates, dancing and singing in interviews, completely anti-method, almost jumping from enthusiasm while promoting his movies. There are tones of videos of bubbly Jake on yt. Then something happened and he turned into a method actor who’s all about his craft and I don’t like it at all. He’s talented enough to be a great actor and not be a method jerk.

  7. Alessio says:

I agree with him about getting asked those weight questions in the sense that why would you care how he lost weight for Nightcrawler, he clearly didn’t do it for the glamour. And the way he looks in that movie is perfect for the story and he really deserved more recognition.
with this one, it kind of screams desperation, and it’s coming out too early for being a real oscar bait imo

  8. gilmore says:

It really wasn’t that bad? Just generic? I feel like this is usually the answers he has during interviews. Like you aren’t gonna get Chris Pratt-esque gold from him, it’s never been like that.

    • Esmom says:

I tend to agree. I think this is just him, vs him trying hard. Some people are just sort of naturally intense and have a hard time lightening up. I’m not really a fan, although I think I’ll always have a soft spot for him because of Donnie Darko.

    • sofia says:

I think written interviews can come across like too serious because you don’t hear HOW they say these things. Maybe he answered all of this without a serious look while looking at the horizon, maybe he said it with a smile or some sweetness. I didn’t read the whole interview and maybe that is explained or described by the journalist, but I actually feel this was totally ok and less superficial, it was actually thoughtful without being arrogant or too precious (like some recent interviews I read recently).

      • Carol says:

After seeing him on Graham Norton promoting Southpaw, I have to say I found him hysterical with that dry sense of humor that doesn’t come across well in writing.

  9. merski says:

He’s been doing some really solid work in the last few years and barely got any recognition for it. Sadly, it seems to be making him entirely humorless… Bummer.

  10. COSquared says:

    YAWN. Too try-hard.

  11. teatimeiscoming says:

Nightcrawler, really? I kept waiting for him to skin someone and wear them as a coat.

  12. Nicole says:

He’s boring and unattractive. But I liked him in that movie. What was it called?…

  13. minime says:

I will not even read his interview ’cause his public persona usually annoys me and I don’t want to be distracted by that…I really like his work and I do think he is a serious actor who deserves more recognition. He also picks really good projects…he was exceptional in most films he did (Prisoners? Enemy?). A bit like his sister, he might just be too much of a serious person regarding his job to get the “attention” from Hollywood. Oscar or no Oscar they will both continue to be some of the best actors of their generation.

  14. Lucy2 says:

I’m not sure about southpaw, but overall I’m really liking the types of films he’s choosing to do these days. And I think he has a fair point on all the questions about physical transformation.

  15. Neelyo says:

I don’t need to see SOUTHPAW, I saw the trailer. Unless it turns out that he’s been dead the whole time at the end, I can’t imagine there’s a single surprise.

  16. Kiddo says:

I had zero problems with this interview, but maybe I am morose-serious? The dude said the biggest transformation was training himself to get hit in the face, not the number of sit-ups he did to make his body harder. It took the conversation away from the banal vanity element to what was most difficult to accomplish in the role. I don’t know if I could ever purposefully submit to being hit in the face, for a game of pretend. I don’t know if he is saying this as an Oscar push, he may be, he may not be, but this answer is refreshingly different. The trailers for Southpaw don’t really say what the story is about, other than getting his kid back, which on the surface, sounds like a lot of other films.

    • Abbott says:

Kiddo is showing signs of early onset Jakey-bola fever.

    • Kristen says:

I agree. He sounds smart. He’s using large-ish words correctly, which is more than I can say for a lot of celebrities out there. And it sounds like he actually thought about his answers before opening his mouth…

      Yes, my standards are low.

    • Kitten says:

Me too, man. I was starting to wonder if I was reading the same interview as everyone else.

Then again, I have a fever for the flavor of The Gyllenhog (how far can we go with this?).

      He’s a talented actor.
      He’s a sweetheart.
      He cares about his *Work*.
      He’s controlled by The Moon.

      I love him.

      • AG-UK says:

all of the above and my 2nd husband soo easy on the eyes 🙂 well at least my eyes and he has a great smile

    • sofia says:

I’m neutral about him and I agree with you. We are used to so much banality and superficiality that when someone seems to have a brain and be sensitive “OH MY GOD SUCH A TRY HARD!”. The last interview I read he did come across as too precious but in this one I actually read some interesting ideas about the process and his perception of growing up and making choices.

      • Elisa the I. says:

same here. I can totally relate to his perception of growing up. He comes across as smart and thoughtful.

    • I Choose Me says:

      I concur.

  17. Mia4S says:

Yeah he’s definitely on the Weinstein gimme gimme Oscar campaign bus. If that’s the goal though he’s waaaaaaay too early. Southpaw is not getting great reviews and will likely get forgotten. Also seeing the trailer you see the whole movie!

He’s a very strong actor but this kind of thirst doesn’t suit him. Makes him less likeable. Same when he was on the make me a movie star push a few years ago.

    • Dara says:

Mia – is Weinstein’s gimme gimme Oscar bus even road-worthy after last year? I got the impression last time around that the wheels fell off the bus somewhere outside of Palm Springs and never made it all the way to Oscar-town. Weinstein was last seen standing by the side of the road under a rather large cactus trying to get cellphone reception so he could call someone in the industry who actually cared.

      • Mia4S says:

I don’t know if anyone has really checked Weinstein’s track record. He’s never been 100%. He will also switch players late in the game. Last year he was all about a big push for Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby…until Imitation Game emerged as the stronger player. Then he does nothing for Rigby and beats The Imitation Game into the ground. While it got no major wins it got tons of nominations. So unfortunately he still gets results. So this year it will be Southpaw for 10 minutes…until a better shot emerges; then too bad Southpaw.

      • K. says:

@Mia4S Agree. He still gets results, probably not like in his “golden years”.

  18. shannon says:

Jake will always be Donnie Darko to me. I think he’s a good actor, but every time I see anything related to Southpaw, I think that it’s Scott Speedman instead of Jake. I have no desire to see it.

  19. Jag says:

Yes, he’s being too serious. I do like what he’s saying to a point, but it’s too much for an entire interview.

I just recently watched Nightcrawler, and while I thought it was good, I don’t think he deserved an Oscar for it.

Now, having just finished watching Frida this morning. Salma was robbed. (Never saw The Hours, so maybe Kidman was better. For now I’m saying robbed.)

    • Jayna says:

Julianne Moore was better than Nicole Kidman in The Hours.

    • FingerBinger says:

@Jag Jake might not have deserved the oscar but he deserved a nomination ,especially over Bradley Cooper.

    • Wow–I thought the opposite with Salma. I thought the movie was terrible……..Frida K’s life was interesting, but Salma didn’t make me want to know anything about it.

  20. Locamochagirl says:

He’s so serious he can’t be asked about his body? Oh, right, because women NEVER have to answer questions about their body. They too only get to talk about their work. I forgot, yes, Jake, let’s be serious in this interview.

    Please.

    • Kitten says:

“People have a lot of other sh-t they have to do that’s more interesting and more important, so I don’t blame them for being like, ‘Oh, wait, how many sit-ups did you have to do?’ Or, ‘Oh, wow, what did you eat to lose that much weight?’ ”

Did he say something else that I missed? It didn’t seem like he was complaining about it. He said he gets why people ask him about the physical transformation. He was simply saying that there’s more to the roles he plays then just weight gain/loss.

      • anon33 says:

ITA with you. Love me some Jake.

I’m not even going to attempt to enter the Jon Hamm thread…nobody wants to hear my defensive rants. :>

  21. Tig says:

I had to laugh at the Scott Speedman reference- tried to plow through Barefoot, starring him-it was ghastly! And and a great cast to boot- such a waste.

Re Jake- liked him OK in the sappy movie with Anne Hathaway. But boxing movies have just been done to death- and the “redemption” ones are the worse. Good luck to him!

  22. Jayna says:

I love him as an actor. He deserved an Oscar nom for Nightcrawler. He was really fantastic in the dark thriller Hugh Jackman movie, Prisoners, where he was the detective. I loved what he did with the character, not showy, emotionless, but that blinking tic he decided to do for the character. And his character broke my heart in Brokeback Mountain. I will see this movie just because he’s in it. And I love boxing movies.

  23. Izzy says:

Dear Jake: now you know what your female counterparts feel like when they are interviewed. Welcome to our world.

  24. Jayna says:

I forgot to add, that as much as I really enjoy him as an actor, his Actor’s Studio interview was one of the worst I’ve ever seen. He just deflected and made jokes a lot of the time. It was very disappointing, except in some parts.

  25. Tara says:

He is in his super serious mode. Nightcrawler was great for him though. I see where he’s coming from because the press gives too much focus to the superficial aspects of the performance. If he was an actress, it would be even worse. Then people would accuse him of transforming physically for kudos if he talked about it a lot, but those are the questions the media is obsessed with, so it is a catch-22.

  26. Babe says:

I don’t think the interview was THAT bad, even if I agree he usually sounds too serious on print, and I’m not sure why because he seems like a genuinely nice guy on talk shows. He was doing some promo for this movie in England and I caught him on BBC Radio 1 and he was really funny, he even explained the infamous moon quote LOL I don’t know what’s wrong with his printed interviews.

  27. kev says:

He is one of the best actor of his generetion, if not the best. Totally robbed for Nightcrawler, Bradley Cooper nom was a joke.

    • Jayna says:

We rented the Sniper, and I never even finished it. I bailed halfway through.

      • “American Sniper”? I didn’t think it was a well made movie. At least half an hour could’ve been shaved off (by the third tour, I was wondering when the movie would be over)……and I’m mad that half the storyline (the part about the rival snipers….) was wrong/not true. Like wtf? But I think that is BRadley Cooper’s best performance on film, because before that, I never thought he could act. And then he goes and ruins all the goodwill I had for him (and his body–I am now admitting it for the first time, I loved the Booty in the beige booty shorts) by doing “Aloha”…WHY?

    • Lilacflowers says:

I agree that Jake was robbed of an Oscar nomination but Bradley Cooper wasn’t the one who robbed him *cough cumber cough*

  28. manta says:

I’m not seeing humourless just thoughtful answers he didn’t feel to punctuate with jokes or punchlines.

I just remember a little press and some Q&A he did for his Broadway play with Ruth Wilson and he can turn on the “light” button. It probably depends on the context.
Maybe I’m biased, I like him and admit I think his choices of roles in the last 10 years have always interested me. Soft spot fo Jarhead and Source Code and he made me sit through a Portman movie (Brothers).

  29. ashley says:

I don’t get what’s wrong with this interview,i liked it. I started to like him again after watching night crawler,i recommended it to my sister and she was shocked he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar. I’ll definitely be seeing southpaw.

  30. Christine says:

He’s one of those actors that’s just… there. I don’t get the appeal.

  31. Isabelle says:

Its not just Nightcrawler, think he should’ve been nom’ed for Prisoners as well. He has been knocking it out of the ballpark lately & Southpaw looks like a good performance. If it requires him acting serious so we keep getting this good roles from him, OK with him being serious.

  32. sunsetsnow says:

Get over yourself! You are just an actor. It’s not that serious.

  33. Josefa says:

Jake is one of those actors I just watch movies of. He’s gorgeous and super talented but I think he’s always been like this. My response to most of his interviews is “really, dude?”.

  34. Tiffany says:

What is it about Detail Magazine where ever cover subject comes across as a humorless a- hole. I mean, just…damn.

  35. Jonathan says:

Somewhere along the line Jake turned into Shia Le Bouf, dammit.
