John Stamos checked himself into rehab two weeks after his June DUI

A month ago, John Stamos was arrested for a DUI in LA. It was his first arrest (that we know of), and Stamos was apparently in such bad shape when he was arrested that the police officers took him to a hospital. Since then, People Magazine and other weeklies have been running stories with quotes from “sources close to John” about how he’s in bad shape and has been for a few years now. Apparently, the breaking point might have been the death of his mother last September. Whatever was going on, it wasn’t good. And thankfully Stamos understood that and he’s currently in rehab.

John Stamos has been in rehab for more than 2 weeks now … TMZ has learned. Stamos checked into a residential treatment facility on June 24, according to our sources. That was 12 days after his DUI bust in Beverly Hills.

Sources tell TMZ … Stamos’ issues are not a recent development. We’re told he’s getting treatment for a substance abuse problem that “developed over a period of time.”

You’ll recall … when Stamos was arrested, the officers felt he was in dire need of medical attention and rushed him to a hospital. He was released the next day.

People confirms the news and it really does seem like Stamos did check himself in and this probably isn’t some move designed to make the court go easy on him. And let’s be fair – California is not hard on celebrities getting DUIs anyway. The most he would probably get from the court system would be probation, maybe some community service, a fine and some gentle encouragement to seek treatment. A lot of people have said that they could never like any drunk driver, ever. And while I understand that point of view, for what it’s worth… it really did seem like Stamos had some real problems and he’s legitimately getting help for it. If he screws up again, sure, let’s get out the pitchforks. But for now I mostly just think he’s basically a decent guy and he’s trying to deal with his problems.

I don’t like to doubt anyone’s addiction, but sometimes to me, celebs use the rehab route to stave off a tide of criticism. Sometimes DUIs just mean you’re an idiot and not an addict. I think this is a calculated move to save his career pre-Full House reprisal. This could have potentially destroyed that opportunity before it even began. I feel much in the same way about Jon Hamm’s rehab stint; that it was done to sort if justify the massive cheating rumors that he thought were going to come his way, rather than answer a true addiction.

I agree but this guy seems to be in genuine pain. Losing a loved one is the worst & I’m giving him a little slack on this one. And also because I like JS. However, drunk driving is an epidemic & it’s frustrating that it happens ALL THE TIME!!

Normally I’d completely agree with you and laugh at the obvious attempt to maintain his image, but something about this feels genuine, maybe the DUI was a wake up call for him? We’re just now hearing about it and he’s been in rehab for two weeks, I think if it was calculated his rep would’ve announced it right away, hopefully he’s getting the help he needs.

I felt like something was off a couple of months ago when he just kept trying to start a fight with the Olsen twins. That got weird fast.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

That did strike me as odd. Everyone knew the Olsens weren’t going to be part of Fuller House, and instead of letting them bow out gracefully, he got weirdly combative. I really hope he’s getting the help he needs now.

Love him!! I hope he gets the help he needs!

I have to be honest, and if he is struggling with addiction then I wish him all the best in getting help. But I just have started to really dislike this guy and as a public figure want him to go away ever since he attacked the Olsen twins (God forbid they grow up) and made snide comments about Mindy Kahling. He seems like an ass.

Again I wish him well and hope he gets help, but he seriously lost me when he attacked the Olsen girls.

    • Mary says:

The Olsen twins are 29. I think we can start calling them women instead of girls.

      • Debbie says:

I think that is hardly the point of my comment. I think the fact that a man that knew them since they were infants attacked them over a tv show is the bigger point

He’s been an alcoholic for years. Remember that bizarre morning show incident in Australia where he was plastered out of his mind. That was 2007. They tried to give some runaround story. A couple of years later he came clean and admitted he was drunk.

  6. Crumpet says:

The minute someone drives drunk, it becomes OUR problem. Our lives get risked by their inability to handle their problems. I don’t feel real forgiving right now.

    • Mary says:

Agreed! I don’t have a drinking problem so maybe I just don’t get it but I don’t give passes for drunk drivers. Like do people genuinely not understand you are putting people at when you make that decision? And generally, don’t they say that when someone is arrested for drunk driving, it probably wasn’t the first time they did it? It was just the first time they got caught. I used to work with this guy who bragged to me about how often he got away with drunk driving. It was disgusting and I can’t believe someone would use that as a pickup line. As soon as he told me that, I wanted to find out where he usually drinks so I could call the cops on him, but he ended up quitting so I never got the chance.

I agree. I hope he’s able to get the help he needs.

He has been acting erratically since his mom died. My buddy is an “actor-waiter” at a We Ho restaurant that John frequentsly visits, and even HE noticed John seemed sadder and more “desperate for company” (his personal opinion) since last year.
