Benedict Cumberbatch brought Sophie & his dad to Wimbledon: lovely or tired?

wenn22686353

This weekend was all about Wimbledon (and Comic-Con). Serena Williams was declared the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) when she completed her “Serena Slam,” her first since 2003, by defeating Garbine Muguruza on Saturday. Serena was widely expected to win, but everyone was still happy for her (except for a few douchebags on Twitter). But there was a notable uptick in excitement for the Men’s Final on Sunday. Tons of celebrities came out to watch Roger Federer versus Novak Djokovic. Benedict Cumberbatch was one of them.

Benedict didn’t bring Sophie to the Men’s Final, although he also attended the Men’s Semifinal (Federer v. Andy Murray, with Federer coming out victorious) with his wife on Friday. I’m including some shots of them at the end of the post, and you can see more shots of them together here at the Daily Mail. Sophie wore an Erdem blouse, because she loves Erdem and I think she’s probably got a relationship with those people. I guess Sophie is more of an Andy Murray fan and she didn’t want to see Federer v. Djokovic. So Bendy went with his dad.

Benedict is currently in rehearsals for Hamlet. I guess his Hamlet isn’t going to have really short hair, because Benedict is thankfully growing out his auburn locks after a really unfortunate haircut a few months ago. This suit looks nice on him too – he looks like he’s lost weight, right? We still don’t know the Cumberbaby’s name, by the way.

  1. Freebunny says:

    Really tiring.
Go to your Hamlet rehearsals and give paps a rest.

    • Catherine says:

He went to enjoy the tennis, there were some photographers about, why so pressed?

    • Vera says:

Wow… so he has to stay at home when he is not rehearsing?

      • Catherine says:

        Vera, apparently yes.

      • Freebunny says:

Yes and babysitt the CumberBaby like the modern dad he is.

      • Aussie girl says:

Let’s just ignore all the other celebs that have been papped watching the tennis. Let them enjoy their sport and probably a date day away from baby duties, and I think it’s nice he brought his dad. Is he in any of the pics..?

      • Absolutely says:

Of course people can go out when they have children. But I have to admit to a little side eye at someone who (I assume) is doing long all day rehearsals, and obviously is not getting up in the middle of the night with junior based on the level of energy he has for the tennis, seems to be spending his entire weekend away from his new 4? 6? Week old? Different strokes I guess, but the most you could get me away from my babe when he was that young was for an hour lunch or a dr’s appointment. Granted my husband was working, but even he wasn’t going off to to spend hours away on his days off, which were pretty precious considering he works a lot.
        Just sayin’.

      • Dara says:

I’d be of the mind to give him a pass too, if he or his team hadn’t just recently trotted out the ‘too busy with Hamlet to attend this other thing’ or ‘need to be home with the baby’ excuses to explain why he didn’t attend work-related promotional events.

If I were the people he blew off I would be just a little miffed that he had the time to attend 2 tennis matches in the same week, but couldn’t be bothered about the other stuff. If he didn’t want to go to something, that’s his prerogative – but it’s bad form to claim to be too busy and then be seen out and about on multiple occasions not long after.

p.s. His dad is still a looker. I hope Ben ages that well.
p.p.s. In the not aging well category – Hugh Grant was sitting (seated?) a few seats away from Ben and his dad on Saturday and I hardly recognized him.

      • j says:

i think the baby was born at the end of may tbh.

i don’t think he missed any promo events besides the SDCC, its one thing to go to local things for a few hours as opposed to losing like 2 whole days flying out of the country. but id also be afraid i’d get stuck and miss scheduled rehearsals lol

    • Betti says:

As much as he irritates me i don’t think he went for the pap exposure – he is a big tennis fan and the opportunity to go to the men’s final and sit in the royal box would be too good to pass over. Guess that CBE is opening all sorts of doors as you have to be invited to sit in the royal box.

      • Zapp Brannigan says:

Eh I think he went for tennis and attention, why else would he have his stylist tweet what he was wearing unless it was a “sponsored” outing.

They all play the game but he is not subtle about the shilling stuff.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        He gave interviews.

      • Lindy79 says:

His stylist isn’t helping his “I am dead private and normal, really I am” mantra he’s got going on. Private people don’t have stylists tweeting what they wear.

But why shouldn’t he go to the tennis if he’s a fan. I would if I got that chance.

      • Kay says:

He does love tennis, that’s probably the primary factor. He should be shilling Hamlet a bit for the livecast sales. Nothing wrong with mixing a little work with leisure.

      • Catherine says:

And Ralph Lauren tweeted pics of celebs who were wearing their clothes, it’s called promotion.

      • Betti says:

Ah – i didn’t realise he gave interviews and shilled his outfit. Still the eternal hustler.

      • Lindy79 says:

No one begrudges him playing the game, it’s the fact he flatly denies doing it and acts like he’s above it that irks.. me anyway.
Get it, enjoy it, why not?

      • Dara says:

@Lindy79 – I know that is why I’m irked. I don’t mind the hustle, all actors and performers do it. It’s the hypocrisy (or maybe it’s just a shocking lack of self-awareness) that gets me.

In the last year or so he has seemingly taken every job that is offered to him and then complains about being tired from all the work and travel, he has complained about fan selfies but looks overjoyed when it’s a famous person taking the picture, he has bemoaned his loss of privacy but has been all too eager to accept the perks that come with his increased fame, etc. etc. I don’t care if he does any or all of those things, he just needs to stop whining about it all and get on with it.

      • Betti says:

@Lindy and Dara – He’s a whiney pretentious snob and agree with you both as it being something that irritates the hell out of me. He’s happy to photobomb/pose for selfies when its with someone famous but he’s too above it all to pose with the plebs i.e. his fans who put him where he is. He loves and craves the attention – he just needs to own it and stop with the ‘i’m in it for the art not the fame and money’ – both which he desp wants.

For someone with a young baby he sure looks rested and refreshed – i known new dads to look like there about to keel over at this point.

      • Lindy79 says:

        Exactly Dara, nailed it!

      • Beth No. 2 says:

You ladies are SO JUDGMENTAL. Cumberbatch is someone who walks the talk, please. Case in point: there was a pic where he appeared to be caught in a selfie taken by the great Bjorn Borg and wife. I’m sure Bendy gave poor Bjorn a lengthy lecture about the vacuousness of selfies with lotsa tut-tutting and fie-ing, before turning to a young couple next to him to warn them about the dangers of unplanned shotgun marriages.

He is most upstanding and consistent in character.

      • Cate says:

@Beth No. 2: Hahahahaha, isn’t he just?! I still like him, but oh my…….maybe it’s a certain lack of self knowledge…Or maybe he’s always being Grumpybatch in his interviews!

      • Gina says:

Since the bad parent implications have already crossed the line anyway, I’ll just go ahead and say I’ve seen things that aren’t explained away by personality flaws, so I’m pretty certain something is actually wrong with him.

He hasn’t given more than a handful of soundbites for a few months, so I’ll see where it goes with Hamlet.

    • Vesta says:

      I feel you Freebunny.
I saw elsewhere a pic in which it looked almost like he was trying to photobomb Björn Borg, and all I could feel was Go home… for a while & for a change, Benny.

    • S. says:

I find it amusing when people who are interested in gossip whine about celebs who get papped. If people did not invest so much time in gossip there would be no pap pics.

      • Ripper says:

Seriously, and OMG, to any judgy sanctimonious parents: shut up. Even people with new babies are allowed out of the house without the baby occasionally. “*I* wouldn’t have left MY baby.” Good for you. I’m glad you’re able to grasp at straws to help yourself feel superior.

      • Freebunny says:

Lol, Kim K posts get hundred of comments from people complaining but clicking anyway.

  2. Lindy79 says:

I like that he brought his dad, it’s sweet. But why is he dressed like his Black Mass character? I dont get the “he looks good here” his hair looks greasy and that parting is weird.

(also he and Sophie weren’t watching the Murray game, they were watching the Novak Djokovic and Richard Gasquet game which could explain why they both look so unanimated, she looked bored mostly. The pic you used is one of the few she’s not sitting poker faced)

    Is she sponsored by Erdem?

Why is his ring still so loose?

    So many questions

    • Lilacflowers says:

Never too early to campaign for that Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

Shudder. Mercifully, I don’t think he stands a chance this year.

      • Puffy B. says:

He definitely does not stand a chance if he’s nominated for playing a happily married man. I’ve never seen such unconvincing acting.

      • lonnie says:

Best laugh of the week and the week just started.

    • Betti says:

He looked happier and animated when he was with his dad.

She always looks bored when she’s with him and yes, she either has some sort of deal going on with Erdem or she’s spending like Katy Cambridge as that top she wore cost over £1k. For a cropped top. Sheesh.

      • Absolutely says:

Definitely looked more outgoing and at ease with the dad.

      • Lindy79 says:

I just can’t with anyone who goes to sporting events/concerts etc. and sits there po-faced, looking mostly bored. I used to organise events in an old job and I’d see it so many times, wasted tickets on people who didn’t give a hoot about being there but such is corporate schmoozing and networking.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

I used to have to attend Formula 1 races for my job. I hated it, not because I’m not a fan but cos the hospitality and corporate boxes are full of people desperate to be seen and to schmooze and who could care less about the race. Formula 1 probably attracts some of the most pretentious crowds I have ever seen in sport.

I would have gladly paid for my own ticket and be down at the grandstands with the fans.

      • Dara says:

Wasn’t there a mini-scandal about how a lot of the premium seats at Wimbledon were sitting empty because they’d been given/sold to corporate sponsors and no one was sitting in them while all the little people desperate for seats were standing in line for hours hoping to snag a ticket?

      • Lindy79 says:

Yep Dara, I did read that and saw lost of empty seats in the larger courts earlier in the tournament.

      • Green Girl says:

I went to an event that was kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing. While most of the people at the event were VERY excited and happy to be there, I still saw quite a few people who looked like they were almost dragged to the event. Perhaps it was a corporate event and they had to be there, or their SO was totally into the event and they went along so the SO wouldn’t be by themselves. It’s disappointing to see, but I can also understand where someone feels like the have to/should go to the event.

      • Puffy B. says:

Just give me your granny’s drapes or tablecloth and I can whip you up an amazing knockoff for $10.

    • Green Girl says:

I was hoping someone else would see the Black Mass similarity! He really takes film promotion to the next level, doesn’t he?

    • hermia says:

Oh, finally someone who says what I think: greasy hair, tired face, knitted tie. Enough said. 🙂

  3. Beth No. 2 says:

The puckering and creasing in that suit upsets me. And what in God’s name is that tie?

    He… doesn’t look good, sorry.

    • Freebunny says:

The knitted green tie is horrible.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Somehow he looks like a neutered member of a barbershop quartet.

Friday’s look was even worse – the seersucker jacket looked okay when he was seated and it was obscured but the seersucker stripes went in all different directions. Not a good look.

    • Regina says:

The last time I saw a knit tie was in the 70s, I think, on my English teacher coupled with a tweed jacket with suede patches on the elbows.

    • Annie says:

Loved this look, actually. Knit ties are actually a thing right now for the summer. Great suit color!

      • Freebunny says:

Knit ties being a thing, don’t make them elegant or classy.

      • Annie says:

My apologies for not hating everything this dude does lol

      • Catherine says:

Annie, today is the hate Benedict thread day. Either that or everyone’s cycles are in sink and they have PMS.

      • Annie says:

Why would anyone bother wasting time on someone they dislike?

Like I get sounding off sometimes, but it’s always the same people complaining in post after post of his. It’s moving into weirdly obsessive territory.

      • Mary says:

Annie, agree about the tie. Love the entire look actually.

      • Vesta says:

Annie, I don’t know about the others, but in my case it’s masochism.
Although, I’m a lazy masochist. Some days I slip and I end up loving him. You never know!

      • Zapp Brannigan says:

@ Catherine that’s right we are all little women who are hysterical with menses.
If only we had men to keep us in line.

      • Puffy B. says:

Yes, knitted ties must be “in” now. If you look closely, you can see Hugh Grant is also wearing one. Still, I think BC’s tie looks like it was sent to him from a fan along with a pair of knitted booties.

  4. PunkyMomma says:

    Eh. And maybe blah.

  5. InvaderTak says:

Whaaaat is that tie? No. The suit can stay if the tie goes.

    • hermia says:

The hair has to go too. And the orange bronzer, while we are at it.

      • Puffy B. says:

His “natural” auburn hair looks suspiciously like Nice ‘n Easy Permanent Color, Light Auburn 6R.

      • hermia says:

@Puffy I don’t mind the colour, but the hairstyle? Bleah! It makes him look years older. His Tussaud’s wax is starting to look better than the model.

    • Puffy B. says:

The suit looks like it’s off the rack. The Nordstrom Rack.

  6. Lennox says:

It makes me laugh how everyone dismissed the French Open pics of them both because there was zero chemistry, and now a year on after a wedding and baby, they still look like they’re being forced to spend time together. Very weird.

    • Kikuyu says:

      “Everyone” = Tumblr stans.

      • bread says:

Actually, the large gossip paper, The Sunday Express, had an article where they describe him like this at the French open last year:

“He wore his hair slicked back and looked incredibly clean shaven as he sat solo in the stands, looking content with his day in the sunshine.” (google it and marvel at the change in Cumberbatch’s apperance after a year of success, marriage and baby)

And she’s cropped out of every picture accompanying the article.

You would think a gossip paper would be straight on the scent if there was even a hint of a new love interest for “thinking woman’s crumpet” Benedict Cumberbatch, but the two of them (Cumberbatch and Hunter) generate so little chemistry and connection that it’s practically invisible.

Unless he’s staring at her like a creeper, almost every picture of them together looks like two strangers being forced to sit/stand/pose next to each other.

    • Anchor says:

You forgot to add that there’s no warmth between them, and they have no aura of coupledoom, something’s off and strange and so on.

Just foreshadowing the tripe to come.

      • EN says:

        >You forgot to add that there’s no warmth between them, and they have no aura of coupledoom, something’s off and strange and so on.

But what is it to you or anybody else if he is OK with it? I’d go berserk if somebody said that I and my husband don’t look loved up enough, or I look bored ( which I am sure happened on multiple occasions). it is my life, I do what I want. Why do others care?

      • Anchor says:

Allow me to re-emphasize my last sentence, esp. the word tripe . I meant to spit out all the nonsense attributed to this couple in close paraphrase. I actually rolled my eyes when typing warmth and aura. Might as well add the below chemistry.

      • bread says:

EN, you do realise you’re on a gossip site right now, don’t you?
Here, we comment on what celebrities say, what they do, how they look, and how they act. I don’t understand why Cumberbatch should be above being gossiped and speculated about.

      • EN says:

        > Here, we comment on what celebrities say, what they do, how they look, and how they act. I don’t understand why Cumberbatch should be above being gossiped and speculated about.

The article was about his suit, though, hmm? Yet all Cumberbatch articles devolve into “how much we don’t like his wife and how is everything is wrong with her”.

      • Felice. says:

You read her article in the Guardian, right? She seems to hate the idea of being a mother.

      • Puffy B. says:

Yeah, they’re even less convincing than Taylor Swift and her “loves”.

      • Jenna says:

His posts are usually only 50% gossip & speculation. Things like OTT insults and digs at appearance aren’t either.

    • hermia says:

There is zero chemistry, but setting that aside, she always looks bored. Always. Like she wants to be somewhere else. Maybe it’s just her French allure, her je ne sais quoi.

    • Puffy B. says:

Yeah, and this time he was forced to put his arm around her.

  7. Dani says:

Yikes. That hair and the suit and that god awful tie are really…not working here.

  8. seesittellsit says:

Boring boring boring. They look more and more like Lord and Lady Cumberbatch and less and less like two interesting artists. I wonder if she’s getting a discount from Erdem?

    • InvaderTak says:

Maybe you hit on something there…

    • hermia says:

Well, she mentioned “opera usually looks staid”, which means she’s not been to the opera in quite a while. How can you be avant garde and say such platitudes? For that matter, how can you be avant garde and look so beige?

  9. EN says:

I love the look. The colors combination is quite complex and yet works very well for the summer. Of course, it wasn’t Ben who put it together. We know how he dresses by himself.
But he can rock a suit, no doubt.

    • j.eyre says:

      *pulls up chair*

I agree. I am not usually one for a knit tie – they induce 80s flashbacks – but they do have their place and the color of his with that suit is gorgeous.

Plus, I go absolutely mad for seersucker… and I believe I have made my hat devotion fairly clear the other day. I am giving him top darts here.

      • Lama Bean says:

Oh I think the hat and sunglasses combination does not look good on him AT ALL.

  10. Franca says:

I’m just happy Đoković won. Never liked Federer.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Dokovic’s butt belongs in a Hall of Fame

    • Lama Bean says:

I love both of them! Djoker can really wear a suit and yesssss that butt.

To me Federer is just suave. He looks like he’s barely breaking a sweat during a match and I love how smooth he is.

Either could be my baby daddy.

  11. jammypants says:

This is the best he’s looked in a while. Relaxed even. I dislike the tie though.

  12. NUTBALLS says:

My first thought is that my boobs would be rock hard at the end of that match… if I was breastfeeding a 6 week old.

He’s looking rather goofy to me these days.

    • Lindy79 says:

She might not be breastfeeding though, in fairness, or pumped or whatever else is done. I have no clue.

I agree on the goofiness, I think its the weight, or lack there of, he looks….foppish. I miss him with a bit of bulk. Hopefully Strange will mean he’ll have to change that.

      • NUTBALLS says:

For some reason, I presumed she’d go au natural and nurse. Perhaps not. Or perhaps she had one of those purses that hides a pump and insulated bag. I can’t help it, when I see a new mom away from her kid for hours, I can’t help but feel sympathy engorgement.

      • j says:

        he’s super skinny rn

      • Lindy79 says:

Oh I know Nutballs, well I don’t but I’ve had friends who have been in that situation and who also found it difficult to leave the baby because pumping wasn’t going well so they couldn’t leave the baby for long periods because you’re not really feeding on a schedule. I suppose on that basis between this and the 4th July party thing I guessed she wasn’t.

      • Timbuktu says:

Pumping (beforehand) wouldn’t help engorgement issues much.

      • Dara says:

I partially blame myself for scrolling through the comments from the bottom up, but when I first read Timbuktu’s comment without the appropriate context it conjured up an entirely different image than what was actually being discussed…and not in a good way.

    • Puffy B. says:

I’ve never seen post-delivery boobs as small as hers. They look to be the exact same size they were before she got pregnant. If she’s breastfeeding, the kid must be starving.

  13. Andrea says:

I am over him. Totally over him. I will give side eye for them leaving the baby so young, and they still don’t seem thrilled with one another. Good luck to them.

  14. bread says:

He’s aged A LOT during the last year. Thin, tired and wrinkled.

    • teacakes (formerly oneshot) says:

he’s pushing 40, even lizards start looking extra leathery when they’re past the ‘youth’ part of their life span.

      • hermia says:

I could list so many people who look (or have looked) amazing at 40. Bowie (whom BC wants to play, if that’s true) despite the *cough* substances he used, looked amazing at 40.There’s a famous pic I can’t link here with him in a leather jacket with nothing underneath. He looks so hot you could light a fire. And what about Ewan McGregor? He looks almost better now than in his twenties. In 2015, being 40 doesn’t equate looking like BC does now.

      • j says:

i know ive said it before, it’s partly his weight loss, hermia

the older you get, the less your skin stretches back. so when u lose any significant amount of weight, you get wrinkles from the excess skin.

when he puts weight back on, his face will get fuller and that will smooth out some wrinkles. basically losing weight once you are out of your 20s can age you hella fast

      • Puffy B. says:

        I’m 53, and I resemble that remark.

      • hermia says:

@J We have been saying this for months now. So the next question is: why is he not getting his weight back? He’s barely been working since the Oscars.

      • j says:

@hermia-i don’t know. it’s not healthy tbh. its one thing to slowly lose weight for a role [and the older you are, the slower the loss rate should be], which hes done for sherlock, but another to drop pounds fast and keep dropping like whats happening now.

  15. Saks says:

I just wonder how many of the celebrities attending Wimbledon actually like and follow tennis…

    • Lindy79 says:

Helena Bonham Carter was whooping and cheering like a mad woman but yes a lot of them go to be seen however they mostly seem to enjoy it but probably don’t sit and watch it religiously.

Honestly if someone offered me the chance to sit in the Royal Box at Wimbledon, I’d snap their hand off.

    • Betti says:

There’s quite a few regulars – Anna Wintour, Bradley Cooper goes almost every year, the Beckhams, Tom Hiddles (he is papped but never gives interviews unlike someone) .. to name a few. The ones that go for the exposure are the ones that don’t go regularly.

      • Willa says:

Gives interview= famewho. Not interview= Snob who hates his fans?

      • ImmaNotLetUFinnish says:

@Willa lol. For some people here whenever he goes out = famewhoring and Oscar campaigning

    • Fluff says:

My fave celeb Wimbledon story was when David Tennant and his wife sat in the box for the final and started kissing and cuddling when they noticed the photographers had started taking pics of them, after Tennant was pictured with another woman and all the gossip over them having allegedly separated temporarily.

The reason it’s funny is because his wife loathes tennis. Christian O’Connell said on his show a couple years or so previously that Tennant had been invited to see Andy Murray play at Wimbledon Final, but when he asked his wife’s permission to go she said he wasn’t allowed because it was her half-birthday party that same day. Then he snuck off and watched the final with Christian on TV.

  16. Lila says:

That hipster tie does not suit him.

  17. hermia says:

On another note: can Anna Wintour please go the same way as Sepp Blatter? Or does she have to hang around forever? Are there no other fashion gurus out there who can replace her?

    • Ally8 says:

I was surprised to read she was still with the same man, Shelby Bryan. First the flirting with Federer and then there were rumors about her and Bill Nighy of all people.

    • ls says:

Where has Sepp Blatter gone? He’s still grand poobah of FIFA and will be until he stands for re-election for the election he’s called.

  18. Mary Carol says:

Sophie got regular tickets. Dad got Royal Box tickets.

  19. Pushkar says:

Not sure about the suit, colour not great, but I like the way his trousers cling around his thighs. I wouldn’t say no.

  20. hermia says:

Just seen him in Hamlet rehearsal pics and he looks lovely. I think he better stick to no hair product and no dodgy suit & tie combo. Natural curly hair and t-shirt and jeans (and doing what he loves) = healthy, happy looking Ben.

I have tickets, but am thinking of sleeping at the Barbican on the 4th as I want to see the opening night performance.
