Miles Teller: ‘Fantastic Four’ is ‘something more than soulless, popcorn action’

wenn22744851

I just realized that Fantastic Four comes out this week and I haven’t devoted any time to hating on my favorite frat boy Miles Teller. These are photos from last night’s F4 premiere in NYC – you can see some photos of the rest of the cast at the end of the post. I have such mixed feelings about Miles – he’s an arrogant douche, of course, but I actually do find him attractive and charismatic on-screen and he really does have genuine talent as an actor. I still love the fact that Miles spent most of the Whiplash promotion not knowing anything about iconic character actor JK Simmons and then Simmons went on to win the Oscar. That still amuses me.

Anyway, Miles and F4 crew (Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Michael B. Jordan) have been making the rounds all week to promote the film. To say that the film is not being well-received by critics is an understatement – its current ranking on Rotten Tomatoes is 14% among all critics, down from 20% earlier in the week. In Miles’ interviews from the past week, he seems to be preparing himself (and his fans) for the worst. Some assorted quotes from his interviews:

On comic books: “I think I collected comic books at one point in my life just because I thought that was a phase I’d go through as a boy. But it was more of a collectable thing, I didn’t really get much out of reading them. But the comic book format didn’t really speak to me. I only really dug it when they were converted into video games, like The X-Men, the one at the arcade specifically. That was sick.”

His dad is a big Fantastic Four fan: “Once I was cast, my dad revealed that, when he was my age, Fantastic Four was his favourite comic book. So I was like, ‘Well that’s gotta be kind of tricky, man. That now, at age 60, your son is playing this character that you grew up with.’”

Putting together the new F4 cast: “I think I speak for all us that I was very excited by the cast. Hopefully, we’ll be making these films for many years. I think the casting of it was, yes, by far one of the most interesting parts about it. I don’t think people saw us individually as these characters at all. But they wanted to cast actors that maybe had a footing in dramatic acting, and I think that’s served us well for the story.”

Which superhero he would like to play: “If there’s any superhero I could play, it would be Thor. Are you kidding me? For sure. I’d be jacked. I love the hammer. That’s the best.”

The hate he gets online: “I absorb it all, all the negative stuff people say. I see every hateful thing people write to me on Twitter. Because I check it. I take it in.”

Big comic-book films are never critically acclaimed? “Rarely are films of this size critically well received. This is not a movie we’re going to go on (review website) Rotten Tomatoes and it’s going to be at 80 or 90 per cent.”

F4 has soul: “We did try to do something more than soulless, popcorn action. We tried to make something coming from a more dramatic standpoint so we’re hoping that people enjoy it and recognise that we’re trying to do something original.”

[From The Independent & the BBC]

“Rarely are films of this size critically well received…” Except for, you know, every other Marvel film. “We did try to do something more than soulless, popcorn action…” Like every other Marvel film? I don’t know – Miles is such an unrepentant douche-bro, I kind of love him.

Some additional photos from the premiere. I’m pretty sure Jamie Bell and Kate Mara are dating these days.

    OK, Miles. Whatever.

  2. Hawkeye says:

I’m only here for Michael B. Jordan. Miles Teller sounds like he’s been eating fruit without washing it first.

    • Mia4S says:

I feel badly for Jordan. He was hit with a lot of stupid comments and anger when he took this role and handled it well.

Now it looks like the movie is terrible and a lot of the people who went after him will see that as vindication.

    • I Choose Me says:

Me too. On being only here for Michael B. Jordan.

    • lolavie says:

      Why?

Michael is a massive misogynist. Are you into that type of man? Putting you in your place with his backward thinking about gender relations?

      • Anon33 says:

Oh no!!! I liked him because of his role as “Wallace” on The Wire (perhaps others here did too), but I hadn’t heard about any misogyny..what did he do/say???

      • lolavie says:

He wants his woman stay at home and cook for him. It is a prerequisite for him.

      • korra says:

I hope he changes. He needs to be gagged more than Idris. Talented fella, but my god baby don’t speak just look pretty for me.

      • kimmi says:

I think that was Anthony Mackie who made a misogynist comment, not Michael B. Jordan

      • korra says:

@kimmi no jordan definitely made a misogynist comment. Broke my heart. If Mackie made one then Imma call in sick for work because I love that man.

Edit: Ugh he did. Why mackie why???????

    Backpfeifengesicht

    • Snazzy says:

Sorry, I posted below before I saw your comment.
      YES

    • Kiddo says:

I don’t know, somehow I like him better now, by comparison, since I’ve been introduced to Hunky skinny jean guy hodor and his female cohort, Cute cute cutesyface hodorette

  4. Snazzy says:

He has a Backpfeifengesicht: A face in need a slap

*My german friend taught me this the other day, love it:) and so suits him!*

  5. meme says:

No it’s not. You sold out as soon as you could.

  6. Abbott says:

So F4 is totally different from Divergent which made you feel ‘dead inside?’ M’kay, not-Ansel Elgort.

  7. Allie says:

I don’t like Kate Mara. There, I said it. Her and her sister are so annoying.

    • meme says:

me neither and they’re not good actors.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And their family owns the Steelers and the Giants, more reasons to dislike

    • phlyfiremama says:

Thank you!!! I can NOT understand the interest in these 2~ nepotism and Daddy’s money???

    • lila fowler says:

I can’t stand either of them. I’ve actually debated which one is more annoying.

      • Jessica says:

I can’t decide which is more annoying either. Rooney, for always being so mopey and pretentious, or Kate, for always seeming to play the bitch.

By the way Lila, I love your name! Sweet Valley High!

      • FLORC says:

Kate Mara played the good girl in that short lived (CW?) show Jack and Bobby. She was awful. It’s a bit amazing they have careers. The smugness and lack of depth in their acting is too much to overlook.

    • amilu says:

I don’t mind Rooney as much since she actually impressed me in TGwtDT, but, oh man, I HATE Kate Mara.

  8. Beth No. 2 says:

I like Miles. He’s a talented actor and his douchebaggery is amusing to me. Fantastic Four is a critical turd but he will bounce back.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

+ 1. He’s different from the rest of the Young Hollywood up-and-comers in a lot of ways.

      • meme says:

no he’s not. he’s exactly the same and super arrogant. all he wants is to make a lot of money. he could care less about whether the movie is good or not.

      • Nic says:

        @Meme +1000. I can’t stand this dude.

@GlimmerBunny I’m not trying to attack you but with your crush on Leo and your liking towards Miles, it seems like you have a thing for douchebags.

      • korra says:

Oh my god thank you. Miles is a massive a**hole. He’s just like the rest of hollywood, he just wears his arrogance and skeezeballness on his sleeve. Hate him.

    • Nev says:

      WORD. He’s very handsome.

    • Miss M says:

He is so smug that makes me laugh, hahahaha

      So entertaining…

He reminds me of a colleague of mine. He had the nerve to say he is a minority (white male from a rich family). Hahahahah

  9. Mia4S says:

Hey Miles! Christopher Nolan, 4/5 X-Men movies, and about half of Marvel studios say hi!

When you’re pulling that line before the movie is even out? Trouble.

  10. Red32 says:

I can’t wait for this dramatic, dark, gritty movie about Dr. Gumby, his invisible wife, and their friend who is basically a walking rock.

    /sarcasm

  11. Tiffany says:

I saw the trailer for this at the movies last night. When it was done I said, ‘Whoever decided to cast him as Reed Richards needs their a** whipped.’ Just…no.

  12. lisa2 says:

I have said it before…He (Miles) looks like a young Peter Riegert. They could be father and son or Clones.. I can’t stop seeing it.

everyone wants their superhero movie to be more than the other superhero movies.. but in the end they are all the same.

  13. skedaddle says:

    Oh Miles.

I like him, tbh, I think he’s confident and has a particular sense of humor that doesn’t always come off well or appeal to everyone. I’ve watched a ton of his interviews because he was paired with my bb Jai Courtney on the Divergent tour (and maybe he can call Jai and get advice on dealing with being in a dud movie lmfao) and at first I just wanted to slap him in the face, but he grew on me and now I enjoy him a lot.

But this movie is definitely a flop lmao. Not worried for him though, he’s crazy talented and a white dude, he’ll get another chance to do bigger roles if he wants them.

  14. Alex says:

Yea no its not good. I was at the premiere last night and yep not good. Michael B Jordan is much more attractive in person if possible. And Kate and Jamie left together yesterday so that too. Although Kate seems really close to Michael which is cool…I like them together in interviews and such.
Miles Teller is a douche. There I said it

  15. Grace says:

Kate Mara and Jamie Bell are definitely dating. Last month, a fan saw them kissing in a Urban Outfit photobooth in Glendale, CA. (The fan also got a picture with Mara, Bell took the picture for them) I don’t know what Jamie Bell’s best friend Max Minghella would think about it because Max used to date Kate for many years, they broke up last year. Also Max was one of the few people who attended Jamie Bell and Evan Rachel Wood’s wedding. We know Bell and Wood also broke up last year.

  16. InvaderTak says:

Didn’t the director say that it “wasn’t a disaster”? That’s encouraging. And appears to be wrong.

  17. Samtha says:

Considering they did 40 pages of reshoots just a few weeks ago…this movie has to be a disaster.

The fanboys who raged so hard about Michael B. Jordan being cast as Johnny Storm never noticed how awful Miles is as Reed Richards.

    • Linn says:

The last fantastic four movies were teribble, but I take Ioan Gruffudd over Miles Teller any day.

  18. Ella says:

I like Miles. He’s a douche for sure but I just find him entertaining. Plus he’s got real charisma on screen which is something you can’t say about 90 % of current young actors. Most of them are just interchangeable pretty boys.

    • amilu says:

This. I’ve honestly only seen him in Two Night Stand, but I loved him in Two Night Stand.

  19. Jellybean says:

I don’t want to know what he is like in person, Whiplash is amazing and I am happy to see him in something similarly challenging. I will not be seeing this though.

  20. LadyK says:

ugh, shut up white Jaden Smith.

    • FingerBinger says:

I don’t get the comparison. Jaden is a product of nepotism. This guy at least worked for what he has.

    • Nic says:

I don’t get the comparison because Jaden says spacey, non-sequential things. Miles is just a douche. Also at least Jaden is still a teen and hopefully will grow out of it. Miles on the other hand is almost thirty.

      • LadyK says:

it’s a visual comparison only. They both always have this really smug, high eyebrow look. guess it’s just me. carry on with the celebitching.

  21. Cynthia says:

I’m only here for Michael B. Jordan.

  22. lila fowler says:

The budget for this movie was $100 million not counting advertising and such. I honestly wonder if it will make any kind of profit.

  23. lolavie says:

Two of the ugliest men in Hollywood in one movie: Michael B and Miles. Holy christ – his extreme ugliness still astonishes me to this day. What an ugly face.

And his thumbs/extremely short nail beds are repugnant.

    • korra says:

Lol. I’m with you when it comes to the incredibly offensive and questionable things Jordan has said about women. But the man is beautiful. Miles comes from the same tree. A massive douchebag. But not beautiful.

  24. Izzy says:

OK Miles. Keep pulling out that line about “critical reception.” While MY Cap Ass keeps whipping yours at the box office.

  25. Dani says:

I want to hate him so much but he is my ultimate shame f-ck. My god. I don’t even care if he doesn’t stop talking. He just seems like he’d be so good. I’m so ashamed (except not really).

  26. taxi says:

In every interview I’ve seen or read about Miles, he comes across as a huge, self-entitled a**hole. His egotism & lack of regard for fellow actors is disgusting, to me. He has a stock smug-faced pose he uses standing with his porn-star g.f. and I hope I never see another of his movies. The way he spoke so dismissively of JK Simmons was a revelation into Miles’ character & personality. Yes, I saw “Whiplash.” Is Miles the only newbie actor who could have played that role? No, no, no.

  27. Chinoiserie says:

There was another interview by him where he complained how actors under 40 do not win Oscars. While it is true it kind of sounded like he was already annoyed that he has low changes of winning soon.

  28. Corrie says:

I can’t take him seriously. He’s middle of the road. Great in Whiplash for sure but he’s like the boy version of Kristen Stewart. I won’t given them maturity credit til they hit their 30s and stop speaking like they live for their own ego.

  29. Godhateswolverine says:

So are they just walking around and asking anyone if they want to be an actor? Poor Michael. To be attached to a project with this kid.

  30. JB says:

I think that Jamie and Kate would make a nice couple.
