Robert Pattinson: ‘I’ve often wished I had a bigger ego… to help me cope’

FFN_RAM_HeavanKnowsWhat_Prem_051815_51746799

Much like his fiancée’s weekend interview, Robert Pattinson has some stuff to say and I’m not really sure why. I mean, FKA Twigs is always doing promotion for her music and concerts, so I understand that. But why is Robert Pattinson talking these days? Maybe it has something to do with his role in Queen of the Desert, only no one really knows when that film will be released (Nicole Kidman’s still promoting the hell out of it though). Anyway, Sparkles has a new interview with Jolie Magazine, a German publication. I suspect he gave the interview in English, his comments were translated to German for publication, and now they’ve been retranslated back to English. That might explain why he sounds a tad… stilted?

The ‘Twilight’ actor – who became a tween sensation overnight as vampire Edward Cullen – admitted he always felt like he needed to prove himself as a person and as a film star, which he thinks is the reason he is so “grounded”, but could have helped him deal with things that happened around him, such as his acrimonious split from former co-star Kristen Stewart.

He said: “I’ve always had the feeling I need to prove myself: as an actor, a star, a person. That might be how I’ve managed to keep my feet on the ground. Although I’ve often wished I had a bigger ego – maybe it would have helped me cope with all the things around me.”

Meanwhile, when the 29-year-old heartthrob – who is engaged to singer FKA Twigs – was asked if when he has children, would they struggle growing up in the spotlight. The ‘Life’ actor told Germany’s Jolie magazine: “I don’t think so. I’m sure I’ll have a child that’s totally cool and confident. He or she will probably look at me every day and think to themselves: ‘Why is this guy such a weird, crotchety man?'”

[From Sunday World]

First off, I’m not entirely sure Sparkles was talking about Kristen Stewart whatsoever. I think he was talking about his time as a sparkly vampire in a huge franchise film and how being in Twilight made him feel like he still had to prove himself as an actor. Which is absolutely true, he did have to prove himself beyond the franchise. And yes, he often comes across as a pretty neurotic guy and maybe that keeps him grounded. As for Sparklebabies… I don’t know. Do you think Sparkles wants to have babies with FKA Twigs? Hm.

I usually like him, he seems like a good guy but this qoute sounds like a humble brag.

    • Kiki says:

I just want to know what is wrong with Humility? Because being humble is what make you a very strong person.

      • Franca says:

I think humilaty is great, of course, but when you say “I am humble” it contradicts the entire thing. If someone else said it about him, great, but the way he worded it it sounded like a humble brag.

    • Ennie says:

Nah, there are people who don’t have big egos, but they are not necessarily “humble”.

    • Tiny Martian says:

He never said he was “humble”. All he said is that he’s always felt the need to prove himself. Don’t get how that is bragging, tbh!

      • Franca says:

He said he needed a bigger ego, which means he doesn’t have a big ego.

      • xpreson says:

Not really Franca, he could be referring to a normal, ego but thinks now that he might have needed a bigger one to cope. I think you are reading too much in his response. 🙂

  2. Luca76 says:

They’d have really gorgeous, really pretentious, mouth breathing babies.

  3. Abbott says:

I’m genuinely surprised we’re still talking about this guy.

    • vauvert says:

Thank yo. As someone not interested in the Twilight mess, I never got his appeal. Saw him in only one movie where despite a stellar female cast he was terrible – wooden acting, single angry emo throughout the whole movie, just bleah. And I don’t find him sexy in the slightest bit. Oh actually he was fine in the small Cedric role in the HP franchise, but that’s about it.

    • mia girl says:

I’ve always liked him and his interviews, so I guess I don’t mind still talking about him. It’s a welcome respite from the usual flock we talk about round these parts. (Well I’d much prefer a McAvoy post but…)

Plus I want to see the movie “Life” with him and Dean Dehane. And the one he’s filming with Charlie Hunnam.

    • Carey says:

He has no acting talent but I find him very appealing mostly because of his sense of humor. He still has a rabid fan base from Twilight so that explains why he still gets press.

  4. Anname says:

This interview was done when he was at the Berlin film festival in February. His Anton Corbijn movie Life has several European release dates this fall. I think German release date is in September, which would explain why this article is out now. He talks about kids because he is a dad (a not so great one) in this movie.

  5. Nev says:

    So handsome…

    • taxi says:

My taste is very different. I can’t even get to “above average” for this guy. He could do with less ego, too, imo.

  6. Ronda says:

Dont worry Sparkles when you have kids you wont be famous anymore anyway. If he was still at Twillight fame the worst thing he could have done is put a child in that crazy environment.

  7. Tig says:

I can see if folks are posting how awful you are/ugly/etc, it would be helpful to have a bigger ego! And agree, don’t think he’s making any Twi references in this interview. He also has a small role in Lost Childhood of a Leader, which may also be prompting the German media interview. I wish he would sign up for a film that had a better chance of wider distribution, like Water for Elephants. If someone ever films The Girl He Left Behind, think he would be good in that.

  8. lucy2 says:

It’s still funny to me that 2 actors who seem to be so neurotic went after and accepted the lead roles in Twilight, which was guaranteed to be huge (and stupid).

    • Grace says:

No, it was not guaranteed to be huge. Neither of them had a clue it would be so massive. It was a surprise to everyone just how big it got.

I think you are confusing how Jlaw etc knew Hunger Games would be a big hit.

    • Anname says:

When they signed up, Twilight was a small indie based on a moderately successful teen book. They had no expectations of the mania that would follow – it was most definitely not guaranteed to be successful. Rob was just trying to get an American movie at the time, he was broke and happy to get a job.

      • lucy2 says:

I don’t know, the first book debuted at #5 on the NYT list and went up from there, 3 years before the first film. I remember a ton of hype about all the movies, and they signed up for the series, not just 1 little indie, I think.

    • Penis Hilton says:

I don’t necessarily agree that they had no clue it was going to be so huge. Pre filming I kept seeing articles claiming it was going to be the next “Harry Potter”. Many young actors were vying for any roles available. So no. They both knew what they were getting into. The psycho fans/interest in their dating lives was what nobody was anticipating.

      • Grace says:

        Nobody expected it’s success,

      • Courtney says:

A no-name studio was behind it (Summit) and the first film’s budget was indie small. All of the actors were either unknown or C list.

      • Carey says:

There’s a blogger named Cleolinda who wrote a lot about Twilight mania and her descriptions of the mall promo tour for the first movie makes me think the studio was caught off guard by crazy fans. Thousands showing up for Pattinson’s autograph signings, not enough security to control the crowds, near riots. Contrast that with the red carpet sleepovers the studio orchestrated for the last two movies.

  9. EN says:

I actually agree, it seems it is always the biggest egoistical jerks who have no problems with dealing with fame, people following them everywhere, recording their every move. Celebrities who are more humble want privacy but then people get mad at them, saying that they signed up for this life under spotlight and should just deal with it.
While people like Madonna, Prince, Kardashians etc. never seemed to have that problem in the first place. They simply spit on everyone around them.

    • Amy Tennant says:

I agree with him too. I think it’s the fact that he doesn’t have a huge ego that made it difficult for him (although who refers to himself as a “star”?)

I’m so split on Twigs’s dress in this picture! I like it, then I think it’s horrible, and then I like it again. Looks like a great choice for the Met Gala sometime.

  10. Grace says:

I think it’s good to have a confidence within yourself. Bradley Cooper said he doesn’t know why people think actors have big egos, because they are so exposed to criticism and rejection all the time.. and then when they become a big star it’s 24/7 cycle of lies and twisting of words. But i you can block it all out and know that you are good at your job, or at least willing to give it 100%, then you can have an air of confidence/

Rpattz’ career isn’t knocking everyone out but i have to give him props for staying sane after the Twilight madness. I don’t know how he and Kstew didn’t crack up. It’s kind of annoying how Taylor Lautner was paid the same as them when he had a tiny fraction of the exposure. Apparently they all went in together and demanded the same pay.

  11. Grace says:

Also, he and Kristen are still friends and share their dogs. I don’t know why people want to think they hate each other. They’ve never said anything bad about the other and i don’t think they ever would.

  12. Friday says:

I’m very excited for Queen of the Desert. Gertrude Bell was an amazing woman, and Werner Herzog guarantees at least a remarkably well shot film. I just hope that Kidman laid off on the fillers and botox because when her face moves, she’s a good actress — and this should be greatest role of her life.

  13. browniecakes says:

Looking forward to Lost City of Z. How uncomfortable must it be for Rob to work with Sienna after she broke up with his bestie? I am crushing on Charlie lately. Why did Ben drop out of this one? I always liked Rob, self depreciating in interviews – that British humor. He has a gorgeous profile. Seems like he got caught in a tidal wave with Twilight.

    • Tig says:

Me too! I loved the book. Best I read, BC dropped out due to scheduling conflicts- but who really knows?

      • mia girl says:

Makes sense. I saw pictures of Charlie Hunnam in Belfast to begin shooting last week and BC is doing Hamlet now so guess timing didn’t work out.

  14. Nibbi says:

is it me or is he back to looking absolutely gorgeous after a, um, sort of break? i’ve always thought he’s got a beautiful face but for awhile, i don’t know if it was being unhappy or having a few extra pounds or alcohol bloat or what, but he seemed kinda less pretty. he must be good with his woman, i m really starting to think that you can actually judge how a person is doing by their appearance, awful as that sounds.
that said, i still find her annoying- she seems pretentious or smug, but maybe it’s just her non-smiling and her hideous nose piercing? maybe i’m just jealous, cuz really he is a gorgeous, gorgeous boy…

  15. Lara Morgana says:

I think he looks gorgeous in this photo. I’ve always liked him – he seems quite down-to-earth and decent. I don’t understand why he’s drawn to such angst-ridden, artsy-fartsy women but it that’s what makes him happy then so be it.

  16. sleepless says:

I think Rob is being interviewed because he has three movies waiting to be released and so it is time for a little PR. He does not do any interviews unless it is promo for a movie. Everyday you write about celebs who have nothing to promote (Kardashians) and yet you don’t question why they are here. I was glad to read Rob’s interview and looking forward to more.

  17. Corrie says:

Can’t help but like and respect Rob Pattinson. And i just watched Maps to the Stars and I can’t wait for him to get into bigger films again. Own another serious franchise vs tween love. Or a Fincher film. He could own it and really have something to brag about.

  18. Ferdinand says:

That whole “I wish I had a bigger ego” is totally a sexual innuendo, right?

  19. Moon says:

Speaking as an actor, I don’t find his comment egoistical. This is a hard business to be in, and triply hard for celebrities who are constantly open to criticism not just over their acting skills, but their lives and appearances etc etc etc it’s hard to deal with, especially if you’re sensitive. People who have more self confidence and are able to brush critics off cope better

  20. Jai says:

What’s with all this ‘unconventional beauty’ stuff? He’s about as everyday, male model, square jaw, perfect hair, brooding, pouty, perfect facial scruff as you can get? You people freak me out. Just about Every single guy I know regards him as their ‘ideal’.
