Gerard Butler replaced by Paul Bettany on ‘horror-western’ film ‘Priest’

Paul Bettany is pretty cool, though he’s no Gerard Butler. So it comes as a surprise that Gerard Butler was replaced by Paul on the soon-to-be filmed “horror-western” film Priest, based on a graphic novel. According to My Park Mag, Priest is about “a warrior clergyman who confronts a band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece… It is an adaptation of a TokyoPop comic book, which is based in a world that has been ‘ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire’.” Yikes.

Paul Bettany is to star as a priest in a new horror movie.

The ‘Match Point’ actor has been approached to re-team with his ‘Legion’ director Scott Stewart in ‘Priest’ after ‘300’ star Gerard Butler dropped out of the project.

Clint Culpepper, president of Screen Gems who are making the movie, said he believed the ‘Da Vinci Code’ star was perfect for the title role in the new film.

He said: “I knew the minute I saw Scott’s first cut of ‘Legion’ that Paul was ‘Priest’ and I mentioned it to him immediately.”

Described as a horror western, ‘Priest’ follows a warrior clergyman who confronts a band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.

It is an adaptation of a TokyoPop comic book, which is based in a world that has been “ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire”.

Who thinks of this stuff? I can never tell if these kinds of graphic novels (the kind where you have to believe the earth has been “ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire”) are extremely creative or so utterly boring.

In other Gerard Butler news, the film that he did a year and a half ago has gotten a new name. It was called Game, but will now be called Citizen Game. Like a play on Citizen Kane. The film is another one of these futuristic bloodfests, so don’t go expecting a romantic comedy:

Lionsgate has released the first photo from the film that used to be called Game starring Gerard Butler, but is apparently now titled Citizen Game.

The picture is directed by Crank duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor and stars Gerard Butler as Kabel in a futuristic film in which Kabel participates in Slayers, an ultra-violent multi-player online game in which millions worldwide tune in online to watch him and hundreds of other convicts battle.

As for the new title, I have no idea if this is supposed to be some sort of play off Citizen Kane or if it is to imply the citizens fuel this violent game or what, but it just seems silly.

However you look at it, Citizen Game is set to hit theaters on September 4.

Yes, it all seems very silly. Here’s my question: are Paul Bettany and Gerard Butler on the same playing field? Paul is a really talented actor, but I can’t really see a big, futuristic action film falling on his slender shoulders. He should be doing thoughtful, quiet dramas, right? Now, if Gerard Butler had stayed on to play the vampire-killing priest, I might have bought it.

Here’s Paul Bettany at the People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles on January 7th. Images thanks to WENN .

mock shock bite your tongue uh fingers.

Gerard Butler is no Paul Bettany!

My god that sounds like a horrid concept for a movie

  2. kiki says:

STOP with all these vampire movies the genre has been done to death

  3. rbsesq says:

Kaiser, he did actually put on quite a bit of muscle for The DaVinci Code, so I can easily see him bulking up for a role like this.

And you all need to leave my Paul alone. I love Gerard Butler as much as the next girl, but Paul is a great actor and incredibly hot, just in a different way.

I must point out to My Park Mag that while I’m sure Paul would have been great in Match Point, he wasn’t in it. That was Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

  4. Ruby says:

I quite like him as an actor, but he’s just so… milky.

Is ‘Priest’ milky? Maybe he is. In which case it’ll be great.

(How come my comments are always moderated here? Was I naughty in a past life?)

rbsesq – Oh! I didn’t even notice that My Park error. You’re right, Paul was in that fruity Kirsten Dunst tennis one, not Match Point.

And I do like Paul a lot… but he doesn’t make me all hot and bothered like Gerry Butler. I’ve never once had the urge to google “Paul Bettany naked”.

  7. Bunny says:

Isn’t the name of the graphic novel ‘Preacher’, not ‘Priest’?

  8. vicsmith says:

Paul Bettany may not be hot like Gerard Butler but he’s by far the superior actor.

  9. Lem says:

kaiser: he’s naked through a good portion of a Knight’s Tale
between Heath and Paul I’ve seen it a blue million times

  10. Kevin says:

He was hilarious in Knights Tale…plus he was able to pull Jennifer Connelly (sp?). A little jealous about that last part I must admit.

Bettany should be playing a gym school teacher in a Disney movie. Certain actors just suit specific genres. Bettney just isn’t a believable fit. And believability is 100% of acting, IMO. Gerard Butler doesn’t have as much experience in the same film genres as Bettany, so it’s hard to gage who’s better in what. It’s a matter of perception. I think Megan Fox has more believablity as an action star than Bettany.

Where are his eyebrows? Do they have a separate agent?

  13. Jag says:

I definitely see Paul more as a priest than Gerard. Will have to see clips to be sure, but it could be good…
