Selena Gomez wishes people would stop associating her with Justin Bieber

Selena Gomez

We all have that embarrassing boyfriend from our teenage years. Some of us have a few of them, and the very memories conjure up shivers. What were we thinking? Most of us have it pretty easy in one regard — our youthful indiscretions weren’t splashed all over the internet and tabloids by paparazzi agencies. Not that Selena Gomez dating Justin Bieber should be considered an indiscretion. When she took him back after he was photographed at a brothel, yes, that was a mistake. But the first time they got together, it was puppy love. They were both young, and she was blinded by something. His charm? His hair. Not quite sure. But we all make mistakes, and Selena cannot escape the Swaggy association.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, Selena says she has difficulty with the constant pairing of her name with Bieber. She also goes into detail about her purity ring and how she lost it to Swaggy. He previously told people about this, but to hear her admit it makes me feel even more sorry for her. Not because she was with Swaggy but because she cannot escape him. How would you like to see your “first” always acting like an idiot in the press? Some excerpts:

On being stuck with the Bieber rep: “I didn’t think I was doing anything bad by falling in love. There’s such an emphasis on people being the perfect thing and then destroying them because it’s good press. She also didn’t think their youth helped things much. Throw in the fact that you are a teenager – it makes it more difficult.”

The association still gets to her: “Sometimes you have to lie to yourself to get through the criticism, and then you’re in your closet crying. It’s been like that for me a couple of times, but I only want to learn from those things.”

She got a purity ring at age 13: “I said, ‘Dad, I want a promise ring.’ He went to the church and got it blessed. He actually used me as an example for other kids. I’m going to keep my promise to myself, to my family, and to God.”

The ring came off for Bieber: “I’m not embarrassed to say that. I’m also not embarrassed to say that the ring has come off. I got it was I was 13 and I respect so much what it represented, but it isn’t for everyone.”

Taylor Swift really is a good friend: “I can count on one hand the people I could call and who would be there for me. Taylor is one of the greatest people. When I split with my first boyfriend [the aforementioned Jonas] and I was really sad about it, she flew into town with homemade cookies and a bunch of junk food.”

[From The Sunday Times]

Selena sounds like she’s come to terms with Bieber even though the association must be difficult at times. She also mentions dating Nick Jonas, but at least he acts like a civilized person in public. Are you surprised to hear that Taylor Swift is/was a legitimately concerned friend? Taylor seems like she’s swapped friendship priorities, but it sounds like Selena still adores her.

    I don’t blame her. hahahahah

  2. Liz says:

Selena has such great body proportions. I love her entire look of the black skirt and gray top.

  3. Anniefannie says:

I luuuurve her simplistic style. She always wears the swag not the other way around!

  4. MonicaQ says:

When was the last time Justin Beiber was in the news anyway? If anything, I’d be glad that my career was lasting longer than his.

    • Ronda says:

its funny because it really seems like she will outlast him, she wont be around forever as she doesnt have the talent but she is not a douchey as he is (who is?) and that serves her well.

      • Farah says:

She also has an amazing PR team that hitches her to someone more famous. Nick Jonas under the Jonas craze of 2008. Taylor Lautner under the Twilight craze. Justin Bieber under Bieber fever. Taylor Swift throughout the years. Her little rivilary with Miley also helped her. She knows how to attach herself to something popular, and remove herself when it fades. She always someone ends up being more successful because of this.

      • Josefa says:

        @Farah

I agree, she has a great PR team (though I do think the Bieber relationship dragged for too long). They have to milk her like that because, while I actually like Selena a lot, she’s kinda dull. Or dull isnt the word, but you know how Disney stars usually end up. Selena still remains classy and if she didnt have her big, disastruous breakdown by now, odds are she’ll never have one.

      • sherry says:

I have always thought Selena would have a long-time career in television. As long as she doesn’t get caught up in the hard-partying like a lot of the Disney kids, I think we will see her in “something” for a long while.

It’s not about talent, it’s about playing the show biz system and good marketing. She seems to do both very well.

The only thing worse than losing your cherry to Little Maple Leaf is losing it to Fez (LiLo.)

  5. Franca says:

If she didn’t date Bieber she would have the career Ashely Tisdale has, maybe nit even that because Ashley is more talented.
She sure milked the break up, and now she complains about it.

    • Jegede says:

      Pretty much spot on.

    • Neah23 says:

She didn’t milk the break up. Her fault was to keep going back to Beiber when ever he did something stupid and was called out, to fix his image.

    • Mintessence (the original Minty) says:

Neah23, she milked everything about her relationship with Bieber. Whether she was with him or she broke up with him or they are together again, all this kept her in the public eye and kept people guessing.

Let’s face it: she’s not that talented. Cute face, yes, but mediocre singer and actress. She’s mainly known for being Justin’s girlfriend. Perhaps more than any other industry, who you date can greatly increase your visibility and offer more job opportunities in the short term. That’s why publicity-driven romances and fauxmances are so common in Hollywood.

      Further evidence of Selena’s thirst:

Last week, Daily Mail reported that during a radio interview, Selena said that if Zayn Malik “would ever want to reach out, he knows that he could.” The timing is convenient, since she’s off again with Bieber and he’s left One Direction, trying to make a name for himself as a solo entertainer. It’s a great way to stay in the spotlight if she’s linked with Zayn. Maybe that’s why she now wishes to be disassociated with Bieber.

      Her topless, Lolita-styled V magazine spread, a hebephile’s (or ephebophile’s) dream.

She totally signed off on these photos. I find it disturbing and desperate, marketing this sexualized underage “jailbait” image. Not much different from what Ariana Grande’s doing and just as calculating. It’s either her idea or her management team or a combination, but she agreed with it. The thirst is real.

      • Pandy says:

        Totally agree Mintessence!!!

      • Neah23 says:

Who cares if she was topless for a photo shoot she a grown woman not a child. I have a baby face also that doesn’t mean I couldn’t do thing that other grown woman does just because I looked young.

I’m not even a fan of hers and I don’t think I ever heard any of her song I know her from Disney because my niece liked her show.

      • Franca says:

With this particular picture, it’s not just the baby face, it’s the way it’s styled. The wide opened oyes, the cruls, the glittery hair clip, it’s very juveline yet sexy, just like Ariana’s kitten ears.

      • Otaku fairy says:

The hairclip is definitely childish. Take that away and it wouldn’t be. Still, I agree with the person who said so what if she poses topless, (Selena posing topless is no thirstier than Calvin Harris and John legends nudey shoots, which did not get called thirsty. All celebs seek publicity and are attention seekers).
As for Arianas cat ears, they get called trying to look like a child when she wears them, but not when more mature looking women like Taylor Swift, Jessie J, Katy Perry, kesha, nicki minaj, and Rita ora wear them.

  6. Farah says:

Taylor and Selena have been friends since 2008. They because they were both dating Jonas Brothers (Taylor/Joe & Nick/Selena). I think Selena’s one of the most true friendship Taylor has. They’ve been inseparable for 7 years. Way before Swifty knew the meaning of feminism.

  7. tifzlan says:

I can’t help it but i really like her *cowers*

I think she’s gorgeous and i like some of her songs. Guilty pleasure, i suppose. I wouldn’t want to be associated with Biebz either but yeah, pretty much all the Disney kids who got those purity rings ended up taking them off and saying the same things she did in this interview.

    • iseepinkelefants says:

I like her too. At 29 it makes me feel like such a loser but she’s cute and seems inoffensive. I remember becoming aware of her when they mentioned she would be playing whatever her name is in 50 Shades. That would have been interesting and I read it with her in mind so I was very disappointed in Dakota and not just because she’s a crap actress. But Selena makes cute little films (Mont Carlo, tres adorbs), and her songs are catchy. She’s not a lyrical genius but they’re dance worthy. I love Good For You.

    • Josefa says:

I like her a lot too. Her songs are awfully catchy, I love her fashion sense, and she seems pretty sweet and inoffensive. The only thing I didnt like about Selena was Bieber, tbh.

      • Franca says:

I can’t think of a song of hers that’s catchy
The last one where she lays on that green couch is like a throwaway Lana del Rey song.

      • Josefa says:

        @Franca

Not lyring. I had Love You Like a Love Song stuck non stop on my head for AT LEAST 3 weeks.

    • Otaku fairy says:

I don’t care for her music, but she has great style and she seems nice.

  8. Ankhel says:

Honey – I wished you’d stop associating with Bieber for years, so you owe me some associating.

    • Annie says:

Haha! I was thinking the same thing but couldnt find the words to express the thought! Kudos.

  9. Mimz says:

She looks very pretty. And her story made me remember my teenage crushes and some shameful stuff I did. There was no internet like now, but I have some actual photos to prove the mess.. Unfortunately.

  10. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Maybe they’d stop associating her with him if she stopped writing songs about him? Seriously past her first album all her ‘adult’ music reads like a tear-stained diary and is entirely about him.

    “Come and Get It”

“The Heart Wants What It Wants”

    “Good For You”

It’s embarrassing and makes her look desperate, sadly I kinda knew it’d be like this in the beginning. Too much power imbalance in their relationship, she seems sweet but she’s not particularly talented and has the baby face so she can’t really sell herself as sexy. She’s still trying to find any niche and it shows.

    • Meaghan says:

In her defense, I highly doubt she writes ANY Of her own lyrics. So she’s not writing songs about him.

I love this girl, it is embarrassing at 30 but she is so cute and does have some catchy songs and has done a great job rising above the whole Bieber thing. Props to her.

      • Franca says:

In her defense, she doesn’t write any of her songs. What a defense, lol.
And how has she done a great job rising above the Bieber thing? She milked the relationship, now she’s miliking the break up.

    • Otaku fairy says:

Are all of those songs about Justin though?

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Perhaps they’re not but she/her PR person/song writer would be a fool not to realize in the public’s eye those songs would be linked to him.

They’re not girl anthems or about confidence, they’re all various stages of a girl reassuring a guy she’s all about him, is waiting for him, or can’t help but want him. If I’m remembering my timeline correctly the first song came out when they were still in the relationship but on and off a lot, the 2nd a while after her break up, and the last recently.

Since the Zedd relationship was sort of outed as an industry thing and she all but admitted ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants’ was about Bieber I’ll just go with the idea all 3 keep him in mind.

  11. My Two Cents says:

She seemed to have quite the puppy love for him for quite a while if you believe pap pics. I don’t get the horrible wrap Bieber gets. I mean, he hasn’t done any really horrible things like many celebrities have, yet people refer to him like he is the ‘evil one’. Maybe like Selena said, there’s such an emphasis on people being the perfect thing and then destroying them because it’s good press.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

If raping or assaulting someone is over the line of celebrity bad behavior (which it is) Bieber has come as close to the line he’s bounced off it a few times.

I think he’s calmed down now and I’m glad for it but he did a lot of annoying and stupid stuff that also put others in danger.

Let’s not forget the drag racing down a busy street or how he egged his neighbor’s house to the tune of thousands in damage. Singing the racist song, peeing in mop buckets, spitting on fans. Dude was a first class jerk.

  12. lile says:

I love Selena. Her honesty and humility are refreshing. Particularly when so much fakery abounds. She has really grown professionally, over the years. Love her.

  13. Konspiracytheory says:

Those daughter purity rings are creepy as hell.

    • Ankhel says:

+1. And her father took her ring to his church and got it blessed? Did he think horny boys are vampires or something?

      • Jay (the Canadian one) says:

Presumably it mimics wedding rings which are also blessed in the context of a church marriage.

  14. Seán says:

You know, just because Taylor Swift is incredibly thin-skinned and petty, it doesn’t mean she’s Devil incarnate.

I’m sure she’s probably very good to her friends and you can see she very much cares for and appreciates her fans. Insult or criticise her though and she becomes incredibly defensive. People are complex and flawed with good and bad personality traits. Swift’s come from a severe sense of insecurity and a compulsive need to be loved.

Narrowing it down to Swift is awesome/terrible is as bad as her calling anyone who criticises her a hater.

    • Otaku fairy says:

I don’t think Taylor is all bad, even though she can definitely be very petty and her defenders can be both hypocritical and problematic.
