American Country Music Awards: Carrie Underwood & Taylor Swift big winners

Taylor Swift

Even though I have lived in the South most of my life, I’m pretty ambivalent about country music. Of course I love the classics – Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton to name a few. But none of the current country music crop hasn’t done much to inspire me. I have a vague affection for Taylor Swift, but not enough to buy an album. And I really, really dislike Carrie Underwood, mostly because of her personality rather than her music.

But as it turns out, country music fans love some Carrie Underwood. She became the first woman since 2001 to win the American Country Music entertainer of the year, the highest honor at the ACMs. Since winning American Idol, Underwood has taken the country music industry by storm, even garnering a few pop-country crossover hits. I don’t get it – but I’m alone. Country music fans probably see her as the next Faith Hill, but that particular honor is still a long time away.

Carrie Underwood became the first woman since 2001 to be named ACM entertainer of the year – and only the seventh female to win the Academy of Country Music’s top honor since it was first handed out in 1970.

“I’ve had a lot of good moments in the last four years. This one takes the cake!” said a teary-eyed Underwood, her voice cracking onstage Sunday at the 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. “I don’t know what to say! I got nothing.” But she did remember one important person: Raising her trophy, she yelled, “Mike, baby, I wish you were here!” in a shout-out to her boyfriend, Ottawa Senators hockey player Mike Fisher.

Underwood also took home the award for top female vocalist, a repeat of last year’s win.

Earlier at the Las Vegas show, which aired on CBS, fellow young blonde phenom Taylor Swift beat out George Strait, Jamey Johnson, Montgomery Gentry and Underwood for album of the year for Fearless. “I think a lot of people who know me know that if I talk to you for more than five minutes, I’m probably going to write a song about you, so that being said I’d like to thank all the characters in my songs: Abigail, Hey Stephen, Tim McGraw and Romeo,” the 19-year-old said.

Brad Paisley also had something to celebrate. For the third year in a row, the singer accepted the honor of top male vocalist, this time from his home in Tennessee, where he and wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley were expecting their second child, due any day.

“As you can see, we had the baby!” Paisley joked, pointing to the pal sitting next to him, Little Jimmy Dickens – who started his career in the 1930s. “Kind of a Benjamin Button thing!” Thanking the crowd, Paisley said he wished he could be in Vegas for the show, but “I didn’t want to take the chance of missing the birth of our next child.”

Dancing with the Stars champ Julianne Hough took home her first singing award, nabbing top new artist honors – a fan-voted award this year – and earning a standing ovation from her peers. Clutching the back of her gold column gown, she took to the podium joking, “It’s a good thing my dress ripped – now I have something else to think about!” Hough, whose boyfriend and DWTS partner Chuck Wicks beamed from the audience, wiped away tears and tried to catch her breath as she spoke.

Sugarland became the first duo in 14 years to best powerhouse pair Brooks & Dunn for the top vocal duo ACM, and the band’s Jennifer Nettles thanked the crowd with a curtsey.

Rascal Flatts and Jamey Johnson took home the night’s first big prizes: Flatts for top vocal group, and Johnson for song of the year with “In Color.”

Performances by top stars included Swift (whom magician David Copperfield conjured up in a stage trick) singing “You’re Not Sorry,” Underwood performing “I Told You So” in a deep red cascade of a dress and Miley Cyrus with “Climb.”

The show broke out the big guns early with a medley led by Brooks & Dunn and featuring Swift, Sugarland, Underwood and Rascal Flatts. “What an opening!” said host Reba McEntire. “Now that’s what I call a stimulus package!”

Single of the Year winner (for “You’re Gonna Miss This”) Trace Adkins provided the most moving moment of the show, performing “Til the Last Shot’s Fired” with the West Point Glee Club, bringing many in the audience (including Nicole Kidman seated next to husband Keith Urban) to tears.

[From People]

My take is that Carrie Underwood is the placeholder for Taylor Swift, who is only going to get bigger, and have more and more pop-country crossover hits. Taylor’s album of the year victory proves that she’s got staying power within the industry.

I also think it’s pretty cool that Brad Paisley stayed at home with his pregnant wife, rather than make a big deal about going to the event and all of that stuff. Brad and his actress wife Kimberly Williams (best known as Steve Martin’s daughter in Father of the Bride) seem really happy together, and they have some great star power within the country music world. Let’s hope everything goes well with their second baby, due any day now.

That is one rockin red dress Taylor is wearing. I covet that dress.

I’m not a fan of Carrie Underwood’s personality either, Kaiser. She just gives off bad vibes. No one can argue though that she has an incredible voice. With her powerful voice, I’d liken her more to Martina McBride than Faith Hill. And as Martina is my all time favorite female vocalist, that’s quite the compliment.

  2. Wonder Woman says:

I was never into country music but I must admit I enjoy Taylor swifts Whimsically innocent age appropriate music

  3. HEB says:

Did Jessica Simpson get denied invitation again?

  4. Mis says:

I don’t like Carrie Underwood either. I worked with a guy that went to high school with her and she said she was really snotty then and I believe it. I love country music and I really like Taylor Swift…she is talented in many ways. There is no way that Carrie deserved Entertainer of the year.

  5. RAN says:

HEB – You beat me to it! My snarky ‘what..? Jessica didn’t win big?’ was deflated due to your overly clever comment 🙂

  6. Angie says:

I will join you guys on the Disliking Carrie Underwood bandwagon. She seems like a royal b*tch.

  7. SW says:

I can’t she beat out George Strait, that’s enough to make me cry…

  8. Hieronymus Grex says:

I’m sorry, I thought it was supposed to be the Country Music Awards not the Vaguely Shilling for Top 40 pop music awards ?

  9. eveline says:

despite those that dont like her i guess im one of the odd ones that do love her on this post. i do think it was deserving and it wasnt just fans who voted the academy had a say so as well, they obviously believe she was the entertainer of the year. her vocals are really great and i dont believe any of the stories about her being posted that she is a bi*ch or snotty, i dont believe rumors or this person said this or that about her until i actually see it myself i’ll believe that otherwise its all hearsay and thats not very nice i wouldnt want people saying things about me…thats very high school.people who actually do know her have always said the most nicest things about her…i’ll believe the people that know her best before i believe people who have never met her and are going by complete hearsay.
regardless of what anyone thinks about carrie she is country’s best right now and tshe’s living the moment.

  10. bella says:

im so proud of carrie and she’s a hardworking woman and it was about time a woman schooled the boys!!..before you boys get upset yes they are hardworking too, but its nice to see a deserving woman be appreciated. carrie has definitely come a long way and i admire her perseverance to conquer country considering she came in a unconventional way, i dont really understand why some people have a hard time accepting that i mean didnt all singers do that, theres star search and dozens of talent shows…growing up many have went this route actually so did carrie and was signed to a label at 14 yrs old but the label went bankrupt,so she decided to wait and put school first then came out on idol.i mean really all singers do what they have to do before they are noticed, i respect carrie for not giving up even when it was hard for her to gain respects from her peers and the industry she had to deal with the naysayers…and so on, and still some might never accept her but obviously country has and so have many country fans not just idol fans she won her country fans over by doing what she does best and that is entertaining singing so beautifull and just being carrie and by the way we the fans we actually like carrie’s personality and we wouldnt change her for the world…and she has many that love and support her…and thats all that matters. she does what she does for her fans not the haters im sure she sleeps at peace knowing that not everyone out there loves her but for those that do…we will continue to follow her thru out her very long and bright future

<3 Country music. And I get tons of stares for it. (I’m not exactly your blond-haired, blue-eyed cowgirl lol.)

And I adore Taylor Swift, her music is very age appropriate. She talks about what all 18 year olds talk about, boys and their messed up ways and wanting to be in love. She hasn’t been tainted yet. LOL.

As for Carrie Underwood, amazing singer. Great songs. Horrible little self-righteous personality.

And wow, go Kellie Pickler for looking normal!

  12. PunkCountryFan says:

I’ll have to come here more. I don’t like Carrie either! I was neutral about her to start, but she’s gone down hill from there. She is so pretentious! Pure saccarine and so overexposed! I cannot understand why country music has pulled her along this far.
    Ok, rant over.

The EOTY award was so political. The “ladies” of country seemed to have an entitled attitude about it as soon as Carrie was nominated. Everyone has been whining about how women never win and then vaguely allude to sexism as the reason. She was the most likely female candidate to win, so the voted for her. She didn’t beat Kenny C. or Brad P. or Keith U. in sales. And I was really disappointed in Reba when she said girls put on a better show. In country music that’s not true at all, at least not right now. I was rooting for Keith Urban. I saw a CU/KU show and Keith was by far the best ENTERTAINER. no stupid costume changes, no fake guitar playing, no sparkles. Now people are saying Carrie won one for the girls. If she’s the best female country can offer, we’re in trouble. While she has a good singing voice, her stage presence is lacking.

  13. nanster says:

I don’t see the “bitchiness” in Carrie Underwood that everyone else sees. I really like her. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, may sing age-appropriate songs, but she can’t sing. Every time I’ve heard her, I can’t understand what the hype is about – she sounds awful. Julianne Hough is absolutely adorable and I’m glad she won best new artist, but her music is overdone – almost bordering on cheesy. I think she should stick with dancing.

  14. Jackie says:

    Country music is officially DEAD.

  15. PunkCountryFan says:

“As for Carrie Underwood, amazing singer. Great songs. Horrible little self-righteous personality.”

    exactly!

  16. Annie says:

You got to see Keith Urban in concert?!

    <<JEALOUS.

I recently saw Rascal Flatts and they were AMAZING. A-MAZING.

They’re just raw talent, no costume changes or getups. Just raw talent and shining personalities.

  17. Mia says:

The red dress Carrie performed “I told you so” in said it all: look-at-me-I’m-the-most-important-one-here-and-don’t-you-forget-it!
SUBTLY is obviously not her/her stylist’s style. I don’t think that was a good idea. Came off (to me) as a little full of it.

  18. caeli says:

wow theres some carrie haters here. oh well not everyone will love her as long as carrie keeps on singing and making albums and she will obviously keeps on winning at these award shows, she’s only getting better with experience i think yall will have to tolerate her in the future. i dont see why people dont like her personality you know im a very shy person and many have mistaken me for snobby, i know carrie has mentioned that she is shy too maybe thats why, that is a stupid reason to judge somone and how they act because ive been judged that way too and im actually very nice…aww too bad people are so mean. anyway i wish carrie the best i’ve never seen her act unappropriate and shes very nice in interviews and such and she was very sweet on idol…so i like her and taylor swift isnt my cup of tea but she is very good and doesnt deserve the hate either…both are talented and doing their thing both great role models…not a one bad name you’ll hear me calling them….i hope they get even bigger in country so they can rub it in your haters face…

  19. julianne says:

its so funny how people think they know a person and make assumptions yet none of you have even met her and your posting rude comments and calling her names as if she was someone you all interact with..on a daily basis.
question??how many people posting comments on here are adults and how many are 15 year old freshmen in high school?…thats how all of you are acting like kids in high school.
i think carrie is a great vocalist, has an amazing career she deserves the accolades for her hardwork and accomplishments. she is an educated young women who is just living her life and her dream seriously what is the deal?? she isnt drinking or in the party scene, she doesnt have DUI’s she isnt a drug or alcohol addict and doesnt belong in rehab so why are you all nitpicking on someone who clearly isnt getting herself into trouble…you guys seem like bullies and very synical and superficial people who should question there own personalities…before attacking someone elses.

  20. Annie says:

julianne and caeli seem like one in the same, bad spelling/grammar and all. I had a difficult time understanding what you both wrote.

Either way, I find her annoying because she presents herself as someone who thinks she’s better. With the whole Jessica Simpson stuff and the whole Vegan business or having to have an opinion on Chris Brown/Rihanna.

She should stick to singing and keep her snide comments to herself.

  21. Gayle Hedges says:

Where did real Country Music go? These girls are not country. George Strait, Alan Jackson, and Hank Williams Jr.and Charley Pride are country. A few of the new male artists have the true country sound. How much longer do we have to put up with these girls whose songs all sound the same. And Sugarland. That is a disgrace. Whats with the clown hat that that the male in that duo was wearing? Lets bring back real Country and let these blond sexpots peddle their wares elsewhere.

  22. badrockandroll says:

Hear Hear Gayle!!! I am a true old school country music fan & the current crop of crossover poster boys and poster girls just doesn’t do it for me.

I am glad that you mentioned Charlie Pride. Recently, one of his older fans bought tickets on-line from a “broker” rather than the box office by mistake, and paid $1000.00 for $100.00 worth of tickets. Charlie heard about it, flew to her house in rural Alberta and gave her $1000.00 and a pair of floor tickets. I can’t imagine too many current artists doing something like that!

  23. adrienne says:

hi everyone so i disagree with a lot of you but we are entitled to our own opinion and in my opinion i respect the old country music the old legends such as dolly, loretta, george straight, eddie arnold, and other artists that came before artists of today, however i just cant get into that kind of music im not an old fashion country music fan. there is music for everybody and carrie, taylor, kellie, faith, shania, martina, leann, taylor and some miranda is more my type of country, they target a younger audience and most can relate to these artists such as myself..
i am a 26 yr old woman and i just cant relate to old fashioned country im from a different generation and it does nothing for me and quite honestly i find it very boring and depressing….i love carrie and yes i am a fan and yes i did vote for her to win the “entertainer of the year” i think she is incredible and deserves the success and recognition she is getting, apparently i am not alone carrie has a huge fanbase and we will continue to support her.

  24. Codzilla says:

Keith Urban looks ridiculous. Seriously, this is what country music has become? Highlights and flat-ironed hair? Horribly over-polished songs that completely lack the grit and grime their predecessors honed to perfection? Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, Buck Owens, and so many others are the reason I love country music. Sadly, most contemporary country artists fall well below the mark.

  25. Abagial says:

wow finally….. im w/ u guys on the carrie thing. i mean i dont c y ppl love her so much. yeah her voice is kinda good, but i think taylor is wayyy prettier. and shes only 18. She will become even prettier as she gets a little older. carrie is gonna burn out. at least i hope so. the only song of hers i like a little bit is before he cheats. but taylor has made alot of hits that people can relate 2. and her album fearless, wow it was amazing! i love taylor and she is a rising star right now. she has her whole life ahead of her, and plenty of time to keep writing, and over time her voice will mature and get better. she has alot of potential to be one of the best singers out there. I mean she beat michael jackson at the ama’s for artist of the year. she really has alot of fans out there, including me 🙂

  26. Erin says:

I love Carrie Underwood and like Taylor Swift a lot. As far as Carrie Underwood trying to be like Faith Hill, I hope not. Faith Hill never seems happy–always acts bored and like she is better than everyone else. Can’t forget the so-called “joke” that she made when Carrie beat her. I think both Carrie and Taylor are what you see is what you get. They have different personalities but that doesn’t mean one is nicer than the other. They are completely different performers, and I am glad. There is room for both of them.

  27. Taylor Swift work hard for this award winning ,so she gets.I am a great fan of Taylor for her beauty and songs.
