George Clooney didn’t give Amal a gift for their ‘paper’ wedding anniversary

Here are some photos of George Clooney in London on Thursday with Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford. They were doing some kind of promotional event for Casamigos Tequila. I kind of wonder… do you think some celebrities quietly shuddered when Blake Lively basically admitted she was pouring good money after bad with her lifestyle site, Preserve? Like, George with his tequila and Reese Witherspoon with Draper James might want to stay silent, lest anyone questions their side business ventures.

Meanwhile, as we all know by now, George and Amal Clooney celebrated their first wedding anniversary last weekend. The press coverage was breathless and sycophantic, and as it turns out, the media spent more time thinking about the Clooneys’ anniversary than George did. Not only did he confess to not planning anything special (Amal organized their dinner plans), but he didn’t even give her an anniversary present! Oooooh, that’s not good.

After their lavish Venetian wedding last year, fans were no doubt expecting big things from George Clooney and his wife Amal when it came to marking their first anniversary. However the couple – who married on September 27, 2014 – kept things very low-key and the heartthrob didn’t even get his spouse a present, it has now emerged.

The Hollywood actor said the pair simply went for dinner to celebrate 12 months of wedded bliss after “sneaking out” of an earlier event. The 54-year-old admitted that he was saving the grand gestures for later, more impressive milestones, saying: “This is the paper anniversary”.

Speaking to Extra’s AJ Calloway, George revealed: “I had to start off by [going to] a Jerry Weintraub event… and then afterwards she and I got to sneak out and have a dinner.” When the host questioned the lack of celebration, the former ER star joked: “What are you going to do, shoot off fireworks? You know, sometimes you just go to dinner.”

Speaking about his choice in gift, George added: “This is the paper anniversary you don’t want to go too crazy on the first, you know, you’ve got a lot more to do.”

You know what goes great for a “paper” gift? CASH. Bonds. The deed to the English country mansion in Amal’s name alone. Or you could even go cutesy and give your spouse wallpaper or personalized stationary or something, anything to prove that you were thinking about them and wanted to celebrate one year as husband and wife. I don’t know, you guys. Is it a bad sign that George didn’t give Amal anything? Yikes.

Also: I wanted to praise Amal for something and it’s going to sound weird, I admit that. But I really, really appreciate the fact that she wears a slip. As you can see in the photos of Amal in the Dolce & Gabbana dress, she’s wearing a matching slip. How is it that Amal has mastered this and the Duchess of Cambridge has not?

Thought she’d already got one, it’s called a written contract 🙂
Sorry but I remain unconvinced of this deathless, endless romance of the ages.

  2. Red dress is cute, so is the slip..what’s going on with her hunched up shoulders?

  3. Bonnie says:

    Beard contract

  4. evermore says:

Business contract. She probably got everything she’s going to get spelled out in the Prenup.
That huge Estate in the Berks will probably be her parting gift along with 10 or 20 million dollars once her Beard wife Contract is over.

    • PHD Gossip says:

Exactly! George accidentally gave it all away with this comment. In a real marriage, the first anniversary is commemorated with even a token gift. I’ll bet he gave her enough paper (cash/bonds) that he skipped it.

  5. Jayna says:

Her designer clothes budget, even with discounts and loaners, has left him too broke to buy her a gift. LOL

    • Santia says:

My similar comment went into comment purgatory, but yes, he got her a monetary upgrade. Amal barely works anymore.

  7. Citresse says:

George’s gift to Amal was promising to (during appearances) no longer look like he just fell out of a hammock.

    • evermore says:

He looks much happier and looser with Randi and Cindy.

      • nicole says:

Evermore, I agree he always looks more relaxed when she isnt around. I think he feels inferior to her or something which isnt good for a relationship to me. Anyway I am surprised he said he didnt get her anything, I thought it would of been something lavish, then again the way she is spending his money, he decidend no I,;; not bother. I definetely beleive she is getting that house in the Uk and 20 million payoff.

      • Liberty says:

        nicole, everything you said

  8. Wentworth Miller says:

So, I’ve been reading up on this guy. Apparently he was once married to Roger Sterlings wife. Anyway, supposedly, GC said that he wasn’t any good at marriage the first time around. So u ask if it’s a bad sign that he didn’t get Amal anything? To me, it really doesn’t seem like a big deal. With that being said, it seems like George didn’t learn anything from the first go-around.
sn: someone on another blog site said that he use to be such a private person and slammed tabloids for constantly being in everyone’s business and slamming other celebs for speaking on their private lives. Now, he’s all over. Everywhere. Talking, talking, talking. I guess this is what she meant.

    • Christin says:

Did you read about his divorce from Talia, and how they allegedly fought over things right down to a mattress?

      • Wentworth Miller says:

        LIES!!!
I didn’t, actually. I basically skimmed the article, but now that u’ve put that out there…thanks.

    • Jib says:

I think it is a big deal to not get your spouse a first anniversary present. I get that he’s older, but I’m 54, and married for 27 years, and if my husband hadn’t gotten me a 1st anniversary gift, we wouldn’t have made it this far. It just shows you are thinking of your spouse and appreciate him/her.

  9. Riemc526 says:

Why do they have to announce whether or not a gift was given?

  10. fashionista says:

Giving her WAY too much credit for her underpinnings — knowing D&G, that slip is either part of the dress or came with it.

    • Tough Cookie says:

yes, I think so too. Still I give her credit. Waity would have had it and the bottom two buttons removed.

    • Wentworth Miller says:

I don’t understand the big deal with the slip. Like what purpose does it serve. My grandma use to make me wear one to church, and by the end of service it was around my ankles or in my dads pocket. 😁

      • Flim says:

First, it ensures you cannot see the shape of your legs and crotch through the dress. Second, it stays closer to you so people can’t see up your [stiffer] skirt when you walk up stairs.

    • nicole says:

Fashionista, I was thinking the same. Dolce & Gabbana do slips just like that, I would say it was part of the dress.

  11. Christin says:

Not sure she always wears a slip (remember the VPL), or that it looks great showing as she walks. Would be better if it hit above the last button.

However, having worn similar dresses in the 1990s, a same-colored slip is a good idea, because buttons tend to cause gaps as one sits down.

  12. j.eyre says:

I realize I am neither part of the Clooney union and expectations are certainly different, but I do believe the only anniversary presents Mr. Rochester and I exchanged was on our 11th (the 11th was not significant to us, we finally had the opportunity to go out to dinner on our anniversary so we made a big deal of it.) I remember a morning much earlier in our marriage as Mr. R and I were discussing plans and I kept saying that the date seemed familiar, I must have something planned when it struck me that the date was familiar because it was our anniversary.

So I guess I don’t side-eye the Clooneys for not going all out. Besides, they must be exhausted of going all out by now.

    • phlyfiremama says:

My Husband and I got married on Thanksgiving in 2010!! So no matter what the actual DATE is, we always claim Thanksgiving. So much safer, no pressure for either one of us to remember!! 😉

  13. AtlLady says:

I am pleased that Amal is wearing a slip. When I was young, slips were a necessary part of your lingerie and made your dresses look so much better plus kept down the static cling. I think putting the English home in Amal’s name only would be a lovely gesture.

  14. Santia says:

He DID give her a paper gift – it’s called money. She barely works anymore.

  15. Linda Foley says:

He didn’t want to get married in the first place. He’s bored.

    • evermore says:

He looks stiff and bored when with her and happy and loose when with Randi and Cindy.

      • Jib says:

It looks like he is drunk with Cindy in these pics. Maybe Amal doesn’t like him drinking that much, and if he has an alcohol issue, perhaps that is why he looks stiff with her??

    • Wentworth Miller says:

During my article skimming, I read that GC was so bad at marriage the first time, it was something he would never do, again. That and having children. I wonder what changed.

  16. Tough Cookie says:

I don’t drink, but if I did I would never go near Casamigos Tequila…

    • susiecue says:

I bought a mini-bottle of it and it wasn’t bad. Just shot it, didn’t mix it. Pretty smooth but a little overpriced (hence the mini-bottle).

  17. paola says:

    Sexual chemistry = 0

The more he talks about his marriage and his wife the less he convinces me she’s not a beard.

In candid photos he always looks like he’s pretending to go somewhere really important speeding up his pace (mowing the lawn more than anything judging from what he wears) while his wife he’s all like ‘Slow down daaaaaaddy, I’ve got to show these bitches what a catwalk really looks like!’

The only way he can get intimate with his wife is if he gets wasted on Casamigos Tequila.
With a blurry vision she does look like a man

  18. Fa says:

The media wouldn’t have talk about his anniversary if it wasn’t coincided his promotion of tequila, & been on red carpet just a day after his wedding anniversary, so you expect the media to ask about that, which mean he wanted to talk about it

  19. Miran says:

My husband and I rarely do gifts either.

  20. Emily C. says:

I don’t even know when my wedding anniversary is. Believe it or not, some women really do not care. And Amal can buy pretty much anything she wants whenever she wants anyway.

  21. anne says:

is it just me or does George always seem way more into Cindy’ than Amal. (And I love how Rande Gerber is totally cut out of the photos.) And Amal could almost be a stand in for Cindy.

  22. Snappyfish says:

He has said many times before he has a thing for Cindy. Whether it’s a “good natured” joke or not, it has been consistent. There was a rumor when he paid for the waitress GF (can’t remember her name) breast job they were based on Cindy.

  23. Cam says:

He’s either grown a brain in the past week and stopped trying to sell his marriage constantly, or he’s wishing it were a two-year contract like the rest of them after all. I think it’s probably the former, because he looks too tired to go through a divorce.
