Miley Cyrus hosted ‘SNL’ with surprisingly few weed mentions: how did she do?

Miley Cyrus hosted this weekend’s season premiere of SNL, and the only takeaway from this episode is that I kind of love Pete Davidson. He should be in all skits and always on “Weekend Update.” Dude is a joy to witness, although most of the other cast members (aside from Leslie Jones) seem like stock SNL characters. Miley’s opening monologue mentioned weed, of course, and the I’ll let the opening moments speak for themselves in terms of faux-edgy awfulness. This wasn’t an effective premiere, and Miley also sang some tunes and cried over her dead pets during the performances. One highlight of the show had nothing to do with Miley. Hillary Clinton showed up as a bartender, which was pretty awesome.

Now onto the Miley highlights. The Grease parody sketch was her best skit of the night, although the bar was pretty darn low. Watch Miley terrorize a bunch of bobby soxers with crude rap lyrics! It’s a little bit funny.

This sketch features a group of SATC wannabees recreating the famous When Harry Met Sally orgasm scene. Because it sucks so hard as a sketch, Leslie Jones’ obnoxious, over-the-top addition is a welcome one.

This sketch, “The Millennials,” pokes fun at the generation’s obsession with phones and selfies. This is SNL‘s way of telling us how self-entitled young people are (throwing a phone out the window is the ultimate sin), but it makes SNL look ridiculously out of touch.

I have to respectfully disagree with you here. For the first time in a long time I watched the entire show! I thought it was hilarious! I think it is getting pretty good reviews too….
The only bad part was when Miley was singing!

I think she did really well. Pete Davidson is a joy to watch. I don’t get Leslie Jones, she’s just not very good at impressions and her jokes tend to fall flat. Taran, Jay and Vanessa are the best cast members.
Weekend Update worled good too, with Colin as the priviledged white guy who isn’t aware of it and Che as his suffering partner.

  3. Ally8 says:

The Hillary sketch was so lame. You’d think after all these years in politics, she’d at least know how to read a teleprompter and deliver a prepared line effectively.

  4. Astrid says:

Haven’t watched the show in years and I can’t seem to get excited about the lineup. Miley and her crazy isn’t enough to get me to turn on the TV. (note to self – check on retirement benefits)

  5. Lucy says:

These days I have so much secondhand embarrassment any time I see Miley that I can’t bring myself to watch or listen to anything she does.

  6. Nev says:

From her opening on it was hysterical.

  7. Kate says:

I think Loren Michaels had Miley on a tight leash. She wasn’t as outrageous as she was at the VMA’s.

  8. serena says:

    At least she wasn’t naked?

  9. We Are All Made of Stars says:

I really liked Miley with her doowop hair. She should really consider that one.

I’m old and aren’t up at 11:30 anymore, but thanks to my cat who had a fight through the patio window with another cat I was awake and turned it on. Miley looked ridiculous in her get ups while singing but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed her, she really does have a nice voice.

people keep telling me she sang great but is that because the expectations are so low? i heard a goat with a head cold.

  12. Patricia says:

I thought she was great. The singing was sweet and oddly touching. If she didnt have all the media baggage that she does, and you saw her for the first time on the show singing, you would probably be impressed.

I think Leslie Jones drags the whole show down. She is awful. So is Kyle Mooney, Sasheer, and that block of bland cheese who does the weekend update next to the very talented Michael Che (his timing is fantastic).
For me the strong players are Kate (always always makes me laugh out loud), Taryn, Cecily. And this episode was pretty good, especially the first half of it.

    So there’s my review!

  13. Mixtape says:

Wasn’t the best episode, but that wasn’t Miley’s fault–she did the best she could with what the writers gave her. I have to say I kind of liked her plastic flower dress–it was kitschy, but focused, not just rainbow unicorn vomit everywhere.

I like Miley, I really do. She has a nice voice and a beautiful smile. She is just kind of goofing off in her early 20s and putting distance from her tween popularity. Give her a few more years and she will start to settle down into her adult persona. I’ll bet she will be interesting to watch.

Miley hosting was the ONLY reason I didn’t tune in. She exhausts me. She is so hell bent on ‘shocking’ everyone that she isn’t funny or watchable. She’s just sad.

  16. stellainnh says:

I thought that Miley did all right but the writing is absolutely awful. The only good sketch was the one with Hillary.

  17. ashley says:

i thought miley’s performances were mesmerizing, i might have fallen in love with her. I actually love the sound of the new album. She’s a real musician and real talent. the sketches were HILARIOUS! I’ve watched all of snl for years and have never stopped, and this is one of the best all around episodes in years. So great. I think a lot of miley’s schtick is just that – a schtick. I don’t think she’s actually all that crazy and that she’s a very focused person.

  18. Leigh says:

She was terrible. She has no comedic timing whatsoever. When will she go awayyyyyy

  19. Ari says:

She was pretty good and I absolutely bawled when she sang Karen dont be sad – I had never heard that song before and I felt like it just ripped my soul out – with that said i probably wont ever listen to it again because of that LOL
