Cate Blanchett in McQueen & Schiaparelli at BFI LFF: stunning or fug?

Here are some photos of Cate Blanchett at the BFI London Film Festival over the weekend. She had two big fashion looks, both of which were pretty flawless. The white gown is Alexander McQueen and the black velvet dress is Schiaparelli (look at the pockets OMG). You know what I enjoy? Blanchett has been doing nonstop press for several weeks but she never relied on just one designer. She wore McQueen, Armani, Proenza Schouler, Givenchy and several avant-garde designers that are lesser known. She really flexed her fashionista muscles this month and I’ve been enjoying it so much.

The black-velvet dress was for the LFF premiere of Truth. Cate wore the McQueen for the final night awards, which is where she was honored with a BFI Fellowship, handed to her by her friend Ian McKellen. The BFI Fellowship was sort of like a Best Actress Award for Cate, from what I can tell, which makes sense because she premiered her two major roles (Truth and Carol) at the London Film Festival. Which of these films will earn Cate her Oscar nomination this year? Will Truth end up taking a backseat to Carol? It could go either way.

Meanwhile, there’s a little scandal with Truth, the 60 Minutes-Memogate film. The film is based on Mary Mapes’ memoir and as such, it is not sanctioned by CBS News or 60 Minutes (Mapes was sh-tcanned over the scandal). Apparently, CBS News is so pissed about the movie that they’re not even allowing Sony Pictures Classics to buy ad space during CBS programming! Variety reports that Sony Pictures Classics tried to buy ads during 60 Minutes, The Late Show and the CBS Evening News and they were turned down completely. Which seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face? I mean, the jig is up. We know there was a scandal. We know it involved CBS. We know there’s a film about the scandal.

I love both those dresses. That black one is my favorite.

  3. missmerry says:

    I love them both.
I would have loved to see that black one as a full-length…it cuts off at a weird spot IMO.

    • belle de jour says:

+1. Shoes with ankle straps would have solved that hemline issue.

    • Belle says:

Yes! Either chop it off at the knee or bring it down to the floor. That mid-length is just not a good look.

      The white dress is amazing.

  4. d says:

Love the black dress except for the pocket flower foolishness – it’s too much. Another stunning version of the dress would be to shorten it to knee crease length and take in the skirt. That I would buy.

Gorgeous dresses, The Detail of that black one

    • I Choose Me says:

Yes. I usually hate velvet but the detailing is lovely. I’m with missmerry though in wishing it was longer.

    Both are really pretty.

I want to be like Cate in another life. She’s so effervescent *swoon*

  8. The Beldam says:

I swear every time I see her I’ll be reminded of last weeks story that she still wears “prison gray” underwear her momma made for her in highschool.

  9. Kitten says:

    Both are stunning. Wow.

  10. Greta from Munich says:

Fabulous dresses, both of them. Cates style is so genuine and European, it’s a joy to see her on the red carpet.

  11. Cate had some work done on her face.

I love both dresses. She seems NOT to have a particulate distinctive style though, which is rare in a woman like her. She seems to fluctuate from structural to floral, from bohemian to minimalist, and everything in between without owning a personal style, nor even for a long time though. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I don’t know, but as I said, from someone from her caliber and sophistication, I’d kind of wish she would choose a style and make it her own. Like Tilda, for example. I love Tilda’s style, and her imprinting in every red carpet appearance. It belongs to her and just her.

  13. Dawn says:

I like both of those dresses, especially the black one with all the detail and how it is cut right below the knee. Beautiful.

  14. Miss V says:

That black dress would be perfect if it weren’t for the weird length of it. It should either be slightly shorter or full length. The other dress is gorgeous, too.

  15. Careygloss says:

I like them both! I think her hair/makeup in the first outfit is gorgeous, too!

  16. Lindy says:

I think she can basically do no wrong. I wish the black dress were longer but otherwise she’s beautiful!

  17. CR says:

I like those dresses. She is beautiful.

I met Cate Blanchett, a couple years ago, in real life. I used to be a fan. There’s no denying that she is an outstanding actress. But, in person, she is a BITCH. Meeting her was so off-putting, I have boycotted her movies ever since I had the misfortune of meeting her in the flesh. So, I don’t care what she’s wearing. If you put nude lipstick and haute couture on a pig, it’s still a pig. Oink oink! Lol

    • Pinky Rose says:

Lol that is quite contrary to most people and mine experience. I met her at a restaurant in London and she was a total sweetheart . Extremely polite, engaged and humble. I actually thought she was going to be distant or aloof but she did surprised me in a great way.

      • liz says:

Is “Pinky Rose” an alias for Cate B. as in Bitch? LOL. This website is called Celebitchy.com, ok. My experience with Cate Blanchett was unpleasant; imo she was rude. I wasn’t compelled to write a politically correct B.S. comment about the talented actress. I’m only one person and, unlike you, I can’t speak for “most people.” That’s laughable. Maybe Cate was having a bad day when I met her. Or, maybe she just showed her true colors when I met her. To me, it is not unlikely that she appeared to be “polite, engaged and humble” when you allegedly met her because she does pretend for a living. I stand by my story. She raised her voice at me and spoke to me in a condescending tone. She was nasty when I met her and so much so that I refuse to watch her movies anymore because her personality and rude behavior were such a turn off. I am glad to hear that your experience with her at a London restaurant was more palatable.

Mary was indeed screwed royally. I worked with her back when and as far as character, she was as genuine as they get – a rare bird in the industry who, even after years of reporting was emotionally available and still be brought to tears during a story. A lot of these people just stop feeling and wall up for some kind of self-preservation. She was thrown under the bus and it was bs. I’d watch this movie in a heart beat.
