The Weeknd has a story about Taylor Swift drunkenly petting his hair

abel RS

The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, has an excellent new cover interview in Rolling Stone. If you’ve read interviews about The Weeknd before, you already know some of this stuff – he wants to be Michael Jackson. He used to be a heavy drug user. He’s from Canada. He’s dating Bella Hadid. His most recent album, Beauty Behind the Madness, is a huge success and he’s already got three big #1 hits (Can’t Feel My Face, Earned It and The Hills). And he’s only 25 years old. In the RS piece – which you can read here – he talks about his new life as a major musical talent, he name-drops tons of celebrities and he often comes across as somewhat self-absorbed or hyper self-aware, or maybe he’s just trying to make sense out of his new world. There are some interesting details that made me rethink Abel – he used to decline interviews because he worried he wasn’t articulate enough, and he does crossword puzzles to improve his vocabulary.

In any case, there’s one particular story that’s getting a lot of attention. The section is about Abel’s trademark dreadlocks, done purposefully to look like Jean-Michel Basquiat. And it’s about Taylor Swift, who is incredibly annoying.

Tesfaye’s hair can be divided into roughly four sectors, each with its own distinct personality (front left: flopped-over moose antler; back left: tiny octopus). The overall effect is that of a rare double mullet: party in the front, party in the back. There’s not much to maintaining it, he says — just a hard shampoo every once in a while. But there are other annoying parts. “Sleeping. I wake up with neck pains sometimes. And not being able to hide myself.”

Tesfaye says the hair was partly inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat. He began growing it out four years ago: “I want to be remembered as iconic and different,” he says. “So I was like, ‘F–k it — I’m gonna let my hair just be what it wants.’ I’ll probably cut it if it starts interfering with my sight. I can kind of see it right now. But if I cut it, I’d look like everyone else. And that’s just so boring to me.”

Tesfaye’s hair also prompted one of his most WTF celebrity encounters. He was at a party for Sam Smith after this year’s Grammys, at an $80 million mansion in Bel-Air. Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran were there; Disclosure were DJ’ing. “Everyone was hammered,” Tesfaye says. “Sam had just won, like, every Grammy, so he was having the time of his life. Max Martin actually left because everyone was so drunk. Unfortunately, that was the one month I decided to stop drinking. Everybody was having a great time, all these cool things were happening, and I was shaking, like — ‘F–k, I really want a drink.'”

That’s when he met Taylor Swift. “She actually schooled me on my own sh-t,” Tesfaye says. “She was like, ‘I’ve been listening to ‘The Morning’ [from House of Balloons] for years — it’s one of my favorite songs ever!’ I mean, she might have just Googled it. But she seemed genuine.”

Tesfaye says Swift went on for about 15 minutes. “But the whole time she was talking,” he says, “she was kind of, like, petting my hair? I think she was just drawn to it — she must have been a little gone off a few drinks. And of course I’m not going to be like, ‘Hey, can you stop?’ I mean, it felt good! But when she started petting my hair, that’s when I was like, ‘I definitely need a drink.'”

[From Rolling Stone]

And there you have it. Taylor Swift is the kind of woman who drunkenly pets R&B superstars like they are one of her Scottish fold kitties. And yes, maybe Tay-Tay was drunk. Or maybe she was, um, on something else? Just so we’re clear: do not touch someone’s hair, even if you’re drunk/rolling/high. Don’t do it.

Anyway, unlike The Weeknd’s New York Times profile several months back, I get a much better sense of who he is in this piece. He seems incredibly close to his mom – he bought her a big house in Toronto, although he admits, “I think me getting my diploma would make her much happier, though.”

  1. Franca says:

He seems okay in this interview. If only he didn’t write inceedibly misogynistoc songs, date a barely legal teen and and hang out with Drake ( the last one isn’t as problematic, I just find Drake soo annoying).
I also don’t see the point of having a hairstyle that gives you neck pain and blocks your vision just to be different.

    Taylor sound like an idiot.

    • Elisa the I. says:

In German there is a wonderful word for it: Distinktionsgewinn, meaning you benefit from being different (on purpose). I guess the benefit outweighs the pain. 😛

    • Faith says:

Isnt Gigi Hadid like 20? That isn’t barely legal 20 to 25 doesn’t seem like an age gap.

      • Bae says:

He’s dating her sister who is 18 or 19 and they have been dating for some time now. 25 to 17 is a big deal.

      • Ellie says:

Bella Hadid, Gigi’s 18 year old sister, is who he’s dating. So same age difference as Kylie and Tyga.

      • OrigialTessa says:

He’s dating Bella, the younger sister.

      • Erica_V says:

He dates Bella who just turned 19 but I agree I don’t think I’d call that barely legal either.

      • Tami says:

Being that most of your growing up occurs between the age of 18 to 25 -it is.
Your cognitive brain is not functioning at 18 so you still believe you are superman but at 25 you should be aware (by then) that your actions have consequences.

      • Faith says:

My mistake! Yeah 17 is creepy when I saw Hadid I assumed it was Gigi (dyslexia and skimming is never a smart idea). I was in a similar situation at a dinner party recently when my boyfriend’s friend brought his girlfriend I swore she was 20 turns out she was 17 and he was in his mid to late 20’s it was all kinds uncomfortable.

      • Bridget says:

        Wait, is he dating Bella?

    • V4Real says:

Well this barely legal teen was already legal when they started dating back in April of this year. She also had her own NY pad that mommy got for her to rent.

    • Scotchy says:

Oh Franca you are speaking from my soul. He is gross, so misogynistic and dull. His music is dull, his falsetto is dull. Dull and gross….

  2. Sara says:

I enjoy the Weeknd’s music and voice, and I hope he gets to expand his universe and talent for years to come.

Who touches other people’s face or hair at a party? Regardless of the racial issues (which are very present obvs) it’s just so rude. Would Taylor like it if someone smudged her red lipstick “to check the texture”?

    • BRE says:

Some people do seem to pet and touch more when drunk. I try to avoid these people. I hate having my hair petted!

    • MrsB says:

Not sure what race has to do with it. I’ve been around plenty of intoxicated people who do the same thing. Though, usually I must say it’s something other than alcohol when they really start “petting.”

      • terry says:

you should watch dear white people

      • MrsB says:

No, I understand in most situations that is an issue. But, in this case it sounds like she was just f@*ked up. She petted his hair for 15 minutes!! That isn’t curiosity there, and it doesn’t sound like he was offended. I was a bartender in college, and have seen plenty of people that begin touching and petting people when they’re not sober, regardless of race.

      • booboochile says:

Yous should read Michael K’s comment at dlisted…(this is not a petting zoo, she doesn’t have a bunch of hay in her hand and he is not a goat.)

    • Wren says:

A lot of people like touch stuff when they’re hammered. If your hair is in any way different from theirs they want a handful of it, so naturally a black person’s hair (in dreads no less) would be very fascinating to a drunk white girl.

When my hair was really long in college it would get grabbed and petted all the time at parties and it drove me bonkers. A friend of mine had a shaved head and all the drunk girls wanted to pet it too. Don’t even get me started on wearing any kind of textured clothing. I had this lovely sweater with patches on it. Errrybody needed to get their paws on that for whatever reason. “Ooooh, can I feel?” *grabs me without waiting for an answer* “Wow, so soft!”

      • Surly Monkey says:

Same with lots of visible tattoos. Even though they are fairly common-place now, lots of people want to come up and touch them, as if they are somehow separate from my skin / body.

Sober people do it. too – which makes it all the more awkward.

      • MrsB says:

And guys with big, bushy beards. Everybody wants to touch those.

      • paranormalgirl says:

People have petted(?) my hair and one girl once was rubbing it between her fingers (to see if the red came off, according to her). I also have gotten my tattoos touched. I hate that stuff.

      • Wren says:

I forgot about the tattoo-poking. *shudder* That happened to me too. The worst was when one was new and still raised. Apparently that was just too much to handle for some people.

    • Katija says:

There IS an issue with white people touching black people’s hair… HOWEVER… in the Weeknd’s sitch, I’d be willing to give Taylor the benefit of the doubt, because he does have VERY outside of the average hair, LOL. Even by black standards, his hair is, well, different. I’ve seen black men with fades, afros, dreads… I’ve never seen “the rooster” on the streets of Chicago, hahaha.

  3. Farah says:

I am so uncomfortable by white people touching black people’s hair. I’ve had to deal with this my entire life. It’s annoying. I’m not your own zoo.

Anway, Taylor shared this in an interview back in February, and it was glossed over by everyone. She told it as a cute little story. It was a bit disturbing. We know she’s unaware of racial sensitivities. SEE evidence 1 through 3.

    1. The black women twerking in Shake it off. Wide eyed Taylor watching and crawling under their thighs.
    2. This.
    3. The Nicki Minaj incident.

I’m usually a Taylor apologist, but this got under my skin.

    • SNAP says:

LOL…she may have something for hair, in her “Shake it off” song she even mentions it: “to the fella over there with the hell of good hair won’t you come on over baby and shake shake shake”…though she should add to the song “while i pet your hair hair hair”… :-b

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

“She’s unaware of racial sensitivities.” This feels like you’re reaching a bit. Maybe she is just fascinated by features that are unlike hers, but can we really fault her for drunkenly touching his cool hair? Come on lol

      • ummm... says:

She didn’t ask him to touch his hair. She treated him like you’d treat an animal. He didn’t enjoy it towards the end and she either didn’t care or didn’t think to care. She was mostly interested in how fun it was for her. Which is more than a bit rude.

Also, lots of people do stuff while buzzed/tipsy that they should be held accountable for (in court and otherwise). So, yeah. I can fault her.

Please don’t make people feel like animals because you’re “curious” or it looks like fun. And when PoC explain how this makes them feel, DON’T ignore their experiences or make excuses or TRY TO EXPLAIN a gesture or feeling you couldn’t/wouldn’t understand.

      • Jay says:

Agree with you, winnie. People are majorly reaching by calling this a race issue. A good friend of mine who is black touches my hair from time to time when we drink. My hair is really fine and curls into ringlets. I think people are fascinated with features that are different from their own, especially hair texture, and getting drunk removes all inhibition so people get touchy feely. I don’t see the big deal if it’s a friend.

      • Katija says:

The Weeknd also REAAAAALLY doesn’t just have “black hair,” he has very standard, outside the norm hair. To me it’s not racial because his hair is beyond outside the norm. If she’d petted Lady Gaga’s head when she had some wacky crazy 10-lbs of extensions ‘do, it wouldn’t be offensive.

      • Hannah says:

You can’t compare his hair to extensions! Come on! extensions are fake, this is his real hair styled in a fashion that’s not unsual in black culture.

    • FARRAH’s comment is LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!! ugh

    • ValPorter says:

I am a grown woman of color, but I admit that when I was in high school, there was a girl who sat in front of me with huge sausages of brunette perfect Shirley Temple-like ringlet curls that I loved to play with during class. I did it out of innocence, and mainly bc I loved her hair…it was just so like a doll’s curls. I asked before I touched it, she said it was fine. There was never any thing behind it except that I just liked her curls. She was also white. Was I wrong to do that?

  4. Mimz says:

Eh. Not the most annoying story from TS that I’ve heard. I’ve done some silly stuff while drunk too, I try not to, but I understand that maybe sober she was curious about how his hair felt like, and when drunk she just went for it.
    Also:
    1) What he has is Rasta, not Dreadlocks. Much like what Lenny K or Bob M used t have, big chunks of hair… grown in few sections. I have dreadlocks, which is what Eric Benet (Halle’s ex) used to have, and it looks like box braids (in terms of size and sometimes length).
    2) People see your hair (whether it’s rasta or dreads) and they want to touch it because they cannot believe it is real hair, and they can’t believe how long or how pretty they are in some cases. I’ve been in restaurants and waiters come to me and ask “is this your hair? how come it’s that long” or “what a nice texture” and I’m like don’t touch my hair.

While she has shown that she can be racially insensitive, I don’t think this was the case. I don’t think she would have done it if she was sober.

    • khymera says:

Rasta is a religion and we have plenty of them here . He has dredlocks in the caribbean we call this particular kind bongoes.

      • Mimz says:

Thanks for enlightening me, in my country this is how we distinguish between the locs and the big ones.

    • I Choose Me says:

Sorry to threadjack but I have a fro right now and I’m thinking of growing locks Mimz. How easy/difficult is it to maintain? I have thick hair that curls and tangles easily. If I do plaits they fray out in like a day. Appreciate any tips you may have.

  5. Lindy79 says:

In all my drunken years I have never had the desire to touch anyone’s hair or make up, even my closest friends (I just settle for a boob grab). Why, just why?? Especially because you’re dazzled by the texture of it. Just, no.
(also people thinking it’s ok to touch a pregnant woman’s stomach…nope)

It also shows how clueless Swift is, that she couldn’t read his body language. He sounds here like he really wasn’t happy about it, and I’m betting that showed at the time…as it should.

    • Tammy White says:

You probably weren’t drunk enough lol.

    • Elisa the I. says:

“…And of course I’m not going to be like, ‘Hey, can you stop?’ I mean, it felt good! But when she started petting my hair, that’s when I was like, ‘I definitely need a drink.”
To me this sounds like he was turned on by it.
Also, I find this story hilarious. Maybe that’s TS pick-up line: “Can I touch your hair / you there?” 🙂

    • Wren says:

Me either but I’ve met so many touchy-feely drunks that I sometimes think we’re the minority. Their boundaries just disappear. I once had a guy start stoking my cheek out of nowhere and I was like “WTF?!” and he was all, “You have really nice skin, I just had to touch it!” Gah! Didn’t you learn to keep your hands to yourself in kindergarten?

  6. Righy says:

Who cares if Taylor touched his hair? I came to know about The weeknd from Tom Cruise and I’ve since listened to his song “Can’t feel my Face” on the loop every so often. Love his voice.

    • OhDear says:

People touching you without your permission as if you were a pet is creepy as hell.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Well that makes sense. Tom Cruise relates so well to that song bc of all the botox and fillers he’s had over the years. He literally cannot feel his face.

  7. Bishg says:

    Main points here:

    1) He name-dropped her cause recently whoever name-checks Tay-tay gets some instant popularity.
    2) He’s a bit of a jerk for telling this. He went on stage with her, he exploited that moment for his own advantage and now he tries to throw her under the bus with a pretty lame episode (not even drunk Swift sounds interesting).
    3) Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were AT THE SAME Grammy afterparty,

    • pleaseicu says:

Or Taylor talked about this very same incident in a previous interview and he was subsequently asked about it in this interview?

Or he was discussing his bizarre interactions since being thrust into the A-list of the music world and he was discussing this random Grammys After-Party and Taylor was part of the bizarre interactions he had?

One of the biggest pop stars in the world petting your hair throughout a 15 minute interaction, like you’re one of her kittens, is effing bizarre and uncomfortable (and problematic).

And, really, Taylor exploits everyone she comes in contact with for press and attention, if someone wants to return the favor every now and then, meh.

    • Nebby says:

      1. She told the story first, so he’s allowed to tell his version and how he feels about it.
      2. business is business, performing with Swift is benefits them both. Do you think Swift invites other artist on stage bc she’s just that nice and wants to give them some shine? No it helps her brand too.
      3. I was a little thrown off by that one too.

      • Bishg says:

        @nebby @pleaseicu

Business is business is true on both sides, I agree with you, everyone benefits from prestigious collaborations and so on.. what I was trying to say here is that I don’t really see the point of telling this very story.. he comes across as pretty lame because the story in itself is quite insignificant.. there was no real point here except maybe giving people the “Taylor is a racist for touching my hair” angle.. which to me is a bit stretched out. And I am in no way a Taylor apologist! I am quite sure she’s pretty ignorant about the whole race/culture appropriation discussion and I find her super obnoxious at times, but the “name-checking for the sake of it” is not too smart imo.. everyone does it but you have to do it intelligently…

  8. Allie says:

I love the way he said, she went on for like 15 minutes. I imagine she does that to a lot, just likes to talk and talk and not realize people aren’t paying attention to her. I think this past year or so was the first time Taylor participated in parties her while life so she hasn’t learned social skills in these situations yet.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Remember like 2 awards seasons ago, I think it was a post-Oscar Vanity Fair party (?) she actually stalked Jake G. LOL ..no, she does not know how to be anything other than awkward at parties like this. Inside, she is like an excited teen girl who has been allowed to enter in the party with all the cool kids.

  9. nora says:

I love how she can’t even look sexy in a costume that is basically lingerie.

Also, white people…we get it. Our hair is different than yours. Please do not touch without permission, it’s rude and dehumanizing.

  10. Renee28 says:

Black people aren’t animals. There’s no need to pet our hair.

    • SypherMomma says:

Thank You! So many people complaining that this is a non-issue, it is! So many times I’ve encountered this, just because a persons hair appears different does not give you the right to touch/pet it.

I hope TayTay learned from this, keep your hands to yourself.

      • Loopy says:

Not appear different, appear different from you. My hair is not strange or different, it is just not the same as yours smh

      • SypherMomma says:

Sorry, I should have clarified (Appears different from your own) Poor choice of phrase, of course I did not mean that there is anything strange/wrong.

      • Marianne says:

I think people are saying its a non-issue because she was drunk, and therefore wasn’t thinking that clearly.

    • annaloo. says:

As a black person, I have reached out and “petted” plenty of white girlfriend’s heads. Especially at parties and during hugs! It’s not an issue. I never touch my black girlfriends’ heads though unless I ask, but we compare plenty of notes about processes we go through. It is just a different experience for each person, and you should always have someone’s experience in your mind, but caressing a head of hair has always been a sign of affection in my world. I’ve had girlfriends (white ones) who have reached over and “fixed” my hair when something was out of place, I’ve had them flatiron and even roller set my hair before our nights out. I don’t have issues with people being curious about my hair, bc I am curious about others — but it always comes down to how that curiosity is expressed. You always ask (and with respect) before you put your hands on someone’s person in anyway. Our world could be better if we all reached out and had more consensual touch in our lives, maybe.

  11. Lindy79 says:

That last picture of her performing with him, she looks like one of those paper game things where you placed clothes over the doll and pushed down the tab to hold it in place.

  12. ria says:

How often is ‘…. Once in a while ‘
A Friend of mine lives on Jamaica, he says shampooing weekly or the hair starts to get little things in it.

As for sleeping without Problems, i saw a couple of weeks ago the Shogun movies again, and the Japanese Ladys with their done-up Hair were sleeping with their head not entirely resting on an little Neckbank, an Omake or a Makura, that fully supported the Neck.

    🙂 😉

  13. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I would have felt uncomfortable in his situation – a person you barely know is drunkenly petting you like a cat – on the head, which is condescending, and there’s the racial thing. It’s intrusive, entitled and weird. If I’m tipsy, I might pat someone’s arm, and I hope that’s ok. But touching someone’s head is off limits. I’m blonde and when I was young, a lot of people patted me on the head. They meant it kindly, I guess, but it felt condescending and intrusive to me. I think she should know better.

  14. lile says:

Did you miss the part where he said he liked it? Anywho, I would have wanted to touch it too, but I would have asked first. His hair kind of fascinates me, as it obviously does TS. I didn’t know he modeled it after someone and I probably would have asked that too. Especially if I was drunk…

  15. Sumodo1 says:

So The Weeknd never did anything foolish when he was drinking/drugging? He’s just pissed he can’t get drunk anymore.

  16. Wren33 says:

When I was that age and drunk, I would skip the hair petting and just go straight to kissing random people. But I think the message “never, ever touch a black person’s hair” has been hammered into my brain enough that it even penetrates through many layers of alcohol.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I once stood on a table and sang New York New York at a wedding. That was pretty ugly.

  17. Hannah says:

This happens to my friend too. She’s a mixed raced girl with big beautiful hair. White girls will literally just be like omg I love your hair and start touching it when they are drunk. It’s incredibly patronising and quite intrusive. I don’t get why people think it’s appropriate to start touching someone’s hair in the first place, and then there’s the racial aspect to it. Just ugh.

    • Birdix says:

Not to minimize, because that’s definitely annoying. My brother’s best friend had a buzz cut for a while and said it was like a magnet for drunk girls (or maybe e was involved?) because they wanted to run their hands over it.

  18. Birdix says:

Well he was smart–the story got everyone talking, got him on the radar (for his hair at least). All the middle schoolers around here are making up lyrics to his song–my favorite so far is “I can’t feel my toes in my pointe shoes, … but I love it.”

  19. kri says:

She petted his hair. Drunkenly. I wonder if she has some weird fantasy where she dresses him like Holly Hobby and has tea parties with him and the cats. NO ONE TOUCH ANYONE’S HAIR UNLESS YOU ARE A STYLIST OR THEIR SO.

  20. Veronica says:

Very….odd. It makes me cringe a little, but I would hope there’s some hyperbole there and she was just hammered to the point of no inhibition. Otherwise, yikes.

  21. Daria Morgendorffer says:

….But how does an article about The Weeknd become entirely about Taylor Swift? Breaking news: people do dumb shit while drunk. All of these people who hang out in the same group are in their early/mid twenties. Everyone does stupid shit in their early/mid twenties. I don’t particularly like or dislike Taylor Swift, but this is really reaching. I’ll say this much though–homegirl has a serious need to be liked. Going up to people and praising them for 15 minutes at a time? Why not just beg them to be your friend? She’s excessive.

Same age difference between Bella Hadid and Abel as Kylie and Tyga. No tongues are wagging over them though. Just an observation.

    • FingerBinger says:

It became about Taylor Swift to get clicks. That’s the reason her name is in the headline.

    • Jayna says:

Bella was out in the workforce modeling and had her own place in NY when she began dating him.

Kylie was 17, underage, and still living at home with her parents in high school (supposedly). And that was for the year of her being age 17, not just on the cusp of turning 18. And let’s face it, I think she was still 16 when he had his eye on her. He wasn’t just 25. He has a child also.

    • jwoolman says:

Well, I don’t think he’s singing the details about having sex with her. That might be the difference. She also wasn’t underage when they dating. Kylie also acts and talks younger than she is and seems so exploitable.

  22. WinnieCoopersMom says:

“Taylor Swift is the kind of woman who drunkenly pets R&B superstars like they are one of her Scottish fold kitties.” This made me LOL so hard!! I think this situation is funny to us bc we can so picture her doing this.

I kind of like drunk Taylor…rambling on about music and her inspirations. Last year, one of her friends (cant remember which one) was saying how Taylor will get drunk on wine and cry about Joni Mitchell. I think that’s hilarious bc she is such a dork..and I really think most girls in their 20s can cry and be dorks about certain things when drunk. I can’t relate to the hair-petting thing, but doing stupid shit while drunk, come on. We have all been there.

  23. Tacos and TV says:

She probably had a coke salad with a sprinkle of E on it! Just to spice things up. I can’t stand Taylor Swift Bangs!

The weekend seems chill. I do question his relationship, but I already exhausted my “ewww gross, she’s a teenager” rants on Kylie Jenner and Mr. Stimulated!

  24. Corrie says:

OMG his write up of the experience is hilarious. Oh, I hate petters. But real talk – go read the rest of the intw because theres so much more there regarding Abel.

  25. So, I have never had anyone pet me before…. until literally last week…

So prior to that I had my hair straighted or under a awesome lace front (lol) and the Vietnamese lady at my fav Pho place was like WAIT THAT’S YOUR HAIR (really curly coily kinky… all in ONE strand) …. and then comes up before i can stop her and starts to touch and smell my monster coily bun not aggressively but i guess obnoxiously and was like its sooooo pretty…. and smells amazing…. then she was like what do you do to it…. asking all my hair secrets like that lol

Prior to that I did have my white (Girlfriend -show type) friends casually find ways to touch my hair when it was pressed out and long…. almost like they couldnt believe it was my hair…..that was a grrrr inducing moment…

  26. Lucy says:

Even though I’m aware of how problematic some of his lyrics are, I can’t help but to be obsessed with his music. He’s crazy talented, and seems quite charming. LOL at the Taylor story!!!
