Julia Roberts: Jennifer Lawrence is ‘a young, fabulous, talented whippersnapper’

Here are some photos of Julia Roberts at last night’s premiere of Secret in Their Eyes. Julia wore what has become her premiere-red-carpet uniform, a minidress with a menswear-style jacket. This time the jacket is Givenchy. Even though we’ve seen this look from Julia many times before, I do think she looks nice here. I’m glad she seems to be bringing back the red – she was a terrible shade of blonde for too long.

Julia has been giving some interviews lately to promote Secret In Their Eyes, which also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman. I’m genuinely surprised that everything hasn’t been all about Julia, all the Julia-time. I think she’s off her game a little bit because every interview I’ve seen with her in the past month has been about her marriage and how strong it is. She’s trying hard to convince everyone of that, which makes me wonder if the opposite is true. Anyway, Julia sat down with GMA yesterday and in between effusing about Danny Moder (eyeroll), Julia deigned to say words about Jennifer Lawrence. Back in 2013, when Julia was asked about J-Law’s entrance into The America’s Sweetheart Club, Julia said she thinks J-Law is “too cool” to be America’s Sweetheart. I thought Julia came off as slightly patronizing then. I think the same thing now.

Julia Roberts is welcoming Jennifer Lawrence into the America’s sweetheart fold with open arms.

“I applaud her,” Roberts told Michael Strahan during a Good Morning America interview, saying she’s a fan of Lawrence’s wage-gap essay. “She’s a young, fabulous, talented whippersnapper and I love that she’s stirring things up,” Roberts said. “I mean, she just – she’s so energetic and seems to speak her mind, and I think it’s great. I think it’s great to kind of shake things up. I think it’s great to go, ‘Excuse me. Over here. I know something now and I’m frustrated by it and why is this?’ ”

And Roberts sees some similarities in herself.

“I feel like part of my personality is ferocious, and part of my personality is the greatest power you can wield toward an enemy is to ignore their existence,” Roberts, 48, said.

The Oscar winner also talked about working alongside her cinematographer husband Danny Moder on the upcoming drama Secret in Their Eyes.

“I try to impress him so much,” she admitted. When Strahan questioned why, the Oscar winner had a simple response: “He’s my person. Part of it is we would spend the whole day together and by the time we get home we’re not talking about work – it was just all about the kids, which was just amazing.”

[From People]

“She’s a young, fabulous, talented whippersnapper…” Hm. I could parse that all day long. I guess I’ll choose to take it at face value, that Julia admires the younger America’s Sweetheart and Julia sees herself in J-Law. Perhaps that’s why Julia likes J-Law, because Julia loves Julia and all things Julia. Perhaps “going ass over tea kettle” is the new goose-honk.

I hate those kinds of sandals.. and I feel like Julia has worn this look over and over and over. That long blazer over a shorter dress or skirt. Sometimes I feel like celebrities drop names of the current IT person to get attention. or to court their fanbase.

    • Loopy says:

I think the journalist is the one that asked her, why would she just randomly say that.

    • eva says:

“I hate those kinds of sandals.”

Me too, they always look like their feet are going to slide out the front.

    • Ullevall says:

Julia’s been there done that. Julia is going into almost 30 YEARS as a world Worldwide Superstar and movie Icon. I don’t think it’s even a contest, except one that the press is always trying to create!

  2. Loopy says:

I have just actually realized I don’t think any black actress has ever been in the America’s Sweetheart Club.

    • Ullevall says:

Halle was said to be in the minds of the public by some,,,(maybe her or team? …not sure though) but for a really SHORT window just after the Academy Award, but the money certainly never equaled it, especially after the Cat woman bomb at the box office. Then she ruined her image with all the drama, fighting, nonsense.

I heard on a discussion about the movie Gravity that Halle wanted to get Sandra’s Bullocks role in Gravity, she allegedlypushed behind the scenes but she wasn’t ever a factor in even interviewing for it, she was considered too unpopular and unbankable and the director wanted Sandy anyway.

Julia always seems smug and patronizing to me. I prefer JLaw with all her faults. And Julia has even worse style then JLaw

  4. NewWester says:

Did Julia at any point say how she would like to work with Jennifer?

  5. Nancy says:

Welcome back Julie. Ugh. I’m quite sure she has no love for Jennifer. She always had to be “the one.” She literally made Aloe Vera as she called her, seem like the bad guy as she took her husband away from her. Now with this new movie, she’ll be on here every day. I’m one of the ones that was mystified by the popularity of Pretty Women. Let’s take a hooker and make her a lovable heroine. It was all about Richard Gere to me, she was just the loud mouth giggling like a moron in the background. Yipes, I’m mean today, more coffee please.

    • Nicolette says:

Loved Pretty Woman when it came out but now if it’s on it’s been reduced to watch it if absolutely nothing else is on for me. And even that’s rare thanks to Netflix. Still love the red dress she wears to the opera though. Now Steel Magnolia’s is a different story. Love it. Always have always will. That movie has so many great lines and I love how those ladies could throw shade with a smile. It’s perfect.

      • Nancy says:

Nicolette: I have to agree on Steel Magnolias. Classic, cry every time I see it. Like a lot of actresses, I like their early work before they get famous and all full of themselves. I can honestly say I don’t have any other favorite Julia movies, tho. I find her cloyingly annoying. Maybe she’s mellowed with age, I’ll give her that.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I wish Julia wouldn’t dress like she thinks she’s having a fat day. That look is so dated. I don’t mind her and am always startled at how much people on here hate her, but I admit I’m skeptical of her comments about JLaw. I wonder if she’s really that enthusiastic.

    • Lensblury says:

“like she thinks she’s having a fat day” – that’s exactly what I was thinking. Generally: co-sign on that post, except I actually do kind of like her. To me she seems a little cary-cray and entitled, but I don’t think she’s evil. About the “whippersnapper”: I think the words someone chooses can be more revealing than they ever intended. Just say that word and pay attention how it feels to say it – lots of sharp, plosive and hissy sounds, and also rather belittling. May have given away her real opinion. Who knows, maybe she actually wants to like JLaw, but she’s having a hard time getting over herself and learning to “share”.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t mind her to like her fine. Lol. I thought your assessment of her attitude towards Jennifer was good.

  7. Skyblue says:

Who says whippersnapper? Whippersnapper should be banned from all conversations along with “old fart” and “old fogie”. Now I’m the one who needs another cup of coffee.

  8. Talie says:

Yes, you didn’t imagine it, she sounds salty as hell. If she ever was in the same room as Jennifer, it would be a fight for attention.

    • CORA says:

Yeah I would definitely watch a Valley of the Dolls remake with Jlaw as Neely O’Hara, and Julia as Helen Lawson.

I can see the whole bathroom flushing of the wig scene, clear as day. It would be fabulous.

Why doesn’t someone remake THAT film? We’ve had a Flintstones, and a bewitched and theyre even talking of remaking Twilight (ugh) but no Valley of the Dolls?! If women and gay men ran Hollywood we’d have had one 10 years ago.

      • Kelly says:

That is totally it. I think Jennifer is totally what Julia wanted to be at that stage of her career except the whippersnapper is the real deal.

I used to loose Julia Roberts, but I can’t stand the “I’m one of the boys and so cool” attitude.

        Plus she’s a bad dresser.

  9. Crumpet says:

I feel like ‘whippersnapper’ is the Georgia coming out in her. I think it was a pretty harmless remark.

Julia is struggling with what all beautiful women struggle with as we age. It can be tough to see all the attention going to younger women – the attention and hoopla you used to get fading away.

    • Nancy says:

She always talks like that. She named her daughter Hazel….you’re right, it’s probably the Georgia in her. She sat on a panel years ago before Pink was famous and goofed on her name. She said what does your mom say: Pink it’s time for dinner. Shoot, that’s just a stage name, better than witch hazel. A big shout out to any Hazels out there, I don’t dislike the name, just Julia! I sound like such a hater, but I don’t forget things I saw or read….and that woman just made mincemeat out of Danny Moeder’s wife to give him a divorce. Not to mention what she did to Jason Patrick, Kiefer Sutherland, Lyle Lovett and Benjamin Pratt, her brother Eric and reportedly her deceased sister. Obviously not a fan. Mean girl.

  10. candice says:

I don’t watch GMA but thought Michael Strahan’s role on the show was to provide a sports-related presence, hence I am surprised he would be conducting celebrity interviews – wouldn’t that be more Lara Spencer’s domain?

  11. Lucy says:

All I have to say here is that I HIGHLY, highly recommend watching the original movie from which this one was adapted. It’s the same name, but in Spanish (El Secreto De Sus Ojos). It features some of Argentina’s most talented and prestigious actors.

    • Pablo says:

      Yes! It’s fantastic!

At first I didn’t know it was a remake and I was really pissed off the were chosing the same title of one of the best movies I’ve seen.

And I don’t know how are they going to make it as good without the same political background We’ll see.

    • Cran says:

@ Lucy totally agree. El Secretos de Sus Ojos was the best. I will NOT see the remake. I’m pissed at the idea. I came across it because I saw Nine Queens and developed a mad crush on Ricardo Darin.

      Nine Queens is awesome.

  12. Christin says:

I don’t think her ‘hot’ husband is gong anywhere, at least until the kids are older.

I don’t thigs may be as rosy as she tries to portray, but at the same time, he seems like a weak guy who knows where his bread is buttered.

  13. Rhiley says:

That line, “He’s my person,” sounds like how that hippie, vampire couple talk about each other. I don’t remember their names, and I am too lazy to google, but they are really eye rolly and barf inducing.

  14. Sarah01 says:

Looool she took some good digs there, “I know something now”
I don’t like Julia but over the years it’s obvious she’s one smart cookie and is quite ferocious.

  15. hogtowngooner says:

Can’t stand the woman after the “A Low Vera” husband-stealing thing, but daaaaamn her face/makeup looks good here.

  16. those Jlaw pics are giving me Kim Noviak…. 60s style

  17. Janey says:

Isn’t Jennifer sort of Julia’s heir to that box office Americas sweetheart crown? But with much more critical praise.

No pictures of chiwetel from the premiere??

  18. Argirl says:

Please, please stop with the “says some words!” It is too lazy and painful to read.

  19. What's inside says:

Julia has absolutely no sense of style, never has, never will. As for her personality, there have been a number of things written about how evil she can be as well as her penchant for man-poaching. When she starred with Brad Pitt in the movie The Mexican, it is a wonder she didn’t go after him. I was taking bets then that she would.
