Will Smith rocks the Latin Grammys and returns to his rapping roots

In “What year is this?” news, Will Smith is putting on his crown and hitting the stage once again as the Fresh Prince. The 47-year-old actor and rapper took the stage at the Latin Grammys last night performing “Fiesta” – a new collaboration with Colombian group Bomba Estéreo. The song marked Will’s first recording in a decade, but he definitely won over the crowd, rapping in English and Spanish.

Last night’s performance comes on the heels of Will announcing that he and DJ Jazzy Jeff are planning to go on tour. Will’s film career has kind of slowed down (his latest effort, Focus, got a lukewarm reception from audiences) and I’m sure Jeff doesn’t have anything better to do. Besides, musical talent runs through the blood of the Pinkett-Smith clan – everyone has rocked the mic, even Jada tried, bless her heart. Will talked about the plans for his tour on a recent episode of the Ellen DeGeneres show.

We never actually had a chance to go out and do a full tour. So, we released our first record in 1986…Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble was our first record, but by 1990 I was already on The Fresh Prince. So, in that time, we just we were getting started and I never actually had a chance to go on tour, so I really want to get out there and do it for real.

[From E!]

The duo recorded 5 studio albums and had a string of hits, including “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble”, “Nightmare on My Street” and “Summertime”. Their last album together was 1993’s Code Red (with the insanely catchy “Somethin’ Like Dis”) and Will hasn’t recorded a solo song in a decade. But, is the world ready for a comeback?

High school Corey would be so excited to see this reunion…I still have my 45 (for those of you under 30, that’s a vinyl record) of “Parents Just Don’t Understand”, but can a middle aged DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince still rock the crowd? I would be totally down for this if they brought along Alfonso Ribeiro. It would be magic…like this reunion on the Graham Norton show in 2013 (just skip to the 3:50 mark to get your Carlton on.) Oh, who am I kidding? Take my money.

I would absolutely see these guys – separate or together.

Let’s carpool- and by carpool I mean rent a large vehicle that allows you to drink in the backseat.

Definitely. For the nostalgia factor at the very least. I think his career has cooled more or less because of his personal life (COS) but not because he doesn’t do something well. If anything – I’m confident he’ll put on an amazing show.

  2. Migdalia says:

    Definitely buying a ticket.

Contrary to popular belief, Jazzy Jeff stays busy. He’s still in his DJ roots and I’ve been to a few gigs where he is DJing. He’s still got it.

I love this, he seems really happy to be back on stage again. He always had this real sense of joy and being in his element when he was rapping – I do think he’s a good actor but it’s great to see him having so much fun with this.

  5. Lurker says:

I loved his show in high school and he’s definitely got some talent. He’s such an odd dude now. That’s all I got.

I hope he plans to stick to his other songs, because this one is… Not good at all.

I just don’t know! I watched Fresh Prince at the time it was on and now just find it totally and utterly embarrassing. I listened to the music that was popular by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince but never bought a whole album. The song Summertime is STILL 25 years later my summer jam. This song, however, is not good so they’d have to do mostly old stuff. Not sure how I feel about new Will Smith rap songs…

I saw them back in the day, they opened for Run DMC. I’m there for a new tour! A friend at the time was married to one of the Run DMC people, so I got to party with Will. Nice guy, very down to earth. I like the new song.

Jeff actually has been DJ’ing for quite awhile now. But, yeah, I am on this one.

  11. serena says:

He often choses bad film projects, but he’s a good actor and a great performer. So yeah, I’d listen to his rap again.. he was great and I think he still got it!

Ugh all I see is are Jada’s boobs in that dress, covered (barely) by the dress lace design. Kind of creeps me out that Jaden is there and mamas tatas are out there for display.
