Alicia Vikander’s biggest awards competition might be… Kristen Stewart?

Here are some photos of Alicia Vikander at last night’s Moet British Independent Film Awards. I’m assuming her gown is Louis Vuitton, just because she’s been wearing LV to every major red carpet this year, and she’s one of the faces/brand ambassadors of LV. I actually like the dress a lot, more than I usually like her in the endless LV dresses and gowns. My problem is that I feel like she isn’t really bringing it with her styling. She seems to prefer a rather “undone” look, which is fine in general, but I would like to see her mix it up every now and then and go for a stronger, more red-carpet ready look.

Alicia was nominated for Best Actress at the British Independent Film Awards for her work in The Danish Girl… but not Ex-Machina. It ended up a mixed bag, with Ex-Machina taking home Best Picture but Vikander losing the Best Actress Award to Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn. I tend to think the Best Actress race is firming up a little bit – critics are in love with both Brie Larson and Saoirse, plus Cate Blanchett is predictably in the mix. If Alicia’s nominations come in the Best Actress category, she’s not going to win much of anything.

Speaking of, Alicia’s name wasn’t mentioned at all last week as the National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Circle announced their awards lists (Saoirse Ronan and Brie Larson seem to be coming out swinging, as I said). It’s not that I was worried that Alicia wouldn’t be recognized at all, it’s just that The Danish Girl is a particular kind of Oscar-bait movie, and I wasn’t surprised that the critics were largely ignoring it for the most part. But wouldn’t you know… on Sunday, the Los Angeles Critics Association decided to give Alicia their Best Supporting Actress Awards. The runner-up? Kristen Stewart – the same Kristen who will be taking home the NYFCC Supporting Actress Award AND the Boston Critics Award. Who knew Kristen would be such a contender this year? No, really. Is Kristen an undercover contender?

The SAG and Golden Globe nominations come out this week (Wednesday and Thursday, respectively) and I do expect to see Alicia’s name on both lists. But it definitely feels like… she would have a fighting chance at some awards in the supporting category, but she has NO chance if she’s nominated for a lead actress.

  1. Don't kill me I'm French says:

1/ Alicia doesn’t know to pose
2/ The critics are trolling us even If Stewart is really good in Sils Maria ( very natural,at ease ) but seriously the movie is not credible

    • miki says:

srsly, I can not believe this is happening! I guess critics love KStew’s stick (which is almost the same performance in most of her films), but I’ll be srsly ‘WTAF????’if she gets a nom on serious awards

    • ell says:

i don’t understand the sils maria thing. i thought kristen was great in it, but it’s a film from last year??

    • Tiny Martian says:

I honestly don’t get the overwhelming critic love for Kristen in Clouds. Yes, she was good……but there have been so, so many more powerful performances by women in supporting roles this year. Critics choosing Kristen over Rooney Mara and Joan Allen? And what about Helen Mirren, and Elizabeth Banks? Or Dakota Johnson, for Black Mass? I haven’t even heard their names mentioned, but all gave much stronger performances than Kristen’s in Clouds!

      • Penelope says:

Dakota Johnson for Black Mass – LOL. Maybe Julianne Nicholson if you want to nominate a female from Black Mass.

  2. Sarah01 says:

Love her skin tone and style she keeps it classy.

    • Mia says:

      It’s a fake tan.
She is actually quite pale with a yellowish undertone.

      • Don't kill me I'm French says:

Really ? Even in Royal Affair and Anna Karenine, she is tanned

      • ell says:

receipts? all the photos i’ve seen she looks like that.

      • TreadStyle says:

Pale and yellow, she still has the best skin I’ve seen! She does look super sleepy though… I feel like she is traveling constantly and this legitimate lack of sleep, dark circles face!

      • Amelia says:

Well, if anyone’s got a label on the fake tan please shout it out!
Her skin always looks flawless, so dewy and healthy. Very envious!

      • Lotta says:

I don’t think so, she had the same skintone as a teenager when she starred in the swedish soapopera Avenyn.

      • qwerty says:

        I’d like some proof too.
Her skin is amazing, it’s the reason I clicked on this article lol

    • Carol says:

I usually like Alicia’s eclectic style but this time….meh. It’s too….plain. I love underdone looks but somehow this one is missing something. Maybe a bright red lipstick? A bangle?

BTW – her skin is gorgeous, fake tan or real.

  3. roses says:

If IFC Films gives her a little push I think Stewart can be nominated. She had some really strong reviews for the film and the critics seemed to love her in the role. So yeah it may be happening for her.

    • Algernon says:

IFC is notorious for not spending money on award campaigns. Beyond sending out DVD screeners, they’re not giving KStew a push, little or otherwise. And since it’s not like Kristen’s been out campaigning, the awards she’s getting mean that critics actually remember and like her performance in Clouds of Sils Maria (I thought she was the best part of an otherwise boring movie).

      • Tracy says:

#Algernon It’s nice Kristen is getting awards with no push from IFC. I love Kristen and want her to win, but I would love any actress getting awards, with no studio push.

  4. Betti says:

Love the dress and she wears it well. Am so digging Domnhall Gleason – yumm

  5. McLori says:

Do we not know for sure yet which one Harvey is buying the Oscar for?

  6. Neelyo says:

I haven’t seen her in anything but Vikander always looks like she just woke up. I can’t imagine she’s got the energy to act.

    • Eggland's worst says:

I think she always looks bored.

      • AJ says:

Yeah, she looks like a bored 12 year old because she never bothers to put any effort into her hair/make up or outfits.

    • ell says:

i’ve seen her in ex machina and she was good. i think what put people off her is the whole it girl thing. it does backfire and people tire of you before you’ve even had a chance.

      • Val says:

Yeah she was everywhere all of a sudden and I hadn’t even seen any of her movies. I think what turns most people off her is that 1) She hasn’t done that much and yet she is over over hyped and 2) Her desert-level thirst and comments about how she’s “ready to be more well known”.
That’s what turns me off her, tbh. Though she seemed cute in those 2 scenes in Burnt.

  7. Loo says:

It would be cool if Stewart got an Oscar nomination because the hate for her is over the top and undeserved but I don’t think she will be nominated for an Oscar this year. Just because the critics love something doesn’t mean that the voters will.

  8. Heat says:

Hey Kaiser! Just wanted to point out that Alicia won Best Supporting for Ex Machina in LA.

  9. Algernon says:

“she would have a fighting chance at some awards in the supporting category, but she has NO chance if she’s nominated for a lead actress. ”

If her nominations come for The Danish Girl, she should be considered a lead actress, because she *is* in that movie. Same goes for Rooney Mara in Carol. The category fraud is getting ridiculous.

  10. Tracy says:

It seems like placing a lead actress in the supporting category may not pan out for Mara or Alicia. I doubt the actresses have any say in the matter, kind of sad for the actresses. Kristen and Juliette got critical praise last year of Clouds of Sils Maria, but the studio pushed the movie back one year, I love that the critics remember Kristen’s performance and are rewarding her.
If Alicia has a lead role, she should not be placed in the supporting race. It is unfair to Kristen and the other actresses, who are actually supporting.

  11. Bridget says:

Brie Larson, Cate Blanchett, and Saoirse Ronan are the locks for noms, but don’t count out Vikander just because you personally find her annoying. Supposedly she’s the best part of the Danish Girl. It’ll be interesting to see how the nominations actually pan out, because it’s stiff competition in Best Actress this year, and that’s obviously affecting the Supporting Actress category anyhow.

    • Algernon says:

Yeah, there are still two spots open on the best actress list, and for once, there’s real competition for them. I hope Charlotte Rampling gets some attention for 45 Years. That movie broke my heart, and she’s so moving in it.

      • NUTBALLS says:

I haven’t seen 45 Years yet, but I hear nothing but raves about it. It would be nice to see Rampling get some recognition at the big awards.

      • Bridget says:

It’s also an interesting year because besides Blanchett, for the most part these women in the mix aren’t the traditional ‘Oscar’ crowd, so we’ll see how it shakes out.

  12. LAK says:

BIFA is a casual crowd. Not full on red carpet glamour.

That said, I hate LV as worn by Alicia. The collection makes no sense, and they chose the wrong spokesmodel for it. Not that they shouldn’t hire her, only that whatever this fugly collection, doesn’t match up to the model. In much the same way that JLAW is missmatched to DIOR yet Charlize Theron/Marion Cotillard match the label and the vibe/collections. perfectly.

    • ichsi says:

Agreed. Alicia is pretty in this next door hipster girlie kinda way (emphasis on girlie because she always looks 16) and this collection is doing her no favour at all.

  13. Maria T. says:

She looks like Nicole Ritchie to me.

  14. mädchen says:

Kristen won best supporting actor/actress award at Cannes last year according to critics. She was singled out for her performance at many film festival around the world. She was predicted to win Cesar by French critics. She’s more than fine as long as voting by critics goes. But SAG and GG have a different approach. You need to campaign for their awards.
I’m so happy for Kristen. It’s a great recognition, especially considering the early movie release date. Very well deserved, congratulations!

  15. Eggland's worst says:

If that headline is true, I have one thing to say: Lord, I’m ready, take me now.

  16. ican'tsnap says:

Actually, LAFCA named Alicia Best Supporting Actress for Ex Machina, not The Danish Girl!

I don’t see The Danish Girl winning any major awards. Some nominations, yes, but it’s not a very strong film.

  17. Lou says:

Kristen win NYFCC, Boston Online, BSFA, She was runner up at LAFCA and was #3 choice with the NY online critics . The Online Film Critics Society released their nominations today and she is nominated there also. She’s the clear favorite in that category with no campaigning and with a movie that most critics saw in May 2014. It will be a real shame if IFC do not push her but at the same time it’s great to see an actress succeed thus far without having to do the usual rounds of ‘i am worthy’ that actors have to do.

I’m just here to read the meltdowns from the usual haters/rob fans. They truly believed that she would have no career after Twilight and it would be Rob winning awards left and right…

    • Anname says:

So Lou…..any Rob fans here complaining? It’s amusing that you should make this comment since you are often one of the first “haters” to show up on Rob boards. Pot meet kettle.

I think it’s probably time to give up this indignation on her behalf. Just enjoy her work and stop going on about how unfairly she’s treated by the evil Rob fans. All celebrities have their haters and fans, Kristen is no different.

  18. Claire says:

I have nothing against her but for some reason, she bugs me. The same happens to me with Portman. For media sake, I hope she doesn’t win any big awards.

    • Sochan says:

Vikander and Portman come across vain and snooty, that’s what it is. You’re not the only one who sees it.

      • Farhi says:

One’s person snooty is the other’s refined. I think we need more of snooty.
I am tired of people having to pretend to be down to Earth (like Jlaw – I don’t wash my hands and pee in the sink) just to be liked.

      • Claire says:

JLaw is not my cup of tea either. I rather read about Emma Watson, Alison Brie or even Emma Stone.

      • Farhi says:

I like both Emma Watson and Emma Stone well enough. Both were called snobbish as well, though. They are not “girl next door” type. Emma Watson, especially.

I don’t know who Alison Brie is.

  19. Miss Grace Jones says:

This woman just seems so dull in all the pictures I’ve seen of her. Like she’s falling asleep or about to have one of those slow dramatic tears run down her face.

  20. Angie says:

The lead actress race is tight and super strong this year; supporting category not so much. A lot of people thought Lee Daniels’ The Butler was a lock, Oscar bait film and Oprah was in the award circuit but failed to get an Oscar nod.

I have a feeling The Danish Girl won’t get any acting nominations; perhaps for Costume Design, Makeup/Hair, and Production Design. In 2013, 12 Years a Slave overshadowed The Butler as I think Carol will overshadow The Danish Girl. I know one story is about a transgender woman and the other a lesbian affair but the Academy likes to stick to one social justice type film per year.

  21. pea says:

I can’t recall another actress who doesn’t wear make up on the red carpet. She looks good. She’s probably jetlagged because the other day I saw pics with Damon on the set of Bourne in Washington.I’ve not seen The Danish Girl but she was amazing in Ex Machina.

  22. Farhi says:

Kristen, Alicia and Scarlett are my favorite younger generation actresses.
If they could just find something to nominate Scarlett for I’d be all set.

And Lizzy Olsen, just to watch fireworks that would result from it.

  23. Tig says:

I just watched Alicia in Testament of Youth- she is a good actress, tho that is a not very good film. I’m curious to see The Danish Girl. But I would love it if Charlotte Rampling is nominated! She is an amazing actress, with such an incredible body of work.

    • Div says:

Alicia is a fab actress but definitely lead in The Danish Girl. It’s a disservice for her to put her in supporting because it splits votes and people tend to not want to award category fraud…I think the studio’s idea was that she could win supporting but only get a nom in leading but they should have just been satisfied with a nom.

I caught 45 Years at a festival and Charlotte was so incredible. I so want her to win.

  24. Eru says:

Well critics tried to do the same with Justin Timberlake during Social Network when they tried to push him into awards season. Did not help. Now they try to do same with Kristen Stewart . Sometimes it feels like we are watching different movies.

Critics never say straight: “Justin Timberlake, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Lindsay Lohan, Jennifer Aniston was so bad in that movie” . Even when audience screams it and laughs. But critics will always be like: “Yeah it was ok I suppose”.

Kristen Stewart probably hired good pr person, that promotes her in critics circle. Kinda like DiCaprio and Aniston like to hire. But still – so embarrassing. Kristen Stewart is literally the worst actress in the world. Even worse then Lohan. Lohan at leas could be descent early in her career in Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. Kristen Stewart was never good.

    • Div says:

RME. I get you don’t like Kristen, but she won the Cesar, the NYFCC, Boston, and was runner up in LAFCA and has received a couple of other noms while not campaigning at all for this particular film. She is not like Aniston last year who was at every single event and holding multiple screenings. She’s been filming in Europe for the last few months and not even in the states. Also, you cannot compare this to TImberlake who got good reviews but nowhere near the same amount of awards nominations or critical love. You can think she’s overrated but you are being irrational here with the comparisons to Timberlake.

      • Eru says:

Gees would you stop with that silly Cesar, Kristen fans? NO ONE CARES about those Cesar awards. Do you know any past winners in any category? No? Because no one cares about it. Stop throwing it in everyones throats like its some Oscar. Did she won anything at Slovakian movie awards or Argentinas movie awards? Let us know.

Did you know that Ben Affleck won Best Actor award at Venice film festival in 2006? Way before his directors success. No? Never heard it being mention? Because no one cares about European awards. Not about Cannes, not about Venice. And not about some Cesar.

They are all bad actors – and Timberlake, and Pattinson, and Lohan, and Stewart.

      • ell says:

lmao no one cares about european awards, here we go with american centrism. boring.

the cesars are very highly regarded in the business, get your facts straight.

    • Lou says:

‘Kristen Stewart probably hired good pr person, that promotes her in critics circle. Kinda like DiCaprio and Aniston like to hire.’

lmao you are joking right? Her publicist is on twitter and she didn’t even mention her NYFCC etc wins! Oh yeah man, Kristen’s soooo thirsty. The excuses people come up with to try and explain Kristen’s success gets more farcical

  25. Div says:

Alicia looks fantastic. I feel bad for her though because she’s definitely lead and the studio pushing her in supporting where she had a chance to win has made her miss out on some lead noms because people don’t want to such blatant award category fraud.

  26. Eru says:

There is something off in Alicia Vikander for me. She was fine in Ex Machina. But as a person? There is nothing interesting about her. She is not trying. I dont care what she says in interviews. I dont care to see her photos. She is boring. Thats why she will never be Movie Star.

She is one of those actors that will suddenly book 5 roles a year (mainly supporting) and are everywhere for 2 years. And then they just vanish. And no one remembers them in 6-8 years.

  27. Naddie says:

I must be really tired of dolled up, artificial “beauties”, because I’m starting to like her over casual style. Does she look like she just woke up and put a random dress on? Yes, but at least she looks natural.

  28. anon says:

Both of them are overrated. In fact their acting skill don’t even exists, they’re two wooden sticks and we’re talking Oscars? I mean, we all know the Oscars are bullshit but what is happening?
