Did Courteney Cox hire a private investigator to look into Johnny McDaid?

Courtney Cox and Johnny McDaid announced their split and their broken engagement a week ago. When I say they “announced it,” I mean that Courteney’s people let it officially leak to all of the weekly magazines. Since then, there’s been a rash of speculation about what really happened between them, whether Courteney tried to unsuccessfully “mother” him (he’s 13 years younger than Cox), or whether she’s “domineering” or whether he just left her with literally no explanation. Now In Touch Weekly has added a new wrinkle to the speculation:

Courteney Cox ended her 17-month engagement to Johnny McDaid — and trust issues were partly to blame, sources tell In Touch magazine.

“She didn’t want to let him go but had no choice because she started to suspect he was losing interest in her,” an insider tells In Touch. “Right before Jen Aniston’s wedding, she felt something wasn’t right. Johnny was acting distant and spending a lot of time in England.”

The source reveals to In Touch that Courteney even hired a private investigator and “ended things soon after.”

But then Courteney caved and took the Snow Patrol rocker back. “She was deeply in love and thought she could fix him,” says the insider. No luck, even with counseling: “They loved each other dearly, but had major trust issues,” says another source.

[From In Touch Weekly]

Before this story, most reporting indicated that the break up happened because Johnny up and left Courteney suddenly. One day he was there and they were engaged, and the next day he was packing his sh-t and moving back to London. I’m just saying, I don’t think it was “Courteney found out something bad about him and dumped him.” I think it was more like “Courteney was paranoid about a possible/probably side-piece and hired a private investigator and around the same time, McDaid just had enough and left.” Still… hiring a private investigator is intense. I didn’t know celebrities still did that. Well, I didn’t know non-Scientologist celebrities still did that. I bet a lot of celebrities investigate their partners or exes and we just don’t find out about it though.

PS… TMZ has a denial of this story – their sources (Cox’s publicist and probably Cox herself) say that the break was “clean” and that she didn’t hire a PI.

I would suggest that perhaps he had enough of her obscession with her appearance fear of aging. Its all she talks about!

  2. aims says:

If you have to hire a PI to find out who you’re going to marry. Then you’re in trouble.

    • antipodean says:

Too true, aims! Once PIs are involved, it’s pretty much over bar the shouting. Poor Courtenay seems absolutely desperate to cling onto all sorts of unattainables. Youth, unsuitable men, etc. She was a beautiful and accomplished woman, why can’t that be enough?

    • anne_000 says:

Even though Cox denies the story, overall, It just looks bad when any older woman hires a PI to follow around her young lover. It just looks desperate and acknowledges that she’s in a lower position than the guy, even though she has enough resources to walk away and can still catch another man,

  3. Zapp Brannigan says:

She has had so much work done it’s giving him the wonk eye in that bottom picture, like a contact high sort of thing.

    • LurkingWeirdo says:

Is wonk-eye a common side effect of plastic surgery? I had jaw surgery 20+ years ago that left me with some nerve damage and a wonky eye on the left side of my face. I wonder if people think it’s from plastic surgery? Oh well. (The upside is, the left side of my face has NO wrinkles!! The right side…well that’s another story.)

  4. tracking says:

TMZ said the biggest dispute was over where to live. I could see that being true, but she co-parents a kid in LA and probably didn’t have much flexibility there. They could have done school year in LA, winter break and summers in UK. But I could see the LA celebrity fishbowl being a tough pill to swallow for him.

  5. Deanne says:

I used to think that she was so naturally beautiful. She has completely ruined her face.

    • lucy2 says:

She was really gorgeous, and I think would have naturally aged beautifully as well. I feel bad that she’s struggled with it so much.

That’s too bad they broke up, but I guess better now than after the wedding with all the legal hassle of a divorce.

  6. funcakes says:

If she hired a PI it was a smart move. It’s not only herself she has to consider, she has her daughter as well.
The stories are all to common about people who marry and then find out your spouse has disreputable past.
I’m not casting aspersion on his character, but it good to be careful.

    • Dirty Martini says:

I completely agree. If she did hire one–good for her. She has a daughter and a hell of a lot to lose. Better be safe and check…..

He’s not very attractive, so it leaves her room to upgrade. He looks like a budget version of Bill from True Blood.

    • Peggy says:

It’s Hollywood, where is she going to upgrade, they’re coming off the turnip farm at 16 yrs, she will have to get another toy boy, none in that group can keep a man, too much plastic surgery, nagging, and up in each other’s business.
When Toby stops gambling, he may be the next to hit the road, and they can continue to hold their bitches get together.
