Jennifer Lawrence in white Dior at the NYC ‘Joy’ premiere: boring or lovely?

wenn23278371

Here are some photos from last night’s NYC premiere of Joy, the film that could possibly earn Jennifer Lawrence her fourth Oscar nomination at the age of 25. Last week, J-Law scored a Golden Globe nomination (for lead actress in a Comedy/Musical) but not a SAG nomination. But the nomination shortlists are so scattered this season, I have to think that J-Law is still a major contender for an Oscar nomination when it comes down to it. The Academy loves her, even if critics aren’t in love with this particular film or performance.

For the premiere, Jennifer wore this simple Dior Haute Couture gown. It looks like a dozen other dresses she’s worn before, and while I think she looks pretty, the whole look is sort of a snooze-fest. Even her styling seems kind of blah. Speaking of blah and Dior, Jennifer told E! News that she really wants to go twinsies with Amy Schumer at the Golden Globes – the BFFs are nominated in the same category (Schumer is nominated for Trainwreck) and J-Law said: “We’re going to try to figure out to wear the exact same thing. That’s my mission. I really want us to wear the same thing. She’s going to have to wear Dior. I’m just going to have to have Dior make two of whatever they’re making for me.” This will be Schumer’s first time at the Globes, correct? She may want to actually pick her own dress, I’m just sayin’.

Here are some additional photos from last night’s premiere. In addition to J-Law, I’m including pics of Bradley Cooper, Elisabeth Rohm (who plays Joy’s sister) and Virginia Madsen (who plays Joy’s mom). Virginia’s dress is SO unflattering. Elisabeth’s dress is amazing though. Also: J-Law’s FROSTED EYESHADOW. You can take the girl out of Kentucky, but you can’t take the Kentucky out of the girl.

Damn, I thought she was Icky Australia in that header pic.

    • Lea says:

      Icky Australia LOL

    • Mimi says:

Actually Kaiser, critics LOVED Jen’s performance, she got awesome reviews, the film…not so much!

    • QQ says:

Holy Shit the Scroll down surprise that was Virginia Madsen dress!! HO-LY-SHIIITTTTTT! It’s like your Narcissist mom coming to the club with you and Macking on the guys that buy you drinks! WOW

Bottom girl looks like they tacked formal lace to a club dress to make it go from day to Night in Project Runway

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, it’s pretty dull. I think it’s childish and sort of mean to want to wear the same dress as Amy, who wouldn’t look nearly as good in it. Dang, JLaw, I’m trying so hard to like you…

The other two dresses – 😁

  3. Linn says:

Jennifer’s dress reminds me of a nightgown especially the top part. Not a good look. And the other dresses are even worse.

  4. MisJes says:

I don’t know, I like the frosted eyeshadow, I think it looks great – I’m so sick of the smoky eye right now – so over-used! Is she still using Jill Dempsey? She did an amazing job on the Mockingjay tour!

    • Esmom says:

I actually love the eyeshadow. I have a friend who wears a slightly shimmery pink eyeshadow for day time and it looks amazing. This reminds me of a “dressier” version of that.

      • The Beldam says:

I’m really glad to see I’m not the only one loving her makeup, particularly her eye shadow. I agree also that the smoky eye has been overdone to bits. It’s really refreshing to see something different for a change. I think Kaiser trying to suggest that being from Kentucky denotes a lack of good taste? Such ignorance reeks of classism.

    • phlyfiremama says:

Me too! I LOVE frosted eye shadows!!!

  5. InvaderTak says:

Meh. Looks like Dior knocked off her Calvin Klein Oscars dress.

  6. Kylie says:

I’m underwhelmed by most of her Dior gowns. I think the Amy thing is probably a joke.

  7. Tanguerita says:

    Madsen’s dress is really unfortunate.

  8. jbap says:

The Amy thing is totally a joke. And I doubt she’s getting an Oscars this year – her performance is getting glowing reviews, but the film isn’t.

    • Josefina says:

That doesn’t exactly rule her out, though. Meryl Streep was nominated for August a few years ago – critics weren’t so fond of that movie. If I were to check wikipedia I’d find a lot more examples. If you’re an Academy darling and your performance got buzz, you got it.

      • Ctkat1 says:

And Julianne Moore was nominated and won last year for About Alice, which was a not good film with a really great performance in it. Happens fairly regularly in the actress categories, because usually it’s a scramble to even find five lead roles to nominate- this year is refreshing in that there are far too many deserving performances (especially when you factor in the category fraud of Alicia Vikander and Rooney Mara in supporting).

    • Alex says:

Actually critics love Jen but not the movie. Which is why the movie is not really on the short list for a nom while Jen is. Most reviews have put her as the strongest part of the film but the editing and pacing was a mess.

  9. Sochan says:

Elisabeth Rohm is such an outstanding beauty. (Not in this pic with the dress!) I remember her on Law and Order, and she is just exquisitely beautiful. So under-rated. And a fine actress, too. She was my favorite of the ADAs on there. Her and Carey Lowell.

  10. Minxx says:

Jennifer is not a good match for Dior. She’s too young and just not sophisticated enough to pull the Dior look. Imagine that dress on Charlize (minus the country singer makeup). The other dresses are just.. I mean, I don’t want to say anything unkind because I like Virginia Madsen, but this is not a good look. I don’t like the other dress either – lace is very hard to wear and the see-through look is just cheap, IMO.

  11. Lurker says:

Is it just me or does this movie look terrible?

    • zinjojo says:

Nope, Lurker, it’s not just you, the trailers all look terrible, and critics don’t love the movie either. It’s one I’m definitely not spending the time or money to watch.

      • Lurker says:

Okay good. I am not alone. I saw the trailer and went “WTF?”. It’s time DOR finds a new muse and actors for his repertory company. Move on, J.Law, B.Coop and R. De Niro.

    • FingerBinger says:

It’s not just you. It looks like it should be on lifetime.

    • CornyBlue says:

I saw a clip of the movie and everyone involved seemed they were in the rehearsel for a school play.

      • Val says:

To me it just looked confusing ! Like a bunch of stuff thrown together and I’m not sure what the point is.

  12. Lucy2 says:

I don’t care for any of these dresses. Jennifer’s makes her look rather shapeless around the middle, and we all know her figure is amazing. The black lace looks like a costume, and Virginia’s is incredibly unflattering.

  13. Josefina says:

The upper part washes out her spectacular silhouette completely. She looks bloated.

The twinsie dresses thing was a joke, right? I can’t really tell. Please tell me it’s a joke. I like Amy and JLaw individually but together they are a huge mountain of “ugh”.

  14. lower-casedeb says:

did she give Adele tips about hair? because i could swear Adele’s new haircut for the XFactor finals was v. similar to JLaw’s.

  15. eo says:

The dress and hair color wash Jennifer out. The jewelry and nail color don’t make any sense either. The hair cut and makeup are quite nice though. The flimsy dress doens’t do anything for her boobs and midsection either.
Poor Victoria is an example what happens if you have draping over nothing to drape. She looks like a brick. The fabric is kinda weird too, but the color is very nice on her and her makeup is perfect for her coloring. Shame about the dress.
Elisabeth just looks super strange in that dress. Like an angelic head with those light locks and piercing eyes screwed on a goth barbie body. Just doesn’t make any sense together,

  16. GlimmerBunny says:

I actually really like the dress. It looks very 90’s – in a good way. The frosted eyeshadow has got to go though.

  17. Cee says:

I hate most of the Dior dresses she wears. She needs to get behind Charlize Theron’s take or switch brands. I would love to see her in Louis Vuitton or old school McQueen.

  18. Mo2 says:

Lovely. But after a few hair changes, probably for different roles, it looks a bit over processed. I loved it when it was real short. She could carry that look as well as Audrey Hepburn.

  19. WILZ says:

    Beautiful woman !

  20. Cinderella says:

JL’s hair looks a lot like a style Gwyneth has already done.

  21. anon says:

She looks lovely. She’s is SO pretty it’s crazy! Personally, I’m glad the movie didn’t go well. It would be too much for her to win another Oscar. Too soon for that.

  22. Moxie Remon says:

I came to see if there were any pics of Édgar Ramírez and I’m sad.

  23. FingerBinger says:

I like the dress. Dior has had more misses than hits. They don’t know how to dress their stars.

  24. Asparagus says:

The top of the dress looks like a cheap slip you’d wear to the beach. The bottom is more formal. She looks really bad.

  25. amilu says:

The dress does nothing for JLaw’s boobs.

Elizabeth Rohm’s dress really, really is NOT amazing. Are you having a laugh? The collar is particularly troubling.

  26. Debutante says:

Elisabeth Rohm ‘s dress looks amazing ?? Really??
    No. Just no.
And my God, Virginia Madsen.. WTF ??

  27. Alex says:

While other actress are trying so hard, or pretending not to, JLaw makes it look so easy when the topic is “how to be a movie star”. She just IS. She is nice, has charisma; is likeble. And I pay a ticket to see her movies. The girl has gotten! Go JLaw!

  28. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I think Jennifer’s dress & styling, right down to the white eyeshadow, is very 70’s disco-ish. Dang, the other two dresses on Virginia & Elizabeth are hideous.
