‘Fargo’ finale recap: no, the flying saucers were never explained but that’s okay

SPOILERS for Fargo’s Season 2 & last night’s finale

I haven’t written much about my Fargo love because it feels so precious to me. The show is easily one of the best-written shows on television, arguably THE best written show. I binge-watched the first season after it aired, but I’ve been watching Season 2 as it aired, and I honestly have to say… there’s no True Detective-esque sophomore slump. At all. Season 2 is completely on par with the quality of Season 1.

After the bloodbath of last week’s penultimate episode, I was expecting more death and destruction in the wake of Sioux Falls massacre fallout. Every major Gerhardt was dead, and the only “criminals” left standing were Hanzee, the Gerhardts’ adopted Native-American “son” and Mike Milligan and his man. I thought we were about to see one or both of those characters involved in some kind of reckoning. There was no reckoning. Mike Milligan goes to Kansas City corporate and finds out that the crime syndicate really is run like a corporation. For his murderous cowboy shenanigans, Mike Milligan was rewarded… with a small office and some advice to bone up on golf and spreadsheets.

As for Hanzee, easily the most interesting character of the season, he ended up not hunting down Kirsten Dunst’s Peggy. He did shoot Ed – the brilliant Jesse Plemons – but Ed still got to have his moment with Peggy in the walk-in freezer, where he summed up his life philosophy and told her that they never would have worked out, long-term, as a couple. We were led to believe that Hanzee had stalked the couple into the supermarket, but in reality, Patrick Wilson’s Lou Solverson had scared him off. In the end, Hanzee will get a new face and a new identity, courtesy of some unknown criminal-type. Hanzee will live to fight another day. Perhaps he’ll even thrive somewhere else. Incidentally, Zahn McClarnon – the Native American actor playing Hanzee so brilliantly – has a wonderful interview with Vulture here.

In the end, Peggy was hallucinating and she was in profound shock, although even on her worst day, she was still able to get the drop on dozens of cops and professional criminals. Lou brought her in and Peggy’s only wish at this point is to go to federal prison in California so she can “see a pelican.” The way Kiki delivered all of her lines in the back of the cop car… it was perfection. Her whole performance has been amazing. I hope she wins some major awards, because she is very deserving.

As for Lou and his cancer-stricken wife Betsy and the recovering Ted Danson… everything is fine for now. We know Betsy will die within the year and we know Lou will leave the force eventually and raise his daughter Molly by himself. We know this because of Season 1, and we know this because of Betsy’s dream, in which she saw the way her family would move past her death. Props once again to Noah Hawley for connecting the two seasons and bringing back Allison Tolman, Keith Carradine and Colin Hanks for dream-sequence cameos. Props to Noah Hawley for creating a completely amazing Coen-centric world for these magnificent characters. Props to Hawley for everything.

And Fargo is getting a Season 3, and Fox/FX is basically greenlighting whatever Hawley wants to do. Hawley promises that Season 3 will be a modern crime tale, that it will take place in 2015/16, I guess.

My boyfriend was out of town last night so we’re saving the last Fargo to watch together tonight. We just finished binge watching Season 1 the other day. I love this show so much. It has exceeded my expectations. I like this season a little better (or maybe just differently) than the first, but man, I cannot wait to see what the writers come up with for Season 3…!

I love it..when Hanzee turned on the Gerhardt family it was pure genius. The vomit stained memorial and the bartender who spit in his glass of water seemed to be his turning point. disappointed Jean Smart didn’t go out guns blazing with Kansas City thugs it was a shocker to see Hanzee turn on her but is made sense on a number of levels. His relationship with the Gerhardt family is a great illustration of the relationship between First Nations people and the US and Canadian governments. Our history is just a vomit stain on the collective memory. Loved the show it deserves “*Neepawa” awards – (Ojibway for plenty or many)

@rosalee, I hadn’t thought about it that way, but you’re right, thanks for your insight!
I wanted Floyd to go out in a more dramatic way, but it made sense with Hanzee killing her. I so wish more of these actors had been nominated!
@Nev, Wilson is SO YUMMY, I agree!!!

Season 2 was even better than 1. The acting was superb across the board. The finale was a teeny bit of a letdown, but probably completely appropriate nonetheless. I can see any number of these actors winning an award, and certainly as an ensemble they are unparalleled.

  3. Nev says:

    Wilson is so yum.

I’ve seen the first couple episodes of this season and I can’t wait to watch the rest. I also read that Vulture article and I came away thinking damn, Zahn is incredibly sexy (and how sad is it that he’d really just like to play a father or a romantic role). I was kind of blown away that he hasn’t had the opportunity to do something so basic, or as he put it, “just a human being relating to another human being.” As a POC that almost made me cry.

    • antipodean says:

I agree, Zahn has the sweetest face, and those eyes! He could play any part he wants to I am sure. He is also excellent in Longmire, if you ever see that, it is on Hulu at the moment. I was entranced last week when they played “Sylvia’s Mother” by Doctor Hook over part of the action. I don’t know who chose the music but it was perfection to highlight the action on the screen. It actually brought tears to my eyes. Huzzah for Season 3, I hope it’s more of the same.

      • Eggland's worst says:

Longmire is also on Netflix because Netflix took it over since enough of us “fogeys” convinced them to. There is supposed to be a season 5 and at the end of season 4, let’s just say, it looks like there will be more Mathias. YEAH!!! Sorry if you knew this already, I just don’t want to spoil it for others.

    • Beatrice says:

I thought Zahn was the best one on Fargo and that’s saying something given the stellar cast of that show. What an actor–with little dialogue, he played Hanzee with a coolness and menace that was just stunning. His interviews are great, too. I never guessed in the beginning that Hanzee would become a major character, but when he turned on the Gerhardts, I was rooting for him to survive all the way. Kudos to Zahn, a great cast, and great writers. Loved season 2! Did anyone else think that Hanzee might be old man Gerhardt’s son???

    what the ffffffff….

I have not seen this yet. thanks for spoiling it with the title :/ (I know it’s not anybodys fault at celebitchy that I watch things the day after they’re on TV, but come on, at least put ‘spoilers’ in the title and talk about specifics in the body of the article. TiVo and downloading is so popular now, I cna’t be the only one who watches a day late…or maybe I am? :/ )

    • Tiffany :) says:

Yes, my thoughts too! My bf and I are going to do a marathon over holiday break. Kind of questionable to put a spoiler in a title!

    • isabelle says:

That title really doesn’t spoil anything. The UFO has been the mysterious thing through all of the episodes, since first episode.

      • Polkasox says:

Also confused why the title would be a “spoiler”. It didn’t spoil anything. The UFO was in one of the first episodes & isn’t a major plot point. & FYI, if you’re worried about spoilers, you should probably avoid comment sections too.

  6. taxi says:

I liked this season better than the first one. Dunst was amazing. They all were.

Zahn was so good too in Longmire. Wouldn’t he need to cut his hair to encourage a crossover to non-Native American roles? He’ll be typecast if he doesn’t actively pursue alternate paths, beginning with changing his trademark “look.”

    • isabelle says:

It was a better season after a really good S1. Noah Hawley and the Coen’s are just knocking it out of the ball park. When any writer can put a UFO in a series and make it seem like it belongs, that says a lot about how good the writing is that they can write in anything and not make it absurd.

  7. Insomniac says:

Yay! Fargo talk. I think I got choked up a little when we got the glimpse of the Season 1 Solversons. And I really liked the finale, even as it went in a few directions I didn’t expect. I don’t know if I liked it better than the first season, but I probably liked it just as much. No sophomore slump here.

And did you guys see this? http://m.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/how-the-fargo-finale-revealed-a-hidden-secret-from-season-1 (Spoilery for both seasons.) Dunno if I buy it all, but it’s fun to think about.

  8. Eggland's worst says:

I wonder if season 3 will have one of Molly’s kids as a sheriff or other law enforcement officer. Be kind of a sequel, rather than a prequel.

  9. isabelle says:

A perfect season and the true mob king emerging was the best part of the last episode. Liked every minute of this whole season and Kirsten was stellar in last night episode. She so deserves and Emmy. Both seasons are good, can’t wait to see what they do with S#. Wondering if Betsy’s dream is the future S3? The writers have said it would be set after S1, so more current time.
