Jennifer Lopez: ‘It’s gonna be a real J.Lo year, whether you like it or not’

FEB.12.10_final.indd

Prepare for a lot of Lopez in 2016. Jennifer Lopez is one busy lady. Not only is she reprising her judge duties on the 15th (and final) season of American Idol, she also is starring in the cop drama Shades of Blue on NBC and taking over for Britney Spears with her own residency at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. Oh, and she’s also taking care of her 8-year-old twins, Max and Emme. She kind of makes me feel lazy.

Jennifer covers the February issue of InStyle magazine, which hits newsstands January 8, rocking a rust-colored sweater by Acne Studios with a white skirt by Calvin Klein Collection. She tells the magazine that she does her best to make sure her kids know that Mama is there, taking a photo of herself by their beds after they fall asleep, “so they know I was there.” The kids don’t reciprocate when Jennifer is snoozing, however. “I am busy, and they know it. And they know part of their job is helping me get sleep. If I’m sleeping in, they’re very quiet, like, ‘Mommy needs to sleep! She worked late last night!’ We’re a team.”

The captain of “Team Lopez” is starring in the new cop drama Shades of Blue, debuting on January 7 (the day after Idol’s season premiere on FOX). On the show, which co-stars Ray Liotta and Drea de Matteo, Jennifer plays Bronx detective Harlee Santos, who gets caught up in an anti-corruption probe and has to take down her boss to clear her name. Jennifer said of her character, “She’s human. Most people think they’re the good guy. We’re trying to do the best we can, but we all do bad things sometimes, whether it’s lying or cheating ourselves or other people.”

Jennifer, who will be performing 20 concerts as part of her All I Have Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, is also on the cover of TV Guide, talking about her career and her busy schedule. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On misconceptions about her personality: “I think once I started doing American Idol, people really got to know my real personality. I think maybe before there were a lot of misconceptions about me being a real diva or a problem or being very demanding and things like that. And then once I did that show they could see my true personality, which was kind of just an emotional, happy person who was actually nice. I think there was a misconception that I actually wasn’t [nice]. I don’t know why they do that to women in this business, but they tend to. A lot of us are really just like any one of your friends. I’m a real girls’ girl and I love hanging out with my besties and things like that. As unusual as my life is, I’m very normal and kind of down to earth.”

On life before stardom: “I was sleeping on a cot at a dance studio before I hit it big. My life was about pounding the pavement, breaking away from under my mom and dad’s wings and going off and flying on my own. I needed that moment.”

On being a woman in Hollywood:
“I am happy to be one of the people who are breaking the mold. We can’t keep acting like we are in the ’50s. Women are strong. Women are bold. And now it is reflected in our art.”

On 2016: “It’s gonna be a big year for me. I have [American] Idol, I have Shades [of Blue], I have my [Las] Vegas residency beginning. I have so much stuff that we’re working on on the branding side. I don’t know how I’d name it. It’s gonna be a J.Lo year though. It’s gonna be a real J.Lo year, whether you like it or not!”

[From TV Guide via E! Online]

Jennifer Lopez says that it’s “going to be a J.Lo year.” Back in 2008 she never wanted to be called J.Lo again, but now she wants us to know that it’s J.Lo’s year. Kellen Lutz says that 2016 is also Kellen Lutz’s year.

Mommie Dearest 2.0. I hope those kids eat all their steak at dinner and don’t use wire hangers!

    • The other paige says:

      @maxine 7
Love the MD reference thought the same thing!
      Also
Jesus Christ girl- just enjoy your life and relax a bit. You made it ok?
You’re almost 50…spend time with the kids while they’re actually awake and smell the flowers…

    • The other paige says:

      @lying liars
Why does Maxine sound like an idiot?
Did you not see ” mommie dearest”? -the sleeping scene?
      I think you sound ignorant.
Maybe next time if you keep quiet no one will notice.

    • Anne tommy says:

I think Maxine sounds witty. Lopez on the other hand sounds like an egomaniac.

    • Maxine7 says:

I love you all! You get me! And I may be an idiot Lying Liars but one thing I DO know is rose bushes + Being in PJs after midnight in your Backyard + really big pruners + an angry woman with a lot of cold cream on her face is a situation to be avoided at all costs! 😉

  2. sills says:

I know part of it is just good genes, but whatever her health/beauty regimen is, it works. Damn she looks good.

  3. Jayna says:

I’ve always admired Jennifer’s hustle and hope the TV show does well as Ray Liotta deserves a big hit. He’s so talented. I like her shorter, darker hair on the promos. But I am over her squinty-eyed/mouth-slightly-parted face she loves to give on the red carpet and somewhat, but not as bad, on covers like here.

    • Esmom says:

Ha, I was thinking the same thing, that it was a toned down version of her usual “thinks she’s fierce and sexy” face. Still, she seems harmless. Good for her on all the projects.

  4. India says:

The girl looks fabulous. And that is her real butt. No implants like the Kardashian trash.

  5. Locke Lamora says:

I never got how JLo got that famous, she’s not a good actress, she’s not a good singer and I don’t find her very beautiful either. She’s like Selena Gomez of yesterday.
And her dynamic with her kids sounds a bit weird.

    • Mimz says:

She hustles. And she’s a decent-to-good actress IMO, She’s a decent singer who works to improve her voice (which many people with BIG voices don’t really do – see xtina screeching painfully and ruining her voice), and she’s a great performer and an entertainer. The world is not made only for people with the most obvious, greatest talents such as the Mariahs and Whitneys. Other people can bring good stuff to the table, and Jennifer does it very well.
I really don’t like this notion that only GREAT actors and GREAt singers should be famous and successful. Many of those who were born with great talents become lazy to improving themselves and bringing other stuff to the table, and come with that attitude of “you’re here to see me perform so just hush and don’t complain”.
Some people might not be equally talented, but step up their game and do a really good job. JLo is one of them.
I’d totally watch her perform and I will give Shades of Blue a look.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Well, fine, but why are people not saying the same about Amber Heard when she hustles? Apart from Selena, JLo has been God awful in everything she’s ever been in, so I don’t even find her a decent actress.
In an ideal world, those who are the best would be the most popular, but expecting that is just delusional. But I would at least expect mediocrity from someone who’s a superstar.

      • Mimz says:

Because Amber is sitting on big ol Johnny D trying to open doors to her. And Amber is a mediocre-to-decent actress with very limited range. I don’t think you’re familiar with how much JLo has accomplished or even watched all her movies. She’s good. She’s a good singer and she’s a great dancer. Not mediocre. You can’t be mediocre and achieve what she did, at 45 years old. She’s not Kim Kardashian, she hustled her way to the top, worked her ass off and still does. And Hard work SHOULD pay off, and if anything, she’s a poster child for that!

      • Josefina says:

This very much. I’ll be even harsher – I think she’s actually a bad actress and a very mediocre singer. But she does pop and romcoms, so it’s not like it actually matters.

JLo’s talent is she’s spectacular at marketing herself. You know what? The Selena Gomez comparison is more or less accurate. Much like JLo, I don’t think Selena will ever be the it-girl of the moment, but I see her working steadily in 10 years without any major breakdowns.

This is an incredibly sexist industry. The fact JLo remains relevant while in her mid-40s definitely means she’s doing something right. Girl got hustle and knows this industry very well. You go, JLo.

      • QQ says:

Locke and Josefina, Ya’ll are my people!, I don’t see it for her , all I think of her is that she is a Very VERY Pretty Hustler with the business acumen to surround herself by the right (business) people, but frankly WOEFULLY overrated as an actor, as a singer Utterly laughable as a dancer Middling at best, ambitious AF though!

Hose Illusion Sheer Dresses for everyone This Year!

      • V4Real says:

I like JLow a lot. But when a 40 something woman thinks she has to get out there and twerk in order to keep pace with the Miley Cyrus’ of the world I have to side-eye her.

      • Grant says:

JLo is also a really talented dancer and performer. I think you have to give her credit for that. She could be Taylor Swift, who can’t sing, dance, OR act (yet somehow she’s one of the biggest pop stars in the world…?)

      • perplexed says:

“Much like JLo, I don’t think Selena will ever be the it-girl of the moment, ”

I actually think J-Lo was a huge it-girl during her acting career and had the potential to get better roles, but the pop career with the stupid music videos (like the one where Affleck was rubbing her backside) might have turned her into a bit of a joke from an acting standpoint. She did have a number one box office hit and number one song (and even album?) at the same time at some point. Selena Gomez seems like a smaller star compared to what J-Lo was at one point. I think J-Lo continues to work because she’s not necessarily foolish enough to think anything is beneath her (like Sharon Stone and her stint on Law and Order).

    • Artemis says:

She can act, she’s entertaining and believable otherwise her films wouldn’t have been box office hits and critically acclaimed. She opened films on her name mainly which is something so called ‘it girls’ of now can’t even do without a action franchise or a strong supporting cast. Plus she has longevity, there is something about her that people want to see.
But I like her earlier stuff better, maybe because she was at the peak of her fame without the famewhoring and then it all went down during Gigli. It was just too much cringe and fontrum.

She got famous because she worked hard and she hustled her ass off. And thank god for that because how many latinas achieved what JLo has? She demanded (and got) high paychecks which is a great example for other young latina girls. Even JLo and her parents knew that entering showbusiness was nearly impossible with her background and ethnicity. We always get the same people but how many times have we seen black and latina women excel in Hollywood? Nevermind Asian and Native American women. It takes guts to demand a spot that is not even reserved for them!

I know it’s a ‘thing’ to question Jlo’s skills but she has more than the average hollywood star: she can sing OK, she can dance really great (her skills have only improved with age doing different styles and her footwork is amazing, way better than Beyoncé’s or Madonna for example), she is a great performer who brings different things to the plate and switches it up regularly which is tough and time-consuming and she can also act. She’s an all-round performer with charisma.

To compare her to Selena who can’t sing, dance or act and had to latch on to a male popstar to maintain relevance (in comparison JLo’s star power and influence upgraded all the men in her life, including Moviestar Affleck) is showing how little you appreciate her legacy. Selena would NEVER have a n°1 film AND album simultaneously and the only thing that is keeping her famous at the moment is her on/off thing with Bieber and being Swift’s friend.

As for her beauty, it’s subjective. I find her gorgeous with great genes and obviously great discipline to work out the way she does.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I guess I was too young when JLo was at her peak to truly appreciate her starpower or legacy. I’m just saying that I don’t find her good as an actress nor a singer. I’ve never actually seen her dance, she might be spectacular in that.

As for her struggles as a Latina, you are right, I didn’t even take that into consideration, which is my mistake. I’m not American and I’ve just recently found out she is not white, or that Latinos in general are not considered white because racial definitions are different in America than they would be in my country.

      • Artemis says:

She is famous for being a latina (coming from a poor background) breaking through in most areas in showbusiness and thus breaking barriers. People really don’t know how amazing that is and it irks me that people question her skills when year after year we get bland white actors and singers propped up as the next big thing usually with stereotypical looks and mediocre but acceptable skills. JLo could’ve been famous for a few years and it would still be more than most latina women could ever achieve in that racist industry.

When even Jlaw has to tone down her personality to please people in this day and age, can you imagine the struggle Jlo had as an ethic minority in business meetings almost 2 decades ago? Before it was fashionable for women to stand up for feminism and pay equality etc? She probably didn’t have anybody rooting for her and I don’t care if she’s nice or not, she hustled and demanded big money. And she got it and delivered with n°1 hits and movies. Very very rare. I appreciate that immensely.

On top of that, she wasn’t scared to be many things, she was a dancer, then actress, then became a singer/performer, then combined it all, then businesswoman…Like so many famous people say they want to do produce, direct, sing blabla, she just did it like it was no big deal! No big talk, just actions and she was young when she did all of that. If that isn’t a feminist example, I don’t know what is. She even turned down a big dancing gig (Janet’s world tour) because she wanted to do something else, I mean, so many stars take the reliable path, she didn’t.

Well, I was 10 and her body type alone was something I never saw before, especially because big bums were not that trendy back then but she owned her body shape like a boss in an industry that likes super thin and waif like body shapes.

      • klein says:

Yeah, agree – my only problem with her really is that she didn’t concentrate on acting exclusively after ‘Out of Sight’ because I really thought she was superb in that and I’d have liked to have seen her in a lot more roles than she’s done over the years but she’s worked hard at other things and it’s her choice to make after all.

      • Mimz says:

Thanks @Artemis you said exactly what is so amazing about Jennifer Lopez. She’s a hard working, overachiever and opened so many doors!
        I’m a fan.

      • claire says:

I’m surprised by all of the talk of her being a bad actress. I always thought she was pretty decent and thought she would eventually focus on that full-time and not pursue the singing as much. She was really good in that movie with George Clooney and I hate to say it, but Maid in Manhattan was a cute frivolous romcom that’s still my guilty pleasure to watch on Netflix.

      • Daria Morgendorffer says:

        @Artemis, your post is great.

“She got famous because she worked hard and she hustled her ass off. And thank god for that because how many latinas achieved what JLo has? She demanded (and got) high paychecks which is a great example for other young latina girls.”

So true!!! It kills me how the Kardashians get all the credit for being the people who “changed the game” when it comes to what beauty standards are. JLo was the first non-white, non-African American woman to come onto the scene with a butt and curves. She changed beauty standards. She was the first Puerto Rican actress since Rita Moreno to strike it big and be vocally proud of her background and where she came from.

I completely agree with you and @Mimz

      • Marty says:

@Artemis- Absolutely agree. She’s not my favorite actress, but what she accomplished is amazing. How many Latina actresses did we see in Rom-Coms before her. How many Latina actresses have gotten the opportunity to play the kind of roles she has? It’s pretty remarkable actually.

      • supposedtobeworking says:

She got famous because she wore a green dress to an awards show on the arm of P Diddy.

She has dated the right men to keep her name in the conversation. She’s not that different than Amber Heard, but she’s more in your face. Both are beautiful, both were attached to men with big careers in the same area they are.
        J. Lo has been smart enough and just talented enough to act/sing/dance/entertain, but I agree that she is mediocre. Her relationships and self-promotion is what has kept her famous more than her talent.

      • Artemis says:

        @Mimz

She sure is! And to think that she wasn’t academically gifted! An inspiration for those that think that intelligence begins and stops with a highschool diploma or uni degree.

        @Daria

Yes! She is a big part of pop culture; especially late ’90s (the green dress! the pink sweatsuit, the headband) and early ’00s (the true inspiration for mixing couples name into one: Bennifer). Not to mention the marriages…And unlike some Latinas (AHUM Jessica Alba), she was/is proud of her background.

        @marty

Yes, agree. I don’t think everybody should like her or be a fan but to dismiss her accomplishment is just ignorant if you know about her achievements and the work she had to do to get there. To be the lead in films and sustain many other careers on top of that is pretty amazing for any star, let alone an ethnic minority!

        @supposedtobeworking

Nope, she already had films under her belt by then. The moment was significant because it was ballsy and she was already well-known by then. It just earned her a spot in best pop culture moments 🙂

She has a pattern of dating a ‘nobody’ and then a very famous person. She was married before Diddy to Noa so he did nothing for her career. After Diddy and before Affleck she married Judd. During those times she continued her career without the financial aid of these husbands nor did they do anything for her image or had connections to give her more work opportunities. Her marriages are more often than not mocked so she got through it mostly unscathed. Ben Affleck was very famous yes but when she dated him, she upgraded him. Not the other way around. JLo even said he liked it that she dressed him up etc.
As for Diddy, he got into legal trouble at the time which disrupted their relationship. Nevertheless, people act like he started her music career yet he only produced ONE song of her debut album. Other people were much more involved and influential than Diddy. Jlo also broke up with him because of his cheating and they remained friends so no she did not use him. He was only a small part in her music career.

      • supposedtobeworking says:

@Artemis I didn’t mean that it started her career, but it is what made her famous. She had acclaim as a flygirl and Selena was significant in some circles, but you can’t deny the dress moment and her relationships have pushed her fame more mainstream than if she hadn’t had them.

I think she is a great entertainer and has a great sense for staying relevant. I’m just not a fan. I think what bugs me about her is that she tries to walk both sides of being just a regular girl, but wearing furs and jewels and living a very rich life. It’s disingenuous, but I recognize that she isn’t alone in that.

      • Original T.C. says:

        +1000000000 Artemis

People forget how much J.Lo has accomplished in her life. She started out as a dancer (In Living Color), then hit it big when she stared in “Selina” about a famous Latina singer. Watch that movie or “out of Sight” with George Clooney if you question her acting skills. She is one of the few women in Hollywood who was famous by herself and made herself up from the bottom up with no special treatment. She lost more dating Affleck than she gained but you never hear her whine like him.

IMO she is an excellent dancer, a great entertainer, a good actress and a decent singer (weak vocals but not any worse than some currently celebrated singers). She has three times the amount of talent Swifty has in her little finger but is given 30% of the credit. I hope she keeps going.

    • SusanneToo says:

I’ve seen her in only three movies – Blood and Roses, Out of Sight, and An Unfinished Life – all dramatic roles, and she was excellent in all of them. I have no interest in the singing, dancing JLO, but the girl can act when she plays it straight, plus she seems very likable and I hope her new show succeeds.

    • Greenieweenie says:

She got a lot of accolades for her (I think) first film, Out of Sight. That established her as an actress, much like it did for Kate Hudson. It
was only after that she started to do rom coms and music and fashion–all that came with The Puffy Era. And then she started to be known for her men.

But she was just a dancer-turned-actress at first.

    • Greenieweenie says:

She got a lot of accolades for her (I think) first film, Out of Sight (can’t remember if that predated Selena). That established her as an actress, much like it did for Kate Hudson. It was only after that she started to do rom coms and music and fashion–all that came with The Puffy Era. And then she started to be known for her men.

But she was just a dancer-turned-actress at first.

      • Original T.C. says:

In the mainstream, her movie Selina made her fame. Her fashions, men or music came second. It’s cool to hate her but let’s not try to re-write history. Her talent has kept her where she is not P.Diddy or Affleck.

      • Diane says:

Check out Enough. She plays an abused wife who turns the tables. Very entertaining.

    • Pri says:

If Britney/Shakira/Gwen can be successful with their screechy barely-there voices, I think JLo definitely can as well.

    • Emma - The JP Lover says:

Sometimes you guys make me feel so old because it seems like I am one of a small group of posters here who are old enough to remember such things … like Jennifer Lopez starting out as a dancer. I first saw Jennifer Lopez on the Waylan Brothers hit TV variety show “In Living Color” (she was one of the “In Living Color” dancers … her moniker was “Fly Girl”). Then I saw her in Janet Jackson’s 1993 music video “That’s the Way Love Goes.” Then I saw her in the 1995 Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson film “Money Train.” And then she started singing in the late 1990’s (I didn’t even know that she ‘could’ sing). It’s like she got the Paula Abdul edit.

Paula was an excellent dancer, she was one of the Laker Girls (she choreographed all their routines while she was there), and a ‘go to’ choreographer for films and music videos (in my opinion, some of her best choreography work was in the Arnold Schwarzenegger film “The Running Man” with the dancers who opened the show in the film). Then one day someone said, “Hey, why don’t we make Paula a singer? Her music videos will be off the charts!” Thus we got the incredible 1988 (voiced over) “Forever Your Girl” album She stopped dancing after injuring her back. Go to YouTube and watch the music video from the album “Straight Up” to see how good a dancer Paula was. But I digress …

Somebody said, “Hey, why don’t we make Jennifer Lopez a singer? Her music videos will be off the charts!” And the rest is history. It helped that Jennifer really ‘could’ carry a tune. 🙂

      • Pandy says:

Yes I remember her fly girl days although at the time the fly girls were just filler between skits to me. I think her biggest break came when she displayed the girls and her navel while she was still Diddys plus one.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@Pandy, who wrote: “Yes I remember her fly girl days although at the time the fly girls were just filler between skits to me.”

Yes, but they were extremely popular and they had a huge following.

    • Paige says:

I feel the same way about her.

  6. nicole says:

Kevin Lutz or Kellen Lutz lol…

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m so grateful that my parents were actually there, and didn’t have to take pictures of themselves standing beside me while I was sleeping so I would believe them. That made me so sad, and to be honest, I don’t think it’s enough.

    • Tate says:

Yeah, that came across as a little sad. The part about the kids keeping quiet while mommy sleeps was a little weird too.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. It’s all about her. Like they’re perfectly happy being neglected because they are her “team” and they’re working together for the benefit of her career. I’m not sure eight year olds see it that way.

      • Krista says:

I disagree. My parents were in health care and did shift work and were older when they had me and my siblings. (J.Lo was in her late 30s I think when her twins were born?) Letting mom and dad sleep was really important in my household growing up. I don’t really think that’s weird at all. Lots of families probably operate this way.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        @Krista
Maybe this is a minor point, but to me, the difference is that she has a choice. Your parents were doing their best to make enough money to support and educate you and your siblings. She could choose to slow down a little if she wanted.

    • vauvert says:

I thought that was super weird and yes, sad. But the truth is, a mother can’t be there for dinners and school plays and practice if mom also has to be on stage and with a film crew. Choices. I would make different ones that don’t involve me living a parallel life to my child, but I also understand that having hustled her way through two decades, she is not ready to give it up.
Personally I am not a fan of anything she has done / been in, I remember her coming on the scene as Didddy’s half naked girlfriend in the Versace dress, and mostly I am tired of the “I am so sexy, I smoulder” trope. I adore Liotta but I wouldn’t watch yet another cop show unless it involved Han Solo getting a badge, and Tommy Lee Jones being his partner.

    • swack says:

Bothers me also. How about turning something down once in a while. You have all the money you will ever need but your children are only children once. Don’t leave it all to the nannies!

    • lucy2 says:

That was a really sad image, wasn’t it?
Though I’m not a fan of her as an actress or singer, I admire the hustle and hard work she has put into building her career and companies, but…there has to be some balance too. I hope she does take some time off to be with her kids, and time for herself, friends, relaxing, etc.

  8. Barrett says:

I noticed for shades of blue to be a real gritty cop she let the wrinkle in the center of her face show.
I seriously noticed that then you see her on idol and her forehead doesn’t move. But of course she never botoxs (eye roll) she just is genetically gifted and hydrates!

    • SusanneToo says:

About a year ago DM ran an article on JLO with pictures of her leaving her NYC apartment. She was dressed down and make-up free. She looked completely non-plastic and tox-free. She looked a bit tired and close to her age, but still way above average pretty. Her on-camera look could just be artfully applied make-up.

  9. Mimz says:

I like her and I think she’s trying. Like every parent out there. It strikes me as a little odd, taking a picture, but hey, many kids around the world with hard-working parents don’t even have the chance to see a picture to know their parents are there. So I kind of get it.
She seems like a loving mom.
And gotta give it to her, she really works hard. Not sure how i feel about the Shades of Blue thing, I don’t know if she’s a strong enough main character for TV, but hey, at least its not some show about a singer or dancer, drama nonsense.
Let’s see how this pans out.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think the difference (about the picture) is that she has a choice. She doesn’t have to fill every waking hour with work. She could still be successful, even if she cut out half or a third of what she does. She chose to have children. Sacrifices and responsibilities come with that.

Great point. You could say that about a lot of celebs or wealthy people, yet they continue to work when they seem to have more than enough money to retire or at least back off a bit. I wonder if it’s a compulsion of sorts? And/or a fear that if you stop or slow down, you won’t be able to pick it up again as easily?

      • swack says:

@Esmom – I would agree that it could be a compulsion and/or fear, but they have more than enough money (if invested wisely) to live on the rest of their lives (that’s all celebs, not just J-Lo.).

      • Mimz says:

Yes GNAT I agree, but you know these people know their success might be temporary, has a shelf life, and I think it gets in their heads. To maximize their time on the limelight. Also, For people like her to make it this far, they have to be workaholics, it can’t be just working for a living, you know…
They probably only find fulfillment by working a lot.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m sure she feels a great need to work, for whatever reason – wealth, personal fulfillment, staying on top, all good reasons. I’m certainly not suggesting that she not work. Just maybe slow down a little, because they will be beyond her reach in a few years. However, they may have a great relationship and the story about the picture may seem sadder than it is. We don’t really know. Maybe that just happened once. I just know that my father worked all the time when I was a child, and I have very few memories of him participating in my childhood. I knew he loved me, and I was fine, but we can never get those years back, and he simply wasn’t there. I would have rather had fewer material things and more Father time.

  10. Nev says:

    Yes JLO!!!!

In her earlier peak she had a number one movie, album, and branding all at the same time so to call her an icon is an understatement. She works her ass off. She is fabulous.

    • Artemis says:

I live for oldschool JenPez but I still love her for her lifelong ambition to be freaking amazing and setting an example for young women all over the world.

  11. Erinn says:

I don’t really like JLo – but I LOVE her hair curly like that. She looks BEAUTIFUL.

I’m actually kind of curious to see this show – I saw an ad for it with my husband and we’re both just like “wait… is that JLo? This looks decent?” The more I think of it, the more I’m kind of thinking this could be a good move for her.

Look – I don’t think she’s some fantastic singer, or fantastic actress – but there’s something very marketable about her. People like her. I remember my mom AND my dad both liked her when she was really breaking out big – and they rarely agree on a whole lot of things. She always hit a lot of demographics, which is good marketing in my book – and I’m a sucker for cop shows.

  12. Nev says:

In ten years the story will be she was too controlling and the kids will want to run to Marc Anthony because she’s has too much rules etc……rolling eyes.

  13. Angelica says:

There have been rumours FOR YEARS that JLo is difficult to accommodate for on set and backstage, so I’m not changing my view that she’s a diva. Nonetheless, she’s super fine and she won’t freaking go away, so I can admire her drive. Sometimes a dash of everything keeps a celebrity relevant.

    • Renee28 says:

She is very difficult. On Shades of Blue she made the crew call her Ms. Lopez. No Jen or Jennifer allowed. And whenever she was in her dressing room everyone had to stop working and clear the area. I admire her drive but her ego far outweighs her talent.

      • Mean Hannah says:

I’m a bit of a J. Lo aplogist, but I don’t see what’s so difficult about wanting to be called Ms. Lopez or having her dressing room cleared when she’s in HER dressing room.

      • FF says:

It also might be her process for keeping in character. Isn’t she playing a police officer?

She’s usually gregarious so she may have needed that to keep her distanced and serious. Seems like the role might call for it.

  14. Lucy says:

I would be needing some of her work ethic to rub off on me, to be quite honest. Anyways, she sounds excited. Hopefully it’ll be a good year for her indeed!

  15. TheOtherViv says:

Whether we like it or not? Pheew, thanks for the intel.
She is pretty, but my vote is – no, I don’t like it.
A Celebitchy year 2016 however? I can live with that.

  16. Mean Hannah says:

I have a soft spot for J. Lo and I always will. I worked in the Bronx for a few years in my 20s and she was everything to so many of the teenagers I worked with then. I’ve said this here before, that my sister was in the film business (studios) – now she’s in the TV business – but she said that J. Lo is one of the most hard-working, professional actors she’s ever dealt with. Not only is she uber-professional, so is her team, a combination that is apparently very rare.

I also, like Mimz and Artemis said above, admire her hustle, her hard work, and all the barriers she busted through. I never thought much about all the hatred that was thrown at her, until she started with Ben Affleck. I’ve ended friendships with many women over that – their vitriol that was really just thinly veiled racism. How dare a Latina think she’s good enough for their movie star crush Ben Affleck! She should stay in her block!

Well, go get it, Jenny from the Block!

    • me says:

I respect her work ethic too. She had no industry connections, no friends in the business. She did it the old fashioned way. Good for her. She also seems like a really nice person. Selena is and always will be my favorite movie.

    • islandwalker says:

I respect her work ethic and her hustle but I still think she is an awful actor and terrible singer. (She has beautiful skin.)

  17. teehee says:

Call me skeptical but she will have to compete with the ever younger crowds who stick their tongues out, lip synch, and pose for Terry Richards and get fake everything on their body… so…. Im not knocking her or her age but in todays market? I dont see her getting the attention she could otherwise deserve– as a legitimate talent, that is.

  18. Nancy says:

Bow down to Jennifer. She looks better now than she did twenty years ago. How many divas can claim that with truth.

    • me says:

I agree, she is looking better and better with age…and she doesn’t look frozen like most of them.

  19. Sarah01 says:

Not – she can’t act, sing or pose properly. She’s just a step up from the kardashians. I feel bad for these celebrity kids trying to deal with gigantic egos since birth.
When I’d have the occasional lie in, my kids used to come and snuggle in with me, I’d wake up because they’d ask those cute and weird questions but that time was so precious to me.

  20. Ann says:

I love her UNIRONICALLY! She’s a decent actress within her narrow range: no one does tough urban chick like J-Lo but I’ve never been able to get into her music. And, yes, she DOES look fantastic.

  21. mp says:

hmm a post on J Lo with no mention of Casper? Corey, I need some gossip from you! is this going to be the year that JLO gets her love life in order? I cannot believe she is still going around with that creeper.

    • Sochan says:

He’s mentioned deeper in the article and they are still together. She claims she has had a Eureka moment in which she learned to love herself without a man – but she hasn’t BEEN without a man since she was 16 years old. She pretended to be single for a few months last summer but it was revealed she was still seeing Caspar on the down low. Then they came out as officially back together. I still believe the foundation of their relationship is his ability and willingness to cater to her, to romance her, and to make his whole world revolve around her 24 hours a day. It’s the secret to why she can’t make a relationship work with a busy, successful man who had other things going on – he can’t devote the inordinate amount of time that her massive ego and insecurities demand. Madonna is like that too, and many male celebs who date “beneath” themselves. Don’t be fooled by the bridge Jen is selling: she’s not “down to earth” and “regular”. She’s high, high, high maintenance.

  22. Sochan says:

I find JLo dreadfully boring and always have (I remember her from her beginnings). But she looks amazing for her age. She’s even lovely without makeup – looks even younger without it. If I had her money I would look 15 years younger too. It’s not just genes. She can afford the best nutrition, preventative health care, exercise programs, and the best beauty products/treatments literally in the world. Please, don’t think she just looks like this because of genes.

  23. livan says:

I have a fondness for J.lo I have to admit. I love out of sight but I also love maid in Manhattan, I have seen it 10 times or more…guilty please! Her music though, no just no.

  24. tealily says:

Acne Studios? What an unfortunate name.

  25. Joh says:

She plays in to every woman’s insecurities with her plastic surgeries and try hard outfits.
She will age as well as Madonna!

  26. Dorky says:

I think she’s an excellent, highly underrated actress. And my GOD, what a bod.

  27. Naddie says:

I guess I’m the only one who’d rather see her acting than singing. I’ve watched several movies with her and she’s not bad! I dare to say she’s much better than Scarlet Johansson, who’s a totally one note actress.
And if she wants 2016 to be her year, I can only hope she comes up with a better idea than a stupid song and video about her backside.

  28. FF says:

She’s not a chillax type though, she likes to work. The most inactivity she had was when she was married to Marc Anthony. I worry about her kids moving around so mmuch sometimes though because most actors say their childhood was peripatetic but I kind of admire her work ethic. She seems to love her kids.

I’m not sure about her TV series (having any longevity, I just hope it’s good and not given a hard time just because she’s in it) but I wish her and it the best. I swear the last interview I read from her said she’d take less on this year. So I guess that’s out.

She’s probably okay with J.Lo now because it has become part of her branding. Like it or not.
