Did Karl Lagerfeld tell Kristen Stewart that she’s too fat to model for Chanel?

After winning several major critics’ awards, Kristen Stewart was snubbed for an Oscar nomination for Clouds of Sils Maria. While I doubt she’s crying herself to sleep about the “snub,” I do think she might have wanted it. Somebody, somewhere should have realized months ago that if they put a little bit of time, money and effort into it, Kristen could have easily gotten a nomination. But no one really got it until she started winning all of the critics’ awards, and by then it was sort of too late to ramp up an Oscar campaign. That’s my take on it. But Kristen did try – she spent a few weeks hosting screenings, doing press, going on TV shows, and generally being game for anything. All for nothing!

Oh, well… hopefully she’ll be asked to be an Oscar presenter this year. That would be fun. Of course, if she does get asked to present, that means weeks of dieting and dress drama, right? Even presenters have dress drama and diet drama. Speaking of, Star Magazine says that Karl Lagerfeld has basically told Kristen that she needs to go on a diet. Why do I believe every word of this?

Kristen Stewart is slim by anyone’s standards… unless you’re a French fashion house! Sources say a certain high-end designer has warned the actress to get into shape pronto or risk losing her very lucrative contract as its spokesperson.

“Kristen feels like she shouldn’t have to work out, since she’d rather smoke cigarettes than eat anyway,” explains a source close to the star. “But she’s not 19 anymore and if she wants to be the face of a luxury brand, she needs to keep up with the Hollywood standard, which is toned, healthy body.”

Kristen is the first to describe herself as “skinny fat” but her too-cool-for-school attitude is wearing thin.

“It’s her professional responsibility to stay in shape, so her team is looking for a trainer and a nutritionist,” adds the insider. “Awards season is here, and she can’t be seen going to parties looking bad.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

What’s strange is that I actually think Kristen looks better now than she’s ever looked. Her hair is a great length, she seems more comfortable in her own skin, she doesn’t seem like she so twitchy and anxious all the time. Has she gained a miniscule amount of weight in the past year or so? Maybe? But it’s literally a single-digit weight gain, if that. And just the idea that Karl Lagerfeld is telling someone that they’re too fat for Chanel? Lord help us, because every single person in the world is TOO FAT FOR CHANEL. If Lagerfeld had his way, he would just use broomsticks as Chanel models. Broomsticks and Choupette. How would Lagerfeld feel if we told him that Choupette was too fat to model?

is she about to make out with Karl in the last pic?

Lagerfeld is a horrible man but i dont think he said that, she is not too different from very skinny models.

    • Bettyrose says:

In all fairness, the article says he wants her more toned. It says nothing about her needing to slim down.

      • Jellybean says:

That is how I read it too. I can imaging that as a model she would need to be toned and eat well to make sure her skin is as good as possible. Body image is a big issue, but if you are going to take money to show off clothes I guess you need to make an effort.

    • CTgirl says:

I doubt Prince Karl told her to lose weight but I do think that her team told to get toned. Ms. Stewart has a strangely untoned physique whereas most people has some muscle tone/definition just from daily life. Her untoned upper body can photography as doughy.

      • Div says:

She in no way looks doughy. I could see him telling her to get toned…. even though she’s slim as hell and while she may not have “muscle” tone she doesn’t look untoned. However, Karl also has Vanessa and some socialite whose name I always forget with him too and neither lady has defined muscle tone. So I can’t see him suddenly changing his mind on a particular body aesthetic.

      • CTgirl says:

@Div, I have to respectfully disagree. Her arms can look quite doughy when photographed. I never seen her in person so I can only go on what is presented in print and film.

    • qwerty says:

She looks nothing like very skinny models, cmon now.

    • Valois says:

I don’t think Chanel models are toned. More like really skinny.

      • Farhi says:

Models looks like they are starving. They are not toned either. They can’t have any tone or muscle because it was all consumed by their starving bodies.

      • stella alpina says:

        Preach, Farhi.

It’s BS when models say they work out to get toned. It’s not about being toned or healthy. For them, it’s about fitting into the sample sizes dictated by fashion designers. If they can’t fit into the clothes, they don’t get hired. The designers call the shots. And many of today’s designers don’t have the technical skill to tailor clothes on a woman with curves.

It’s a myth that most models are naturally that skinny. A small percentage do have fast metabolisms and don’t easily gain weight. But many more have to starve to look that way. I’ve read too many accounts of successful models who admit (only after they’ve retired) that they starved and/or overexercised and/or smoked to stay thin. They know that if they don’t conform to fashion’s twisted demands, their careers will quickly end.

During the supermodel heyday of the 90s, high fashion models were regularly a U.S. size 4 or 6. Nowadays, a 4 is the upper limit, with many models wearing a size 2 or 0.

A lanky teen model who later develops a womanly figure will be dropped. The industry pigeonholes a woman naturally endowed with T&A as “vulgar”. Karl is just one of the power players who promote this kind of thinking. There really is an undercurrent of misogyny in that world.

I’m not saying a skinny model is a bad thing. The problem is that’s the ONLY figure you see in high fashion. They push that as the only ideal instead of showing more variety. On the flip side, there are “plus-size” models. However, they are limited in what they can do because they are rarely used in haute couture or prestige campaigns.

  2. Mia4s says:

Tabloid stories usually have a tiny particle if truth. Did Karl Lagerfeld tell her that? Sure it wouldn’t surprise me in the least, he’s crazy. The rest seems unlikely.

  3. LOT says:

Sadly, most designers hate women. This guy is no different.

  4. NN says:

If anything it looks like she’s lost weight!
    her face looks much slimmer

    • RocketMerry says:

That’s what I was thinking too! Her cheeks look slightly more hollow; she looks like someone who was very slim to begin with that decided to lose those pesky few extra pounds. If anything it’s a very “french model”-esque look.

    • layla says:

Her face is slimmer because she is no longer 19. We all loose our “cheeks of youth” around our mid 20’s and all our faces slim as we get older.

  5. Insomniac says:

WTF? I’m not much of a Kristen fan, but she isn’t even remotely overweight. Not even “fashion” overweight. I suppose she could lose some excess weight by dumping Lagerfeld — I hate the stuff they put her in for Chanel.

    • Savina says:

      With you on that 100%

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

Everyone is fat to Karl except Karl himself & obviously Choupette. I can’t forget when Katy Perry was talking to him & he said he was glad she was losing weight. Nope! not okay.

    • idsmith says:

I agree on Kristen and the clothes. I think that Chanel looks pretty basic. The bags are nothing that get me excited and a lot of the clothes look trashy instead of high end.

    • Tiny Martian says:

I hate how Chanel dresses her as well. Most of the time they put her in clothes that look like they’re designed for middle aged conservative women, the two outfits pictured here are actually the exception. And I’m not a fan of these two, either!

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Not sure if this happened, and she is certainly very small, but she is reaching the age where you have to start working at it and nature doesn’t do it for you. I used to weigh 108-110 at 5’6″ and I would eat a pizza after school, then have dinner. My body was fit and toned. Then, it wasn’t. About her age. So she probably does need to quit smoking, eat properly and work out, or she’ll gain weight.

    • Crumpet says:

Unfortunately, quitting smoking will almost certainly result in gained weight, unless she is very very disciplined. Which I don’t see her as.

    • Kitten says:

Yeah she obviously doesn’t need to lose weight in the sense that aesthetically, she looks fine. But she should do it for health reasons.

I personally liked her hair shorter-I think that haircut really suited her.

      • Jay says:

She should lose weight for health reasons? I’m hoping you mis-typed there…

      • Kitten says:

That was terribly-worded on my part.

I meant she should stop smoking and eat better for health reasons. As I said, aesthetically she looks great-she doesn’t need to lose a pound.

  7. Patricia says:

That top photo is everything. Karl is such a hater.

  8. InvaderTak says:

No way. I don’t really like Kristen, but I hope she doesn’t cave in (if this is true).

  9. grabbyhands says:

She looks better now than ever??? All the snaps I saw recently (they’re from the same set that the first one is from) make her look gaunt and tired.

He seems like the kind of twat that would say something like that.

  10. cat says:

If anything, Kristen looks extremely thin. Last year she filmed five or six movies, including a short with Lagerfeld. He actually seems to be giving her more work. She represented an entire line of clothes. Then her gave her a contract to represent their classic handbag. Then a watch and sunglass contract. She opened a fashion show and made a short film with her. He seems to be trying to keep her with the fashion line.

  11. NN says:

She, like most women over the age of 21, look better with more weight on her.
Her face right now looks too thin which ages her and makes her look mousy in the face.
She kind of looks like Avril Lawhateverhernameis now.

  12. taxi says:

This is hard to believe. She’s very slim & looks good. If any actress is being threatened by Lagerfeld for being “too fat,” I doubt it’s Kristen. If he this, I this she’ll get other offers as her recent work has good.

  13. ell says:

ah, horsecrap. she’s very petite, even by hollywood standards.

also she was amazing in clouds of sils maria, would have loved if she got a oscar nomination.

  14. Chinoiserie says:

Maybe she gained a couple of pounds during holidays (like me) and will loose the weight soon since if she gained weight it has to be recent since she looked the same the last time I saw pictures of her. Or there is no truth to this.

  15. Becki says:

Meh, I don’t agree that she’s too “large” to model, but in every pic I’ve seen of her, she’s skinny fat, which means she has more fat to muscle ratio on her body. She definitely needs to begin to take care of herself or it will just ramp up as she ages and her metabolism slows down. She definitely doesn’t need to lose weight at all, that’s not what I’m saying, but perhaps lose some of the extra fat on her body which if you have, you can’t be a model.

    • Crumpet says:

She is tiny, but very soft. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much as a hint of a muscle peaking through anywhere on her. Certainly she needs more muscle mass for her health, and probably less fat. She has the bone structure to be able to tolerate the loss in her face I think.

      • taxi says:

But this isn’t new for her. She had no muscle tone or definition even back in her Twilight days.

  16. madi says:

Star magazine, the most reliable of all sources. LOL so hard especially considering the timing. She’s shooting another campaign for Chanel right now in Paris.

    • Lou says:

ikr? And she has said that Chanel have been nothing but supportive and lovely to her. She said for her birthday they gave her a signed Patti Smith album instead of a Chanel item to promote their brand.

  17. trishy says:

    “she’s not 19 anymore . . .” F*ck that mindset.

  18. Winterberry says:

I would love to see someone tell him Choupette is too fat.

  19. PumpkinSpice says:

I wish I was thin. Or just more healthy. I am having a hard time loosing the baby weight. I have a 7 month old. And it is very hard. I don’t loose weight as fast as I used to.

I don’t think he called her fat, but that’s her should tone up. She doesn’t look very toned. But the cogs (and I would know bc I am a smoker) reeks havoc on your hair, skin and nails. So she really should be paying attention to taking care of herself. I am trying to cut back on the cogs. I never should have started up again after the pregnancy. Lol. But I still see Kristen Stewart as the dirty non showering nasty attitude person who she was when she was younger. Not very likable in my opinion.

  20. manta says:

She’s not toned enough? According to the guy who picked Lily Allen as one of his égéries and gushed about her for years, the guy who keeps Vanessa Paradis as an ambassador for the brand? Sorry , but if these two were/are toned enough Stewart will do.

  21. Josefina says:

I can believe this. Not because Kristen really is fat (she obviously isn’t), but because Lagerfeld is a major mysogynist with an incredibly twisted sense of what women look like.

  22. HoustonGrl says:

Chanel is so overhyped and their clothing.is.ridiculous. Like, literally derelict. I am not surprised she’s their spokesperson or muse or whatever. I find nothing interesting or unique about her look at all. And no, she’s OBVIOUSLY not fat.

  23. kri says:

That raisin in lifts has ruined the house of Chanel. Only Choupette keeps me from completely despising him. Kristen is not fat. Another day, another chance to make women unhappy with their bodies. Perhaps he should focus on his designs and not thigh circumference.

  24. Lou says:

This is absolute BS. Kristen is in Cannes right now filming her new Chanel campaign. Ive never seen her look skinnier than she was last year due to working on 4 movies, promoting 3 others, and doing her various sideline projects like Chanel. She really was becoming way too gaunt and tired looking. Since she had a break over Christmas she looks way better. She said her weight fluctuates a bit depending on her schedule – she loses weight fast if she is working/stressed and gains it easily too – though obviously we are not taking huge amounts, but she is a tiny girl so she probably will have to watch her weight once she reaches 30+, because she likes to eat and cook.

That’s what happened to me. I could eat whatever i wanted and still maintained a good figure. But now i definitely have to be a lot more careful and exercise too. I just weighed myself for the first time in about a year today and i am not happy. … I’ve decided to lose about 12lbs . I’m not fat by any means but the weight is slowly creeping up and i don’t want it reaching a point where i am depressed about what i see in the mirror and feel like it’s insurmountable. So yeah…. it’s time to get disciplined.

I’m actually very impressed with Karl’s choice of Kristen to represent Chanel. There are a lot more typical ‘pearl and twin set’ actresses he could have chosen, but he wanted to have somebody different and obviously he likes his choice [she has done several campaigns for jewelry, handbags, glasses, clothes and sales have not been effected (much to the fashionista’s dismay).

    • Div says:

I was going to say if anything Karl does not favor the athletic look or even a particularly toned look. His ladies include Vanessa Paradis, Keira Knightley, and more and none of them have defined muscle tone even though they are slim. He tends to favor a very soft slim look or a straight up gaunt look imo. While I feel like Karl has some horrible ideas on weight, I can’t see him wording to anyone “you need to get toned.” Plus, I feel like I’ve read a quote where he said something obnoxious on not wanting his models to have too much muscle at one point which reinforces my thinking that this tabloid story is BS. I do feel sorry for Karl though—he has a weird, twisted relationship with food and people’s bodies and he’s yo-yo’d from being way too heavy to being incredibly thin.

Also, as you said she’s already shooting a new campaign. I kind of wish she wasn’t still with the house since his new collection is very blah. I thought he had some of his mojo back with his last collection but nope.

  25. LMB says:

I can’t stand designers who apparently design clothes for adolescent boys

  26. perplexed says:

In the top pic she looks thinner in the face.

I don’t like her acting and I don’t think she would have gotten an Oscar nomination anyway, but I don’t know how anyone can criticize her figure. People have different tastes; however, her overall figure fits a conventional attractive standard when she’s clothed. Fashion is a weird world.

    • Bettyrose says:

She’s also very short, though, isn’t she? So I’d think up close in person she must be tiny.

  27. iseepinkelefants says:

By French standards I’m fat and I’m a 36 (French sizing)/2 or 4 in American sizing, like a 10 UK. 5’6, 120lbs. To an American eye she’s skinny but if you lived in Paris you’d get used to seeing girls smaller than her and you’d probably agree with him. I don’t, she looks normal but people in this country are tinier. Omg even men have smaller thighs than me. Do you know what it’s like to date a guy and be too fat to fit into his pants??? It’s depressing 😔 I feel like a heffer. Oddly enough, despite how small they are and tiny their thighs are French girls still have booty. I guess it an American myth that you need a bit of fat for curves.
