Tom Cruise may be heading to the danger zone for Top Gun sequel: excited?

Premiere of 'Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation'

In news that will either excite or infuriate 80s kids everywhere, it seems that the long-discussed sequel to the 1986 hit flick Top Gun may finally become a reality. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer got the internet buzzing about the return of Maverick to the big screen when he posted a picture with Tom Cruise to his Twitter with the caption, “Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.”

The producer has had a sequel on his radar for quite some time, and told HuffPost Live back in 2014 that, “We’ve been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we’re getting closer and closer. Don [Simpson] and I tried to develop something, we didn’t succeed. [Tom] Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn’t succeed. Now we’re back at it.”

As for the proposed plot, the story line is definitely not stuck in the 80s. According to Jerry, “The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay.” But don’t expect a release date too soon, as Jerry will have to overcome some challenges to get our favorite Navy fighter pilots back on screen, noting, “It’s just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he’s very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture.” Tom is currently busy, filming Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in New Orleans. The sequel will also need someone new at its helm, as Tony Scott, who directed the original film, passed away in 2012.

I wonder if the whole gang will be back for the sequel…haven’t seen much of Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer and Meg Ryan lately (Goose, RIP). I loved the original and would love to catch up with all of the characters. I do hope they get some new hunks to revisit the infamous beach volleyball scene. Tom Cruise looks amazing. Is it Xenu, good genes or a great doc?

Nah. I can’t watch anything featuring this psychopath anymore.

  2. Tate says:

I won’t watch anything with this creep in it. So that is a big fat no for me.

    • Wentworth Miller says:

Never saw top gun. I’ll pass on the sequel.
He looks super creepy in the picture where he’s wearing the North Face coat.

  3. Snazzy says:

Of course it’s xenu… what else could it be?

  4. Tiffany says:

    No. No. No. No. No.

Tony Scott has passed and this will truly be a slap in the face to his legacy.

    Just. Stop.

    • LAK says:

Tony and Jerry are practically the same brain. They worked on many films together.

The true brains of this operation was Don Simpson, Jerry’s producing partner.

As long as Jerry is on board, we might approximate the original.

  5. LAK says:

This is the only TC film I watch. And it’s more hilarious with every viewing. Iceman 4evah!!! Goose!!! And tiny Tom trying to stand as tall as possible next to everyone.

Normally, I wouldn’t go there because I despise his films, BUT Michael Bay would be the best director in order to approximate the original cheese, testesterone.

Tom Cruise may be heading to the danger zone for Top Gun sequel: excited?

    No.

  7. anniefannie says:

On a superficial note ive nevr been a fan of TC’s body something about his square hips and short waist. On the other hand 80’s Val Kilmer …yummy!

  8. FingerBinger says:

Nobody needs a top gun sequel 30 years later. However I could talked into a moonstruck 2.

    • Astrid says:

      Yup!

    • crtb says:

I am so tired of sequels. How many Fast and Furious movies do we need? How many Pirates of the Caribbean? How many Batman/ Spiderman, Transformers, MNY or Superman movies/ How many Star Wars or Jurassic Park? Hoe many Friday, Next Friday, Last Friday, Friday after Next? How many Mission Impossibles ? How many reunions shows? Not every movie has to be re-made, re-done, made over, have a sequel or prequel. Are there any script writers who can write an original story?

  9. Jaded says:

After having just read “Going Clear” I will never watch anything this disgusting, delusional cultwhore is in ever again.

  10. minx says:

    No.
    Not excited.

  11. prissa says:

Meh. They waited too long. And Val Kilmer is sick with some kind of growth on his throat, so I doubt he’ll be reprising his role.

  12. Bess says:

No way am I watching another Tom Cruise movie.

  13. TarheelPixie says:

Nope, not excited at all. Yawn.

  14. NewWester says:

Tom Cruise has become one of those actors I can’t watch because of the stories of their personal life has overshadowed their acting roles. All I can see when I look at Tom is him jumping on Oprah’s couch. He does not disappear into a role . You just see Tom

  15. SusanneToo says:

    Those cheeks!! Aaagh!

  16. Eggland's worst says:

I’m a suckered for all things Navy, especially redheaded sailors (I love me some ginger seamen, pun intended), so I’m game. The movie will probably stink, but it is a sequel to Top Gun, not mensa member screening.

  17. MysticBadger says:

He is annoying, and crazy, but Top Gun is awesome. What they would be able to do with modern tech… This could be super cool.

  18. Green Is Good says:

Will Tommy’s cult leader, sorry bestest friend David Miss Cavidge get a part, too? And will Ses Org slaves be forced to build the sets?

  19. aang says:

NOOOOOO! The first movie was the bane of my existence for the 6 months that it was the only movie my younger brothers owned on VHS. I was put off Tom Cruise forever. The crazy eyes and manic toothy smile has creeped me out from the beginning.

  20. Jana says:

I used to be the biggest Tom Cruise fan…thought he was robbed of an Oscar for both A Few Good Men and Born on the 4th of July. But after watching Going Clear and reading Leah Remini’s book (which is great) I can barely even look at him now, let alone sit through an entire movie.

  21. Granger says:

I doubt very much that Kelly McGillis would have a role in this. Kelly has allowed herself to age very naturally. She’s a beautiful 58-year-old woman — meaning that, by Hollywood standards, she looks old. By regular-society standards, she looks awesome. But Jerry and Tom will no doubt want to find a 25-year-old to play Tom’s love interest in the film, and they’ll create some back-story about Kelly’s character dying or leaving him or something. Maybe I’m being cynical, but I just don’t think Tom wants to stand next to, or film himself kissing, an older woman.

  22. trickgirl says:

I would suffer through watching this movie if they actually used Kelly Mc Gillis for his love interest again.( They will probably kill her off) BUT that’s never going to happen so I am safe……. Whew

  23. skippy says:

Val Kilmer will be returning for Top Gun 2.

  24. Deedee says:

If they’re going to do this, they need to do it with a young, hot pilot in the lead.

  25. OrangeCrush says:

My older brother (class of ’88, baby) was so excited by this news that he almost passed out. The rumors have been going on *forever* about this sequel.

I just… I can’t see this being a good idea. Part of what made the original so awesome is that everyone was so delicious (even Goose, who normally would not have been my cup of junior-high tea). I will be extremely annoyed if they bring in a love interest for Maverick who is in her late teens/early 20s, but I can’t see them being willing to cast Charlie for her original role, even modified. And Iceman? Err… I’m not sure he could fit into a cockpit these days.

And of course Tom Cruise has had work done – good work to where he still looks like himself, but work nonetheless.

  26. What's inside says:

I feel the need for speed….. bring it.

  27. Emily C. says:

I kind of hated the first movie, and now I know way more about Tom Cruise and Scientology and — gross, no, I’m not interested in anything he’s in. Also, we really, really, REALLY don’t need yet another testosterone-worshiping U.S. military-glorifying movie.

  28. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Nope. I think the first one was kinda silly.

  29. outhousecat says:

    He looks like Peter Brady.

  30. Axis2ClusterB says:

Unless they can find Meg Ryan’s original face – nope.
