Is Alicia Vikander now a shoo-in for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar?

A lot of people thought Alicia Vikander’s Louis Vuitton gown was the best look of the SAGs. I’m still ambivalent on it, days later. I thought it was far from the worst but not really the best either. Anyway, Vikander is still getting a lot of attention, and with her SAG win in the bag, it’s looking good for her chances at the Oscars. She’s up against Kate Winslet, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rachel McAdams and Rooney Mara. Winslet and JJL could have given Vikander some major competition, but JJL doesn’t seem interested in campaigning, and Winslet already has an Oscar. The only surprise I could see? If Rachel McAdams comes out of nowhere and wins, mostly because of affection for her work and for the film (Spotlight) in general. I could see that happening, although it’s a slim possibility at this point. Gold Derby currently has Vikander’s Oscar chances at 78-80%, with her closest competition being Rooney Mara.

A few days ago, Alicia sat down with the Los Angeles Times to chat about her whirlwind year. Some highlights:

The first time she came to LA: “When I came here to L.A. for the first time, it was for a screen test. I called my mom, I was like, ‘I’m at Universal, but not at the fun park. I got to go in on the other side, where the studio is.'”

How she spent Christmas: “I was home at Christmas; we live in this small town outside Gothenburg, which is a fishing town, and we got to go into Gothenburg — a bigger town — and my dad got to try on a tuxedo for the first time in his life. At 65. He was so handsome. They’re going to come out to Vegas [where she is filming a ‘Bourne’ sequel with Matt Damon] and my dad’s a big ‘Bourne’ fan. To be able to do that for my family makes me know just how lucky I am.”

She’s not burned out after all of her films released in 2015: “You [get immersed in] a film and of course you think that that is it. And then you go away and you read a new script and you have a new crush. And then suddenly that’s the most interesting thing — it feels like a new love. And I have dear memories of all of them.”

[From The LAT]

So she spent Christmas in Sweden… and then New Year’s with Michael Fassbender? That’s what she claimed a few weeks ago. I think Alicia is also saying that she’s going to bring her parents as her awards-show dates? Just as well.

Alicia has been filming the new Bourne movie for a few months, and they recently wrapped the Las Vegas leg of filming just before the SAGs. Alicia told Entertainment Tonight at the SAGs: “We did wrap in Vegas last night, so I’ve been back and forth for a month, which has been a very special experience — I’ve been in a hotel for about a month. It was actually an early finish [in Vegas]. We closed off the entire strip, blew up some s**t and stuff.” She also said she has been “fanning out every time I see Matt coming in with his cap on, walking through big crowds. I’m like, ‘Ooh, it’s Jason Bourne!'”

She’s beautiful, articulate, talented, and proud of her work. Good for her!

  2. Leah says:

I like her. But i think Saoirse Ronan should be getting all the awards. In my humble opinion Ronan is the most talented of the younger actresses. Her work is stunningly mature especially when you consider she is still only 21.

    • MexicanMonkey says:

They both could get all the awards since they’re not actually in direct competition with each other. I think Alicia is up for best supporting actress while Ronan is up for best Lead actress.

But I agree about Ronan, she seems very mature for her age and Brooklyn was resting completely on her shoulders and she carried it off spectacularly well.

    • Leah says:

I have seen a lot of both actresses work and while i think Vikander is talented i think Ronan is an extraordinary talent. Personally i feel like Vikander is getting a little bit of an easy ride to the awards here. I don’t think her work is at that level where it should be crowned best performance of the year, YET. I like her though.

      • Alex says:

I agree. The supporting race was woefully overrated to me this year. I like Alicia’s performances but it wasn’t great. Why Rooney did come out on top over her is shocking to me. I’m not against her winning but I guess I didn’t find it oscar worthy. I guess it just irks me that avg performances will get you an Oscar if you’re white but you have to be phenomenal to even get a nom as a POC. Not her fault but a thought I’ve had this year

  3. Neelyo says:

The supporting categories are usually where the surprises occur so despite her odds I’m going to say she’s not going to win. I don’t know who will though. The only one I’m rooting for is McAdams because I adore her, but the role isn’t Oscar-baity enough.

    • Betti says:

I can see Mara Rooney walking away with the gong – she’s been nominated for Best Actress before and didn’t win. Vikander is still an unknown and is likely to go on and get further nominations.

And I agree its the supporting gongs where the upsets happen.

    JJL FTW!!

    • loladoesthehula says:

Yaaaaaaas! It would be refreshing to see the academy reward an older actress instead of the hot young ingénue. I say that as one of the few who actually like Alicia.

  5. Abbott says:

I like Alicia but am going to go out on a limb and say she and Rooney will split the vote and Winslet slides in.

    • minx says:

I agree with this, and it’s too bad because KW was perfectly fine in her role but nothing great. But Winslet seems to be popular with the Academy.

  6. CornyBlue says:

I really really hope she does! I saw some interviews of her and she is so damn funny! I was pushed to stanning for her due to the vitriol around her from Oscar comments but now I am glad i did.

    • Abbott says:

I definitely hated on her for those comments but have grown to really like her. She’s very sweet in her interviews. The more people hate her, the more I love her.

  7. Jackie says:

The fact that she’s even in the Best Supporting category is a fraud. She should have been nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role. It takes away from the actresses that actually did have supporting roles ie. McAdams, JJL, Kate Winslet and a spot for those that weren’t nominated but should’ve been, Helen Mirren, Tessa Thompson. The Academy shouldn’t have accepted her (the studio’s) campaign/consideration for supporting and they should’ve switched it to leading. In saying that, I think she’s going to win, though I don’t agree with it. Rooting for McAdams.

    • WinonaRyder says:

I haven’t seen most of the films yet but I agree that Vikander (and Mara) are not supporting performances and should have gone lead.

    • Fatou says:

I would have loved Tessa Thompson to get a nod. Agree that it is category fraud with Vikander and Mara, however I think that Winslet will get the Oscar. Of the noms, I’d like Jennifer Jason Leigh to get it, though.

      • WinonaRyder says:

It would be great if Jennifer won. She’s been overlooked for so many years. I can’t believe this is her first nomination.

    • Bridget says:

She would have most likely been in there no matter what – she had a really strong showing for Ex Machina as well.

  8. AlmondJoy says:

I have yet to see anything she’s been in, but she seemed really sweet and likeable in her red carpet interview. Definitely gonna check out her work!

    • Abbott says:

She is amazing in Ex_Machina (and so is Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac).

    • Betti says:

Me too – am waiting for Ex-Machina to come out on Netflix as i refuse to pay additional money to watch it via Amazon Prime or iTunes.

  9. TreadStyle says:

The more interviews I see or read the more I love her. Not sure about the Oscar, no one stands out in that category.

  10. Josefina says:

She was amazing in The Danish Girl. I adored her character. My problem? That was definitely a leading performance. And so was Rooney Mara’s.

I haven’t watched all Oscar films, but I watched Carol and Joy and I’d glady take out Blanchett and Lawrence to make space for those 2. JLaw’s performance was the best part of Joy, but it wasn’t enough for me to finish watching that disaster. As for Blanchett, I think she’s the next Meryl Streep, getting nominated for whatever Oscar’y role she does. That was easily the weakest performance I’ve seen of her. Her lines sounded so recited. Rooney on the other hand was totally bringing it. I related to her character, I felt I truly knew her. Rooney has said questionable things and picked questionable roles but I do think she’s a phenomenal actress.

    • marlo says:

Not really that amazing, she was fine but not brilliant and definitely not major awards-worthy. She has time to improve. I found her too emphatic, her performance was not flowing, she seemed to get stuck in mannerisms all the time.

  11. Fluff says:

Cue the Fassbender stans screaming that she only got the award because she’s one of Weinstein’s Girls. Even though, you know, she’s never actually starred in a Weinstein movie, and 100% of her success, fame and award nominations have come from movies that are his direct rivals.

    • Abbott says:

Actually, Burnt and Tulip Fever are both Weinstein films, but I otherwise get what you’re saying.

  12. petitehirondelle says:

I think she will win but the oscar race for supporting is quite boring following what i have read from many people and people are focus this year on the oscars so white and the Leonardo di Caprio case so nobody realy cares. I still have that feeling that even if critics like her, the main public still don’t know her and she has not the star power

  13. Minxx says:

It’s obvious to everyone that Vikander and Mara should have been nominated in the Lead Actress category but they both in the Supporting since it’s easier to win. I think she’ll win – she really has the momentum, Mara is pretty much forgotten and Kate already has an Oscar. I find her rather bland and forgettable but I have no horse in this race.
The dress fits really well and it’s a very sleek look – I’d just get rid of the white patches in it.

    • msd says:

This year, lead actress was competitive, supporting was less so (it’s the reverse for the men, for a change) so there was a strong chance either or both would miss out. Category fraud is irritating but unfortunately the strategy usually works so the studios are going to keep doing it.

  14. anon says:

She doesn’t deserve an Oscar. She’s average, any good actress could have played her role. If she wins Kate is going to be seriously robbed, she was flawless in Steve Jobs. Plus, I really don’t get the hype about Alicia AT ALL. She’s not that talented, she’s not that beautiful, she’s definitely not sweet/cute. She’s average and easy to forget and that’s the worse thing for a celebrity/actor to be. But if all it takes for her PR posse to stop shoving her into our faces is to get her an oscar just give it to her.

  15. Shan says:

It will definitely be a Weinstein girl no matter what…

  16. Henna says:

I have seen ALOT of movies and performances throughout my life. And it’s a rare few that take my breath away. But I have to say, that Alicia Vikanders performance in The Danish Girl is one of the most gripping and moving pieces I have ever seen. She knocked me out. And I too am of the opinion that Saoirse Ronan will be in the books as an extraordinary talent. And she will be known as one of the truly great ones in film. But Vikanders performance, IMO, knocked out the competition in her category. Had she been competing against Saoirse, I’d say the same. If Vikander doesn’t get the Oscar for this one, I will be truly disappointed.
