Michael B. Jordan to star in ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ remake: love it or hate it?

I think Michael B. Jordan is one of the great actors of his generation. I tend to believe that if MBJ was a white actor with his box office track record and acting skills, people would be talking about him like he was the second coming of Ryan Gosling. Like, why isn’t there a “Hey Girl” moment for MBJ? Anyway, I also think it’s absolutely insane that MBJ hasn’t gotten more awards buzz and critical acclaim for his amazing performances in Creed and Fruitvale Station. But since MBJ is now known as “famously snubbed,” there are some benefits. Like, studios will take a pitch meeting with MBJ. Which is how MGM is greenlighting a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair with Michael in the lead. HE PITCHED IT!!!

Michael B. Jordan, the star of the boxing hit Creed, is reteaming with MGM for a remake of heist thriller The Thomas Crown Affair. The project is in the nascent stages as there is no writer or director attached. Yet the call is out and MGM brass, very happy with how things turned out with Creed, is intent on developing a vehicle around the actor. MGM had no comment.

Insiders say Jordan came up with idea for the remake and pitched it to MGM execs, with the two parties now teamed up to develop the project. Jordan has become one of the most promising young actors in Hollywood who broke out with the indie Fruitvale Station. While he starred in the panned Fantastic Four, Creed, the reboot of Rocky, proved to be major hit, grossing $109 million domestically on a budget of $35 million. He has yet to sign on to his next go movie but the Crown development is an example of his solidifying in-demand status.

[From THR]

While I don’t believe The Thomas Crown Affair needs to be remade yet again, I love the stones on Michael B. Jordan. Instead of going away and nursing a grudge, he parlayed his successful turn as leading man in Creed to pitch this in a meeting with MGM brass. It was HIS concept, and he’ll probably produce it too, or at the very least, he’ll have a big say in how the project is developed. And now that I’m thinking about it… I would totally watch MBJ as a suave, debonair art thief seducing an insurance recovery agent. Well played, Michael.

We really do not need a third version of the The Thomas Crown Affair but, sure, I’ll go see it if he is in it.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Liked the first, loved the second, looking forward to the third, but after that point, it probably should stop! Wonder who’ll play the insurance investigator.

    • TQB says:

Yes, I’ll see it, but he’s too young for the role!

  2. Kate says:

Love him. Dislike the idea. Too soon

  3. LB says:

I like him but I think there’s no hey girl movement for him like Ryan because he has expressed some dubious opinions about women and gender roles. I may be wrong about that but I know I was crushing on him since he was on All My Children and then I read an interview of his from a year or two ago, and the crush vaporized.

      • Kate says:

Yeah, but if I’m going to be crushing on someone, there’s options available that haven’t expressed backwards, misogynistic viewpoints on multiple occasions (this wasn’t a badly worded one liner, he’s shared various unpalatable opinions on ‘females’ at various times). Apologising isn’t the same as never having said it, and given the way people talk (complimentary) about him being pr savvy and image conscious, it’s hard to say if the apology is at all genuine anyway.

There was a lot of love for him before people started reading his interviews. I still like him as an actor, but I’ve completely gone off him as a celebrity crush, as have most women who’ve read his words I’d imagine.

    • lilacflowers says:

      Reggie Montgomery forever!

      • SusanneToo says:

        Always!!!

      • K says:

Loved him on AMC wonder how basketball camp is going good old Reggie should be NBA ready for as long as he’s been at basketball camp.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@K, Reggie has been at basketball camp so long that he could have retired from the NBA by now.

I do want to see him do something that reunites him with Amanda Seyfried

    • Lisa says:

Is having a hey girl movement a good thing or a bad thing for your career? It makes people take you less seriously as an actor

    • Saks says:

Agree. I really liked him but he killed my crush after he said in an interview he wouldn’t respect a women who had sex with with on a first date, then the “what a female wants” comments… He calmed everyone with a good PR apology but I don’t buy it, he seems to be quite a macho, he just watch his words now.

  4. Kiki says:

    Well played MBJ. Well played.

  5. CFY says:

Only MBJ could get me interested in seeing a third Thomas Crown Affair film. I hope it’s awesome and successful and he parlays that success into other opportunities. Reggie Montgomery for life!

    • Lama Bean says:

Especially because my longtime crush Pierce Brosnan was in the first remake. But MBJ is tasty too so I can make room for him. (I was all about those lips in Creed) Pierce will forever rule though.

  6. DeeDee says:

He’s great and I’m all for him in leading roles. However, do we need another remake of this movie?

  7. Wentworth Miller says:

    I’d definitely go see it!

  8. Talie says:

    I’m into it, but…

Thomas Crown already had a remake. In fact, the remake was better than the original…it was sexy, cool, & with age appropriate leads who had lived.

If this is some watered-down teen flick. Ugh…

    • Greenieweenie says:

Rene Russo was so hot in that movie. I remember watching it when I was like 17 and just dyyyyying to have that hair, that wardrobe, that life…

      • Talie says:

Yes! That was the first time I watched a movie with older leads and was like, That’s who I want to be! It was very aspirational.

      • Nev says:

WORD. Happening, sexy movie. Pierce was amazing too. So good.

      • Beckysuz says:

Yes!!! Her hair, that body. So nice to see an age appropriate woman opposite the male lead. Such a sexy movie

  9. ab says:

I love the thomas crown affair, and would definitely go see a version with MBJ in the lead. good for him for taking charge. that said I hope they develop it as more of an inspired-by version of the story. there’s room to change it up a little, in the vein of the dirty dancing not-a-remake-or-a-sequel havana nights.

    • lucy2 says:

Agreed, I would prefer it’s not an exact remake.
I’m glad for him – he’s a talented guy, and absolutely should have the opportunities that come with a hit movie.

  10. SusanneToo says:

If it gets made, I’m there. As with so many others here, his portrayal of Reggie Montgomery made me a fan forever.

  11. Sara says:

Tom and Lorenzo have established a “hey boo” for his posts, which I whole heartedly endorse. I am for anything staring MBJ and will of course see this.

  12. Teatimeiscoming says:

He’s too young to be TC. And who’s going to be cast as his Faye Dunaeay/Renee Russo? I can’t think of an actress to fill those shoes.
Maybe wait on this idea 20 years?

    • Tiffany says:

Tessa Thompson is on a hot streak right now. They were great in Creed. Why not. Coogler will be busy at Marvel so it will be interesting who the director will be.

  13. Mia4s says:

Well isn’t it nice that minority actors are also getting a shot at pointless and unnecessary Hollywood remakes that I won’t bother seeing! 😉

  14. Lucy says:

I saw Creed a few weeks ago and, during all the fight scenes, I was pretty much at the edge of my seat, as if the fights were real. MOAR MBJ, please!!!

  15. Melody says:

I hope they get John McTiernan to reprise his Director job for this TCA. I loved his version with Brosnan and Russo – and it’s so unfair what the government did to him. He is due a comeback – awesome director.

  16. Cynthia says:

Seriously what is up with all these remakes or franchise. That is why Netflix and other providers are killing the movie going. With all the fresh ideas out there we are stuck on remakes

  17. Alex says:

I’ll watch anything with MBJ in it. And yes it makes me angry that he was snubbed twice for excellent performances

  18. Kimmy says:

Creed was good, but he broke my heart in Fruitvale. That’s when he was really snubbed for an Oscar.

    Also FNL…I love Vince Howard.

I don’t think Hollywood knows what to do with him yet. He is really the only male actor in his age range that I can see rivaling JLaw’s box office and critical success.

    • lucy2 says:

I loved him so much on FNL (and his brief stint on Parenthood). FNL was excellent all around and created characters that you really cared about, but he managed to stand out even further and be someone you rooted so hard for.

  19. Debutante says:

this was remade already .. Jeez.

  20. K says:

Admittedly I haven’t seen the other two, but I will see any movie MBJ does (except fantastic 4 have to have lines) and maybe it’s not a remake and more of a concept?

However, I have to say go him! Honestly he is being extremely proactive in his career and demanding roles and projects. Would I rather see him play JP Knight, or a completely new and original project of course but maybe he knows he can’t get those made yet and is playing the long game. I don’t know but I do know is that the people who aren’t white males that are truly successful take ownership. They write, produce and concept their own work which is sad but good for him.

I knew this guy was going to be huge when he was falling for Jodie on AMC.

  21. Ashley says:

The director in my opinion is gonna be the biggest factor.Creed could have fallen into Terminator territory but Coogler’s direction made it the movie that it was. So im curious who they get.

  22. CornyBlue says:

Best performance of last year by a male lead. Still cannot believe he is not nominated.
I don’t care what he does as long as he gets Oscar nominated real soon and snatches that Oscar from one of those supposedly overdue white people.

  23. Roller74 says:

Why? Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan were fantastic in the 1999 remake. It’s hard to watch a movie where the leads are in their 20’s and are billionaire rich. It’s simply not believable. And I like Michael B. Jordan but he just doesn’t crackle like a log on fire the way Pierce does.

    • Pix says:

100% agree. Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo were so hot in that movie. I think it’s way too soon for a remake.

  24. lem says:

After all the outrage over him playing Johnny Storm b/c he’s black, I love that he pitched a remake of this movie with a historically white male lead. Good for him.

  25. AlmondJoy says:

I love all things MBJ. I’ll go see this movie for sure.

  26. iheartgossip says:

I love him. If H’wood cannot come up with any fresh movie ideas, let them remake them all. The remake is never as good as the original. We all know that already.

  27. Donna says:

    Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.

  28. Tallia says:

Michael B. Jordan is an amazing actor who deserves an original movie. I am so over re-makes. Come on Hollywood, are you really telling me you cannot find a new script to produce?

  29. Garbo Talks says:

MBJ had a meeting with execs from MGM who are trained to never say no to talent. There is no writer and no director. By the time they get a script right, he will have a million other project commitments and be unavailable. If he doesn’t lose interest, enough time may pass that he will have grown into the part. From the studio point of view this is a small investment.

What’s really galling is that Brosnan and his producing partner tried for years to get a sequel going with little support from the studio. She died in January of cancer, so I guess in Hollywood years a month is enough time to let the body cool before handing over the franchise to someone else.
