Leonardo DiCaprio wins the Oscar for Best Actor for ‘The Revenant’

wenn23467990

This one was a given. Of course Leo DiCaprio won. We knew he was going to win since December, pretty much. We knew he was going for it when he found out that he had hired all the Oscar consultants in Hollywood. And, at the end of the day, I don’t blame him for wanting it and I don’t blame him for going for it. But I’ve enjoyed his desperation and neediness. I actually never wanted it to end.

So Leo won. He unclenched. They made him sit through months of shilling, then they made him sit through four hours of other people being handed Oscars. They made him sit through really long clips of all of the other actors. He RUSHED the stage, and of course he got a standing ovation. For Boy Drama In the Woods.

Leo thanked Tom Hardy first off, and for what it’s worth, I do think that they’re really buds. Then he thanked Inarritu, his team, his family, his friends (the P-ssy Posse), then he made a larger statement about climate change, 2015 being the hottest year on record, something something indigenous people: “Climate change is real. It’s happening right now.”

Also, you’ve got to love how hard Leo has been trolled by, like, Establishment Hollywood. They’re like, “we’re giving you this Oscar but we’re going to make fun of you the whole time.” Who greenlighted the fake bear in the audience at the Oscars? Because the fact that Leo was so TIGHT and PINCHED that he couldn’t even laugh? That made it next-level funny.

The planet Earth helped Leo win his Oscar

  3. tifzlan says:

The bear hahahahaha so perfect, i love that everyone was laughing except Leonardo.

    • raincoaster says:

I was pleased to see Jennifer Garner hasn’t overdone the Botox and can still throw a genuine expression of glee. I like to see presenters having a blast at these events.

  4. lunchcoma says:

YAWN. But whatever. His Oscar campaign was tiresome as all hell, but maybe now that he has one he’ll go and do something interesting and experimental and daring.

    • Diana B says:

My thoughts exactly. Perhaps now that he has one he can star doing movies for the enjoyment of it and not these oscar-baity films he has been giving without exception for the past few years.

      • Pablo says:

Most of his films are NOT Oscar baity. Just because a film is good doesn’t mean is Oscar-baity. The Danish Girl, The Theory of Everything, The King’s Speech… are Oscar baity. Django Unchained, Wolf of Wall Street, Inception… are not.

Plus on average his roles are way more “daring” than the ones choosen by the average Hollywood star.

      • lilacflowers says:

        A Scorsese film is Oscar-baity.

      • Josephine says:

@ Pablo: I agree – Leo’s films seem like a weird collection of movies that he feels like making, not your typical serious, Oscar-bait movies. I don’t get the hate for him – I guess because of his personal life? I haven’t loved every movie he was in, but he’s had a very solid career and can actually act.

      • BB says:

I don’t really agree with the Scorsese comment. I think maybe you could say Gangs of New York and the Aviator were Oscar baity (and the children’s movie he made about the kid in the train station that I didn’t bother to google lol). However, a lot of his films are ones I could watch many times (Goodfellas and Raging Bull are masterpieces). I think films like The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, The Danish Girl, The Kings Speech are films that are a one and done like a lot of other Oscar bait. I truly enjoy a film I can watch multiple times and Goodfellas is one of the those films for me, and if you are talking about current Leo Muse Scorsese, I could watch The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street multiple times.

      • Josefina says:

        @Pablo
Those films as a whole may not be Oscar-bait, but acting in them sure is (with the exception of Inception). Come on now. Leo’s thirst for that statue is Hollywood’s worst kept secret.

  5. mbg says:

he’s had more than a few roles that deserved it more than this one.

    • pinetree13 says:

I agree, he should have got it for a different nom (this was his sixth nomination!). I am happy for him but at the same time the memes about him never getting an Oscar are so funny that I was kind of disappointed he finally won and now that chapter in meme history is closed. But seriously, he was overdue and it sucks that this is the film he gets it for when he’s been in much better movies.

  6. Spook says:

    Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

I love him, but Manpain In The Woods: The Movie was the worst.

  7. Mojoman says:

Finally! Give that man a damn statue already

    • fiona says:

Seriously? Keep drinking the kool-aid. He’s just overrated.

      • pinetree13 says:

I disagree. Personally I may not like him, but he is an amazing actor. In the departed he made that movie so much more intense as he portrayed the anxiety and nervousness so well. Like him or not, he is a great actor.

      • isabelle says:

Yes he is Leo always playing what Leo would do in that situation. He never hides in his films. You are constantly aware its Leo.

  8. Tiffany says:

All joking aside, I am happy for him.

Now my joke from the open post. His next VS girlfriend can go away with him. Dude, take a vacation. A long one.

  9. Sammy says:

He is going to have one epic yacht party.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

Do you know that The Revenant’s filming has been stopped during a week for his birthday ?
The yacht party will be longggggg

    • Original T.C. says:

Yes he finally got his Oscar. He can now do whatever he feels like doing including walking naked in the streets with MULTIPLE blonde VS models under age 25.

Thank god we don’t have to put up with another Leo Oscar campaign. Our national nightmare is over! Congrats Leo and goodbye!

      • Tate says:

        Exactly. Buh-bye Leo.

      • saltandpepper says:

What makes you think that? He’ll continue acting and will be nominated again. No doubt. And the whole bear thing. Over it. He deserved this win – he is a brilliant actor and perhaps he should have gotten it for something else, but he didn’t. I think he’s wonderful and a kind, compassionate human being who is doing a lot for the environment. So much hate on here. Sad really. His private life is exactly that: private.

  10. kri says:

That bear was robbed. All she wanted was for him to look her way. Maybe she would have had a shot if she’d been wearing the new push-up from Victoria’s Secret…

  11. lskfjsld says:

I hate that he won. His performance was so one tone. He was basically reacting to the environment which ANY human would do. The only decent performance was Tom Hardy in the movie. I hate politics of the Oscars. The good news is hopefully he will go away now.

    • Jess says:

“He was basically reacting to the environment which ANY human would do.”

Well if you break it down like that, you could say that about ANY actor. That seems like a really weird criticism to make.

      • lskfjsld says:

That’s what how you view an actor?! Their normal physical reactions to environmental factors like water current, or extreme cold weather. That’s not what Michael Fassbender did for Steve Jobs. That’s is not where near the beautiful complexity Cate Blancett brought or the fragility yet eerieness of Natalie Portman in brought in Black Swan. Or how about in Tom Hardy. He wasn’t Tom Hardy he seems like the character. Dicarpio NEVER disappeared into the role. I liked his performances in the Departed, Shutter Island but honestly he lacks courage. He never immerses himself in the character and lets go of his ego. I can always see his ego. He has a wall. I heard his did a good job in Grape Gilbert but I have yet to watch it. He had a hard shoot that doesn’t mean he gave a good performance. His connection with his son never seemed genuine nor with his wife in the flashbacks.

      • Word says:

        she meant the extreme cold.

      • Magpie says:

No, she’s saying the exact same thing as HR’s third brutally honest oscar voter said (and to some extent number one too). I totally agree.
There is no real vulnerability or nuance in his acting. He can’t do what Rylance did. Leo gets only the best meatiest roles and overacts.
It would be nice if he did some real independent cinema now that he doesn’t need the oscar bait. It would challenge him as an actor.

    • Jess says:

I actually think it would be great to see him in a comedy, his roles are usually so serious and I wonder of he’d be able to let go and have some fun.

  12. Saks says:

I’m so happy for him, Alejandro and Chivo!!

  13. Tulip says:

    Congrats to Leo!

  14. Bunny ears says:

After this, I don’t want to hear a single word about Leo for a. very. long. time.
(Now he can slink to St Tropaz with his next under 25 gf and hide until eternity. Please.)

  15. TotallyBiased says:

    That’s……….nice.

  16. Shoe says:

happy for Leo though im not sure revernant was his best performance

    • Snazzy says:

Agreed! I re-watched The Departed this weekend, and remembered why I like Leo so much as an actor even if don’t really like him as a person. I still won’t see Leo vs the Bear

      • Esmom says:

The Departed was, I think, my favorite performance of his. Plus he was at the peak of his hotness back then.

      • pinetree13 says:

YES! He was AMAZING in the Departed. That was the one he should have got the Oscar for. His performance was so, so good in that movie. It does suck he finally got his oscar for this movie.

  17. Kimmy says:

Although his campaign was tiresome and I fell asleep half way through The Revenant, I couldn’t help but be happy for him for FINALLY winning. I preferred him in some of his other nominated roles, but I do think he was the best of those nominated this year.

  18. Mkaayy says:

This is one classy dude who can separate his private from his professional life. CAn you imagine how many times he must haave been asked to ditch the models in order to appear more serious? And I have never seen him shirtless on a magazine cover. Let’s make fun of him all we want but at the end of the day we are faceless people on the internet and he’s an oscar winner doing what he loves. Kate Winslet is in love with this guy ffs

  19. Lucy says:

And so, the Dicapriossance is finally upon us. BEHOLD. 🙂 in all honesty, though, Congrats!!

  20. magster says:

I am so glad he won. Leo has been giving great performances for years now. People should focus more on his talent than his dating life. Why do you care? He’ s not breaking the law by dating women in their 20,s, is he? Go Leo!

  21. Pancake says:

Very happy for Leo. Interesting he keeps thanking Arnon Milchan in every speech associated with this role. That guy is a VERY interesting producer who really loves films. Used to be an arms dealer for Israel.

On Leo’s speech: I really don’t think he’ll ever have kids. He’s got a bleak view of humanity starting from when his parents hung that painting over his crib (great story in Rolling Stone).

  22. Pepper says:

I was so hoping for an upset just for the fun of it. But honestly, of all the nominees, Leo deserves it this year. It’s not his best role, but he was still excellent. Matt Damon was perfect for the Martian, but it was still pretty much just Matt Damon on Mars. One of his better films but far from his strongest role. Cranston was good, but his film sucked and he didn’t really rise above it like he needed to. Same with Fassbender. Redmayne was just awful, I’m pissed he even got a nomination. So Leo was the obvious choice this year.

    • Pancake says:

I couldn’t believe how bad MacBeth was. So overrated. Good for filmmakers to watch for technique but no mass appeal and so gory. Fass was good though but neither he nor Marion could save that film.

    • SusanneToo says:

Paul Dano deserved a nomination, Michael B. Jordan deserved a nomination, Idris Elba deserved a nomination, any number of actors deserved a nomination more than some of those nominated, including Leo.

  23. Tala D says:

A part of me is sad that he won for THIS role, because it will now be the role that defines him most of all (except Titanic ofc). Really, The Revenant *sigh* Idk..for me I’ve seen him in more iconic and likeable.

  24. felixswan2 says:

    Ugh, Dicrapio.

  25. Dangles says:

Congratulations, Leo! Throughly deserved for being such a wonderful actor over a long period of time. And how about that acceptance speech? Amazing!

  26. Boxy Lady says:

I’m glad he finally won. The whole thing about him not winning an Oscar time after time was starting to get Susan Lucci-esque.

  27. Anastasiia says:

Well, for me Leo is a guarantee that any movie with his presence is worth of attentive watching. He doesn’t make mistakes, he is always on a high level. Not just one hit wonder. He is very solid actor, so it’s fair victory. Congrats!!!

  28. NUTBALLS says:

I’m glad he finally got his statue. He deserves it for a lifetime of great work, even if I thought Revenant was a snoozer.

  29. teacakes says:

I won’t lie, I love that his win happened in the same year as #OscarSoWhite lol

  30. Dana m says:

I’m very happy for Leo!! This is a well deserved award for his talent and all of his hard work on many excellent roles through out his career. Glad he was finally recognized by the academy.

  31. Mimz says:

I’m happy for him, I don’t care about his personal life at all, but the guy is really a consistent, great actor and this was a long time coming. Regardless of the fact that this was not his best performance (allegedly, I didn’t watch Boy Drama In The Woods yet), it was a long time coming. Now, he can go back to whatever he loves doing the most, and we can focus on someone else.
    I loved his speech too.

    • Mimz says:

I don’t get it when people merge personal lives with actual talent. I get that people are put off by his womanizing/modelizing ways, but he’s not a criminal.
He advocates and puts a lot of money where his mouth is – climate change, etc. He is a brilliant actor, and embodies the character that he is given. I was never a fan of the person, when he was in my country filming blood diamond I heard multiple accounts of his grumpiness, but I still enjoyed the movie.

Everyone is likable or not, people will love or hate us, but our talent shouldn’t be questioned because of our life choices. And I can respect a man who knows he is a womanizer, instead of being a serial cheater with an unhappy wife just for show. Life happens to all of us.

That being said, I do not include criminals, Cosby’s and the like in this category.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

        Well said, Mimz

      • Josefina says:

I feel like the Leo apologists are the ones overreacting to what WE are saying. Sure there’s some side-eyeable people who seem to passionately hate Leo for just existing, but most of us are just exhausted of him. Few people are saying Leo is a bad actor, even less are saying he’s a bad person. But this particular performance and Leo’s “it’s finally my time” campaign have been shoved down our throats so much, we can’t help be annoyed by his face. Especially if we never were big fans to begin with. Personally I think Leo has great eye for scripts and really knows how to pick good roles, but I don’t consider him a particularly gifted actor (he’s definitely good, but no Daniel Day Lewis).

This is no different than what happened to Hathaway and Cumberbatch. Leo had the most invasive campaign of the year and he’s rightfully getting the backlash actors get for that.

    • Kitten says:

      Everything you said. Congrats, Leo!

  32. lenje says:

I didn’t watch the Oscar but am now intrigued to see the bear reference. And speaking of bears, “Bear Story” won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Films! It’s clearly the year of the bears!

  33. Pablo says:

I think he deserves to have an Oscar on his resumé but The Revenant was not one of his best 3 (or even 5) performances in my opinion.

  34. fiona says:

Ugh give me a break. He really is overrated and disgusting.

He only won because people kept commenting that “it was his time.” What about his actual performance? Nobody seems to care. Just that he “deserved it”. I doubt half these people even saw the Revenant.

He’s a sleaze and an overrated hypocrite actor. I just hope people wise up to him. They don’t though. People are stupid.

  35. pb says:

So happy for my Leo! While I don’t think this was his best permormance I still really enjoyed him in The Revenant. But we are still talking about Leo Di Caprio so he sets the bar really high for himself and this was a decent Performance. Also I think The Revenant was a beautifully made Drama. So I don’t really get the shade it gets on this plattform. Do all Oscar nominated movies need to have a deeper meaning? I don’t think so. It was a book adaption after all and I think Iñárritu did a heck of a good Job bringing the book to life.

  36. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I’m in the minority. I like him & I’m very happy for him! I DO want Bryan Cranston to win an Oscar someday soon & I love Fassbender, but I wanted Leo to take it all. Yay!!

    • Claudia says:

      With you!

    • Pablo says:

You are in the majority. You are just in the minority here, a place full of people who think all men should “settle down”, get married and have children, and hate everyone who doesn’t.

      • Ennie says:

I don’t think so. Maybe I’d Leo dated women more in his age range, then he would not be made fun of so much.
No one has said he need to settle. In my opinion, he is a hypocrite who cares about environment but his vacations / lifestyle use a lot of fuel.
If he were more congruent, I’ll believe him.

      • maggie says:

His boat uses a lot of fuel? Please! When they’re anchored which is most of the time they don’t use any. So he parties on a boat with lots of pretty girls, he’s single! Unreal!

      • BB says:

Yeah, I’d rather a guy say screw it I never want to settle down and I’m gonna date model after model than settle down, cheat on his wife over and over and have kids just to fulfill an image. I’m a Leo apologist, I’ll own it!

      • Josefina says:

I can care less about his private life. I’m just exhausted of his invasive and victimizing Oscar campaign. Nice try at making reverse sexism happen.

  37. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

And puh-lease! He’s been laughing at all the jokes the entire time. The bear in the balcony was lame and tired. However, the bear clip with Leslie Jones was hilarious! Soo good, I was dying! Also loved seeing Whoopi in Joy, Chris Rock in The Martian & omg Tracy Morgan as The Danish Girl nearly made me pee my pants, so funny

  38. GlimmerBunny says:

I was really just extatically happy for him. He’s my favorite actor and deserved it so much!

  39. Sabrina says:

Congrats to Leo. I hope that he decides to do some non-Oscar bait roles now that he’s finally won an Oscar. I definitely would not have minded if he didn’t win for this role though.

    • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I checked his IMBD and I saw loads of movies he’s producing (43 MOVIES!) but apparently not acting in any. He produces some films with his dad (the guy with long black hair that Leo was talking to when Lady Gaga touched him at Golden Globes), and I *think* he’s producing a movie with Tom Hardy as a partner too.

  40. Magnoliarose says:

Lukas must be very proud. His campaign was far too much and desperate so I feel like whatever now go hibernate for awhile.

  41. Pablo says:

I keep reading he takes Oscar-bait roles. Do people know what an Oscar-bait movie is? Just because a movie is good doesn’t mean is Oscar-baity. Biopics about people with discapacity are Oscar-bait, movies about homosexuality in a forbidden time are Oscar-bait… most of Leo’s movies are not Oscar bait at all. They are just good.

    • lilacflowers says:

      Like Hoover?

    • Josefina says:

Honey just stop. Leo’s thirst for that Oscar is Hollywood’s worst kept secret. He pretty much admitted to it with this ridiculous victimizing campaign. Supporting roles in Tarantino films are Oscar bait in the acting categories (Waltz, Leigh, Travolta, Jackson). A leading role in a Scorcesse production released in December is Oscar bait. Telling the whole world about your suffering for the art in every outlet imaginable for the past 6 months is the mother of all Oscar baits. Leo’s not an indie actor doing risky and innovative projects. He’s a Hollywood A-lister playing the Hollywood game.

If you’re happy for him that’s cool but don’t go around acting like Leo didn’t care about this. He campaigned the hell out of that Oscar and that’s why he got it, just like most other winners for the past 20 years.

  42. paolanqar says:

As I see it Leo finally won his long overdue Oscar and global recognition for the best performance of his life: What’s eating Gilbert Grape.
he is one solid actor even if The Revenant didn-t deserve a special recognition.
He had a consistent career and apart from his behaviour around women I have always found him very likeable and intelligent up until his Oscar campaign.
Now he needs to go away for a while and stop whining and then come back with a really cool project he believes in about his beloved climate change subject.
I am very happy for him though. He can start breathing again.

    • Wellsie says:

Right? I think that was his best performance as well. Ever since then when I watch him I just see Leo, not his character.

And wasn’t the joke Ryan Gosling told with Russell Crow a shot at Leo as well? About best adapted screenplay being an award for the screen play that ‘adapted best to harsh conditions’? I enjoyed that as well, if it was.

      • elle says:

Me, three. I was amazed by him in Gilbert Grape. Haven’t really been impressed by any performance of his since.

  43. Nenae says:

Am happy for his win cos he is my fave actor after Christian Bale.
In my honest opinion this wasn’t his best performance and I’ve watched all his movies. He deserved the Oscar for any of these; What’s eating Gilbert’s grape, The quick and the dead, The Aviator,The departed, Blood Diamond, Inception, Shutter Island, even his performance in Django Unchained was better than that of The Revenant.
He won the Oscar cos he was ‘due’ and also for the very good body of work he’s put out over the years.
    Congrats to him though.

    • Abby says:

I love Leo and Christian Bale as well. Throwback to my teen years I guess. I’ll watch anything either of them are in!

  44. MacScore says:

I really don’t understand the hate. In my opinion, this is a very well-deserved award – perhaps not necessarily for his role in the Revenant, but for a solid, convincing body of work over the years. He was phenomenal in “Blood Diamond” – a South African accent is notoriously hard and he nailed it; he was fantastic in “The Departed” – an all-around superb film… ; completely believable in “Inception”, which I never get tired of watching…..the list goes on. Very happy for him indeed. Enjoy the win, Leo.

  45. BellaBella says:

No specific call out to Kate???? Jerk face!

  46. Emily says:

I was hoping that he’d end his Oscar speech with an “I love you Lukas!!!!”

  47. Drusilla says:

    Congratulations, Leo! 🎉

  48. Miran says:

    Lmfao, f i n a l l y. Congrats Leo.

  49. suzanne says:

Thank God we won’t have to see his face for a while.

  50. CdnDutchGirl says:

“And I’d like to thank Canada and global warming for the brutally cold set that I had to work in…”

  51. Tallia says:

    Meh. Now go away.

  52. Tiny Martian says:

Am I the only one here who wondered what was wrong with his mouth? He looked a little like he had a Bell’s Palsy during his acceptance speech. Now I’ve heard it might have been chewing tobacco?????

Anyway, I actually thought it was cute that he ran up on stage like that. He wasn’t bothering to hide his excitement, and I liked it!

  53. Anna says:

Can’t stand his pasty smug bloated face. GO AWAY.

  54. Ashley says:

Some of you on here are so miserable and angry,it’s hilarious. Congrats,Leo! Finally! He did an amazing job in the revenant, and innaritu did an excellent job bringing this book to life.
