Bette Midler to Kim K: ‘Anyone can take a selfie but not everyone can take a joke’

As we discussed yesterday, Kim Kardashian went a Yeezy-style Twitter rant on her haters. On Monday, Kim posted a nude selfie on her social media, and people understandably reacted (since she just did it for attention anyway). Some of those reactions came from Bette Midler, Piers Morgan and Chloe Grace Moretz. Kim name-checked all three of them in her rant. Some thought the flavor was off, and that Kanye West or Khloe Kardashian might have been controlling Kim’s Twitter briefly. Kim wants you to know that she can do Twitter rants too:

So, there you go. Let Kim be Kim. Some of the most insulting tweets were sent to Bette Midler, who actually just tweeted a rather mild statement about how Kim loves to show off her body and we’ve seen it all before. Kim trolled Midler, telling her to send nudes, and Kim also tweeted “hey @BetteMidler I really didn’t want to bring up how you sent me a gift awhile back trying to be a fake friend then come at me.” Bette had a response:

Which is sort of classy. Seriously, Bette’s comment was so mild and Kim’s overreaction was so extra, I sort of feel like Bette is rolling her eyes at Kim now.

Speaking of eye-rolls, Miley Cyrus also wants you to pay attention. She Instagram’d a Kimoji (the one of Kim’s cartoon butt) and included this message:

Dear women, you ALL are acting tacky AF! Why don’t we overly (myself included) fortunate women come together and try to create and bring jobs to other women in desperate need of them so they can support not only THEMSELVES but their families! #happyinternationalwomensday can we all put the c–tiness aside for one f–king day and love / celebrate one another! PS no matter how hard you (or myself) work NEVER will I feel I am worthy of the comfort I live in…. Because so many others while I tuck myself in at night are laying their head on the pavement, dreaming of all the things we take for granted every day. Much love to all my women!!!!

[From Miley’s Instagram]

Nothing says female solidarity than Miley Cyrus calling women “tacky AF” whilst using a butt Kimoji. Please, somebody help Miley, she’s dying of thirst.

PS… I’m covering Kim’s subscription app essay separately, no thread-jacking!

I’m done with this feminism BS. Anytime someone calls someone out they go and hide behind it. Like no. Stop. This has nothing to do with that. It has to do with the fact that the Kardashians continuing to be hypocrites. They can body shame others like their brother Rob but God forbid someone calls them out on their BS. It suddenly becomes the end of the world.

    • felixswan2 says:

      @ SAM +1000

    • LookyLoo says:

And feminism has nothing to do with showing your bits every time the wind blows. Do you see men getting naked for attention?

      • Jen43 says:

This. Showing your body or doing p0rn is not empowering to women. It just isn’t.

      • Wren says:

Men don’t have to get naked for attention, and that’s part of the problem. Sadly, the K’s embody the notion that a woman’s primary purpose is to be decorative. That’s what they do, that’s what they’re all about, and it sucks.

      • Sarah says:

Hmm although there are basic sexist differences between what men and women are “allowed” to show. Men are frequently topless and noone seems to care (I do – I dont want to see that) but if a woman is topless she’s anti feminist and showing her bits to get attention?
That doesn’t sit right with me.

    • detritus says:

Different sects of feminism disagree with each other. The same way political candidates within the same party disagree.

I agree with the section about body shaming, sort of. It sucks she’s a giant hpocrit and shamed Rob. The thing is, it’s never ok. It’s not ok even when the other person is a hypocritical ass hat who has done it to others.

In this case, shame Kim for being an unquenchably thirsty girl. Shame her for her hypocrisy. Shame her for her bullying behaviour. Shame her for her low level clap backs. There’s tons of ammunition.

Do not shame her for her choice to show her body or how she uses it. That opens the door for other women to be shamed because they weren’t ‘good enough’. I’m sick of people applying rules only when it benefits them or its someone they like.

      • Fiorella says:

To me it wasn’t body shaming more like. “your schtick is kind of repetitive”
Similar to Taylor swift being mocked for her songs. If people think the way you make money has joke potential why not? Life would be better with fewer jokes? 🙁

      • V4Real says:

Right. She wasn’t being body shamed. She was being called out for showing what the world has seen a thousand times over.

And I’m so tired of these freaking made up words like body-shaming. What’s next, hair shaming, feet shaming, tall shaming, short shaming, unhappy shaming (Rooney Mara) dumb shaming, smart shaming and so on.

Plus it’s only shaming if the target feels ashamed. And as we can probably see there is no shame in Kim’s game; so there.

      • SydneySnider says:

Brava, V4Real! Lots of good examples there. I have noticed that Kimbo gets a lot of short-shaming in the DM comments…

Detritus: I do agree that there is plenty to poke her about, other than her body shape or size.

I read that Ariel Winter has now jumped into the fray to defend KimmieKakes. Are they friends?

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

What I don’t understand is why she thinks she can use feminism as a weapon, she’s never done anything for women. She yells “feminism” & hides behind Khloe & Kanye, he must be sharing the crazy Kool aid with her. There was a clip on Instagram about an episode of the Kardashians, where Kim was crying because a magazine posted pictures of her naked. Yes the pictures had been approved by her & her Pimp of a mother. She didn’t thought they weren’t going to use them so she cries & yells at Pimp Mama Kris for that, saying she doesn’t want to be known as the girl that always gets naked & doesn’t want to get naked anymore. That was a few faces ago but still.

    • Asiyah says:

      Speak on it, Sam.

  2. greenmonster says:

Yes! I love Bette Midler so much.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Twitter has really brought out the best in people.

  4. lovemesseg says:

    Bette is a QUEEN!

  5. jeanpierre says:

I’m rolling my eyes so hard at the “talented” people like BM who gave that story legs. Shut it already you’re no better than kim.

    • mp says:

Yes! This!! Why do we give this more attention! I don’t mind any other celeb news, EXCEPT for Kim Kardashian. I purposefully avoid clicking on anything related to her, and even on CB (this is the exception) because I don’t want to count as one of her clicks. AHHHH. I understand she is putting ppl’s kids thru college, but seriously I wish more people would be like that news anchor (was it Tom Brokaw?) who way back was reading about Lindsay Lohan evading court and in the middle was like, “Stop, I can’t do this. This is beneath me. This isn’t real news.”

    • Asiyah says:

I have to agree with this.

  6. InvaderTak says:

Bette Milder went down in my opinion for even tweeting these losers.

  7. GingerCrunch says:

Dear god, that first photo…not this early in the morning.

  8. Nancy says:

You speak the truth Bette, her inside organs may be the only thing she hasn’t exposed. Celebs are so afraid to step on the toes of these people, big ups to Bette, keep them coming.

  9. lilacflowers says:

    “I swear I’m funny too!”

But Kim, those tweets were not funny.

    • greenmonster says:

I don’t think Kim knows what funny means. Someone hand her a dictionary. And show her how to use it.

    • Tate says:

My first thought was… I must have missed the funny tweets.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Exactly. Kim wanted to get in on the dragging like the cool kids are doing and flopped hard.

    • Petee says:

Kim has never been funny.Ever.She has no sense of humor at all. Those tweets were childish and stupid. And She can say whatever she wants but she did not write those tweets. They reek of Kanye.

    • swak says:

Not only that, but the tweets Kanye and Khloe put out there are not funny either.

    • pinetree13 says:

      Yeah Kim, you misspelled ‘petty’

  10. yolo112 says:

I appreciate what Pink said as well. Kim later went on to say how sexy and empowered she feels about her body…..buuuuut… a- that’s an old pic and b- is it really her body?? I mean, it’s the body she paid for but it’s totally fake.. The #liberated pic she posted was one of the last pics of her before face fuq-up surgery number 97583, when there was still a slight resemblance of who she used to be. Shallow. Thirsty. Ugly. But certainly not empowered, liberated or sexy. I’m bored with KK and her high school antics… She’s 35.

    Bette ftw
    Kim..sit down.

  11. D says:

Did anyone really think Kim’s tweets were funny though? To me it just seemed like she showed her true colors . But I absolutely loathe the Kardashians, so there is nothing anyone could say to them that would make me feel even the slightest bit of sympathy.

    • Snowflake says:

No they weren’t funny. I watched TMZ last night and they showed her tweets and acted like they were funny. But they didn’t have everyone comment like they do others, so it makes me think it was a PMK sponsored bit. Harvey just showed her tweets and said they were funny but they really weren’t, they were lame. See Amber rose for good clapbacks, hehe.

  12. Lindy79 says:

As others have said, none of this was slut shaming, so people need to stop with that. Kim and her whole family are attention vaccuums whose only purpose and goal in life is attention and money. That selfie was nothing to do with female empowerment or owning your sexuality, none of anything she does is, or she’d have publicly called out her husband for his BLATANT shaming and misogyny towards Amber Rose.

Didn’t Miley Cyrus recently post some pictures of one of the Fuller House actresses, who has since gotten clean, on a bender, and gotten a lot of criticism for it…so yeah, real supportive…. take a seat Miley and continue working with Terry Richardson….

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Um exactly. I’m waiting for Miley to explain that one because she took her luxury and also used it to embarass another woman.

      • BB says:

That made me so angry. Jodi was a child star, too, and obviously had substance abuse issues that she overcame. Not every child star is so lucky to transition.

      • Marty says:

Thank you! I saw that post she did on Jodie, it was such a low thing to do.

Not to mention when has Miley ever done anything to prop other women up? Giving lip service to an issue is not contributing jack s**t. She has gone out of her way to tear other women down, but now she cares what people say about Kim K. of all people? Give me a break.

    • lucy2 says:

I saw that – just the day before she was horrible to another woman for no reason other than to be bitchy and rude, and then has the gall to declare everyone else tacky and wrong for not supporting other women. Shut up already, Miley.

  13. Barrett says:

Miley makes no sense she posted a degrading belittling take down of another female the other day.

It was a picture of Sweeting (not sure spelling) from full house before getting sober.

  14. NewWester says:

Bette does have a point about Kim not being able to take a joke. For a group of people who are really famous because of one family member doing a pOrn and really have no talents except do pap strolls they have very thin skin and lack of humour. Someone from that family is always snarking or hissing at someone on Twitter. Sometimes it is best to just let things go, but we all know the Kardashians love any attention. It is like oxygen to them

  15. Barrett says:

And Bette Midlers joke was funny and mild. Kim would have come across better if she laughed at the joke showing she could make fun of herself and roll with it.

    • lucy2 says:

She also could have ignored it. But of course, that wouldn’t get her the attention she’s so desperate for.

  16. CharlotteCharlotte says:

I am seriously missing something somewhere. I don’t know if a missing gene, or what, but I do not understand going onto social media purely to stir up shit. I don’t know you, I’ll never meet you, and your life choices won’t affect me in any way shape or form, but I’m going to pick a fight with you anyway. Just because.
    Is that it?
Is KK trying to be a hero to that demographic? It’s like something my four year old would do. I like to describe it as him “studying the human condition”. But I just don’t think that’s what everyone else is doing.

    • Susan says:

Charlottecharlotte here is why you don’t get it:
      1. You have a life (in the real world, not on the Internet)
      2. You have brains
      3. You have class
      4. You have something to contribute to the world other than being argumentative

    • OhDear says:

I don’t have strong opinions on the Kardashian family, but they do these things because their entire business model is based on their getting attention, both good and bad. To be honest, I don’t get why people who dislike them don’t just ignore them instead of getting worked up about it, which is precisely what they want.

  17. Esther says:

i didnt think Bette Middlers tweet was funny, it was really tame and hardly hostile. the reaction though was way overboard.

  18. Carol says:

I’d rather have people just ignore her sad naked selfie. It’s just a body that everyone has seen over and over again. Boring

  19. Kim doesn’t like that Kylie has surpassed her. At this point in the game, it’s honestly gotten to be “another day, another naked Kardashian”. No one cares anymore.

  20. LookyLoo says:

When did Kim turn into Khaleesi? You know what’s tacky? That braided wig.

  21. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

“Anyone can take a selfie but not everyone can take a joke”

Some people can’t take either Bette, if she could she wouldn’t be caught photo editing her pics every day. Her weak clapback at you was her way of trying to edit another situation. She posted a ‘hot’ selfie and was surprised when all she got was mockery in return. Even with her aggressive tweets it amused me how both Bette and Piers cut right through the BS and left her having to defend herself as ‘funny’.

As for Miley, her hypocrisy is just ridiculous. Surely she didn’t forget tweeting that photo of Sweeting from days of her addiction?

  22. klaas says:

Kim would be funny if she replied something like “but I already showed my x rays”. But no, she had to slam BT’s age. Like, you know, geting old is funny and going to bed early is lame and not hip and cool.

  23. Pepper says:

This is like the 5th time Bette’s made ‘jokes’ about young celebrities bodies. She used to get attention by hoisting her boobs up to her chin, and now those days are over she get’s attention by being snarky about women playing the same game she used to. It’s not hilarious or smart, it’s just desperate fame-whoring. I get that people don’t like Kim and some of the other women she’s been piggy-backing off of, but that doesn’t mean Bette is some right on truth-teller. She’s just trolling for attention.

    • Anon33 says:

Thank you. There was a time when Bette had her tits out every second too. Clearly she’s forgotten that…

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

I don’t recall Bette relying on her cleavage to get attention. Sure, she has an ample bust, but she also has loads of talent: singing, acting, comedy. All Kim has is her sex tape and cut and photoshopped body.

  24. Tig says:

What is being seen here is Kim’s panic at already at age 35 being left behind on the “sexy” train- her younger sisters are (sad to say) taking over that role. And pls -being naked isn’t “empowering”- it’s taking off your clothes. Her tweets are a lot of things, but funny(witty?) isn’t one of them.

  25. Citresse says:

Yeah Kim has proven not everyone can take a joke. The entire Kardashian family is a joke and most people can’t take them.

  26. BB says:

I think a lot of the jokes about her naked selfie were along the lines of “we have all seen you naked many times now, Kim, if you want attention you are going to have to do something else this time.” If a woman wants to post a naked pic, I don’t care, especially is it’s her MO. However, Kim’s timing was suspect and it came off as thirsty af. Kanye was getting lots of attention, Kylie is surpassing her in popularity, Rob and Blac Chyna are getting attention, and her dearly departed dad is getting talked about. She put out the Saint pic, but needed even more attention, so she put out an old, heavily altered naked pic. That’s the joke, that’s what’s desperate. I didn’t find Bette’s tweet nasty or shaming at all, but I wish people wouldn’t give her the attention she so desperately craves.

Oh and Miley can take several seats. That Jodie Sweetin pic was what was tacky af. Seriously why would you post that? The woman is obviously clean now getting some work with Fuller House and dancing with the stars. Not every child star is as lucky as Miley.

    • swak says:

RE: Miley and this part of her statement: “Why don’t we overly (myself included) fortunate women come together and try to create and bring jobs to other women in desperate need of them so they can support not only THEMSELVES but their families!” Instead of talking about it why aren’t you doing something about it. Sounds like she jumped in on this to get some attention also since her getting back with her ex is not bringing her enough attention.

  27. LadyElenor says:

good on ya Bette!! eff that narcissistic, no talent, attention whore. must be a slow day when you have to post a nude thats over a year old to get attn. gawd i cant stand the K family and all their ‘pat attn to me’ shit…..

  28. Anon says:

Can I just say that I find it hilarious (and not at all surprising) that Chloe Grace Moretz, at 19, is more mature and self aware than Kim Kardashian is at 35.

I am in the camp of “its her body, her cares, do what you want to do.” but I think Kim really missed an opportunity to respond to Chloe with a thoughtful counterpoint… which is yet another reason why we know she didn’t write that new “essay” herself. If she had she wouldn’t be clapping back with immature retorts on Twitter.

  29. Nik says:

I love that Kim is so concerned about what the comments say about her body. Proves 100% that she can’t see herself outside of what her fake followers say. She is desperate and thirsty for fan validation she can’t see how desperate she is. She’s a bigger joke than her crazy husband

  30. Bethie says:

The cover photo with her hair like that makes her look like a Capitol person from The Hunger Games.

  31. caty1313 says:

as a male friend of mine said quite succinctly…seeing Kim naked…again….is about as exciting and titillating as watching paint dry.

  32. The Original G says:

I’m with Bette. That’s sanity people.

  33. Madpoe says:

Bette the original Queen Bee! love that comment tho’ lol

  34. JenniferJustice says:

Kim is a hypocrate but so is Miley and Bette Midler. It’s seems the two least influential people in the area of feminism felt the need to put themselves front and center as if either is a paragon of feminism or success based on sheer talent. Everybody knows why Miley should take a seat, but I’d like to remind Better Midler that she rose to fame literally shaking her boobs for the sailors back in the 70’s. She was never a great voice or even a particularly good entertainer all ’round – she got attention and fandom by shimmying around on a stage for horny soldiers over seas who hadn’t seen a woman outside of the military for months or years. She was all cleavage and bounce. I guess she figures because she didnt’ actually take her clothes off, it was different for her, but I see no difference whatsoever especially taking into account the times. It was a different era, where what she was doing was just as controversial as Kim’s nude selfie is today. It was only after Johnny Carson rocketed her to legitimate heights of fame by having her as a regular guest on the Tonight Show, that she stopped the ridiculous boob shenanigans and became a self-proclaimed torch singer. But let’s not forget, how she actually started out. I see the pot calling the kettle black.

    • Susie 1of 3 says:

Miley was a kid made famous by the Disney machine. Bette Midler started out singing in gay bath houses with Barry Manilow as her piano player, if I remember correctly. She did USO shows overseas when many performers and regular Americans were not supporting the troops who were so far from home. She was funny and entertaining and “her girls” were part of the show. This was the ’70s not the ’50s. Modesty was not big. Mini skirts and short shorts were hanging on from the ’60s. Even if you don’t agreed she has talent, she was a hard working comedian/singer for all these years. To compare her to someone famous for being peed on in a porn movie and for extensive plastic surgery and selfies isn’t fair. I generally love your comments and the information you bring here, but I disagree on this one.

  35. Wentworth Miller says:

Subscription app essay? I don’t understand.

  36. LAK says:

I love Bette Midler. That is all.

  37. JoJo says:

Isn’t Bette just saying what everyone is thinking? Enough with the selfies already Kim.
I had this on my mind yesterday and decided to take a nude selfie to see how it felt. I got one I liked and it made me feel good… I might keep hold of it to look back on when I’m a Granny. But to go and show it to the world? NO WAY! That’s where the weirdness come in.

  38. Jack K says:

So either Kim Kardashian thinks everyone tries to fake-friend her or she confused Bette Midler with Katie Couric…

  39. raincoaster says:

I wonder if Miley’s adding “concern troll” to her Wikipedia page right this instant.

  40. Jag says:

    Kim reads Celebitchy confirmed!

    Kim, those tweets weren’t funny.

I can’t believe that I actually like something that Miley said. lol
