Naomi Watts: ‘Relationships are hard whether you’re famous or not’

naomiwatts1
It feels like Naomi Watts is doing the heavy lifting on the promotion for this upcoming Divergent movie, the third Allegiant, out March 16th. (Yet another Divergent movie is scheduled to come out next year, just FYI.) We’ve barely heard from the star, Shailene Woodley, but Watts has been doing talkshows and interviews and she seems perfectly happy to get out there. Watts plays the villain from what I’ve seen in the clips. (I saw Insurgent, the second Divergent movie, on HBOGo this weekend. Watt’s character seemed wooden to me but it was likely the writing.)

Watts is not particularly controversial and I think that’s by design. She’s on Instagram and she posts cute pics of her kids but you get the sense that she’s pretty careful about it. She recently opened up her home to Architectural Digest but she’s usually somewhat guarded about the things she says. That’s why it’s interesting to me that she’s admitting relationships are hard work. On the surface it’s a general, true quote but we’ve heard that she’s having problems with Liev. (It was a tabloid rumor but still.) Watts seemed to open up quite a bit in a recent interview with Los Angeles Confidential. It’s worth reading for the details and she sounds pretty wise:

Her father, a sound engineer for Pink Floyd, died of a heroin overdose when she was 7
“I wish I could say otherwise but I don’t have any clear memories of my father. Mum was young and did not have much of a plan. I think there’s a combination of grit and perseverance and tricking yourself into believing things are okay even if you’re not getting the results you want—that’s what I learned from her. Even if you’re being batted around, you keep going. It’s basic human determination.”

Watts met Nicole Kidman in acting classes in the early 90s
“Nic was incredibly generous in introducing me to people and showing me that an Aussie girl from around the corner can make it big.”

On struggling to get jobs before she was hired for Mulholland Drive
“I would play mental games with myself. Rather than dwell on why I didn’t have this role or that opportunity, I would say, ‘Well, I do have a SAG card and I do have an agent and I am perfectly fine until the right something comes along.'”

Her philosophy on work and life
“Even if you feel completely connected to the material it often doesn’t go the way you think it will. It’s no different than anything else in life. You can’t calculate how things will turn out. All you can do is try to have fun, push yourself to do well, be with people you love being with, and stay in the moment. The rest is basically out of your hands.”

She was “asked if coupling is harder when both people are well-known”
“Relationships are hard whether you’re famous or not. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have to work on it. Being an actor doesn’t change anything. I’m sure it’s the same if you’re a doctor or a couple of lawyers. You have high-pressure jobs, lots of hours, stresses that come at you unexpectedly—and you have to figure out how to be present in the midst of it all.”

[From LA Confidential]

I didn’t know about her father dying when she was seven, that’s very sad. She’s not saying anything that’s very revealing, but just by acknowledging that relationships are work you get the sense that she’s struggling with that. It must be hard being two busy actors, but I like how she brings up the fact that it’s hard for everyone. This was a great interview. The editorial is quite good too, they put her in some cute designer dresses and she looks both young and elegant. There’s only one dress that’s fug, a tiered white and black Proenza Schouler that makes her look like a cake topper.

Reading through these quotes made me realize that while she may be mentally resilient, she also seems like the type to be in denial when things are going sour. It makes me wonder what Liev’s side of the story is…

  2. GlimmerBunny says:

I love her and she’s so beautiful and seems so nice. Go Naomi!

  3. Kate says:

    I really like her.

  4. lowercaselois says:

She seems like a beautiful person, inside and out.

  5. SusanneToo says:

I like her more every time I see her. She sounds quite grounded and wise. I don’t get a sense of real trouble between her and Liev, so why promulgate gossip?

  6. Crumpet says:

I love Naomi and wish her all the best. But it always seems that those who are in troubled relationships say that relationships are ‘hard work’. Yes, they do take a little bit of self sacrifice, but hard work? It seems a portent of bad news to me. I hope I am wrong.

    • Chris says:

Agreed. That’s often the first sound bite when one is preparing to roll out a divorce. Also, celebrities don’t often invite shelter magazines to take pictures of their homes, unless they are contemplating selling that home. I also hope I am wrong.

    • Chris says:

Even though they are not technically married, if they are splitting, it will require the same type of public roll-out. There’s 10 years + 2 kids + real estate.

  7. Patricia says:

Love her, what a sweet person.

I don’t know if I’m in the monitory here, but I never relate too deeply to “relationships are hard work”. I used to, when I was with a man who basically sucked as a partner and all around person.
In my marriage it is not hard. It’s not work. We have the vast majority of days where there is no conflict and we support each other and work together like clockwork. When we have conflicts we talk it out, or wait and see what changes. I sometimes wonder about all these celebrities who say “it’s hard work”. If you are with the right person it shouldn’t be very hard. If anything, life if hard work but having the right partner by your side takes some of the burden away and life becomes easier.

    • SusanneToo says:

She didn’t bring the topic up. She was asked if relationships are harder for famous people and she just made a generic, rather polite response that they’re difficult for everyone. What I took away was that she was saying famous people aren’t special when it comes to relationships, not really referencing her own.

      • perplexed says:

That’s how I interpreted her quote too. I didn’t get the sense she was really revealing anything, but had the common sense to not put actors on a pedestal in terms of what they deal with.

    • sunshine gold says:

Your relationship sounds perfect, good for you. But I think she was just answering a question in the best way she knows how without giving too much away.

    • Ani May says:

I totally agree. Life is hard, relationships should ease our burdens, not add to them, or worse, be the heaviest burden of all.

    • Andrea says:

I’ve found relationships are hard work when you are with a person you probably shouldn’t be with.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Sometimes I think celebs say these things to make themselves more ‘relatable’ as in, ” I know my life looks perfect from the outside, but really my personal life is just as real and hard as yours.” Or maybe things seem like hard work when everything else is so sheltered.

  9. K says:

I appreciate she didn’t do the oh yes it’s so difficult in the public eye thing, and just said yeah it is difficult for everyone. Because it’s true it is. That was a nice acknowledgment of reality.

    • Esther says:

while realtionships arent easy for non famous people, being famous is harder. all the rumors, all the temptations. all the terrible comments about her partner etc. i agree though i dont like them complaning, fame is a choice.

      • mee says:

yeah i thought it was very smart of her not to complain about it being harder for famous people, but i bet it is actually harder for famous people for the reasons you listed.

  10. Chinoiserie says:

Love the first dress. I wish the Divergent films did not look so bad, I have not seen any of them but kind of would like to if they looked better. I am suffering from Hunger Games withdrawal and would like to watch something similar.

    • Ani May says:

Try The Maze Runner – I prefer it to both divergent and the hunger games, even if it is a sausage fest :p

  11. perplexed says:

She looks very pretty here. It’s weird how bad she looked in that Diana movie.

  12. kri says:

I like her. That Proenza dress is so ugly I mistook it for Chanel. Also..did anyone see her and Liev on the red carpet at the Oscars? He looked…..weird. Like he was fuming. Or really just didn’t want to be there. It was palpable.

  13. kay says:

I really like Naomi. And also Live and them together. They have a beautiful family but it must be pretty hard to make it work in Hollywood, more than in the civilian world, no matter how they spin it, showbiz is a weird place to long-lasting relationships. I have no doubt than more than once they were about to break up: first, years ago they were just about to get married, wedding and everything planned and they cancelled. Who knows what happened but I do remember the story. Then last year while she was at Cannes he was photographed partying in Hollywood, looking intoxicated and with a woman. I don’t think opening her house and lives the way she did in AD will help her project a family union but instead looks like she’s trying to hold it together as much as she can.

  14. RedWeatherTiger says:

I like her a lot. Her children are so adorable.

I recently began watching Ray Donovan, and while I could never see much to admire in Liev before, well, damn, this series has surely opened my eyes.

  15. Hannah says:

I love her pics with Liev and the kids. They are also very clearly loved up on red carpet interviews.

I think their relationship is just like anyone else’s. Some days breezy. Some days tough. Most days awesome.
