Damon on DiCaprio: his role in ‘Wolf of Wall St. [was] my favorite since Gilbert Grape’

These are photos of Matt Damon filming the new Bourne movie in London. I would put a spoiler alert on these but there’s nothing spoilery about Bourne sneaking around, looking bruised and wearing civilian clothes. That pretty much happens in every Bourne movie. I can’t wait for this one, it’s out at the end of July.

Damon won best actor at the Empire Awards in London this weekend, and he showed up to accept his award. He looks so good in a suit, the Bourne training is really evident, and his half-smile does it for me every time.

Damon was there with Bourne director Paul Greengrass. Damon said that it was a pleasant surprise to see him there as he just saw him at work. He also gave an interview to Empire about his character’s story arc in this new film. It’s similar to what he’s already told EW about Bourne’s journey to this current point. He was asked by The Daily Mail to give some “cheeky” quotes about Leonardo DiCaprio (as he’s done to date, kind of trolling DiCaprio for how much easier it was on the Martian set with Ridley Scott) but Damon didn’t take the bait. Here’s what he said:

He’s my boy, he’s great and he deserved it. What he’s done in his career is awesome. The Wolf of Wall Street, that performance was just… that was my favorite thing he’s done since Gilbert Grape. That was next level.

Do you think Damon was still subtly shading DiCaprio by praising his Wolf of Wall Street performance instead of his Revenant performance? I do think that Damon may have an understandable grudge against Alejandro Iñárritu, who won pretty much all of the awards after bragging about treating his actors like crap in order to get decent performances out of them. Ridley Scott didn’t get a DGA, that went to Inarritu like every other award, and Scott wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar. Damon admitted he was trying to campaign for Scott as best director so that’s got to sing.

Damon and Ben Affleck have been jokingly ribbing each other in the press about which of their superhero characters would win in a fight. Damon said a few months ago that Bourne would “kick the sh-t out of Batman” and Affleck recently responded that Damon can’t even tell him that in person. “Matt is going around saying this all over the place but not to my face. But Matt can’t even beat me up, never mind Batman. You know what I’m saying? He has a long way to go…They’re just finishing the Bourne movie now when we have our premiere over in London. I’ll see Matt and he can take me up on it.

I would pay good money to see that. Ben and Matt need to do another film together. Apart from Good Will Hunting I know they’ve done Dogma and Third Wheel and earlier movies like School Ties and Glory Daze but they have that production company, they could do another movie together. I suspect there would be some debate over who gets to star. Their company, Pearl St. Films, is next producing a reality competition series, kind of like a global hide and seek, called The Runner. Variety has the details.

Damon is ruined for me since the whole whitesplaining thing. I used to love him sooooo much. 😩

    • Div says:

He’s definitely f*cked up but most celebrities have….I still like him for the most part.

    • Rhiley says:

Yeah, I kind of feel the same. He seems a little too gracious and funny in interviews, almost to a Tom Cruise degree, but it also seems like a cover for his crazy level of privilege and entitlement.

    • Snappyfish says:

I thought Damon was brilliant in The Talented Mr. Ripley. With that said I don’t care for him. I think announcing he broke up with Minnie Driver on Oprah w/o informing her first was top shelf douchbaggery. One doesn’t recover from that.

      • Jane says:

Damon said nothing bad about Garner. The tabloids made up some unattributed quotes but Matt would never publicly criticize his friend’s wife.

    • nikko says:

I feel the same way. I used to like/love him too.

@Snappyfish, who wrote: “With that said I don’t care for him. I think announcing he broke up with Minnie Driver on Oprah w/o informing her first was top shelf douchbaggery. One doesn’t recover from that.”

Matt Damon and Minnie Driver broke up 3-weeks prior to him announcing it on Oprah. Even Minnie’s own sister has called her out for lying about being ‘blindsided with dump on TV’ and milking it for years.

      • Snappyfish says:

@emma thanks for clearing that up. However I still find him distasteful. He recently mentioned his dislike for Jennifer Garner which was inappropriate. He just rubs me the wrong way. I know I’m in the minority.

@lilac flowers (great name by the way) I’m surprised that he & Ben would have considered doing a movie on Whitey since Damon was in The Departed (a brilliant film) which was based on Whitey

  2. lilacflowers says:

Matt and Ben were planning on doing a film about Whitey Bulger, with Ben directing and Matt playing Whitey but Depp’s Black Mass got funding and their project folded.

  3. Nancy says:

Okay slow clap for Matt. I never post anything good bout him, but today I changed my mind. You have your Jack Blacks and others saying somebody else did/is better than Leo. Matt came out and didn’t bs around, he straight out praised his work. Class act.

    • Jegede says:

      Yep.

Funny thing is Leo never engages. Be it responding to George Clooney, Jack Black, Matt Damon e.t.c There is no interview where Leo slams his peers.

      Not that he needs to.
In real world, Dicaprio’s proved his clout again with The Revenant closing in on $500 million at the Box Office. So Leo’s given Innaritu his highest gross the way he did for Lurhman and Scorcesce.

      • Nancy says:

It’s funny. He made a comment years ago about someone who shall remain nameless and it turned me off to him. I saw the Martian and he was great in it, but I put him down to my husband as being a creep. This one little comment made me realize he is human and likes and dislikes others like everyone else, but is respectful of others and nowadays, that is rare. I’m not going to start a fan club or anything….lol….but give him respect.

      • Pepper says:

Leo’s interviews are highly controlled. He did less formal interviews early on in his career, and boy did he and his Pussy Posse not come off well. So now he rarely does them, and when he does the interviewer and publication are very carefully selected, all questions are screened and he gives vague non-answers to even the safest queries.

He’s rather like Tom Cruise in that regard, although even Cruise does a bit of late night and random foreign TV interviews now and then.

      • Jayna says:

@I agree, Pepper. Leo is the biggest bore of an interview time after time.

      • V4Real says:

“Funny thing is Leo never engages. Be it responding to George Clooney, Jack Black, Matt Damon e.t.c There is no interview where Leo slams his peers.”

That’s why I don’t get the Leo hate on here. I understand some are put off by his dating habits of young 20 something’s and not settling down. Maybe he’s a forever bachelor or he just haven’t met the one yet. But you never hear about this man spewing bad venom about anyone else in the business. You never hear about him using drugs or stumbling around drunk. He had stardom at such a young age and I think he handled it well.

And so what about his so call P posse. That was a name given to them by journalist Nancy Jo Sales. According to Kevin Connolly and Leo they never called themselves that but people in the Hollywood circle gave that name wings after reading Sales piece in the NY Times. Because they were a bunch of young single guys in the business who became friends who always had girls hanging around Sales gave them that name in her article. In the 80’s you had The Brat Pack; a name also given to them by a writer for The NY Times and Frank Sinatra had the Rat Pack.

      • KB says:

I think DiCaprio is the last true movie star. Everything he touches turns to gold.

      • perplexed says:

        “Leo’s interviews are highly controlled”

Maybe other celebrities should do this too. Sounds practical. So many celebrities wind up talking too much, and then you just wish they’d go away.

I can’t fault him for having common sense.

    • Jegede says:

      @V4Real

      Pretty much.

And all after over 30 years in the business.
After dealing with a crush craze that could rival Beatlemania.
And after over how many interviews and call outs over the years – Leo doesn’t sh!t talks people, despite ample opportunity.

Not the A list nor the so called D list

His place in HW is secure so he can come for anyone he wants and his work won’t suffer, but he doesn’t.
Boring, controlled, e.t.c so be it I think it speaks well of him to refrain while Damon, et al stay obsessed over him.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@Jegede, who wrote: “Boring, controlled, e.t.c so be it I think it speaks well of him to refrain while Damon, et al stay obsessed over him.”

I don’t know about everybody else, but it was clear above that Matt Damon was specifically asked about Leo and instead of taking the bait to be catty he praised Leo instead.

      • perplexed says:

I thought Matt Damon was praising Leo too. I’m confused by the assumption in the original article above that he would have been dissing him if he started off by saying “He’s my boy…” That’s a strong element of affection to display if you’re going to follow up with shade.

  4. Emma - The JP Lover says:

    @Celebitchy …

How many times must I say this? … stay away from my man! 🙂

I am SO looking forward to “Jason Bourne.” The trailers look great! I’m hoping for some resolution to all the ‘Nicky / Bourne’ prior (connection? relationship? friendship?) … stuff they teased us with during that cafe scene in “Bourne Ultimatum.”

  5. Bam says:

Remember when Matt Damon silenced a Black woman last year?

    • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@Bam, who wrote: “Remember when Matt Damon silenced a Black woman last year?”

      Nope.

  6. melior says:

Well after Ross, now we have Inarritu seeing mistreating the actors as a recipe for success. I get why Damon would be disappointed that Ridley Scott didn’t get much love this year

    • Emma - The JP Lover says:

Ridley Scott never gets much love and he has directed some incredible films. I just don’t get it. 🙁

  7. Miss M says:

Not ” The Departed”, Matt?! 🙂

  8. Crumpet says:

Ben and Matt DO need to do another movie together. Not that I particularly like either man on a personal level, but they can make a good movie together, that is without question. But they will have to do it without poor Robin Williams. 🙁

  9. Catelina says:

Still sounds slightly shady to me, honestly.

  10. Emma - The JP Lover says:

LOL! Where is the lass who posted just days ago that nothing sticks to Matt Damon because he’s SO well loved??? 🙂

  11. Carrot says:

I agree this comment is a bit shady. Matt seems like a nice guy and far better adjusted than Affleck but that doesn’t mean he’s above the petty rivalries you get in any industry.

  12. Dangles says:

Best since Gilbert Grape? More like sour grapes.
