Duchess Kate in a two-piece Temperley in Delhi: one of the best looks of the tour?

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had back-to-back events throughout the day Monday, but everything felt a little bit off after Kate had yet another “Marilyn Moment” at the war memorial. She was able to buck up a bit for the evening though. William and Kate attended a reception at the British High Commissioner’s official residence in Delhi. The guest list was a who’s who of Indian government officials and VIPs, and the whole point of the reception was to formally celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, because I guess the Queen isn’t coming back to India to celebrate. Hilariously, People Mag made note of all of the booze on hand, and it sounds like a wild party: they had “Hendrick’s gin, Johnny Walker black label whisky, and Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay or Shiraz Cabernet.” It’s good to hear that the British ambassador wasn’t stingy with the liquor. Apparently, the gin & tonics were crazy-strong. Good party!

Kate ended up wearing an ensemble which is actually my favorite thus far of the royal tour. It’s a two-piece gown by Temperley London, with a beaded crop top and a long, beaded, straight skirt. The beaded motif is very Indian and the cut on Kate is pretty good. She doesn’t look dowdy, the two pieces are tailored well and the actual design is lovely. The top costs £830 and the skirt costs £1,705. My only complaint is that Kate still doesn’t understand what to do with her hair for formal occasions. Or anything else. Unfortunately, this also happened at the event:

Kate was also asked – by Professor Bulbul Dhar-James – how she stays so thin. According to Prof. Dhar-James, “We said, ‘How do you lose all the weight after having two kids?’ And she said, ‘I am running after my kids!'” Um… sure.

Also, the Daily Mail went WAY overboard about Kate’s feet yesterday – go here to see. To me, it looks like she just wears high heels too often, and she’s a walker/runner. Not everyone is meant to be a foot model, you know.

She looks lovely but she has got to stop hunching her shoulders over!

    • Mrs. Welen-Melon says:

Hands at sides, Kate. In front, it looks like you’re desperate for a couple of Immodium.

      • Karen says:

She had a very long thin torso and muscular arms. In the first pic you can see when her arms are at her side she looks more masculine.

She probably keeps them in front because A) William does, and B) because as Tyra says leaving space gives a better shape.

      • HH says:

Also, her arms may be (slightly) abnormally long or something. I know that sounds weird, but there were photos of her yesterday where she had her arms by her side, it looked ODD. I’m not sure if it’s because she just let’s them dangle there which gives the lanky look. I just remember being caught off guard by it, because I saw it and immediately thought “Oh! That’s why crosses her arms in front of her.”

      • Olenna says:

HH, she has a long torso, arms and neck. Her legs are short, what some would call disproportionate. I’ve seen pics of her sitting next to PW and they look very close in height. But, when she stands up, you can clearly see she is several inches shorter even with the 3-4 inch heels she seems to prefer.

    • SKF says:

I wish she’d allow herself to be her old size. She just looks so frail and thin. I liked slim, toned, sporty Kate so much better. I think there’s a timidity and frailness about her that just undermines her appearance.

    • Minnieder says:

My almost 13 year old daughter told me sometimes she feels awkward and doesn’t know what to do with her hands (while say walking down a hall at school). I told her stand straight, keep her head up, and keep your arms at your sides; that portrays confidence. I’d say the same to Kate. She could still carry a clutch in her left hand and readily have her right hand available for waving and handshakes. It’s not rocket science!!!

  2. Alix says:

Ugh, not the old “running after my kids” thing!

Was re-reading some of the daft things Will and Kate said on their excursions yesterday and it is simply *mind-boggling* to me how they don’t know how to do their jobs. Without a lick of royal training, even I could’ve responded more appropriately to my hosts. W&K are those people who, when you ask them “How are you” actually tell you. The idea of social niceties is apparently unknown to them. Sheesh.

    Pretty dress, though.

    • BendyWindy says:

To be fair, running after my kids is meant to be a joke. It’s a way to brush off a rather rude question.

      • Alix says:

Point taken. A rude question indeed!

      • Kk says:

Agree. Very rude question. Would have been hilarious if she just replied “bulimia.”

This dress is better than the rest so far. I think it would be really cute if skirt was shorter, like knee length.

      • paleokifaru says:

Yes the question/comment about her thinness and the comment about in person vs photographs were just plain rude. She handled it well.

    • LadyJane says:

Right. I have 4 kids. I should be practically invisible.

      • Size Does Matter says:

Me, too! Guess my kids must be lazy or something.

      • Zimmerman says:

Even though I don’t believe Kate for an instant on this, to be fair her kids have entire estates/parks to run in, while most of us probably have half an acre at best and a tiny balcony at worst.

    • Bridget says:

It’s my least favorite answer as well… but I actually think it was an incredibly rude question coming from a stranger at a reception like that. What we’re they going to talk about, diets?

      • Beth says:

I don’t think she should talk about diets, but mentioning an active lifestyle wouldn’t be a bad idea. She is supposedly supporting charities that focus on healthy lifestyles: PeacePlayers International, SportsAid. You would think she would appreciate an opportunity to bring that up in day to day discussion rather than blowing off the questioner.

  3. BendyWindy says:

Great dress, awful hair. And ouch on the foot commentary and close ups from the Daily Mail.

    • Hudson Girl says:

The Daily Mail has turned into one of my favorite stops for online comedy either through their articles or usually the comment section.
I just found an article of theirs from the other day that Chelsy Davy pulled a hair out of her mouth, and that was the title!! Ha ha ha!! I was CRYING laughing because they’re insane. I can’t help it, I love them.
      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3526109/Prince-Harry-s-ex-girlfriend-Chelsy-Davy-pulls-HAIR-mouth-dining-out.html

I HATE that Black and white dress and it’s stressing me that everyone else seems to love it. I usually “get” something style-wise even if I wouldn’t wear it. But, this dress just looks like a garden trellis with NFL football shoulder pads. I need someone to explain why it’s so great.

      • Feeshalori says:

I agree with you, Hudson Girl, I’m not feeling this dress either. I really do like her casual dresses better.

And the DM article on her feet is really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

      • AtlLady says:

I love the dress, just not on Catherine. It doesn’t look like it fits across the shoulders. Also, obviously she has weaned Charlotte because her boobs have completely disappeared. I think the dress with the breast pockets from the other day was an effort to make it look like she had some boobs but it was also a bad fit.

      • Poisonous Lookalike says:

Hudson Girl, I don’t like the dress either. I really like your description, though! I needed that laugh.

  4. Alix says:

Just saw that piece on the Duchess’ feet. Are they kidding??? It really pisses me off — in 2016, the role of a female royal seems to be solely to exhibit physical and sartorial perfection. This is progress?

    • Paula says:

I’m all for criticizing her when needed, but this article was just ridiculous.

    • Maum says:

To be fair she’s selling herself as a decorative ornament. Figures that comments about her are exclusively based on her looks and outfits as she’s never engaged herself in anything worth discussing.
Of course it’s not progress but she could have such power if she wanted. She could be a force for feminism, education… Anything really. She just doesn’t care.

      • Erinn says:

And to be fair – whoever spent the time writing an article on her feet should take a long hard look at where their career has lead them.

      • HH says:

There is no being fair. Of all the harsh (and valid) criticisms that could have been lobbed at Kate during this 5 year, extended vacation from full time royal duties, her feet is NOT one of them…AT ALL. We can’t call this fair in any sense.

    • LadyMTL says:

Yeah, that article was just pathetic. They’re FEET. Who doesn’t have some kind of foot issue they’d like to fix? I have fallen arches and super long toes, does that mean anyone should point and laugh at me? To write an entire article saying that she’s “ruined” her feet and “omg look how baaad” is horrible.

Sigh. I’m not a Kate apologist but give it a rest, DM.

      • Jib says:

Yes, her lack of work ethic is fair game, as is her inability to stop flashing. But her feet? That is just absurd.

And in my view, in 2016, the idea of a royal female even existing seems to show an appalling lack of progress in and of itself.

      • hmmm says:

Her feet look as if they had been bound growing up. That’s all I’ve got. I’m sure to her they’re a symbol of beauty and status.

    • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

      @Alix – I’m pissed too. Utterly ridiculous.

      @Erinn – agree!

    • Lauren Vail says:

I felt so bad for her when I saw her feet! They look painful. Like she quite obviously has bunions from high feels and they look quite swollen. Of all the things to criticize her for, feet are not one of them.

      • aurelia says:

I’m quite suprised clairol didn’t bind her feet from birth in anticipation of marrying well.

  5. LookyLoo says:

She looks so hard in the face to me. But he’s not a looker, either, so I guess they match.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Nice dress, but she looks better in colors, I think.

    • Maum says:

Absolutely. The black on nude is so harsh. Shame as the cut of the top/skirt combo is lovely

    • HH says:

Yeah, it’s a nice look. But I don’t love it. I wonder if it looks better in video than photos?

    • INeedANap says:

This is why I am over the sheer dress trend. When it gets lined it looks off. Maybe if the beading had been a deep plum on a sky blue background?

  7. Betti says:

I like this dress on her and the hair style suits the overall look. Beige is not the best colour on her but its fine.

She needs to work on her shoe game – those blocky looking black sandals don’t do the dress justice.

  8. Paula says:

I absolutely loved this two-piece, fits her really well. Her hair looks nice too. Not a big fan of the earrings though.
As for the tweet, the person probably meant that she is even more beautiful in person than in photos? English is not my first language and I can totally see myself making this kind of mistake when trying to speak.

  9. TeamAwesome says:

I love this look, but I am quite struck by the contrast of her frock and his rumpled blue suit. I do like the hair with the outfit, it looks fresher than an up do.

So is #poorJason on this trip?

    • Livvers says:

I was struck by Will’s suit too. I know the man loves a blue suit, but with the red tie, it just looks way too informal. I noticed at the wreath-laying the other day his dress shoes were very dull… does the man not have a valet? His father has more (old-fashioned) flare and his suit is always appropriate to the occasion.

  10. Karen says:

There’s videos showing how thin thin she is when she turns to the side, but I wonder why the press only photographs from the front. It’s like they’re hiding it like they did with diana.

  11. vauvert says:

I had to laugh at the comment about the “wild party”… we serve more types of booze at the year end hockey party (to the adults only, obviously… the only way to keep up with 15 tweens running through the house, you know).

What would be interesting to hear is quotes from the meetings – you know, anything of substance. There’s no point in looking at the pics anymore, she might as well have her hands permanently glued in front of her crotch with an aide just replacing the clutch every day.

    • MonicaQ says:

Well us hockey players (adult co-ed rec league) and hockey parents are a little more interesting than these two 😉

  12. The Original Mia says:

I like this ensemble. I didn’t like her hair. The braiding looked juvenile, but B for effort.

  13. Anon says:

I don’t think this hair is formal enough for the dress and the occasion, it looks half hazard and like they were running behind.

That said, I think her hair is her security blanket, and this is a nice compromise for “GET IT OUR OF YOUR FACE SO YOURE NOT FIDDLING”

  14. Seraphina says:

The passive aggressive nature of the Daily Mail was way too much yesterday with her feet. Good grief. Tear apart her work ethic or her wardrobe malfunctions there is a lot of meat there but when they go for the feet, I’m wondering WTH.

I loved this dress. She looked great. I can’t believe I just wrote that.

  15. MonicaQ says:

What does she have in her clutch? I looked at pictures of the Queen and she has a purse (and apparently puts it certain ways to signal to her security discretely) but I mean…it’s just something to have in her hands, right? It isn’t like she needs ID and credit cards. But maybe makeup?

  16. notasugarhere says:

I think this isn’t flattering at all. Delicate cool color is an unflattering contrast with her orange permatan, boxy style emphasizes the lack of waist. It wears her, not the other way around.

As for the beading pattern. Didn’t someone yesterday write they expect to see a giant flower over her crotch at some point during all the flashing? Well, here it is.

    • SilkyMalice says:

Lack of waist? Boxy style? Are we looking at the same photos?

      • notasugarhere says:

I see an outfit with a boxy style that emphasizes her upside down triangle shape. Her lack of defined waist and long torso are what she usually tries to disguise, and this outfit doesn’t disguise that well.

    • hmmm says:

That pattern is making me dizzy. It’s too, too much. But so typical of her. Does she think India is represented by the loud and garish? And the theme dressing is ridiculous and condescending at this point.

      • notasugarhere says:

She would have been much better sticking with solid colors and not English-does-Indian. She always goes “theme” when visiting tropical places which is condescending.

  17. Impleasantdammit says:

I agree that DM went overboard on the critique of her feet – the shape of her feet look fine to me, and a full article about it is ridiculous. BUT I do have to say that I wonder why she wouldn’t get a pedicure before the tour when she knew she would be barefoot and wearing open toed shoes frequently. She makes plenty of time for hair/shopping – why not a quick mani-pedi? It honestly was the first thing I thought of when I saw the pictures. A simple light coat of polish would go a long way.

  18. realitycheck says:

How come she still hasn’t worn a saree?

    • hmmm says:

She should. It’s a great opportunity for a Marilyn moment.

      • teacakes says:

They are floor-length and literally cannot be worn without a petticoat (the waistband is the thing you use to form/drape the ‘skirt’ portion of the sari), so I don’t think so!

  19. Esmom says:

They look like wax figures in the top shot. I love this ensemble, although I’m not a fan of cropped tops. I like that her toes are peeking out, too, instead of nude pumps. Still not a fan of her hair, even partially pulled back it looks too sausage-y.

  20. PHAKSI says:

Very pretty, but my favourite so far is the cricket playing dress, minus the wedges of doom. I also really liked the pink shoes she wore with the boob flaps ass flashing white dress

  21. r-r says:

It is a wonderful outfit but to pay over 4 000 € for a garden party attire is ridiculous, I think the pricing here is inaccurate the „Delphia“ skirt costs 2 840,- € and the crop top 1 350,- €
    http://www.temperleylondon.com/shop/long-delphia-skirt.html
    http://www.temperleylondon.com/shop/delphia-crop-top.html?___SID=U
It would not be a problem if this outfit was more versatile, but unless they are already planning another trip to India in the near future I don’t see her “recycling” this expensive outfit any time soon.

  22. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I adore this dress. Kate looks beautiful.

The DM is nutty with their article on her feet. It’s so sexist how she is picked apart. Let’s scrutinize her feet! Unbelievable…

  23. Cerys says:

I liked this dress. However it seems to emphasise how painfully thin she has become. Quite concerning

  24. ClaireB says:

I like this outfit, even after I found out it was a two piece, so I couldn’t figure out why she looked so terrible in it. But it’s her posture, as usual.

As for styling, a pop of color on earrings and clutch would have been wonderful and either more interesting or more colorful shoes. And of course an updo.

But really, I think half her tailoring problems would be solved, like many commenters have said, if she stood up straight at her engagements like she probably does at her fittings.

Edit: The foot article was inexcusable. She’s not required to paint her damn toenails. And unless the DM wants to initiate a discussion on the damage done to women’s feet and bodies by high heels, then they can shut up about her feet. (She could wear lower heels and stop towering over everyone she meets, though.)

  25. teacakes says:

    The foot article is ridiculous.

Yes, she’s lazy and should be criticised for that, but people picking her apart for the littlest and most ridiculous things feels like way overkill.

  26. Magnoliarose says:

She looks nice here. Much better to me.
As a runner I can understand her foot problems and it is silly. I’m sure she does her best. Rag on her for other things but this is a nonissue.

  27. Erica_V says:

Next birthday I am officially cutting my cake with a saber. That is awesome.

  28. Elle says:

My brother met them when he was in the armed forces and they visited Canada after getting married. He said all the guys thought she was good looking and that she is much more stunning in person. Not everybody photographs well, myself included.
Also, I feel uncomfortable when acquaintances make comments or ask questions about my weight after twins. It feels kind of tactless and prying to me.. Of course It’s one thing if it’s a friend but otherwise it just feels kind of invasive..

    • hmmm says:

She’s a seasoned flirt and they are men. I’m sure she made them feel special. Guys can be such saps.

    • Magnoliarose says:

I agree. It’s a prying question but I don’t think people mean it that way sometimes. Her answer was ridiculous and should already have a better answer but it is invasive. However, she makes a thing of her appearance so the person probably felt it was fair game.

  29. Ravine says:

This gown is really cool — like some kind of refined ceremonial armour.

  30. racer says:

I want a picture of her eating cake!

  31. what's inside says:

    Nope, nope, nope.
