Princess Sofia & Carl Philip welcome their first child, a ‘prosperous’ baby boy

Sweden’s Princess Sofia and Prince Carl-Philip got down to baby-making immediately. They were married last June, and by August, I was already saying that she looked knocked up… and she was. Sofia and Carl Philip announced the pregnancy in October, but the announcement didn’t come within a “this is why Sofia is going to need to take a three-month holiday” excuse. Sofia maintained a royal-work schedule throughout her pregnancy, although she did seem to slow down in the last month, which is completely normal. Anyway, Sofia and Carl Philip have welcomed their first child… a healthy little boy!

Princess Sofia, her husband Prince Carl Philip and Sweden’s royal family are celebrating the birth of the newest royal baby! The royal couple are the proud parents of a baby boy!

“Princess Sofia gave birth to a healthy and prosperous child on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:25 p.m. Both mother and child are doing well,” Sweden’s Royal Palace revealed in a statement, adding that the baby weighed in at 7 lbs., 9 oz. and 19.3 inches long.

The palace also shared that Carl Philip was in the hospital room during the birth. The couple traveled on Tuesday evening from their new home at Drottningholm Palace to Danderyd Hospital, which is north of Stockholm. During a press conference outside of the hospital, Carl Philip thanked everyone for the well wishes.

“For me and my wife , this is obviously a great day with a lot of emotion,” he said. “Words cannot describe.”

When asked who the baby looks like, the prince said it’s too soon to tell, but he did reveal that he’s dark-haired! The prince also revealed that he cut the umbilical cord himself. “We are so excited,” he shared.

There had been widespread speculation about whether the newborn would be a boy or a girl – although the parents-to-be insisted that they welcomed the element of surprise. The new baby is fifth in line to the Swedish throne, official diplomatic sources confirm to PEOPLE.

Sofia, who kept up her official engagements throughout her pregnancy, joins her sister-in-law Princess Victoria in welcoming a new little one – Prince Oscar was born on March 2. And we know at least one adorable 4-year-old princess who is over-the-moon excited about the two new arrivals!

Congrats to Sofia and Carl Philip! I’m a little bit surprised that it’s a boy, I was getting a girl vibe from them. But I guess it’s baby-boy season for the Swedish royals – this baby will have a male cousin, Prince Oscar, who is just five weeks older. I hope they grow up together and have a great family bond. As for big cousin Princess Estelle, the second in line to the throne… that poor child doesn’t care about babies. She just wants a hamster.

    He’s dreamy.

  5. Neners says:

I bet he’s a beautiful baby with parents like that! Wonderful news!

  6. lower-case deb says:

i can just imagine: another baby, yet no hamster. and no tiara yet 🙂

It really seems to be boy season. I know 3 just delivered and 2 on the way that are boys. My ultrasound said girl, and for 5 weeks I believed that. Then I had a re-scan (I’m high risk due to previous difficult pregnancies) and ITS A BOY. Big shock!!!! My two little girls are so confused, poor things! 🙂

    • Betsy says:

I’m waiting with my third to find out in the delivery room. My older son is going to be so sad if it’s a third boy.

Congrats to these two! Hard workers, super attractive (which is irrelevant, I know, but they’re ridiculously good looking).

    • Meghan says:

I am having a boy, too! 3 of my friends who are roughly as far along as I am are also having boys. Though this little boy has been causing me a lot of chaos and now I am on 2 weeks of rest while stuffing my face with as many calories as possible.

      And it is boring!

    • PinaColada says:

I’m having such a hard time coming up with boy names. It seems like there are sooooo many girl names but fewer boys. We have close family with nearly every classical name, and personally know so many other kids with the “new” names. And then there’s the co-opting of boy names for girls. This is tough!!

Estelle is obviously very happy about her younger brother, so I dare say she cares about more than hamsters now 😛

Also I find it amusing that y’all here find Sofia hard working. I guess in comparison with Kate she is but otherwise.. nope. She has already been on several holidays and “private visits” and most of her work has been going to dinners supporting the charity she worked for. Not exactly a tough job.

    • Betsy says:

Yet it’s her first year of Royal life and she has been pregnant for most of it, so – she’s doing well getting started.

    • puffinlunde says:

Sofia is very good at slipping away unnoticed for her private time – she is not under the same sort of surveillance as he Brits. The Swedish press have commented that she took multiple holidays in her first few months as a princess. However she is good at tacking on an extra week onto a dinner or visit.

    • bluhare says:

Interesting. So not quite as industrious as I thought. I could make an excuse that she’s just learning, is not in the same position at all, and has plenty of time, but . . . nah.

  9. Nicole says:

    Yay!!! More Swedish Royals!!!

  10. Melissa says:

The former “glamour model” is so much better at real glamour than a certain Duchess. Princess Sofia is exquisite.

  11. Anna says:

Both Vics and Sofia are REALLY impressive in their work ethic. Victoria is already back to work and I am sure that we will see Sophia out and about again in no time. And they did multiple events per week until they were basically popping! Quite a lot of them seem to be substantive meetings too – if anything their appearance schedule is more akin to that of a mid-level public official, with some tiara events thrown in. And Sophia also assumed her INDIVIDUAL (solo) work schedule like, two weeks after becoming a princess? Amazing!

  12. Sayrah says:

Congrats to them! He is very handsome. That’s a honeymoon baby for sure and I find it so cute he offered up the info that he cut the cord.

  13. Sarah01 says:

    Congrats!
I really wanted for them to have a girl I don’t know why but I’m happy mother and baby are doing well. Would love to see pics, I’m sure he’s going to be one beautiful baby. Whenever they are ready.

  14. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Thanks for the post! I was just wondering about them the other day. Congrats🎉🎉🎉

  15. Gabrielle says:

Wow! Carl Phillip is so hot! Just sayin.

  16. Meraud says:

I adore this couple – they just seem to sparkle with love for each other. And Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and their little ones seem so joyful too. Less Will & Kate and more of the Swedish Royal Family, please!

  17. Harryg says:

    They look so good together!

  18. kri says:

Congrats on a healthy baby. I like these two alot. They seem to be genuinely in love. So sweet.

  19. kori says:

The baby’s name will be announced tomorrow.

  20. Cerys says:

Congrats to them. Sofia seems to have adjusted to her royal duties without any great difficulty and conducts herself appropriately. No inane grins or Marilyn moments. Perhaps certain young windsors should take a look at how the Swedish royals balance public duties and family.

  21. KBeth says:

They are such a cute couple!

  22. Lucky Charm says:

Three grandsons in under a year, that will definitely be some fun in a couple of years when they all get together! The two Princesses each had a girl first and then a boy, and the only son has a boy first, so I guess they’ll have a daughter next. ☺ Congratulations to the new parents.

  23. Kate says:

They are so perfect. Congratulations to them!

  24. Bella says:

I just had a baby boy a month ago too! Congrats to the couple!
