Key & Peele’s ‘Keanu’ movie used seven identical kittens for Keanu-kitten

Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele are promoting their film Keanu, which comes out next Friday. If you’ve seen the ads, you know that the film stars an adorable little kitten named Keanu. Only THR reports that Keanu was actually played by SEVEN identical little kittens!! THR did a big write-up about how Key & Peele and the crew worked to make the kitten-stunts look real because they didn’t want to CGI a kitten throughout the whole film. Some highlights:

Kitten Auditions: The kitten’s name is Nacho. And it’s Jefe. And also Squibword (an ode to the squib work he did). As it turns out, seven different but very similar-looking kittens were used to shoot Keanu. “Cuteness was definitely the biggest priority,” says director Peter Atencio, who held a kitten audition in New Orleans, deciding between two types: brown tabbies and black-and-white tuxedo kittens. Tabbies, which also were the most common at shelters, ultimately were chosen because they were the easiest breed to match. “They’re extremely photogenic and easy to work with,” says Atencio.

Kittens were trained using treats: “Food is the ultimate motivator. The kittens were taught to walk, run and sit on marks by using buzzers and food rewards. For instance, Payne taught the kittens that if they walked over to a buzzer, they’d get a treat. For one scene, Payne put a dollop of baby food on Peele’s face so the kitten would give him a kiss… After weeks of conditioning — using treats as rewards and “a lot of repetition,” says Payne — the trainers were able to coax the kittens into performing many of the stunts without any CGI help at all, including a scene in which Keanu sprints through a gunfight (the cats were taught to dodge exploding squibs). “The studio said, ‘You’re going to do all CGI for this right?'” said Atencio of the shootout scene. “And I said, ‘No, we have to use real cats. You have to see the cuteness!'”

Cats don’t like to wear hats: One of the toughest tricks was getting the cats to wear hats; the trainers taught them to tolerate the headgear by feeding them treats whenever they slipped them on (the bling was lightweight plastic and less annoying to wear).

The kittens were treated like stars: On set, says Payne, the kittens “were treated like little stars.” Potential cast and crew were all asked if they had any cat allergies (it turns out Key is allergic to cats, but was able to use medicine on set), and the kittens served as the on-set therapists. “If anybody was having a bad day, they’d send them over to the kittens,” says Payne. “Everybody loved the cats.” An American Humane Association rep was on the set at all times, and there were no injuries to cat or human (aside from some playful kitten scratches).

[From THR]

After the film wrapped, all of the kittens – which were brought in from shelters – were adopted and taken to forever homes. One of the actresses, Tiffany Haddish, took one (she named her kitten Catatonic), and the cat-trainer took home three of the kitties. I’d also like to say that I hope to one day be involved with KITTEN AUDITIONS. OMG. Also, I can’t believe they trained kittens to do all of that stunt work.

Key & Peele also did an absolutely hilarious Reddit AMA – go here to read. They got tons of questions and references to their Key & Peele sketches, but they didn’t get annoyed by it at all – they happily played along with the exchange about “p—sy on the chainwax” and that bit is still… perfect. PERFECT. I giggled to myself throughout the AMA!!! Really carve out some time and enjoy it.

That is so cute I might pop.

    • Shambles says:

It has caused me to google pictures of tabby cats, and I found a picture of a tabby kitten and a bunny. Happy fri-yay to me!

    • doofus says:

ha! when I first glanced at this post I thought it said “I might poop”… lol

but I agree with your sentiment. KITTEHS!

and Key & Peele was one of the all time funniest sketch shows. I was sad when I heard it was ending but this movie makes up for it.

  2. Jess says:

Awe!!! Anything with cats and I’m sold.

  3. BendyWindy says:

I’m actually really excited to see this. It looks hilarious and I love tabby cats.

    • Santia says:

Really? This looks sooooo dumb to me. I love Key and Peele and was hoping for something great so I could support them. But, alas, I can’t support this buffoonery (shout out to Tommy Lee Jones).

    • Chicken says:

My boyfriend and I are total cat ladies and we will be seeing this when it opens. Someone is going to have to physically restrain me from going to a cat rescue org after the movie, I fear, because my desire for another cat will be so strong (we already have three).

    • Detritus says:

Key and Peele plus Kittens and action? So sold. The trailer looks hilarious and the tabbies look like my barn rescue cat.
And as a plus, an animal rights organization was on site to make sure everything was on the up and up.

      • Carol says:

I’m sold too for all the things you mentioned. Key & Peele always crack me up and add a kitten on top of that – its Christmas!

  4. CFY says:

One of the seven kittens came from the rescue where I got my second cat, so our local news has been covered with news about my city’s connection to this movie. Super excited to see it – as a Key and Peele fan and also as a cat lady, haha.

  5. susanne says:

Give a shout out to your local shelter! They might get a donation or two.
I love these guys. I never want to see movies in the theater- much more of a homebody that way, but I have to see this. Maybe the drive-in!

  6. TyrantDestroyed says:

I will seriously have to consider now to change my career and work at anything that involves doing kitten auditions 😍

  7. minx says:

    Tabbies really are photogenic.
Can’t wait to see this movie.

  8. Magnoliarose says:

I can never tire of cat cuteness. Their show always has me laughing and my friends and I trade sketches of theirs on You Tube.
    But again, CATS!
Mine always hated birthday hat pictures and the photos are hilarious. I only have one now but maybe the dog will tolerate another. We will see.

    • ArtHistorian says:

I don’t know these guys – but KITTENS!!!!!!

My sister’s got a “teenage” kitten. We call her either Mimi the Destroyer or Hurricane Mimi. She’s silver-grey so we’re considering getting her a shark costume but cats in shark costumes are hilariously cute.

      • Magnoliarose says:

You must do this. Lol I love kittens. Those tiny meows get me every time. Hurricane Mimi! Lol My cat will be a year old in June. She was very high energy but has mellowed some. 🙂

      • Tara says:

My soulmate kitty was a Russian blue. She was a beautiful tyrant. A friend called her “the friendly shark” because she would skulk around looking for pets… But was just as likely to attack you when you pet her. I generally referred to her as “The Grey Menace.” I miss that crazy fur person every day.

  9. Lindy79 says:

Ive never seen Key and Peele but I smiled the whole way through that

    • doofus says:

oh, you should watch some of their shows, if you can. I’d bet they’re available on the Comedy Central home page. REALLY, really funny.

    • ClaireB says:

      They are so funny!

I think “I Said B**ch” was one of the first sketches and it’s on Youtube. If you find it funny, you’ll laugh at the rest of their stuff. “Office Homophobe” and “Substitute Teacher” are my absolute favorites.

      • doofus says:

I like Obama’s Anger Translator best, I think, but there were so many good bits.

      • Birdix says:

Insubordinate and churlish! I started saying that to my dog when he doesn’t come when I call him at the beach (doesn’t work!). Substitute teacher makes me giggle every time 😅. I’m so not the target audience for this movie but am looking forward to it.

      • ol cranky says:

I still crack up hysterically at substitute teacher

      • Sadezilla says:

YASSS to substitute teacher. I can’t call anyone “Aaron” or “Jacqueline” anymore. It’s “A-Aron” and “Jay-quellen” or nothing!

  10. grabbyhands says:

In other set news, they added an extra two weeks to filming due to overwhelming need on behalf of all set workers to to kiss and cuddle the kittens on a frequent basis.

Kudos to them for using shelter babies and making sure they ended up adopted at the end of shooting the movie.

    • ArtHistorian says:

      Kitten Therapy works!

      • Cheryl says:

The one REALLY funny bit from Scrubs was “Box of Kittens”.

The therapy was dumping a box of kittens on a depressed person.

“Side effects of box of kittens may include sneezing and itty bitty scratches.”

    • Feeshalori says:

I’ve never heard of these actors either but as a cat lady of three myself, my heart is going squee over these adorable kittens and that they went the extra mile to train shelter babies and they all got adopted at the end. I love that no injuries were sustained other than kitty scratches. And I laughed throughout the trailer, so l may have to see the movie just for the multiple Keanus.

  11. Christin says:

Someone showed me the trailer yesterday, because of the cute cat(s). I’m even more interested, knowing they saved several rescue kittens. So many many end up in shelters, especially during this time of year.

  12. TT says:

I WANT TO SEE THIS MOVIE SO BAD!

  13. Olenna says:

I know it’s cliche, but the Keanus are just too cute!

  14. Sullivan says:

    This! I will see this!

  15. Green Is Good says:

    They had me at meow.

  16. Kristen says:

    This looks delightful.

  17. I Choose Me says:

This is just the kind of sweet, heart-warming story I needed today. I can’t wait to see the movie and I’m so happy they were able to find all those kitties homes.

  18. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Holy crap, that’s some dedication and now I need to see this film because KITTTIES!!!!

I also saw an interview with the actual Keanu (puppy-face actor) where they asked him about it and he was so cute saying how he was surprised snd talked to them and they’re doing a special screening for him.

So all in all this movie has EVERYTHING.

  19. Nina says:

That image of Keanu in a du rag gets me every single time! I had to have my nearly 14-year-old tabby put down at the end of last year, so I’ll be seeing this in his memory. 🙂

    • Sadezilla says:

Internet hugs to you, Nina! I hope you have wonderful memories of him. Losing a pet is really heartbreaking.

      • Nina says:

Thanks, luv! We had had our previous cats for a very short time (1st one for about 2 years – he was hit by a car, 2nd cat came to us as a stray we had for about 3 years – she died of feline leukaemia ), so as the years went by with Niko, the more I knew that saying goodbye to him was going to be hard.

      • Feeshalori says:

Cats are family and it’s always heartbreaking at their loss.

    • lucy2 says:

Aw, I’m sorry. It’s so hard! Our family just lost the sweetest cat ever very unexpectedly, it just breaks your heart.

    • Magnoliarose says:

Sorry for your loss. 🙁 it’s difficult when they go.

      • ArtHistorian says:

Yes it is. We recently had to put down our 15 year-old family cat. She was the most polite little kitty. She’d just look at you with her big yellow eyes patiently until you did whatever she wanted you to do. She would also patrol the house at night to check if everything was right. One night a family member had fallen out of her bed and little kitty woke us up to help.

  20. Sadezilla says:

Love K&P, love the plug for shelter adoptions, and most of all, love the kittens!!!!!

I’m reminded of the K&P sketch where the two women are squeezing over puppies so cute they could just eat them, and at the end it cuts to them burying the puppy they bought in a graveyard full of puppies. I miss K&P already, but I’m sure they’ll keep making us laugh through other venues.

  21. SloaneY says:

This looks funny and cute! So cute!

  22. Lucy says:

Adorable!!! But I think it’s a pretty common practice in movies featuring animals, to use more than one exemplar to play the same “character”. Same with babies, they’ll usually cast twins or triplets in those cases.

  23. hmmm says:

This post made my day. Thanks!

  24. ClaireB says:

This movie looks so dumb, but I love Key and Peele, so I trust that they can make this kind of movie funny!

  25. kri says:

Kitten stunt cats?! Kitten AUDITIONS?! Omg, purple tears all over today, but this makes me smile. And yasss to the adoption of the kitties!

  26. Amelie says:

As a cat lover, I have to see this movie…I am hoping the training (of the cats) outlined helps dispel the myth about ‘herding cats,’ (see herding cats video on YouTube). They definitely can be trained. Now, someone needs to do a movie about how cats train their owners!

    • ArtHistorian says:

They are so good at training us that we often don’t even notice! 😉

    • Jwoolman says:

Cats will do things for something they want, but they’re not likely to do it just to please the pet human… Kittens are pretty much always hungry, so that must have helped! Get ’em young before they fully realize they’re cats.

Cats are pretty unpredictable for kitty acts, sometimes they just aren’t interested in performing. Which smart trainers make part of the act.

Dogs operate quite differently, since they’re a lot like humans and are more likely to aim to please a leader.

I’ve definitely been trained by cats. A couple would drag a string over to me (one would meow in a muffled way while doing it) to tell me to dangle it in front of them. Another cat decided to scratch on the refrigerator door when I wasn’t quick enough to feed her. Her sister watched the training sessions for a while and started doing the same thing. Once I was on the phone for a long time and kept telling the sister “just a minute”. Then I heard her scratching on the freezer door nearby… Guess she figured I was just having trouble hearing the more distant refrigerator.

Then there was the cat in grad school who got tired of waiting for me to come home at odd times in the wee hours from the lab. First she insisted that I stay with her while she ate in the kitchen, and would run after me meowing if I tried to go get ready for bed instead. Then she started to put me on a strict schedule which she kept up for the rest of her life: every morning at 5am, she woke me up to feed her. Never mind that I just went to bed at 4am and had already fed her. At 5am, I had to do it again. I finally just put a canister of kitty krunchies and a bowl by my bed so I could dump some into the bowl without getting out of bed. Had to be freshly dumped kitty krunchies, just keeping a full bowl by my bed was not enough.

      • SamiHami says:

Sammy loves emery boards. He probably has a hundred of them stashed around the house/under furniture. He will get one out, carry it to you and drop it on your feet. He then waits expectantly for you to throw it for him (you have to get the throw just right to get good spin on it). He will fetch it and drop it right in your hand.

When my husband and I are both present Sammy will alternate who he brings it to. I guess he wants to be fair!

  27. Pandy says:

I’ve been waiting forever for this to finally hit the screen! So excited. Gangster pet lolll.

  28. S says:

The posters in the subway have convinced my 3 year old that he needs to see this movie. That’s basically my only beef with them – it looks funny.

  29. Madpoe says:

I’m looking forward to seeing this! 🙂

  30. Deedee says:

We need more cat movies! 🐱

  31. Jwoolman says:

Well, of course they had to have seven lookalike kittens to play the role. There are strict laws concerning the amount of time a minor can be working on set….

My prediction is that it will become a cult classic, with viewers trying to match the kitten actors to whomever is in each scene (like we do when twins play a role). There will be books published.

  32. Jwoolman says:

Just noticed that ads for other sites I’m seeing on this page are all about various dog breeds, except for one glaring exception : a story about Snoop Dogg…. Oops.

  33. Tara says:

Ugh! Fine. So not only am I going to see this movie with the little guy, i developed a full-blown Key & Peele addiction in the space of a morning. I hope you’re all satisfied. Thanks Internet :p
