The LA premiere of ‘Keanu’ involved photogenic kittens in do-rags: yay?!

wenn23796781

Here are some photos from last night’s LA premiere of Keanu, the first film that Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele put together for themselves following their wildly popular Comedy Central show. Keegan has been flying solo all year, and he didn’t seem to have a date to the premiere. He split with his wife of 17 years back in January, so I don’t really know what’s going on with his personal life. But Jordan Peele arrived with his WIFE Chelsea Peretti. They’ve been together for a while and they got engaged last fall. Everyone thought they were planning their wedding, but as they announced this week, they quietly eloped a while back and didn’t tell anyone before now.

As we discussed last week, the film didn’t CGI the fluffy kittens. They held kitten auditions and brought in seven identical grey tabby kittens to play “Keanu.” Kitten wranglers taught the kittens how to do stunts! And some of the kittens were invited to the premiere! The kitten in the do-rag kills me every time. And damn, these cats are photogenic. They are STARS!

PS… You guys need to talk me out of going to the shelter and looking at kittens. The last thing I need is a kitten.

Go to the shelter! It’s a great idea!

I’m a sucker for all animals, but cats…I just love them to pieces. The ones in this post are mighty photogenic.

    • Lindy79 says:

Cats get such a bad rap and it annoys me so much and I grew up in a house which always had dogs. I’m obviously biased about my two but honestly they have such personalities and are beyond cuddly but they can throw serious shade if necessary and I love them for it. The way they can be getting up to shit and then when caught just strut past me like “what?? ” and then demanding I cuddle them 2 minutes later, those furry little aholes.

      • SloaneY says:

That’s why I love cats. The attitude.

      • doofus says:

        excellent summation of cattitude.

      • Asiyah says:

Yes! The cattitude! I wish I was as confident as my cat. He has such swag and style I’m like yo, I want to BE you! lol

      • KB says:

I grew up with dogs as well, but I gave them up a few years ago after I lost my red Golden Retriever. I knew no other dog could come close to him, so I adopted a bitchy cat from a shelter.

My intention was just to give her a home because she hissed at anyone that tried to touch her and I knew she had no shot at being adopted. Long story short, she became my world.

I lost her to cancer after just a year and a half but the conversion was complete. I’m a total cat lady now. I still love dogs, but cats are just something else!

      • doofus says:

KB, good on you for taking a chance on a potentially unadoptable kitty.

the bf and I are thinking of getting one and we both agree that we’d prob get a “senior” cat as they’re the ones that languish in shelters.

    • AngelaH says:

I agree…Get to the shelter! Cats are awesome. If you can’t handle a kitten, maybe get yourself an adult cat! They need homes too and their personalities are already formed so you kind of know what you are getting with them. The first cat I adopted was 7. I had planned on a kitten, but adopted a crany senior. I miss him so much.

      • Melly says:

It’s so important that people adopt adult kitties, they are the most likely to be euthanized because everyone wants kittens. Adult kitties need love too!!

    • Rachel says:

It’s kitten season. Shelters are overrun with kittens, which sadly leads to more animals being put down. Kaiser, definitely needs a kitten – or three.

    • TyrantDestroyed says:

I grew up in a house surrounded by cats (that arrived home or we rescued them) and big dogs either German shepherds or Huskies, and its their independent personality of both cats and those kind of dog’s breeds that makes me so attracted to them.
The cats at the premiere are everything and beyond cute, I will enjoy seeing this movie.

  2. V4Real says:

Oh my gosh, those kittens. A post full of cuteness to start the morning off right.

The kitten in the do-rag is gangsta.

  3. Eden75 says:

Kaiser, I would love to talk you out of it but I am currently working on the other half to let me get a kitten. We lost ours a few years ago and he took it pretty hard. So, I’m the one in the corner going….

“Dooooo itttttt. You know you want to.”

    • swak says:

Let’s all go together! I have two cats, one of which looks like these kittens. I love my fur babies and would have more, but I know my limits (and my two probably wouldn’t tolerate an intruder!).

      • Jwoolman says:

More likely your originals would fight over who got to nurture the kitten… Having an adult cat around when a kitten arrives is great. Gives the adult something much more interesting than me and the kitten gets a mom (male or female). The adult cat raises the kitten so less work for me. Fun to watch the adult put a hammerlock on the kitten trying to get it to hold still long enough for a proper bath… (My kittens have never been the cuddly type: five years later, the former kitten is still uncooperative when her foster dad tries to clean her ears.)

      • swak says:

My cats are very cuddly. The older one is a male but when the female came into the house, she took over. Mine are 6 yrs and 3 yrs. The older one belonged to my daughter and when her and her family moved from my house to their new one, I wouldn’t let him go as he was so used to this house the it’s a quiet neighborhood and he knows it well. The baby was given to me when I had to put my dog down (was a family dog but became mine when they all moved out and I divorced). I’m not a dog person, thus the gift of the cat. I can’t go to places with cats up for adoption because I want to take them all with me!

    • Kitten says:

Yay cat people are my people 🙂
Sorry you went through that, Eden. I hope you can wear your man down. Kittens make life so much better.

      • Eden75 says:

        Thanks.

It’ll happen, I have no doubt. Our kitty was very chatty and I think he misses having someone to talk to in the mornings as the son and I are not morning people, haha!

      • V4Real says:

I grew up around cats and dogs and love them both.
I currently have a cat and a dog and they adore each other. I get such a kick out of watching them play together. My dog will be on the floor minding his business and out of nowhere my cat will run by and jump on him or swat him and take off. The look on my pups face is WTF. Sometimes my dog tries to chase him but that little rascal is fast and always makes it to his cat tree.

      • Magnoliarose says:

I love my cat so much I carry her big ole self around like she’s my human child. Love cats in general.

    • Zip says:

If it’s an indoor cat get two! Most cats are very social. We have four adult rescues. They are the cutest. 🙂

      • Eden75 says:

Our cats have all been indoors but just one at a time. I would love numerous but between the dog, the kids and work, multiple may not be an option for now. All the cats we have had are very social with us and like to chat and cuddle. Even my mom (who says she doesn’t like them but I don’t believe her) is a cat convert after she came to take care of our last one. Yes, she came and babysat the cat while we were traveling because he shouldn’t be alone, her words. I came home to a cat that flopped on his back with his feet up for a massage as she had spent the entire time massaging his feet, I kid you not.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

I want a cat so much, but my husband is a little (a lot) afraid of them. *tears*

      • Kitten says:

Oh no! My BF was not a cat fan when we first met but he is a convert. He loves my two now, especially my darling girl.

I’ve heard many stories about non-cat people transforming into cat lovers when they meet the right cat. In fact, many people I know who claim to be scared of/dislike cats have never even owned one or had any real experiences with them.

Maybe you could talk him into fostering a little furball on a temp basis and he would fall in love and let you keep him? 😀

        Caaats! Cat talk yay.

      • AngelaH says:

Would he be willing to go to a shelter to start to get to know cats? Like exposure therapy?

      • Livvers says:

Kitten, I agree! People think cats are aloof or unpredictable because they don’t understand their psychology very well, and perhaps contrast them unfavourably to dog psychology, which I think is more intuitive to us because they are capable of more human-like expressions. For instance, I have to remind my mother that when my cat sits with her back to her, it’s actually an expression of trust, not an insult. Or if a cat refuses to look someone in the eye, that’s actually being respectful and friendly, not evasive. I try to get people to think of domestic cats as more like a pride of lions than a solitary tiger. They crave companionship and routine and to feel secure in their home territory.

Goats, if you think his fear can’t get any worse, maybe you could bring your husband along a bit by having him watch some My Cat From Hell? I know it shows cats “misbehaving” at their worst, but the main takeaway from the show is that cats are not spiteful or mean or arbitrary. If they act out, it’s because something is wrong, and that wrong thing is –treatable–. I know I’m a sook, but I almost always have tears at the end of an episode because I just think it’s so wonderful seeing people realize how fulfilling an emotional bond they can have with their cats!

      • sauvage says:

There are only two kinds of people in the world: those who love cats, and those who don’t know cats.

      • Kelly says:

My father is a recent (within the last decade) convert to cats and now lives with 3 cats and a dog that thinks it’s a cat. My mother is a lifelong cat person. She had wanted a cat for a long time but my dad was the hold up. He’s from a dog family and one that on the whole prefers little yappy ones to big dogs.

She finally got her cat after I left for college and he started a new job where he traveled 3 weeks out of every month when a little orange tabby slipped into the garage. Cat the first, a female orange tabby, is very much my mother’s cat and at best, tolerates other people. Cat the second found us while we were walking the dog, then a puppy and followed us home home. He was starving and was infected with worms, but had the classic kitten eyes. It would have taken a truly cynical person not to feel sorry for him. He’s now made up for his rough start and is on a diet after weighing at over 20 lbs at the vet last year. He has a more dog like personality than the female and is one of the reasons my dad is now a crazy cat man. My dad’s responsible for the third one which he found in the parking lot at work. He’s my dad’s buddy when he works from home with the cat sitting on his desk by the computer monitor or on his lap when working from the kitchen table.

    • SloaneY says:

I loved my kitties growing up. But my husband and son are extremely allergic.

      😥

    • lucy2 says:

The best way to get over a broken heart is to rescue another – remind him of that!

  4. Kitten says:

The boyfriend and I are SO effin pumped for this movie. Ever since I sent him the trailer he’s all “do you think Keanu is a Bengal kitty?” or if one of my cats is acting up, “Keanu would never do that.”

    Them kittens though! ♥

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That is adorable. Keanu would never do that. ❤️❤️❤️

    • Asiyah says:

I’m pumped too! LOL I love that other people feel the same way! My best friend and I are going to watch it in honor of our cat because we love him and he’s also a tabby!

    • Magnoliarose says:

That is adorable. Having had a Bengal I don’t think they are because of their markings and having that many behave. I miss my energetic girl every single day.

  5. SusanneToo says:

Go get that kitten, Kaiser. Or get a couple. You won’t regret it.

  6. Christin says:

Kitten wranglers sounds like an interesting job. I’d love to see behind the scenes footage of the process.

In the meantime, I am imagining one of my tabby buddies in a do-rag. One modeled a Trump fur ‘hair’ piece (which is now my screensaver image), so maybe he’d do a do-rag, too.

  7. lisa2 says:

I’m going to see this.. only thing that looks good this weekend.. That kitten in the do-rag and gold chain..

KEEEEEAAAAANNNNUUUUU… so adorbs.. and I don’t like cats.. so that says it all.

*** and congrats to Jordan Peele and WIFE Chelsea Peretti. Their honeymoon planning commercials were cute.

    • tealily says:

I love these two as a couple! I had no idea they were even together until they announced their engagement. They seem like a great match.

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think (Kaaaiiissseeerrrr) this looks like a fun (you neeeed a kitten…) movie and I can’t wait (noooowwww) to see it.

That was a subliminal message. Very subtle, eh?

    • Kitten says:

Imagine how cute Kaiser’s big huge dog and a teeny little kitten would be together!! ♥ ♥

      • sauvage says:

We have a corgi and a cat. Boyfriend brought the dog, then 2 1/2 years old, into the relationship, I brought along the cat, then eight years old. It took them a while, but they are friends now. Our dog is an attention wh*re, our cat is the most polite being I ever encountered. In almost three years, she only whacked him ONCE with her claws out. Usually, she just waves her paw threateningly, or she jumps out of his reach, if he bothers her. But then you get pictures like this: she’s on the table, he’s underneath. She’s on the couch, he’s lying right next to her on the floor. She’s in the open cupboard, he’s guarding her in front of it. Or, I’ll sit on the floor caressing one of them (which means that the other one is bound to jealously show up within one hot minute to join us), and they’ll end up cuddling back to belly, or back to back, with her purring up a storm and him smiling broadly.

We’re pretty sure that they play cards as soon as we leave the house.

EDIT: Oh, and my boyfriend is allergic to cats, but not to her (exotic shorthair). Thought that ought to be mentioned, too!

  9. Jaded says:

Kittehs!!! I just lost my dear old Calico and am mourning her loss horribly. Can’t get another cuz am moving to B.C. to be with my BF but he’s allergic to cats. *SIGH* *SNIFF*

    • doofus says:

aw, I had a Cali several years ago…loved her so much. they’re such pretty kitties. Mine had green eyes and was VERY talkative. and, like a dog, would run to greet me when I came home. I could hear her coming as she was mewing the entire way.

      so sorry for your loss…

      • Jwoolman says:

My one classic (big patches) calico thought she was a dog, too. She followed me down the alley to a friend’s house when I went to help take care of his cats. Then she would wait for me on the porch and follow me home. Another calico arrived later who had the brown tabby markings on her back and face, and she fell in love with the first one while in heat (true love, lasted past surgery). One night I was walking down the alley, flashlight in hand, and looked back to see if calico #1 was following. Saw not one pair of feline “headlights” when shining the flashlight, but two pairs! #1 was following me, and #2 was following her.

    • Kitten says:

Calicos are gorgeous. My favorite kitty (well, before I got my own) was a long-haired calico. She was such a sweetie.

I’m so sorry for your loss. My parents just put their last cat (they’re 70 and feel it would be irresponsible to get another kitty at their age) down a few weeks ago. It’s so heart-breaking.

    • Asiyah says:

I’m sorry for your loss 🙁

  10. HK9 says:

I’m soooo going to see this~I love cats!! 🙂

  11. Mgsota says:

They just opened a Cat Cafe in my area and my girls and I are dying to go!! We have one sweet beautiful boy (a Russian Blue) and I’m so tempted to get another. I hope playing with cats at the Cat Cafe will tide me over for now…of course all the cats are adoptable, soooo…yeah…

  12. Lilacflowers says:

I need to bring my cat to see this movie

  13. InvaderTak says:

The kitty in the second to last pic looks like a diva. Is Choupette available? I ship them.

  14. AlmondJoy says:

Kittens make me very nervous 😩 I can’t deny how awesome this one looks though with the tiny durag!

  15. BearcatLawyer says:

I am a dog person and not a Hollywood insider, but even I can figure out the kittens at the premiere were not the ones used in the movie. Those kittens are full grown cats by now.

That being said, I am going to see this. Key and Peele are hilarious!

  16. bokchoi says:

fyi – this is being marketed in Canada as “Keanu – Gangsta Kitty” Which is sort of repetitive. ALL kitties are gangsta.

  17. kri says:

Kaiser, you must go rescue a shelter kitty! Then we can have a CB naming contest!! Please, PLEASE can we have a Celebkitty, please??

  18. Asiyah says:

I wasn’t much of a cat person until my family had to get one over a decade ago because of a mice problem. I fell in love! Now I have a cat of my own and I’m so attached to him. It was love at first sight! I walked into the back of a bodega and see a whole bunch of kittens and he immediately comes to me and meows and I said “he’s mine!” Only time a male ever chose me haha. He means so much to me. I suffer from depression and he makes me so happy and I thank God every day that I walked inside that grocery store.

  19. Dragonlady sakura says:

My cat is a stray my neighbor feed as a kitten. When my neighbor died, I started feeding her and finally managed to get her in the house. Damn cat is now spoiled rotten and she barely tolerates me, her mom, but absolutely adores my mother. Lovable brat. 😑

  20. Magnoliarose says:

I love cats and all animals but I can’t imagine my life without a cat around. My little girl is almost a year old and is already bigger than my dog. She is so talkative and affectionate. I have never had a cat that wasn’t affectionate but I’ve had lap cats or cats that just liked being close. My ragdoll mix is not a lap cat but loves when I cradle her and kiss her head over and over.
I had an old Himalayan that I used to bathe every week and we would have very important conversations during the process. My Bengal would sit on the edge of the tub and watch even batting the water with her paw. Miss my old guy and girls. I miss all three who died last year. Having only one is a strange feeling for me.

Kaiser get a cat. So many need homes and if you give them love and caring they will return the favor in spades. Go now and claim your bundle of love.

  21. Gaby says:

Yay, cat people! Love all your stories, keep ’em coming. I love all animals, but cats are the greatest. Not biased at all by my fur baby. Kaiser, get a kitten, you won’t regret it.

  22. Jess says:

Can’t wait to see this movie. And I had no idea about Jordan and Chelsea. I think she’s hysterical – both her stand up and her role on Brooklyn 99 – and I love it when two funny people get together. I want to hang out with them!

  23. Green Is Good says:

Keanuvis going to make HUGE bank. They’ve already got my money.

  24. Christin says:

It’s been a long time since a movie trailer has truly interested me. This one has done that. I sincerely hope it brings attention to cats of all ages in need of loving homes.

I only discovered cat ownership (meaning being owned by a cat) about seven years ago. A tiny kitten came to try and get food and water from my elderly dog’s fenced yard. She is now the queen of the strays yet to follow that now share my home. Each time a new one was added, there were periods of adjustment, but all has worked out well.

I’d rather be around my pets than most people, even on their worst behaved days.

  25. Feeshalori says:

Get thee to a cattery! Well, to an adoption center. All my cats have been adopted from rescue groups and they have all been so lovable in their feline way. With one exception when I adopted a kitten because I couldn’t resist her white fur and blue eyes, I’ve always gotten the mature cats since you know their personalities at that stage and they’re usually the last to get adopted. My Snowshoe loves running water and tries to drink from the watering can. My Himalayan follows me around like a dog and hops on the bathroom vanity, yowling and waiting to be combed while I’m at the sink. My big Russian blue mix cuddles up with me at night and whimpers weakly for his food every morning and he’s a big guy. And there’s something about rescue cats that know they got a second chance, and you’ll never regret adopting one or two or three…..

  26. susanne says:

I haven’t had a cat since my guy passed tragically about 7 years ago. He was a tonkinese, my only purebred. I have such mixed feelings about going non-rescue, and don’t think I will do it again, but he was my love. Mouth on him like you wouldn’t believe, and loved to be wrapped around my neck. He taught himself to pee in the potty, but wasn’t neat about it so I had to train him out of it.
I’ve wanted to wait until I can work more from home before adopting again, but it’s tough!
Once I am in that position, I may start with fostering. They get such a great start when they are socialized young.
When life gets a little tough, I find kitten therapy on the yootoobes to be the perfect remedy.

  27. Feeshalori says:

It’s so hard when a beloved pet dies and of course you can never replace it, but there are so many fur babies out there who need a loving home. I thought l could never adopt again after l had to put my first darling Snowshoe to sleep, but l just couldn’t do without a pet in my life. Susanne, if your heart is set on another Tonkinese, look at Petfinder or other rescue agencies online that are local and nationwide. So many times you can find a particular breed to adopt rather than paying a breeder. It’s astounding to see purebreds that are given up for adoption. And I stumbled on my Himmie and both Snowshoes at my local rescue. I really wish you luck.

And l just love the kitten foster videos; online therapy from the comfort of your home or office!

  28. AnkitaH says:

Oh my lawd, those babies are gorgeous!! 🙂 🙂

i lost my baby recently, he was a persian ginger, and wasnt even a year old 🙁

We have now been adopted by two street cats of our alley 🙂 They are boisterous, loud, cranky, whiny, come and go as they please, but they are the brightest spots of my day 🙂
